Pattison, George. A Rhetorics of the Word. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198813514.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
A Rhetorics of the Word is the second volume of a three-part philosophy of Christian life. It approaches Christian life as expressive of a divine calling or vocation. The word Church (ekklesia) and the role of naming in baptism indicate the fundamental place of calling in Christian life. However, ideas of vocation are difficult to access in a world shaped by the experience of disenchantment. The difficulties of articulating vocation are explored with reference to Weber, Heidegger, and Kierkegaard. These are further connected to a general crisis of language, manifesting in the degradation of political discourse (Arendt) and the impact of new communications technology on human discourse. This impact can be seen as reinforcing an occlusion of language in favour of rationality already evidenced in the philosophical tradition and technocratic management. New possibilities for thinking vocation are pursued through the biblical prophets (with emphasis on Buber’s and Rosenzweig’s reinterpretation of the call of Moses), Saint John, and Russian philosophies of language (Florensky to Bakhtin). Vocation emerges as bound up with the possibility of being name-bearers, enabling a mutuality of call and response. This is then evidenced further in ethics and poetics, where Levinas and Hermann Broch (The Death of Virgil) become major points of reference. In conclusion, the themes of calling and the name are seen to shape the possibility of love—the subject of the final part of the philosophy of Christian life: A Metaphysics of Love.

Eliot, George, and K. M. Newton. Daniel Deronda. Edited by Graham Handley. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199682867.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
She felt herself standing at the game of life with many eyes upon her, daring everything to win much.’ Gwendolen Harleth gambles her happiness when she marries a sadistic aristocrat for his money. Beautiful, neurotic, and self-centred, Gwendolen is trapped in an increasingly destructive relationship, and only her chance encounter with the idealistic Deronda seems to offer the hope of a brighter future. Deronda is searching for a vocation, and in embracing the Jewish cause he finds one that is both visionary and life-changing. Damaged by their pasts, and alienated from the society around them, they must both discover the values that will give their lives meaning. George Eliot’s powerful novel is set in a Britain whose ruling class is decadent and materialistic, its power likely to be threatened by a politically emergent Germany. The novel’s exploration of sexuality, guilt, and the will to power anticipates later developments in fiction, and its linking of the personal and the political in a context of social and economic crisis gives it especial relevance to the dominant issues of the twenty-first century.

Goodman, Jessica. The Strange Case of Carlo Goldoni. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780198796626.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter studies how Goldoni created himself as an author and glorious ‘phénomène’, and reinforced this image through his personal and autobiographical writings. It locates the inception of his authorial persona in his early work in Italy, and explores the pragmatic realities behind his heroic narrative of a theatrical vocation, before applying a similarly pragmatic approach to readings of his 1762 invitation to Paris. It suggests that Goldoni’s experience at the Comédie-Italienne, and subsequent dismissals of it by the author himself and modern critics, are most productively understood by considering this two-year period within the context of the parallel real and recounted careers he had been constructing, and by examining the relationship between Goldoni’s self-fashioning and the expectations and reactions of those around him.
