Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease of the skin characterized by epidermal depigmentation that results from CD8+ T cell-mediated destruction of pigment producing melanocytes. Vitiligo affects up to 1% of the population and current treatments are moderately effective at facilitating repigmentation by suppressing cutaneous autoimmune inflammation to promote melanocyte regeneration. Abstract:
Vitiligo is an acquired idiopathic hypomelanotic skin disorder characterised by depigmented macules due to loss of cutaneous melanocytes. Evidence suggests that autoimmunity plays a role in the pathogenesis of the disease, since antibodies and T cells against melanocytes can be detected in vitiligo patients. A major goal in vitiligo research is to identify the targets of the immune response in patients, as this will contribute to defining the pathomechanisms of the disease. Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease in which the pigment producing cells of the epidermis, melanocytes, are targeted for destruction by CD8+ T cells specific for melanocyte/melanoma-shared antigens. Previous work has identified IFNg as the central cytokine driving disease pathogenesis in both human patients and in our mouse model of vitiligo.
