Abstract:
Thirty-two new records for shore fishes were made at the Trindade-Martin Vaz oceanic insular complex, located 1,160 km off the Brazilian coast. These records are related to an increase in sampling effort and to temporal variation in population size. Newly found but very abundant species hypothetically exemplify temporal variations in population size. The Vitória-Trindade submarine chain also may function as a series of stepping-stones facilitating transport of typically coastal species. The new records reveal a lack of knowledge of the fish fauna of this unique location. Studies aimed at the e

Oceanic islands and seamounts play an important role on the origin and maintenance of biodiversity, however, these environments are still poorly understood. Here we report 15 new records of reef fish species for the Davis Seamount, Trindade Island and Martin Vaz Archipelago, in the Vitoria-Trindade Chain (VTC). Such isolated sites are among the last frontier for shallow reef exploration in the South Atlantic, and more scientific effort is needed to better understand their biogeography and to help in conservation efforts.

This work is the second part of the analysis of ostracods from the Vitória-Trindade Chain ̶ consisting of four seamounts and Trindade Island—which resulted in the recording of 28 species belonging to 14 genera and eight families. Five new species of Cytherellidae, Bairdiidae, Bythocytheridae, and Xestoleberididae are described in this paper, as follows: Keijcyoidea oceanica sp. nov., Bairdoppilata vitoriensis sp. nov., Vandenboldina kyryia sp. nov., Xestoleberis acuminata sp. nov. and Xestoleberis caperata sp. nov.

Oceanic waters are difficult to assess, and there are many gaps in knowledge regarding cetacean occurrence. To fill some of these gaps, this article provides important cetacean records obtained in the winter of 2010 during a dedicated expedition to collect visual and acoustic information in the Vitória-Trindade seamounts. We observed 19 groups of cetaceans along a 1300-km search trajectory, with six species being identified: the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae, N = 9 groups), the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus, N = 1), the Antarctic minke whale (Balaenoptera bonaerensis, N = 1), the r

This work presents a checklist of ichthyoplankton collected along the Vitória-Trindade chain with oblique bongo hauls to a depth of 20 m in the summer and in the winter. Larvae were classified according the adult habitat as reef, epipelagic or mesopelagic. The variables season, depth, sampling time, environment type and distance from the continental shelf were used to test the correlation with the larval density of each larval category. In the summer, 3,897 larvae were captured (identified at the family, genera or species level, n = 44, 33 and 82, respectively) and 1,026 larvae were captured i

Abstract Rhodoliths are nodules mainly composed of crustose coralline algae with subordinate encrusting organisms, formed by successive overlapping encrustation. The subspheroidal rhodoliths from the Vitória-Trindade Seamount Chain (Jaseur Seamount and Trindade Island shelf; Brazil, southwestern Atlantic), sampled at water depths from 65 to 74 m, were built by crustose coralline algae (Harveylithon, Lithophyllum, Lithothamnion, Mesophyllum, Roseolithon, and Sporolithon) and subordinated encrusting foraminifera (agglutinated, unidentified hyaline, and Homotrema rubrum), bryozoans, serpulids, an
