Abstract Communication satellites have come a long way since the 240 voice circuits and omnidirectional antennae of Intelsat I, (Early Bird’). Intelsat VI will have 120,000 two-way voice channels and at least three TV transponders. And yet, despite establishing their worth in the field of international telephony and trunk TV distribution, satellite services have still to reach their full potential. Until now mainly in the hands of government PTO funded bodies, satellite communications are only slowly breaking out of this strait-jacket.
