Abstract:
The article discusses the concepts of continuous vacuum apparatus operation: vertical VKT (VKT – Verdampfungs-Kristallisations-Turm) and horizontal cascade of VKH vacuum apparatus (VKH —horizontal vacuum pan) from BMA (Germany). The advantages and features of the vertical continuous vacuum apparatus VKT are shown, as well as the possibilities for increasing the efficiency of the product department of sugar factories. Thanks to the special design of the crystallization chambers, the low massecuite level above the heating chamber and the use of mechanical stirrers in each chamber, the VKT apparatus can operate without difficulty with a very small temperature difference between heating steam and massecuite, as well as with an absolute heating steam pressure well below 1 bar. With optimal use of VKT vacuum apparatus, a variety of energy-saving schemes can be implemented, for example, double-effect evaporation in the crystallization section. Part of the secondary crystallization steam is used to heat one of the VKT units, which saves the heating steam of the evaporator unit used for this purpose. With an increase in the productivity of the sugar factory, it is possible to quickly equip the VKT apparatus with an additional chamber. The device works continuously throughout the season, especially with products with massecuite purity of more than 94%. The chambers are cleaned without stopping the entire apparatus. The boiling of massecuite of all stages of crystallization in VKT devices ensures a uniform operating mode of the food compartment, allows to achieve an increase in sugar yield and helps to reduce steam consumption at the plant.

Abstract:
Vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT) has been widely used in regional planning as a key sustainability performance indicator. Many regional growth plans for reducing work trip VKT have been proposed, with a focus on land use development in employment centers. Despite the potential impact of urban form on the reduction of VKT, the fundamentals of how this takes place remain unclear. This study analyzes the relationship between urban form, VKT, and mode shares by examining office commuting patterns in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) through a structural equation modeling approach. The model supports the substantial impact of urban form on the reduction of VKT; however, it indicates that such an impact is made mostly through shifting modes, rather than directly on reduced travel distances. This model is then used to evaluate critically a regional growth plan for the GTHA, finding that strategies focusing solely on increasing land use densities in employment centers are not likely to reduce regional VKT significantly without also easing commuting auto dependency. Thus, it is recommended that more sustainable travel alternatives for workers in employment centers should be provided to achieve a sufficient reduction in VKT.

We investigate the effect of lane kilometers of roads on vehicle-kilometers traveled (VKT) in US cities. VKT increases proportionately to roadway lane kilometers for interstate highways and probably slightly less rapidly for other types of roads. The sources for this extra VKT are increases in driving by current residents, increases in commercial traffic, and migration. Increasing lane kilometers for one type of road diverts little traffic from other types of road. We find no evidence that the provision of public transportation affects VKT. We conclude that increased provision of roads or public transit is unlikely to relieve congestion. (JEL R41, R48)

This article helps improve the understanding about the safety performance of longer combination vehicles (LCVs) relative to other articulated trucks operating on rural highways, using evidence from the Canadian portion of the CANAMEX trade corridor. The analysis reveals that from a collision rate perspective, LCVs as a group have better safety performance than other articulated trucks. Turnpike doubles have the lowest collision rate of all articulated truck types (16 collisions per 100 million vehicle-kilometres of travel or VKT), followed by Rocky Mountain doubles (32 collisions per 100 million VKT). The collision rate for triple trailer combinations (62 collisions per 100 million VKT) is higher than the collision rates for tractor semitrailers (42 collisions per 100 million VKT) and legal-length tractor double trailers (44 collisions per 100 million VKT). These results are an important input for civil engineering and transport policy decisions concerning longer combination vehicle operations.

Some empirical findings are presented on the relationship between urban form and work trip commuting efficiency, drawn from the analysis of 1986 work trip commuting patterns in the greater Toronto area. Work trip commuting efficiency is measured with respect to the average number of vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT) per worker in a given zone. Preliminary findings include VKT per worker increases as one moves away from both the central core of the city and from other high-density employment centers within the region; job-housing balance, per se, shows little impact on commuting VKT; and population density, in and of itself, does not explain variations on commuting VKT once other urban structure variables have been accounted for.

The vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT) is an important factor need to be considered in urban freight transport or logistics planning. At present, some quantitative models have been constructed to estimate the VKT, and study also indicates that the time window of vehicle working hours have great effects on the length of urban distribution trips. But there is no VKT estimate models include the window time factor until now. So we introduced a two dimensional orders density: time dimension and space dimension. Then the density is substituted into the Figliozzi’s model, and after a series mathematic derivation, we get a new VKT estimate model considered the window time of vehicle, which is closer to reality station.

SummaryIntroduction: This article is part of the Focus Theme of Methods of Information in Medicine on “New Methodologies for Patients Rehabilitation”.Background: The ecological validity of paper-and-pencil neuropsychological tests is currently a matter of debate. Arguments in favor of alternatives indicate that paper-and-pencil forms are unable to account for both mental and functional aspects of cognitive functioning.Objectives: In this study we developed a new neuropsychological evaluation test – the Virtual Kitchen Test (VKT) – devised to evaluate frontal brain functioning in cognitively impaired individuals. We designed this test according to the rationale of the Trail Making Test (TMT), in order to capture frontal lobe abilities during a more ecologically valid task.Methods: Forty-nine participants, 25 from a clinical sample of patients diagnosed with Alcohol Dependence Syndrome, plus 24 healthy participants.Results: Execution errors and task completion time were significantly higher in the clinical sample. Also, scores on the new VKT showed moderate to high positive correlations with scores on the TMT. Furthermore, the overall discriminant performance of the VKT was high for both of its indicators.Conclusions: Overall results support the ability of the VKT to evaluate frontal lobe functions. The best cut-off scores based on this sample are discussed.

In this paper, carbon emissions of a monorail transit are calculated using the method of whole life cycle, which can be divided into four stages: material manufacturing stage, construction stage, operation stage and demolition stage. In the operation phase, the units are PKT (Passenger Kilometers Travelled) and VKT (Vehicle Kilometers Travelled), while in other three stages, the unit is 1 km. The results show that the carbon emissions from the 1km length monorail are 6271.204 tons. In addition, in the operation stage, it is found that the PKT index and VKT index of Chongqing monorail transportation are 0.07468 and 3.31933 respectively, far lower than those of subways in the same city. For PKT indicators of other rail transits, from small to large, they are light rail, tram, subway, APM and maglev. As for VKT indicators, from small to large, they are tram, light rail, subway, APM and maglev. The PKT index of Beijing subway is the lowest compared with that of other cities.

ABSTRAKSistem transportasi darat berbasis jalan di Jakarta memberikan kontribusi tertinggi dalam inventarisasi emisi CO2 DKI Jakarta sebesar 45% dengan jumlah 19,61 juta ton CO2 pada tahun 2005. Meskipun ada beberapa strategi pada berbagai peraturan, kebijakan, dan kegiatan yang mengarah pada pengurangan emisi CO2, tata kelola hal-hal tersebut terpecah dalam hal mendefinisikan metode yang dapat diandalkan dalam mengukur emisi CO2 dari sektor transportasi berbasis jalan darat. Pendekatan top-down yang digunakan pada tahun 2005 tampaknya tidak valid untuk digunakan pada masa mendatang. Sementara itu, menggunakan metode yang sama pada tahun 2015, emisi CO2 meningkat 270% dan mencapai hampir 50 juta ton CO2. Karena data jarak tempuh kendaraan (VKT) tidak memadai, tesis ini memperkirakan emisi CO2 dari 379 km jalan di Jakarta, yang terdiri dari 139 km jalan tol dan 240 km jalur BRT, menghasilkan sebanyak 15,21 juta ton CO2 pada tahun 2015. Perhitungan ini hanya mencakup 6% dari total jalan di Jakarta. Meskipun, hal ini hanya bagian integral dari seluruh perhitungan emisi CO2 dari transportasi darat, jumlah ini mencapai 30% dari hasil top-down. Penulis juga melakukan studi banding dengan Beijing dan New Delhi. Indonesia tertinggal di belakang Cina dan India dalam menerapkan standar emisi kendaraan. Dalam mengembangkan metode yang tepat pada perhitungan emisi CO2 sektor transportasi berbasis jalan darat; data yang memadai harus sering direkap. Although there were some ample strategies on the various regulations, policies, and projects that led to a reduction of CO2 emission, the governance of those plans are scattered in term of defining the reliable method on measuring traffic-related CO2 emission. The top-down approach that utilise in 2005 seemed not valid to be used in the future. Meanwhile, using the same method in 2015, the traffic-related CO2 emission increased 270% and reached almost 50 million tons CO2. Due to the inadequate vehicle kilometer travelled (VKT) data, this thesis estimates the CO2 emission from 379 km roads in Jakarta, consisting of 139 km of highway and 240 km of BRT lanes, resulted as much as 15.21 million tons CO2 in 2015. This calculation only covers 6% of the total road in Jakarta. Although, it is only an integral part of the whole CO2 emission inventory form road-based transportation, this number reaches 30% from the top-down result. The author also did the comparative study with Beijing and New Delhi. Indonesia is lagging behind China and India in implementing the vehicle emission standards. In develop precise method on traffic-related CO2 emission; the adequate data should be recorded frequently. Beijing and New Delhi are in the forefront in term of VKT data, while Jakarta still deemed to utilise the gasoline consumption data (top-down approach).Keywords: road-based transportation system, CO2 emission, gasoline consumption, vehicle kilometer travelled (VKT)

Abstract:
Many western countries have seen a plateau and subsequent decline in car travel during the early 21st century. What has generated particular interest and debate is the claim that the development cannot only be explained by changes in traditional explanatory factors such as GDP, fuel prices and land-use. Instead, it has been argued, the observed trends are indications of substantial changes in lifestyles, preferences and attitudes to car travel and thus, not just a temporary plateau but a true peak in car use. This thesis is a compilation of five papers, studying the issue on a national, international, regional and city scale through quantitative analysis of aggregate administrative data and individual travel survey data. It concludes that the aggregate development of car travel per capita can be explained fairly well with the traditional model variables GDP and fuel price. Furthermore, this thesis shows that spatial context and policy become increasingly important in car use trends: car use diverges over time between city, suburban and rural residents of Sweden and other European countries, while gender and to some extent income become less differentiating for car use.<br><p>QC 20170918</p>

Abstract:
Today's development of spark ignited (SI) engines is to a large extent focused on downsizing, i.e where a large naturally aspirated engine is replaced with a smaller turbocharged engine with the same output power. This gives a fuel consumption benefit but worsen the transient response since the torque build-up gets dependent on the turbocharger dynamics. To mitigate this problem, technology like variable geometry turbine (VGT), which has been widely used on diesel engines, and variable valve timing (VVT) can be used. In this thesis, it has been investigated how VVT and VGT should be controlled during a torque transient in order to achieve fastest possible torque build-up. The engine that has been considered is a 2 liter, direct injected, SI-engine equipped with a turbocharger with VGT. This has been investigated by applying an optimization routine from Matlab to a GT-Power model of the engine and from measurements on the actual engine. The optimization in GT-Power showed that measures which takes both the naturally aspirated part and the boosted part of the transient into account increases with the torque, and that the optimal transients had an approximately linear relationship between intake and exhaust pressure. Two control strategies based on these results were tested on the engine. In the first control strategy, the VVT and VGT were controlled such that the product of volumetric efficiency and exhaust pressure was maximized. This resulted in quite moderate torque build-up and no improvement compared to using a stationary calibration in transients. In the second control strategy the VGT was used to closed loop control the exhaust pressure towards an exhaust pressure reference, dependent on the current intake pressure. This, combined with controlling the VVT according to the stationary calibration, resulted in an apparent improvement in the torque build-up. This strategy was found to give good performance also at slightly lower oil and water temperature than nominal but the sensitivity towards gain errors in the intake or exhaust pressure measurements were quite high. This sensitivity can be handled by limit how much the control actions from the exhaust pressure controller are allowed to deviate from the stationary calibration.<br>Dagens utveckling av Otto-motorer är till stor del fokuserad på "downsizing", det vill säga att en stor sugmotor ersätts med en mindre överladdad motor med samma effekt. Detta ger en minskning i bränsleförbrukning men sämre transientrespons eftersom momentuppbyggnaden blir beroende av turbons dynamik. För att minska denna effekt så kan teknik som turbo med variabel turbingeometri (VGT), som har använts i stor utsträckning på dieselmotorer, samt variabla ventiltider (VVT), användas. I detta arbete har det undersökts hur VVT och VGT ska styras under en momenttransient för att uppnå snabbast möjliga momentuppbyggnad. Motorn som arbetet har utförts på är en 2 liters, direktinsprutad Otto-motor där den ursprungliga turbon har ersatts med en med VGT. Undersökningen har gjorts genom att applicera en optimeringsrutin från Matlab på en GT-Power modell av motorn samt från mätningar på motorn. Optimeringen i GT-Power visade att storheter som beaktar både sugmotordelen och den överladdade delen av transienten ökar när momentet ökar och att de optimala transienterna hade ett approximativt linjärt samband mellan insugstryck och avgastryck. Två reglerstrategier som bygger på dessa resultat testades på motorn. I den första strategin styrdes VVT och VGT så att produkten av volumetrisk verkningsgrad och avgastryck maximerades. Detta resulterade i måttligt snabb momentuppbyggnad och ingen förbättring jämfört med att använda en stationär kalibrering i transienter. I den andra strategin användes VGT:n för att styra avgastrycket enligt en referens som beror av insugstrycket.Detta kombinerat med att styra ventilerna enligt den stationära kalibreringen resulterade i en klar förbättring i momentuppbyggnad. Denna reglerstrategi visade sig ge goda resultat också vid något lägre olje- och vattentemperatur än nominellt, men känsligheten för fel i insugs- eller avgastryckmätningen är relativt hög. Denna känslighet kan hanteras genom att begränsa hur mycket styrsignalen från regulatorn tillåts avvika från den stationära kalibreringen.

Abstract:
This essay is in three parts. Each part, or short essay, deals with a novel that has a collection of poetry appended to it. The novels are 'Big Sur' by Jack Kerouac, 'How to Save Your Own Life' by Erica Jong, and 'V.T.' by Philip Lee. In the short essays I explore some of the relationships between the poetry and prose in the novels, and touch on how the authors present themselves by the inclusion of poetry, ostensibly written by them. Note on why I've chosen to include essays on 'Big Sur' and 'How to Save Your Own Life': I've been a fan of Kerouac since my late teens, and Jong since my early twenties (I was born in 1956). Specifically, I've admired Kerouac for his depiction of men in search of a purpose in life, and Jong for her depiction of heterosexually active feminist women. The combination could be explosive, like tossing ice cubes into a hot chip pan. My novel, in a somewhat safe (ie sealed) historical setting, is only a first attempt at bringing these two important strands of literary endeavour together.

Syftet med denna studie är att få syn på hur barn och pedagoger kommunicerar med varandra vid måltidssituationer i förskolan. Anledningen till att vi har valt just detta område är för att vi tidigare har upplevt att barn ibland blir behandlade olika, utifrån kön, under måltidssituationer. Vi vill med denna studie få syn på om dessa skillnader finns och hur de yttrar sig. Vårt material består av videofilmade observationer. Materialet har sedan analyserats utifrån tre teoretiska perspektiv; Shannon och Weavers kommunikationsteori, Hirdmans genusteori och Foucaults maktteori. Vi har även använt oss av två observationsscheman för att få syn på pedagoger och barns kommunikation. Vårt resultat visade att det fanns skillnader i pedagogernas bemötande av barnen. Hirdmans genusteori hjälpte oss att se dessa skillnader ur ett genusperspektiv. Det visade sig att pojkar tilläts mer och blev mer uppmuntrade att prata än vad flickor blev. Medan flickor var de som tog mest initiativ till att tala och sökte mest bekräftelse. Resultatet visade även att barnen kommunicerade som mest med varandra när pedagogen inte var närvarande vid matbordet. Med hjälp av Foucaults maktteori kunde vi försöka förstå varför barnens kommunikation med varandra yttrade sig på detta sätt. Shannon och Weavers kommunikationsteori användes för att ge en övergripande bild av kommunikationen och vilka eventuella kommunikationsproblem som kunde uppstå under måltiderna.

Os dados do experimento de produção foram coletados com 10 usuários avançados de língua inglesa. As amostras foram coletadas de cada participante usando dois protocolos de elicitação. As respostas foram dadas dentro da frase: " I would say _(eu diria_)". O estímulo consistiu de três grupos de nove palavras, cada grupo com uma oclusiva surda precedendo vogais posteriores - três produções para cada. As medidas do VOT das amostras de fala foram gravadas Laboratório de Acústica da UFSC, usando o CSL e foram analisadas no Praat. No experimento de percepção, os participantes ouviram 120 produções aleatórias de três sílabas com valores de VOT condizentes aos do inglês e do português-brasileiro. Eles foram instruídos a identificar as oclusivas nas sílabas como o /t/ ou /d/ do inglês. Os resultados sugerem a transferência de valores de VOT de segunda língua para a língua nativa e um elo aparente entre produção e percepção.

Para el análisis de viabilidad de la propuesta se realizaron diversos experimentos para sustentar la propuesta de negocio y su rentabilidad. Asimismo, se realizaron validaciones de la venta de los jugos naturales y las interacciones con el cliente por medio de las redes sociales.Los canales digitales permitió conocer que esta idea de negocio era muy bien acogida por las personas que interactúan con las publicaciones de las páginas de Facebook e Instagram de Juicy Vit. Por otro lado, se ha podido determinar que el negocio será rentable,ya que de acuerdo a los diversos indicadores financieros se ha podido determinar la rentabilidad del proyecto. Por último, las ventas proyectadas para los próximos 5 años nos brindan resultados positivos por lo que el proyecto es rentable. Esto se debe a que los consumidores debido a la coyuntura actual consumen más productos naturales a base de frutas frescas que no contengan colorantes, etc. Asimismo, evaluando diferentes escenarios entre optimista y pesimista los resultados son beneficiosos para Juyci Vit.<br>The purpose of this research work is to present the business idea of ​​natural juices, whose name is “Juicy Vit”. It is a well-known fact that hemorrhages are observed in wholly breastfed infants beyond the neonatal period. In order to clarify vitamin K (VK)-deficiency, it is necessary to follow-up the absorption and excretion of VK2.1. To 128 cases of newborns. i) The activity of VK-dependent factors(II, VII, X) were determined by Hepaplastin test(HPT), ii) Using Latex-test, PIVKA-II was tested. We found values of HPT (Y) and PIVKA-II (X) to be inversely proportional in the relation. Y=6l.9 - 6.7 X (r= -0.3). 2. These 15 cases of hypoprothrombinemia, VK2 6mg, VK2 2mgwere given, and plasma VK2-concentration was measured by gas chromatography. After 3 hours VK2 6mgconcentration was 1030ng/ml; VK2 2mg, was 224ng/ml. This clearly shows a dose-response relation. 3. VK2 transplacental transport was also proved by using umbilical venous blood after Cesarean section. (Before Cesarean section, VK2 60mgwas given. ) In umbilical venous blood, relatively high doses of VK2 (50 - 120ng/ml) were demonstrated. Additionally, the y-carboxylglutamic acid-concentration in the urine of newborn, who received VK2-syrup was higherthan those who did not receive it.

Abstract:
Plasma levels of vitamin K (VK) and VK dependent proteins ( factor E, factor VH, factor X, protein C and osteocalcin)were determined before and after VK administration to 22 newborn infants. Vitamin K2 syrup ( 2 mg/kg of body weight ) was orally administered to 9 healthy premature, 11 high risk and 2 VK deficient infants under 3 days of age. VK families extracted from plasma were separated by high performance liquid chromatography using a Cosmosil 5 Ci8 column, and separated VK families were detected by a fluorometry after their reaction with ethanolic sodium borohydride in a reaction coil connected by one-line to a chromatographic column. Total activity of factor E, factor VE and factor X was assayed by a Normotest ( Nyegaard ), and protein C was measured by protac/APTT and protac/chromogenic substrate ( S-2366 ) functional assay system ( American Diagnostica ). Osteocalcin levels were assayed by using of a RIA method before and after the absorption of plasma by hydroxyapatite.After VK administration, plasma VK2 ( menaquinone-4 ) content increased from levels less than 0.012yg/ml to levels between 15.9 and 70.9μg/ml, excluding one case in whom plasma VK was not detected after VK administration. Compared with Normotest values and osteocalcin levels of age-matched healthy newborn infants treated without VK, premature, high risk and VK deficient infant levels significantly increased after 24 hrs and after 7 days of VK administration. No correlation was seen between the increase of plasma VK contents and the increase of Normotest values after VK administration. On the other hand, no significant increase of protein C assayed by both methods was observed in healthy premature and high risk infants after VK administration.These results indicate that the change of protein C after VK treatment is different from that of factor II, VII, X and osteocalcin.

Abstract:
Variable geometry turbine (VGT) has been widely applied in internal combustion engines to improve the engine transient response and torque at low speed. One of the most popular variable geometry turbine is the variable nozzle turbine (VNT), in which the nozzle vanes can be rotated along the pivoting axis and thus the flow passage through the nozzle can be adjusted to match with different engine operating conditions. One disadvantage of the VNT is the turbine efficiency degradation due to the leakage flow in the nozzle endwall clearance, which is needed to allow the nozzle vanes to rotate without sticking. Especially at small nozzle open condition, there is large loading on the nozzle and high pressure gradient between the nozzle pressure and suction side. Strong leakage flow exists inside the nozzle endwall clearance from pressure side to suction side, leading to large flow loss and turbine stage efficiency degradation. In the present paper, a novel split sliding variable nozzle turbine (SSVNT) has been proposed to reduce the nozzle leakage flow and to improve turbine stage efficiency. The idea is to divide the nozzle into two parts: one part is fixed and the other part can slide along the partition surface. The mechanism of nozzle flow passage variation in SSVNT is different from that of the traditional pivoting VNT. The sliding vane and the fixed vane together form an integrated vane. The flow of the turbine is determined by the passage of the integrated vanes. When moving the sliding vane to large radius position, the nozzle flow passage opens up and the turbine has high flow capacity. When moving the sliding vane towards small radius position, the nozzle flow passage closes down and the turbine has low flow capacity. As the fixed vane doesn’t need endwall clearance, there is no leakage flow inside the fixed vane and the total leakage flow through the integrated vane can be reduced. Based on calibrated numerical modeling, the analysis results showed that there is up to 12% turbine stage efficiency improvement with the SSVNT design at small nozzle open condition while maintaining the same flow capacity and efficiency at large nozzle open condition, compared to the conventional VNT. The mechanism of efficiency improvement in the SSVNT design has also been discussed.

Verification, validation, and testing (VVT) are the primary means of risk reduction in the product development process. Through systematic and early VVT strategy planning and continuous monitoring of the product development activities rework can be avoided and significant product lifecycle cost reductions can be achieved. In this paper a VVT process modeling procedure is described, which offers an effective method for reducing programmatic and technical risk through providing valuable assistance in the VVT strategy planning process. Programmatic risk reduction in the VVT process modeling procedure can be achieved by the elimination of redundant VVT activities, optimization of test schedule and restructuring of VVT activities into clusters based on the input needs of the tests and the deliveries of the product development activities. Through iterations in the VVT process during VVT strategy planning, the most effective combination of VVT activities can be found for the VVT goals and objectives. Iterations in the VVT process modeling procedure can be made based on the different durations, costs and effects on quality of the different VVT activities and methods applied at different points in the product lifecycle. Since the VVT strategy planning is an iterative process, the VVT process modeling procedure can be used to update the VVT process after every critical decision and milestone in the product development. The modeling concept for verification, validation and testing processes introduced in this paper, is currently being developed in a European research project, called SysTest (more information on the SysTest project can be found under: http://www.secoe.org/0105.htm).

Value added tax is a key tax for generating revenue in Zimbabwe and all African states, and for financing the budget in African countries. VAT revenue has an essential role in budgetary policymaking. Every year revenue authorities are not collecting large amounts of VAT for various reasons, including ineffective administration and tax evasion. This brings the question of the reform of the VAT system to the forefront. In Zimbabwe, attempts to improve VAT revenue collection have been made over several years. Hopes were pinned on the use of fiscalisation and audits of VAT refunds.1 However, traders continue to evade VAT – and this has led to the introduction of value added withholding tax to improve VAT revenue collection.
