Abstract:
Five years ago in Theory and Research in Education, James R. Muir fired a new salvo in the debate regarding the merits of Isocrates’ educational program, a controversy that has endured for more than two millennia. Was the Isocratean program misguided and lowbrow, as in the estimations of Plato and Aristotle — or was it the most successful program of classical education, as in the later estimations of Cicero and Quintilian? Was Isocrates himself a middling intellect, as Marrou claims, or, worse, a progenitor of Hitler’s Third Reich, as Vitanza maintains — or was he the founder of modern liberal arts education, as Corbett and Welch believe? To date, the debate has dealt more with the reputation than the details of Isocrates’ program. In hopes of shedding additional light on the controversy, this article draws upon Isocrates’ own essays to present the goals, curriculum, and methods of his educational program.

Abstract:

The naturalization process of Clematis vitalba L. was studied in the territory of the Botanical Garden of South Federal University. It is established that species has high resistance to the climatic regional factors, is not affected by pests and diseases, and could produce viable seeds. Clematis vitalba seeds that are produced in Botanical Garden have deep physiological dormancy. The study of the phenological cycle of Clematis vitalba showed that this species belongs to the phenological group characterized by the early terms of the beginning and late completion of the growing season. This species has a long shoot growth, which provides good regeneration and active colonization of large area. Clematis vitalba spread over the woody communities of the Botanical garden and inhabit large areas due to vegetative propagation. We founded that the plant death at the seedling emergence stage caused by arid conditions was the main obstacle to the expansion of this species across the territory of Botanical Garden. We suggested that Clematis vitalba could be dangerous invasive species for floodplain and gully forest of the Rostov region.

Abstract:
The Vitazar preparation has a rich natural composition and antioxidant properties due to the high content of fat-soluble vitamins – A, D, E, polyunsaturated fatty acids – linoleic, linolenic, oleic, palmitic, as well as trace elements Ca and K, etc. To study the preparation effects on young male minks, animals of the standard black breed of Scandinavian selection were chosen by origin, live weight and age using the method of analogous groups. A total of 128 males participated in the experiment – 32 heads in each group. The first group of minks was the control one. In three experimental groups, Vitazar was added to the general household ration with a different dose of 1.0.2.0.3.0 ml/head with a frequency of three times a week. The preparation was given during two summer months – July and August. During the experiment, the minks were weighed at the beginning of each month. After slaughter and primary processing, the skins were sorted in accordance with GOST 27769–88.According to the data obtained, Vitazar has a positive effect on the live weight and skin production of young minks. The drug in the diet of males at a dose of 3.0 ml/head contributes to an increase in live weight by 191 g, the skin size by 0.6 dm2, the proportion of defect-free skins by 8.0% and the quality indicators by 4.0%. The optimal dose of the preparation was found to be 3.0 ml/head.The use of Vitazar in the optimal dose in the diet of male minks increased the cost of one skin by 63.3 rubles. Thу “Vitazar” preparation was studied on young minks for the first time.

Abstract:
Clematis plants play an important role in botanical gardens. Heat stress can destroy the activity, state and conformation of plant proteins, and its regulatory pathway has been well characterized in Arabidopsis and some crop plants. However, the heat resistance response mechanism in horticultural plants including Clematis has rarely been reported. Here, we identified a heat-tolerant clematis species, Clematis vitalba. The relative water loss and electrolytic leakage were significantly lower under heat treatment in Clematis vitalba compared to Stolwijk Gold. Differential expression heat-tolerant genes (HTGs) were identified based on nonparametric transcriptome analysis. For validation, one heat shock transcription factor, CvHSF30-2, extremely induced by heat stimuli in Clematis vitalba, was identified to confer tolerance to heat stress in Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Furthermore, silencing of HSF30-2 by virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) led to heat sensitivity in tobacco and Clematis, suggesting that the candidate heat-resistant genes identified in this RNA-seq analysis are credible and offer significant utility. We also found that CvHSF30-2 improved heat tolerance of Clematis vitalba by elevating heat shock protein (HSP) expression, which was negatively regulated by CvHSFB2a. Taken together, this study provides insights into the mechanism of Clematis heat tolerance and the findings can be potentially applied in horticultural plants to improve economic efficiency through genetic approaches.

Full text
Abstract:
Juvencus’ epic portrayal of Christ establishes a new kind of Christian heroism, a concept refined through intertextual engagement with the Old Latin Bible, the Aeneid, and imperial Latin epic. Christ-as-verbum, The Word, wields verbal power against the furor of the enemies of salvation. His virtus, transcending and redefining the martial valor of the Vergilian tradition, is derived not from human achievement but from the vertical economy of grace—it is a gift (munus, donum) of God the Father streaming abundantly from heaven to earth. Juvencus takes advantage of the expanded semantic range of virtus in late antiquity to subvert and repurpose the heroic core of Latin epic: the miracles (munera, dona) of Jesus expose the helplessness of humanity, and restore it to physical and spiritual health through forceful word-deeds (vitalia gesta, vitalia verba). Through its close identification with fides, Christ’s expansive virtus imparts heroic stature to even the weakest disciple.

Abstract:
Most commentators apply the phrase ‘vitans onus…iugi’ not only to the heifer but to Attis himself. When they ask what iugum Attis is avoiding, the immediate context provides no obvious answer. They are therefore compelled to interpret the iugum either in the light of a much earlier passage or in the light of a much later one. Neither procedure is satisfactory. On the other hand, at least one editor has proposed that the phrase ‘vitans onus…iugi’ does not apply to Attis himself but to the heifer alone. The comparison between Attis and the heifer then lies only in their frenzied speed; the yoke-avoiding action is external to the comparison and merely heightens the picture of the charging heifer. The obvious difficulty with this view is that the concept of a yoke, and more generally of avoiding servitude, plays an important role relevant to Attis later on in the poem. From line 50 onwards Attis sees himself as an erifuga anxious to escape from slavery to Cybele. And the account of Cybele's lion, sent to round him up, twice refers to the notion of freeing from a yoke (76 and 84).Both these traditional approaches concentrate on the literal meaning of the phrase vitans onus…iugi: they assume that the yoke itself is important and that it either does or does not make sense when applied to Attis. But if we focus instead upon the action which the whole phrase vitans onus…iugi suggests, then the description of the heifer has an apt application to Attis within its own immediate context.

Abstract:
Syndrome of anemia in foals manifests itself in the first weeks of their life, and occurs because of oxygen deficiency and excess of carbon dioxide after birth, and caused by a deficiency of trace minerals (iron, copper, cobalt, zinc, iodine, selenium), cyanocobalamin, and folic acid. For the experiment, we selected two groups of foals (age 20–30 days old) with pale conjunctiva. Animals of the experimental group were injected intramuscularly with Vitazal® 5 ml for 6 days. Foals of the control group received 6 ml of Ferrovet® intramuscularly, again after 10 days. The condition of erythrocytopoiesis was studied before drug administration and 30 days after treatment. It was found that 30 days after the administration of the drug in experimental group animals, the number of red blood cells increased by 31.4% (P < 0.001). In the control group, this indicator did not change significantly and did not differ from the values before the treatment. The hemoglobin content in experimental group foals after treatment significantly increased by 28.9% (P < 0,001). In contrast, 66.7% of animals in the control group showed oligochromemia. A similar trend of changes was noted in the determination of the hematocrit value. Changes were also found in the fractional composition of erythrocytes. In particular, after treatment in foals of both groups, the number of «old» erythrocytes decreased (P < 0.05). At the same time, the number of «mature» populations increased only in experimental group foals (P < 0.001). Regarding «young» erythrocyte populations, their number decreased in experimental animals by 8.3% (P < 0.001). However, in foals treated with Ferrovet® (control group), the proportion of «young» cells was increased after treatment, which apparently indicates the activation of proliferation and increased elimination of immature erythrocytes from the bone marrow. The iron content after the introduction of Vitazal® in foals of experimental group significantly increased by 45.6% and on average 26.8 ± 1.07 μmol/l (P < 0,01). In control animals after treatment, the content of this biometal did not change significantly. FTC values in the experimental group, namely TIBC and UIBC in 30 days after treatment significantly decreased (P < 0,001), while in foals of control group they remained unchanged. Iron metabolism directly depends on its transport form - transferrin protein. Throughout the study period, its content in control and experimental group animals was the same. However, the saturation of transferrin with iron in experimental group animals after the introduction of Vitazal® significantly increased by 19.8% and averaged 40.2 ± 1.26% (P < 0.001). In foals that received Ferrovet®, this indicator did not change 1 month after treatment. Thus, the study found a positive antianemic effect of the drug Vitazal® for anemic syndrome in foals.

Abstract:
AbstractPerforming a thorough inventory of alien plant species in the southern part of Lithuania, we found twelve alien plant species previously not registered in the country: Aruncus dioicus, Buxus sempervirens, Clematis vitalba, Clematis recta, Colutea arborescens, Erechtites hieraciifolius, Erigeron strigosus, Euphorbia marginata, Genista sagittalis, Lathyrus latifolius, Sempervivum arachnoideum and Silphium perfoliatum. All newly recorded alien species, except Erechtites hieraciifolius and possibly Genista sagittalis, have been introduced intentionally and escaped from cultivation. Ten species currently occur as casuals, whereas Colutea arborescens and Genista sagittalis are locally naturalised. Naturalisation of Buxus sempervirens and Euphorbia marginata in the foreseen future is unlikely in Lithuania, naturalisation of Aruncus dioicus, Sempervivum arachnoideum and Silphium perfoliatum is possible. In contrast, naturalisation of the other five species is expected in the nearest future. Invasion of seven analysed alien species is unlikely in Lithuania, whereas Clematis vitalba, Colutea arborescens, Erechtites hieraciifolius, Erigeron strigosus, Lathyrus latifolius have the potential to become invasive in the country. Therefore, their reproduction and spread should be monitored, and measures for prevention of their invasion should be applied, if necessary.

The reflection that I carry out in these lines is articulated into two levels, in the first whereof I define the concepts required to make evident the community of import existing between miserliness and the conception of existence that capitalism imposes; I shall in the second level show how that is brought to light in a film that shows how capitalism has attained a global phase ruled by mass-media. That is to say, I shall not deal with cinema but in so far as it makes us see clearly the way miserliness structures throughout the comprehension of existence that determines us, which is why the reader can skip the first section and read directly the second one, devoted to cinema. On the other hand, I make it clear that I shall through the dissertation resort to sources that belong to different fields of culture, so that I shall deal with an intellectually complex subject.

Picciau, Rosangela, Marco Porceddu, and Gianluigi Bacchetta. "Can alternating temperature, moist chilling, and gibberellin interchangeably promote the completion of germination in Clematis vitalba seeds?" Botany 95, no. 8 (August 2017): 847–52. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/cjb-2017-0039.

Full text
Abstract:
Each plant species has particular requirements for seed germination, and some of them respond differently to constant or alternating temperature regimes. In this study, the interchangeable effects of different treatments and temperatures on the completion of seed germination of Clematis vitalba L. were investigated. The seeds were tested with a constant (from 5 °C to 25 °C) or a fluctuating (25/10 °C) temperature regime, and the effect of gibberellic acid (GA3), incubation at warm (W) or cold (C) temperatures while being imbibed, and drying after ripening (DAR) were evaluated. The final germination percentages and the time in days required to reach 50% of germination (T50) were calculated. GA3 and C significantly enhanced completion of seed germination at all of the temperatures tested. A strong positive effect of alternating temperature was observed, which triggered completion of seed germination regardless of treatment. Under the fluctuating temperature, the chilled seeds had the most rapid germination. Low germination rates were observed for both control and DAR treatments. Seeds of C. vitalba display a certain degree of dormancy, which can be broken by moist chilling and GA3 treatments. Moreover, alternating temperature stimulates the completion of seed germination by satisfying certain physiological requirements for germination under constant temperatures.

Abstract:
Fern is cosmopolitan plants which are almost scattered in all parts of the world, one of which is found in Baluran National Park and in Malang. The potential and benefits of these ferns are quite important for agriculture and medicine because of the chemical compounds they have, especially in Pteris vitatta L. This study aimed to analyze secondary metabolites contained in P. vittata L. in Baluran National Park, Situbondo and in Malang. The samples used were leaves and rhizome P. vittata extracted using methanol 96%, followed by a qualitative test of the content of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, polyphenols, tannins, saponins, using phytochemical screening methods with several reagents. The results showed that the leaves and Rhizome P. vittata L.. in Baluran National Park, Situbondo were positively containing secondary metabolites of terpenoids, polyphenols, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids (Dragendorf and Bouchardat reagents), whereas flavonoids were not present in all samples. However, the results of P. vitatta L. phytochemical screening around Malang State University positively contained flavonoids, polyphenols, terpenoids, alkaloids (Wagner and Dragendorf reagents). The difference in results from these two places is because the secondary metabolite content in plants is affected by stressful environmental conditions such as soil texture where it is grown or is affected by the precursors of the secondary metabolites of the metabolites.
