Full textWe have highlighted in this thesis the causes of the lebanese emigration in general, the geographic origin of the lebanese emigrants their arrival and their activities which define a certain form of integration. Our study is based on inquiries and observations of the lebanese community in abidjan, issia and gagnoa in the ivory caost. The lebanese emigration is due to economic and political reasons and strikes its roots in the poor regions of lebanon. A favorable policy adopted by the ivory coast made the settlement of the lebanese community easier. The lebanese in the ivory coast form a heterogene community with a middle class of 60 to 70 percent of the total community. A certain solidarity among the community was established which was manifested in the difficult cases not withstanding the different social background and religion. The lebanese were economicaly well integrated but their social assimilation did not follow this integration as the hope to return still persist. This why they have created an environnement whereby

Full textOn the next day of the second world war, the electoral system introduced by france in its colonies of black Africa, leads to the apparition of several political parties in Côte-d’Ivoire. One of them, the P. D. C. I. - R. D. A. , post up an exceptional dynamism. Very quickly, its electoral successes make of him, first a dominant party, afterwards a unique party (the other political formations having been early assimilated) that pre-independence one-party system will attain its period of crystallization in 1960 with the adoption and the practice of a "defensive" electoral system : the ballot of complete national list. If that method of political recruitment has contributed, during two decades, to reinforce the ivoirian regime's political stability, in return, the partisan identification is of it found affacted. So, to stimulate the dozing militantism, the ballot of unique national list is abandoned in 1980 in profit of a new method of selection : the electoral semi-competitive system (competition in the inside of the one-party). In 1980, the experience has been conclusive, but no without difficulties
Kouakou, David Koffi. "Le dialogue social en Côte d'Ivoire." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020BORD0174.
Full textEncouraged and promoted by the ILO, social dialogue in the Côte d’Ivoire benefits from an important institutional network and many players. It is an instrument of governance in the sense that it simultaneously mobilizes the State, workers and the employers. Its function is to promote the social peace that is so indispensable to the economic development. In the Côte d’Ivoire, social dialogue has developed very progressively in the public sector and is consolidating in the private sector. Its recourse during times of crisis has allowed taking into account the interests of the workers while ensuring that the companies’ competitiveness remains preserved. Even though its benefits are well known and regularly put forward by the players, social dialogue remains insufficiently exploited and oftentimes instrumentalised. Public authorities use it to seduce and reassure institutional partners that provide economic development in the Côte d’Ivoire. Beyond the insufficient juridical frame (lack of formal affirmation of the right to collective bargaining), the workers’ organizations, which are major social dialogue players, remain weak and dependent on politics. All these weaknesses prevent social dialogue in the Côte d’Ivoire from really making progress

Full textPeople who try understand how the government of Ivory Coast proceeds have a tendency to ignore all that makes up ethnics' humanity: in their feelings, emotions and passions. Today the government can pull out disarrays from ethnics' by returning to them what they have lost. Such was the meaning of the political evolution of Ivory Coast since its independence. Myths and powers set out the simple principles of this policy. It is not a matter of representing the world of objects but ethnics' inner life and to show their emotions through baoules’. The comprehension of these ambiguities must be thoroughly analysed as many as ethnics' are concerned. Difficult job when to arrest them require a strange work of concept, in order to forge the symbolic which translate the result. For the modernism direct us to the symbolic operation making the affection between ethnics' and the colonist with the power tonality. If the ivories are kind and strength, myths and powers expose the meaning of Houphouet-Boigny's power in the depths of their existence. Ambiguous demonstration without the intermediary of language, concept and rough data, makes it possible to understand the symbolic policy of Ivory Coast. It will enable F. Houphouet-Boigny to mark his country history, indeed the image fabricated for him he has substitute a myth that will last larger than reign. It has been instinct of eternity

Full textNew urban economics (nue) has developed urban spatial equilibrium models, where households cloose localization and housing quantity by trading off housing price and avcvessibility cost to urban center. Nue typical model lies on oversimplified assumptions : space isotropy, housing malleability, identical households. Modification of these assumptions amounts to describing housing by its characteristics vector : demand model fo a differenciated product, as developed by s. Rosen, in then introduced in the generai framework of urban spatial equilibrium models. Difficulties raised by the simultaneous variations of price and quantity of characteristics, due to the non linearity of hedonic price function, are analysed. Interpretation of estimated demand functions, and estimation conditions for their parameters, are pointd out. Aids characteristics demand functions are estimatesd for abidjan (ivory coast). Findings are consistent with hypotheses : localization choices do not result only from price-distance tradeoff, but are also determined by localized supply of urban services

Full textIn Abidjan, deficiencies of space occurred the multiplication of under-equipped district in where, live poor populations. In this environment of precariousness, the conditions of mobility of the populations are more difficult because in particular of a bad system of public transport. In these districts, the walking is the principal mode used and the majority of displacements are restricted in space and less diversified. According to whether proximity, internal or not displacement, it is initially the walking, then the communal taxi woro-woro and the minibus gbaka or transport by bus; but the latter is of more difficult access because its network does not serve these districts. To solve the problem of mobility of these poor populations, the report initially proposes to master the planning of the city of Abidjan, to develop the sector of the services of taxis and minibus by the reorganization of the market of public transport, in a logic of complementarily (intermodality) of the various modes or existing services of transport

Full textIt was in 1974 that works on a huge sewage system for abidjan (ivory coast) have started, of which preleminary studies of this project have started in 1968. The new system depends largely on the restauration and development of the existing one. Bearling in mind the future growth of the city, tow main objectifs were intended : -the evacuation of waste and rain water for all quarters in satisfying sanitairial, ecological and economical conditions; -to develope the lagoon in order to permit the development of pisiculture and maintain a healthy ecological environement for the city. Altough it was found impossible, soon after, to attain these objectifs, the effeciency of the sewage network was not doubted. Therefore, we found it interesting to search and find, beyond the official point of view justifying this acte, the stakes that researchs have demonstrated in other countries and or sectors. We have identified two points : a) the way the effluents were evacuated by the netwrk correspond to the bourgeoisical representation of the city; cleanliness and magnificance are the principal criterias of this representation; b) the sewage network, through its cost and the densification of the habitat, valorise the land. The failure of the sanititation policy by sewage networks (failure in function of its function to evacuate or sanititate) inspire, since years, some alternative policies. We have ended this work by some reflexions and propositions on these policies

Full textThe aim of this thesis is firstly to analyze the contribution of women et work in the ivory coast and secondly, to evaluate the consequences of their working status on their married life. Two major periods brought on significant charges in the employment of women in the ivory coast. These vears beetween 1946 and 1964, and 1964 and 1983, leading to more political charges than a radical restructurating of society. Namely, the abolition of froced labour (5 april 1946), the enforcement of the civil code in 1964 and the making of new laws concerning the population and more specifically women in 1983. In the first part of our work, we evaluate the degree of integration of women in the urban economy of the ivory coast. Traditional view regarding the place of women in society and the poor schooling received by girls do of course hinder this process. In the second part, we examine the legislator's standpoint as reflected by the labour laws which stipulate that "women are entitled to work professionally without their husband's consent", and the reality

Full textSince the fifties, Ivory Coast is distinguished by high rhythms of industrialization and urbanization. How does this concomitance enter the national space? In what way do the actors and mechanisms of urbanization report about factories localization in the cities or at their close proximity and how to explain the lacks of balance of the industrial core distribution? In what way does industrialization participate to the to-day’s urban growth? To answer these questions three axes of research around which the book is articulated have been privileged. In the first one the accent is put to urban and industrial spatial solidarities and also to the foundations and stakes of the several scales industrial localizations inside the Abidjan city and inside the inland cities. The second one approaches the links between industrial employment, consecutive population growth and workers coming to cities. In the third on are examined the articulations between manufacturing activities and other urban activities

Full textThe advent of political pluralism in 1990 saw the rise of a private written press that established itself quite early as a central component of the democratic process. Given the conditions of its birth, this new press became an instrument in the hands of political parties in order to spread their ideologies. Hence, thanks to the private written press a new public sphere – in Habermas’ words – was brought to life. The development of the public sphere in Côte d’Ivoire will be subject to this particular context of emergence. The process of democratization underway in this country through the newspapers is implicitly marked by strong competitive identity stakes based on ethnic group, region and religion. Manipulated by the political parties either to takeover power or remain in force, these three ingredients have been fuelling stormy debates in the newspapers. As such, the written press can be considered as a cause of social dislocation. Moreover, the political culture that prevails in Côte d’Ivoire was forged in the mould of a one-party-system and is not enough permeated with democratic principles. Therefore, the many spheres of discussion existing all over the country were taken over by political parties and diverted from their essential aim: discuss freely of the societal problems so as to influence the political action. On the contrary, they have become places of political propaganda

Full textThe intensity of schooling demand in Abidjan is linked to population growth. Usual indicators prove that schooling in this city rise to an appreciable development. The setting for schooling management in spite of its limits, has permitted to different actors with various motivations to respond to this strong demand for education. However, this development is uneven on spatial and structural point of views. In fact, school installations distribution is unequal and they seem concentred in some municipal communities. This situation take its origins in the economic and social story of Abidjan which affected precociously some spaces and the others later. Two main factors, population and available spaces, guide the settlement of schools, increased the spatial distortions of schooling development between the municipal communities. As far as schooling structure is concerned, elementary level expansion is notable. Spatial and structural disparities also result of actors motivations, of technical and financial restrictions typically to primary and secondary level. A space reserved to school can be defined in Abidjan urban space; its geographical aspects depend of school typology, their way of insertion in the urban environment and forms of settlement. Pupils and teachers move through this space; these alternating moving present characteristics which permit to specify the outline of the schooling space; these alternating migrations can be use to evaluate the educational system planning. In spite of what is done, the schooling rate flow down underlying observed for about then years raise up the persistence of problems link to the strongest population growth and to the relative high cost of educational system. This is why some specific voluntarists actions are necessary. These actions must emphasis on the increase in number of children send to school, becoming operational purpose. Spatial dimension of schooling phenomena which has been masked for a long time must be study. The resolving of schooling problems must be integrated in a global development policy while keeping their specificities

Full textIf, for many specialists, microcredit is seen as a new life for economical politics in developing countries, in view of its promotion notably through the media, its setting up and progress don’t seem as simple as that. Besides, many studies show that it doesn’t work the same way in every places. Thus, when obtained results seem excellent in South-East Asia, mediocre and lukewarm in Latin America, the results in Africa in general, and particularly in western Africa, are simply less good. It is then necessary to bring out the elements of explanation of such a difference of results and to indicate the difficulties the different actors are facing. In this perspective, one of the most recurrent difficulties seem to be the one of repayment, or even non-repayment of agreed loans with certain structures of microcredit. Therefore, based on a description of microcredit and an analysis of its working through an approach of formal and informal structures, this work is a sociological study. It shows that formal structures, generally based on voluntary service and/or selection based on material security don’t have a control system favourable to repayment, contrary to informal structures. In fact, whereas the first ones depend on social control, structured by friend, family and community ties. Ties themselves structured by the gift principle. In plain English, within microcredit formal systems, individuals’ repayments are less efficient because they consider theses systems as “stranger” elements in which they recognize themselves very little and of which they don’t depend for a living. This is not the case for informal systems. Thus, it is necessary to consider theses different principles in order to get better results

Full textSome 178 legume species have been identified in the surroundings of Lamto (Ivory Coast). Pod harvest over a five-year period (1981-86) has shown the existence of 65 species of seed-eating beetles and wasps representing 6 families (Anthribidae, Apionidae, Bruchidae, Cerambycidae, Curculionidae and Eurytomidae). After reviewing the fructification phenology of these legumes, we studied the biology and ecology of seed-eating insects (host-plant range, life cycle, percent seed eating rate). Forty-two chalcid species and at least six braconids (Hymenoptera} attack this seed-eating community. For each parasitoid we mention biological data (cycle, hosts, phenology, sex-ratio) and some ecological characteristics (specificity, constancy, preference, abundance and percentage parasitisme). Nearly all these species are larvo-nymphal ectoparasitic idiobionts with a 20-to-30 days life cycle. While specificity of seed-eating insects is high, parasitoids are mainly polyphagous. In fact, there is a gradual transition between specialists and generalists with a wide host range. Niche overlaps and niche breadths show that polyphagous species are grouped in two non-interactive sub-communities: one attacking the seed-eating beetles on trees and the ethers attacking those on grasses. A negative correlation (r=-0,75) was found between specificity on the one band, and constance, abundance and mean percentage parasitisme on the ether. This can be explained by a probabilistic approach: parasitoids are more or less sensitive to chemical or visual stimuli which define a preferential search volume. The smaller this volume, the more concentrated the parasite populations. Accordingly, host-locating probability, egg-laying probability, and so percentage parasitism increase. This approach can help in selecting a parasite for must characterize such a parasite and determine its biological control. We exact specificity by studying the potential hosts which are taxonomically and related to the pest. The choice should involve an orientated parasitic generalist combining a suitable ability to regulate host populations and adequate trophic adaptability. The second part, which only deals with systematic, describes 28 new species of Chalcidoidea and reviews afrotropical species of Dinarmus. It includes generic and specific identification keys of hymenoptera parasites of seed-eating beetles in West Africa, so that this thesis can be used as guide for identification. Finally, this second part shows the need for extensive taxonomical studies

Full textThe expansion of food markets in Abidjan come within the framework of a fast and recently decentralized urbanization. Different in their size and in the way they set up, the markets have conquered new territories and spread widely over the city. So urban consumers have access to abundant and various provisions. Highly structured trade networks control the supplying of the business capital of Côte d'Ivoire. Besides their supplying function, the markets open the way to modest but regular source of income for women. Moreover, they reinforce the urbanization by creating new buildings and livening areas up. New policies of market construction reveal the interest the authorities take in these spaces. However privatization raises social and town-planning problems

Full textThe Ivorian economic and financial life has been marked in recent decades by several economic and financial scandals. Despite their coarseness, many of these scandals have not given rise to judicial responses that we were entitled to expect. If we do not know the real reasons for this state of affairs, it is clear that such impunity can not continue. In support of the democratic transition outstanding, Ivory Coast now aspires to a real economic and financial development. To achieve this goal, it must include clean up its economic and financial life that can no longer accommodate the excesses and laxity of the time. Criminal law as it should be at the heart of this development. This is the meaning of this study on the role of criminal law in the Ivorian economic and financial life : first, to demonstrate how the Ivorian criminal law is an economic development means and secondly, to achieve identify the limits and then propose necessary improvements to the emergence of an Ivorian economic and financial criminal law more modern and efficient

Full textThis study was born of observing the streets of abidjan where an ever growing number of children and young people go about varied trade activities. This group, as a social category, can only be understood in the global context of the process of accelerated urbanisation which the ivory coast and other african countries is experiencing today. The consequences of this situation are many : problems in access to schooling and to a modern job, growing pauperisation of an important segment of the urban population. Using the methods of the questionnaire, panels, life stories and inquiries, we took as our sample, between 1992 and 1995, 80 persons employed as shoeshiners, as merchants selling newspapers or kleenex or keeping custudy over automobiles. We also questionned a dozen former street young now involved in professional training. The results of our investigation can be summarized under three topics: the first exposes the reasons for this social practice. While few are in fact illiterate, most of the children have left school or only went to the coranic school and thus have no qualification for a modern job. Secondly we explore the realm of the street : its organisation, types of sociability and conflicts. Here, the struggle for room in which to work: is at stake and constitutes the chief reason for sociability in the street. How do these persons see themselves ? how are they perceived by the society ? finally, we treat the young people's efforts for professional insertion and the opportunities they have : projects launched by non-governmental organisations and by international organisations working both with the state. Personal strategies to get out of the street are based on saving money to take over a business or to get a new activity started. However, these strategies come into conflict with the dire necessity of personal and family survival

Full textThe purpose of this work is to study the expansion of food crops for urban markets in Côte d'Ivoire. It's a new phenomenon by the scale, which results from the spectacular urban growth country for a few decades. In the first part, are studied the general conditions of emergence of food crops for scale: urban markets, potentialities of the countryside, evolution of food crops since colonization. The second part shows the development of food crops for feeding cities in the south of the country, where cash crops (issued from coffee and cocoa plantations) overshadow all others. The third part is about northern areas where export crops are not extended, and where food crops play an important part in various agricultures. In the fourth part, the study of transport, trade and its actors underlines the importance and complexity of relations between farmers and traders. The conclusion lays stress on the dynamism of peasantry, the adaptability of land systems, and the numerous consequences (for society and space) which are resulting from the development of food crops for sites in Cote d’Ivoire

Full textFollowing the example of other major cities in sub-Saharan Africa, Abidjan is going through a multifaceted crisis which, among others, finds expression in a rapid urban growth, the reduction of modern employments and the increase of informal activities. All this happens in a context where the State and administration are strongly weakened. Alike the whole socioeconomic sector, transport was affected by the crisis. Consequently, there was a quick space enlargement combined with the demographic pressure and changes of administrative principles influencing the overall system of common transport. This resulted in the growth of the private sectors of public transport such as woro-woro and gbaka, compensating for the lack of a regulating administration. But a number of prohibited practices such as corruption and racket have invaded the sector. Public transport is an important work supplier whose dynamics has improved the local urban transport area. Actually we are facing some administrative and urban development problems because the streets, pavements and crossroads are being turned away from their primary function. So there is an emergence of illegal passenger stations in many areas of the city. Since the local governments are inefficient in controlling the situation, the produced receipts of all these activities on the local area represent a financial hamper for the involved parties

Full textThe present work discusses the effects of family planning supply and demand on the evolution of contraceptive methods use and contraceptive continuation. The analysis is conducted on the national level where family planning activities still diffused, then on regional level, in Aboisso which as experience a family planning pilot programme supported by UNFPA. On the national level, the evolution of Ivorian fertility policy and family planning activities which is linked were examined thought officials speeches and policy statement. The evolution of family planning demand and contraceptive use were studied using data from Ivorian fertility survey of 1980-1981 and the demography and health survey of years 1994 and 1998-1999. More meticulous study of family planning supply and demand is conducted in Aboisso using data from small scale survey based on quantitative and qualitative approach lead close to the programme beneficiaries and services allowances of family planning from 1998 to 1999, and data collected by the ENSEA and IRD in 1993 and 1995. The complementarily of the family planning supply and demand roles in the progression of the use of contraceptive methods and in the duration of contraceptive use was confirmed in both national and regional level. The effects of programmes are ambivalent since some element like availability, knowledge and economical cost of births regulation methods and services alter quickly in way that is favourable to the increase of the use of contraceptive methods while other elements like non economical costs of births regulation (social, medical and psychological) and services quality do not do so. This means that the major challenges which arise to the family planning programmes lies in quality of services and non economical costs of births regulation

Full textIn Côte d'Ivoire, deforestation is an old problem that threatens forests, especially protected areas. In the coastal zone, rapid urbanization, rapid population growths, the economic and industrial development, particularly in Abidjan, have caused rapid deforestation. Destruction of natural environments is at the forefront of the National Parks and Reserves (PNR) policy against deforestation carried out by the government on the national territory, particularly in the littoral zone. This study focuses on national parks and Banco Ehotilé Islands, located in the Ivorian coastal zone. On the one hand, the Banco National Park is located on the outskirts of Abidjan, and it is surrounded by the various districts of the suburbs. Urbanization and pollution caused by human activities are the main threats that cause degradation. On the other side, the National Park of Ehotile Islands is located in a rural area of the Department of Adiake at the mouth of the Aby lagoon in the Atlantic Ocean. This region is characterized by a landscape dominated by agro-industrial plantations, especially oil palm, coconut graves and rubber. This reduces the land within the reach of small farmers and intensifies competition for land. The data used to study the dynamics of the vegetation cover both parks derived from Spot and Landsat satellite images, aerial photographs and our own field observations conducted in 2008 and 2009. These observations are written with the purpose of describing previous samples of vegetation and the other to draw a selective inventory of the flora in national parks. Surveys and interviews are conducted with a sample of 300 residents in the surrounding villages to gather their perceptions on the one hand, and understanding on the other hand their daily practices vis-à-vis forest resources of GNP and the PNIE. Study results show that landscape dynamics differ in the National Parks and Banco Ehotile Islands. Indeed, between 1986 and 2007, in the National Park of Ehotile Islands, the evolution of the vegetation was characterized by a decrease in the dense forest of land for about 49%, while the area covered by the mosaics culture and forest have increased by 156%. In addition, floristic surveys carried out in 123 plots of PNIE helped identify 197 plant species distributed among 64 families and 156 genera. In the park of Banco, unlike Ehotile islands, forest areas have experienced significant growth between 1992 and 2002 where dense closed canopy forests have increased by 115%. The floristic surveys have identified 233 plant species distributed among 73 families and 191 genera. In PNB as PNIE, flora and vegetation are being threatened by human activities including logging for domestic and agriculture

Full textThe current study aims at grasping the basis of student's sex life in the city of Abidjan. In Côte d'ivoire, sex education has been taught in schools for over a decade. According to the Department of Education, students' sexual behaviour is determined by the information they are given. In fact, the purpose of sex education is to change their sex life and therefore prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases such as Aids. But since it does not control the social phenomena which influence these young men's sexual attitudes, sex education in schools cannot achieve its goal. Thus, in addition to the educational sector, one has to examine life in urban areas in order to understand students' sexuality. That is why we visited different spheres including households, peers, religion, the media, as well as schools. Now, if these factors can shape sexual behaviour we can notice that they are sometimes contradictory. Some of them do not influence attitudes. They do not interfere in the development of sexual behaviours. What is more, every student will have a different attitude according to his own past and personality. Therefore, we come to the conclusion that these social factors are not relevant in understanding the students' sex life. To know why they behave in different ways and apprehend the determining factors of their sexual behaviour, one has to consider every students' personal development. Indeed, it is through the observation of personal developments that an event can appear suddenly. This has such an impact on the student that it may also bring along changes in his sex life. Consequently, a new perspective on life as well as sexual behaviour comes to light

Full textNowadays, the Ivoirian society evolution creates a disorder in the organisation of the traditional familial cell. It allows to explain partly the pathological troubles presented by the children met in abidjan at the children care center of adjame and the sos children's village of abobo. The use of the psychanalytical theory to approach the interpretation of the cases and to understand each child's reality, brings us to resort to the dimension of the tuboo and the law as a founder by the subject's language
