Abstract:
Solid-state reactions were used to synthesize pure and doped barium titanate powder. Barium titanate formation with tetragonal perovskite structure was detected by X-ray diffraction and occurred at a temperature above 700°C for pure powder and 500°C for doped powder. However, quite crystalline samples were observed only at 800oC and 600°C for pure and doped barium titanate, respectively, what made the refinement of the synthesized powders possible. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction data was analyzed by using the Fullprof Rietveld refinement approach, Thompson-Cox-Hastings pseudo-Voigt with function. The refinement method was effective in the study of the temperature influence on the microstructure of the analysis of pure and doped barium titanate.

Abstract:
Cubic phase gadolinium oxide nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal method at various reaction temperatures like 60 °C, 120 °C, 180 °C and 240 °C. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) studies confirmed the formation of cubic phase Gd2O3. The broadening of XRD peak, due to crystallite size was investigated with the aid of gaussian and voigt peak fitting function and its comparisons were also performed. Crystallite size calculated from Scherrer formula for Gd2O3 nanoparticles for various reactions temperatures varies between 21 nm and 39 nm. Thermal analysis of as-prepared sample was done and the decomposition temperature was found to be 433 °C for the formation of Gd2O3. The metal-oxygen band in Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra confirmed the presence of Gd2O3. Band gap studies from Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS) revealed the decrease in band gap with respect to the increase in crystallite size. In Photoluminescence (PL) spectra, a broad ultra violet emission is observed between 320 nm and 400 nm. Irrespective of reaction temperature, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images reported the formation of nanorods.

Abstract:
Active and Passive damping of Euler-Bernoulli beams and their interactions have been studied using the beam’s exact transfer function model without mode truncation or finite element or finite difference approximation. The combination of viscous and Voigt damping is shown to map the open-loop poles and zeros from the imaginary axis in the undamped case into a circle in the left half plane and into the negative real axis. While active PD collocated control using sky-hooked actuators is known to stabilize the beam, it is shown that the derivative action using proof-mass (reaction-mass) actuators can destabilize the beam.

Abstract:
Laminated plates are loading-bearing components that are generally connected to flexible pads and exhibit complicated mechanical responses. To investigate the geometrically nonlinear transient responses of a laminated plate with flexible pad supports, a varied constraint reaction model and a systematic numerical procedure are presented in this paper. The flexible pad supports of the plate were treated as viscoelastic boundary conditions, wherein the strip-type pad per unit length was modeled as a cantilever beam. The nonlinear Kelvin–Voigt model was developed to simulate the nonlinear viscoelastic behaviors of the flexible pads. The dynamically varied constraint reactions generated by the viscoelastic supports, which depend upon the displacement and velocity of the nodes along the plate edge, were determined by the deflection and slope equations of the beam theory used, and they were applied on the plate edges by using the nonlinear load functions. Thus, the dynamical responses of the laminated plate with viscoelastic supports were obtained. Numerical results show that the present method can effectively treat the geometrically nonlinear transient response of the laminated plate with viscoelastic supports, and it is essential to consider the effects of non-ideal boundary conditions in the nonlinear transient analysis.

Abstract:
The medical and bio-engineering fields have been increasingly using information and communication technology. To introduce robots into surgical procedures, data on surgical operations are required. Several studies have tried the creation of data on living tissues for mechanical actions, which makes determining the mechanical characteristics of living tissues vital, but few have been commonly used. Therefore, we previously developed a sensing system that uses a hydraulic-driven micro mechanism to measure the force applied to an object when it is touched. Micro force sensors are necessary for various manipulations requiring careful operation. Unfortunately, the measurement accuracy of sensors tends to reduce with the reduction in sensor size. The proportional output in conventional force sensors, such as piezoelectric sensors, also decreases when the size of the sensor is reduced. However, a micro force sensor using a hydraulic-driven micro mechanism can obtain a large output even when it is small. Our system uses Pascal’s principle to measure small forces acting on the end effector. We propose methods for identifying the mechanical characteristics of certain viscoelastic materials similar to those used in a living organ. A hydraulic-driven micro device pushes an object and measures the reaction force and its displacement. We have used two types of micro devices, micro cylinder and micro bellows. Its stiffness and viscosity coefficient are obtained through calculations using Kelvin-Voigt and Zenner models. Discrete displacement and load data are applied to the estimated model, and the mechanical characteristics of the materials are identified as a minimized value between the estimated value and experimental one. We conducted experiments using the proposed identification methods on viscoelastic materials, and the results indicate that the value provided from the Kelvin-Voigt model was near the truth value.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this study is to identify the nonlinear dynamics of the double torsion pendulum with planar friction and elastic barriers. The original experimental stand consists of a disk-shaped body that rotates freely on top of a forced column with a system of barriers limiting the torsional vibrations of the pendulum bodies that create an nonuniform planar rotational friction contact. Two beam springs form soft barriers modeled by Voigt elements that limit the angular displacement of one of the pendulum bodies—the disk, while the second limiting system, made of a much more rigid barrier, limits the movement of the pendulum’s second body. The dynamic behavior of the asymmetrical system of two degrees of freedom with discontinuities is identified with the use of the described strategy, numerical solutions of the derived mathematical model and the Nelder–Mead simplex algorithm. The actual measurement series and numerical solutions show a good similarity of the dynamical reaction of the mechanical system and its virtual analog.

Abstract:
Lime-induced Fe chlorosis is often a severe problem on calcareous and saline alkali soils. Symptoms of apparent Fe deficiency and responses to its application on several field crops have been observed under such soil conditions (Indian Council of Agricultural Research, 1980–81; Sakal, Singh & Singh, 1982, 1983). Rice varieties exhibit variable reaction to Fe stress when cultivated as an upland crop especially at seedling stage in the nursery (Patel, Ramakrishanyya & Patel, 1977; Singh et al. 1984). Plant analysis is one of the accepted tools for diagnosing nutritional disorders. Chlorotic plants often contain more total Fe than the green plants (Katyal & Sharma, 1.980; Voigt et al. 1982). In order to overcome this elusive behaviour of Fe it has been suggested that in place of total Fe the plants should be analysed for active Fe or dilute HCl-extractable Fe (Machold & Stephen, 1969). Iron is important for chlorophyll biosynthesis and is linked with a number of enzyme systems. The change in the activities of the enzymes has beenused as a yardstick to distinguish Fe deficiency in plants (Del Rio et al. 1978). Wallace (cf. Katyal & Sharma, 1980) and Patel et al. (1977) suggested analysing the plants for that fraction of Fe which correlates well with occurrence of chlorosis.

Abstract:
It is known that the Кelvin-Voigt model does not describe stress relaxation, which is observed along with elastic properties in many polymers and biomaterials. In this regard, the standard linear body model is used to describe the properties of these materials. Studies of its properties were mainly limited to the study of its reaction to an instantaneously applied load, as well as to the determination of the time and nature of stress relaxation. Аt the same time, the frequency properties of the standard linear body remained unexplored. In this regard, an analysis of its frequency properties was carried out, which made it possible to study its behavior under vibration exposure. Оn the basis of the equation of motion, the amplitude-frequency response (АFC) was constructed, and its peculiarity was revealed, which consists in the fact that an increase in the damping coefficient leads to a decrease in the maximum value of the АFC only to a certain value greater than one. А further increase in the damping coefficient leads to an increase in the maximum frequency response up to infinity at a frequency that should also be considered resonant. Thus, the frequency response of a standard linear body always has a maximum. The subsequent increase in the damping coefficient leads to the tendency of the maximum frequency response to zero at infinity.

Abstract:
A sociolinguist's first reaction to Lewis’ critique of Labov's thirty-five-year-old principle of error correction (PEC) would likely be defensive or dismissive. While never formulated as the full-fledged ‘theory of social change’ Lewis portrays it to be, the PEC has indeed offered a valuable ‘theoretical starting place for diverse social-change efforts’ (Lewis, this issue, p. 326) by (socio)linguists over the years, repeatedly allowing us to use our technical training to provide more accurate diagnoses of language-related social issues than nonlinguists could, and thereby paving the way for their successful (re)solution. An early example is the 1985 trial of Paul Prinzivalli (see Labov 1988), who was rightfully found not guilty of making telephone bomb threats against Pan Am Airlines on the basis of Labov's careful phonetic evidence that his speech did not match the caller's recorded Boston accent. A more recent example is that of Voigt et al. (2017), whose computational analysis of police body-camera footage from 981 stops of Black and White drivers in Oakland, CA revealed that officers showed significantly more verbal respect to White than to Black drivers. This research is now being used to improve police training and police-community interactions in Oakland. In both cases, we could argue that, as in medicine, without an accurate diagnosis, a successful solution would elude us. And we might add that community beneficiaries of the (socio)linguist's on-the-ground ‘error correction and knowledge dissemination’ (Lewis, this issue, p. 339) might value this more than the critical race theorist's lofty theorizing.

Abstract:
A dynamic model for a swimming scallop was developed which integrates the mechanical properties of the hinge ligaments, valve inertia, the external fluid-flow reaction, the fluid pressure in the mantle cavity and the muscle contraction. Kinematic data were recorded for a swimming Placopecten magellanicus from high-speed film analysis. Dynamic loading experiments were performed to provide the required mechanical properties of the hinge for the same species. The swimming dynamics and energetics based on data from a 0.065 m long Placopecten magellanicus at 10 °C were analyzed. The main conclusions are as follows. 1. The mean period of a clapping cycle during swimming is about 0.28 s, which can be roughly divided into three equal intervals: closing, gliding and opening. The maximum angular velocity and acceleration of the valve movements are about 182 degrees s-1 and 1370 degrees s-2, respectively. 2. The hysteresis loop of the hinge was found to be close to an ellipse. This may be represented as a simple Voigt body consisting of a spring and dashpot in parallel, with a rotational stiffness of 0.0497 N m and viscosity coefficient of 0.00109 kg m2 s-1 for the 0.065 m long Placopecten magellanicus. 3. The external fluid reaction has three components, of which the added mass is about 10 times higher than the mass of a single valve, and the flow-induced pseudo-viscosity compensates for nearly half of the hinge viscosity for the 0.065 m long Placopecten magellanicus. 4. The locomotor system powered by the muscle can be divided into two subsystems: a pressure pump for jet production and a shell-hinge/outer-fluid oscillator which drives the pumping cycle. The dynamics of the oscillator is determined predominantly by the interaction of the external fluid reaction and the hinge properties, and its resonant frequency was found to be close to the swimming frequencies. 5. The momentum and energy required to run the oscillator are negligibly small (about 1 % for the 0.065 m long Placopecten magellanicus) compared with that for the jet. Almost all the mechanical energy from muscle contraction is used to perform hydrodynamic work for jet production. Thus, the Froude efficiency of propulsion in scallops is nearly the same as the entire mechanical efficiency of the locomotor system. This could be a fundamental advantage of jet propulsion, at least for a scallop. 6. The estimated maximum muscle stress is about 1.06x10(5) N m-2, the cyclic work is 0.065 J and power output is 1.3 W. Using an estimate of the mass of an adductor muscle, the work done by the muscle per unit mass is 9.0 J kg-1 and the peak power per unit mass is 185 W kg-1. 7. The time course of the force generation of the contracting adductor muscle is basically the same as that of the hydrodynamic propulsive force.

Abstract:
Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome(VKH) is a multisystemic disorder characterized by granulomatous panuveitis and cutaneous, otorhynolaryngologic and neurologic involvement, due to an autoimmune reaction against melanocytic antigens. Autoinflammatory associations of VKH, including inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis, were rarely described. SAPHO syndrome (an acronym for synovitis, acne, hyperostosis, pustulosis and osteitis) is a rare autoinflammatorymusculo-scheletal disease. This paper reports on a male patient presenting for long-lasting bone and joint pain, dysphagia, having a ten-year history of bilateral optic neuritiswhich required high-dose corticosteroids. Fundoscopy revealed diffuse chorioretinalnonpigmented atrophic lesions. Vitiligo, acne scars, clavicular deformity, recurrent chest pain and sacroiliitis pointed to a long-standing SAPHO syndrome and late-phase VKH. Blood tests found inflammation and anti-hepatitis C antibodies with repeatedly undetectable viremia. Bone scintigraphy with the characteristic bulls head upper chest uptake and the radiographs confirmed SAPHO syndrome. The patient was treated with sulphasalazine and cyclosporin A, with alleviation of the articular and bony disease. In conclusion, SAPHO syndrome may add to the list of the diseases associated with VKH. Although VKH and SAPHO syndrome may have appeared coincidentally, a common pathogenesis involving an infectious trigger and IL-17 could be considered.

Abstract:
The spatially-resolved electron temperature, rotational temperature, and number density of the two metastable Ar 1 s levels were investigated in a miniature RF Ar glow discharge jet at atmospheric pressure. The 1 s level population densities were determined from optical absorption spectroscopy (OAS) measurements assuming a Voigt profile for the plasma emission and a Gaussian profile for the lamp emission. As for the electron temperature, it was deduced from the comparison of the measured Ar 2 p i → 1 s j emission lines with those simulated using a collisional-radiative model. The Ar 1 s level population higher than 10 18 m − 3 and electron temperature around 2.5 eV were obtained close to the nozzle exit. In addition, both values decreased steadily along the discharge axis. Rotational temperatures determined from OH(A) and N 2 (C) optical emission featured a large difference with the gas temperature found from a thermocouple; a feature ascribed to the population of emitting OH and N 2 states by energy transfer reactions involving the Ar 1 s levels.

We present 2 cases of severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) during the tapering of corticosteroids, following several courses of high-dose pulse therapy for Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease. Their general symptoms and mucous membrane lesions, including those of the eye, were milder than those usually seen in Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis. Based on their initial presentation, these cases were not initially identified as SCARs, but continued to progress over the course of a few days. The mechanism underlying the paradoxical response to steroid administration seen in these patients can be interpreted as immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome in human immunodeficiency virus-negative patients.

Abstract:
Background: Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada's disease (VKHD) is an autoimmune disorder that targets melanocyte-rich tissues in genetically susceptible individuals. It can affect the eyes, inner ears, skin, hair, and meninges. When VKHD affects the eye, it can cause bilateral granulomatous panuveitis with exudative bullous retinal detachment and is usually associated with meningismus. It may lead to permanent loss of visual acuity. While the pathogenesis remains unknown, viral infection has been implicated. The most accepted theory remains a T-cell mediated autoimmune reaction against one or more antigens associated with melanocytes, melanin, and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Case presentation: We report the case of a 17-year-old male patient presenting to our outpatient department for vision loss. The patient reported a 2-week history of hearing loss, tinnitus, and episodic headaches associated with vomiting. Physical examination showed white lashes (poliosis) and a bilateral decrease in visual acuity. Fluorescein angiography showed bullous exudative retinal detachments. The patient was diagnosed with VKHD. His symptoms resolved following a course of oral prednisolone that was initiated at 60 mg per day (1mg/Kg/day), then tapered down over 6 weeks. Six months later, the patient presented again with more pronounced symptoms. His Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) was lower than it was on his first presentation, and the retinal exam showed a sunset glow fundus and degenerative changes in the RPE. Combined therapy with prednisolone and methotrexate resulted in a complete resolution of symptoms, and his BCVA returned to more than 20/40. Conclusion: This case emphasizes the importance of avoiding the rapid tapering of corticosteroids in VKHD due to the high risk of disease recurrence.

Introduction: Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) is an autoimmune disorder affecting melanocyte-containing tissues. Major histocompatibility complex, class II, DR beta1 (HLA-DRB1)*04 and its suballele HLA-DRB1*0405 were found to be associated with VKH in many studies.Purpose: To determine the association of HLA-DRB1*04 and its suballele HLADRB1*0405 with VKH patients of Malay descent.Materials and methods: A case control study was conducted among VKH patients of Malay ethnicity attending Ophthalmology Clinic, Hospital Selayang, Malaysia from December 2016 to December 2017. HLA-DRB1*04 allele-specific typing was performed on 14 Malay patients with VKH and 14 healthy controls using the polymerase chain reaction sequence-specific primer method. The data was then analysed using Fisher’s Exact test. Results: The frequency of HLA-DRB1*04 was noted to be higher in patients (42.9%) compared to controls (14.3%), but was not statistically significant (p = 0.209). The frequency of suballele HLA-DRB1*0405 was also increased in patients (42.9%) vscontrols (7.1%); however, the results were not significant (p = 0.077).Conclusion: In conclusion, although the findings were not statistically significant, the increased frequency of both HLA-DRB1*04 and its suballele HLA-DRB1*0405 may suggest a possible cause for the development of VKH among Malay patients.

Abstract:
The bumblebee (Bombus lantschouensis Vogt) is an important pollinator of wild plants. Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase (SMPD) is a hydrolase that plays a major role in sphingolipid metabolism reactions. We report the preparation and characterization of a polyclonal antibody for bumblebee SMPD. We then use the polyclonal antiserum to detect the SMPD protein at different development stages and in different tissues. Our results showed that a 1228bp fragment homologous with the B. terrestris SMPD gene was successfully amplified. The molecular weight of the fusion protein was about 70 kDa by SDS-PAGE. An effective polyclonal antibody against SMPD was also obtained from mice and found to have a higher specificity for bumblebee SMPD. Western blotting detection showed that SMPD was expressed at a high level in queen ovaries, although expression was lower in the midgut and venom gland. SMPD expression decreased from the egg stage until the pdd stage. We interpret our results as showing that the development of an effective polyclonal antiserum for the SMPD protein of a bumblebee, which provides a tool for exploring the function of the SMPD gene. In addition, the work has confirmed that SMPD should be considered as an important enzyme during bumblebee egg and larval stages.

Abstract:
In our approach we have combined knowledge of Old Masters (working in this field before the year 1905), New Masters (working in this field after the year 1905) and Dissidents under the guidance of Louis de Broglie and David Bohm. In our model the photon is represented as the Huygens-de Broglie’s particle on the helical path (full wave) guided by the Newton-Bohm entangled evolute (empty wave). We have formulated the concept of the Super-Elastic Photon WAVE based on the Great Works of Weber, Abbe, Voigt and Einstein. This model works with the longitudinal elasticity of that WAVE that was already very well tested experimentally. Newly, we propose to test the elastic amplitude of this WAVE for the case of the Doppler’s redshift, the Doppler’s blueshift, and the Zwicky’s redshift. We have newly used the concept of the Lorentz’ force for the description of the photon acting force and the fermion reacting force. In this model the Lorentz’ factors γ and γ3 do not describe the “transverse mass of fermions” and longitudinal mass of fermions” but the “reacting transverse force of fermions” and the “reacting longitudinal force of fermions”. (The mass of photons and fermions does not change with their speed). It is very well-known that the cylindrical helix observed from different angles forms shadows in the Plato’s Cave as circle, sine, cosine, trochoid, cochleoid, hyperbolic spiral. Therefore, the resulting shape depends on the observer position in the Plato’s Cave-this is the famous Rashomon effect between observers. Based on the Newton-Bohm helical evolute and the Huygens-de Broglie helical path of the particle we have derived interesting formula known as the quantum of the magnetic flux. When we work further with this concept based on the Mathematical Beauty developed by Dirac, Gell-Mann, Schwinger, Polchinski, Witten and many others, we will obtain possible properties of the magnetic monopole. This photon quantum of the magnetic flux can be experimentally evaluated in the known tests with superconductors and micro-WAVES and infrared-WAVES. Can it be that Nature cleverly works with the magnetic monopole hidden in plain sight? We want to pass this concept into the hands of Readers of this Journal better educated in the Mathematics and Physics.

Abstract The Up-and-Coming-Scientist section of the current issue of the Journal of Membrane Biology features the invited essay by Dr. Mercedes Alfonso-Prieto, Assistant Professor at the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), Germany, and the Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf, Vogt Institute for Brain Research. Dr. Alfonso-Prieto completed her doctoral degree in chemistry at the Barcelona Science Park, Spain, in 2009, pursued post-doctoral research in computational molecular sciences at Temple University, USA, and then, as a Marie Curie post-doctoral fellow at the University of Barcelona, worked on computations of enzyme reactions and modeling of photoswitchable ligands targeting neuronal receptors. In 2016, she joined the Institute for Advanced Science and the Institute for Computational Biomedicine at the FZJ, where she pursues research on modeling and simulation of chemical senses. The invited essay by Dr. Alfonso-Prieto discusses state-of-the-art modeling of molecular receptors involved in chemical sensing – the senses of taste and smell. These receptors, and computational methods to study them, are the focus of Dr. Alfonso-Prieto’s research. Recently, Dr. Alfonso-Prieto and colleagues have presented a new methodology to predict ligand binding poses for GPCRs, and extensive computations that deciphered the ligand selectivity determinants of bitter taste receptors. These developments inform our current understanding of how taste occurs at the molecular level. Graphic Abstract

Abstract:
Traditional views of inflectional changes often run as follows: A morphological opposition expressed by affixes is disturbed by sound changes. It is then left to morphology to ‘clean up the mess’; morphology is merely reactive. If, however, morphology can operate “by itself” (Aronoff 1994, Carstairs-McCarthy 1994, 2001, 2010, Maiden 2004, 2005), one would not expect this classical scenario to be the entire truth. The present paper pursues the hypothesis that there are morphological changes that are not merely reactive, but rather have a morphological motivation. This hypothesis is argued on the basis of well-known reduction processes in Scandinavian case and gender. Both are traditionally taken to represent the classical scenario, but in both, morphology ultimately plays a more prominent role. I argue that neither phonological erosion nor language contact can totally explain Scandinavian case loss and gender reduction. This supports an autonomous role for morphology.

Abstract:
Existing analytical models for railway tracks consider only one rail supported by a continuous foundation or periodic concentrated supports (called the periodically supported beam). This paper presents an analytical model for a railway track which includes two rails connected by sleepers. By considering the sleepers as Euler–Bernoulli beams resting on a Kelvin–Voigt foundation, we can obtain a dynamic equation for a sleeper subjected to the reaction forces of the rails. Then, by using the relation between the rail forces and displacements from the periodically supported beam model, we can calculate the sleeper responses with the help of Green's function. The numerical applications show that the sleeper is in flexion where the displacement at the middle of the sleeper is greater than those at the rail seats. Moreover, the deformed shape of the sleeper is nonsymmetric when the loads on the two rails are different. The model result agrees well with measurements performed using instrumented sleeper in situ

Abstract:
We report a case of ocular drug toxicity consistent with bilateral Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) like disease in a patient with cutaneous melanoma treated with Dabrafenib/Trametinib therapy. A 53-year-old man with a history of metastatic cutaneous melanoma, treated with Dabrafenib/Trametinib, developed a severe acute panuveitis with granulomatous anterior uveitis and multiple serous retinal detachments. The ocular inflammatory reaction was classified as a bilateral Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease. Intraocular inflammation resolved after discontinuation of chemotherapeutic agents and aggressive topical and systemic corticosteroid therapy. The present case outlines the importance of recognizing VKH-like syndrome as a possible consequence of therapy with dabrafenib and trametinib.

Abstract:
miRNAs, one of the members of the noncoding RNA family, are regulators of gene expression in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Changes in miRNA pool expression have been associated with differentiation of CD4+ T cells toward an inflammatory phenotype and with loss of self-tolerance in autoimmune diseases. Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada (VKH) disease is a chronic multisystemic pathology, affecting the uvea, inner ear, central nervous system, and skin. Several lines of evidence support an autoimmune etiology for VKH, with loss of tolerance against retinal pigmented epithelium-related self-antigens. This deleterious reaction is characterized by exacerbated inflammation, due to an aberrant TH1 and TH17 polarization and secretion of their proinflammatory hallmark cytokines interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-17, interferon γ, and tumor necrosis factor α, and an impaired CD4+ CD25high FoxP3+ regulatory T cell function. To restrain inflammation, VKH is pharmacologically treated with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs as first and second line of therapy, respectively. Changes in the expression of miRNAs related to immunoregulatory pathways have been associated with VKH development, whereas some genetic variants of miRNAs have been found to be risk modifiers of VKH. Furthermore, the drugs commonly used in VKH treatment have great influence on miRNA expression, including those miRNAs associated to VKH disease. This relationship between response to therapy and miRNA regulation suggests that these small noncoding molecules might be therapeutic targets for the development of more effective and specific pharmacological therapy for VKH. In this review, we discuss the latest evidence regarding regulation and alteration of miRNA associated with VKH disease and its treatment.

We experienced a 6-year-old case of drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DiHS)/drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) with subsequent development autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), type 1 diabetes with antithyroglobulin, thyroid peroxidase, insulinoma-associated antigen and anti-insulin antibodies at 4 months, alopecia at 7 months, vitiligo, uveitis due to Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease at 8 months after clinical resolution of the DiHS/DRESS. He was diagnosed as type III polyglandular autoimmune syndrome (PASIII) after DiHS/DRESS. Prompted by this case, we sought to determine which triggering factors were responsible for later development of PASIII in previously published cases with autoimmune sequelae. In the literature review, five patients with DIHS/DRESS were found to develop autoimmune sequelae consistent with PASIII. All cases with PASIII were much younger than those without them. Four out of the five patients were treated with intravenous immunoglobulin or pulsed prednisolone in the acute stage, although effective in short-term outcomes.

Abstract:
The contributions of the individual process steps of the cathode resistance were determined experimentally, directly from impedance spectra obtained from symmetrical cells. The symmetrical cells have architecture/structure consisting of YSZ electrolyte and a double layer cathode LSM-LSM/YSZ. The investigations were carried out in the temperature interval from 650 to 900 °C. The cathode processes steps activation energies obtained were 1.16 eV, 1.1 eV, and 0.09 eV (diffusion), respectively, which is in relatively good agreement with literature values. To understand the role of layer cathode thickness on electrochemical performance, electrical impedance spectra from symmetric LSM/YSZ/LSM cells were deconvoluted to obtain the key electrochemical components of electrode performance, namely ohmic resistance (RΩ), two low frequency processes related with chemical adsorption and dissociative reaction of O2 (Rp1 and Rp2), and bulk gas diffusion (W, finite warburg) through the electrode pores. The model used has Voight structure with three times constant. These parameters were then related to features, such as contact layer thickness, function layer thickness, and temperature. It was found that polarization resistance is highly dependent on the thickness of the contact layer (Rp1 and Rp2). All deconvoluted parameters are validated by using the appropriate physicochemical model.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The common presence of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DRB1*04 in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is well known. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between visual prognosis and HLA-DRB1*04 alleles during systemic corticosteroid therapy in patients with VKH disease. Methods This retrospective case series included 57 eyes from 29 consecutive patients with treatment-naïve VKH disease who received systemic corticosteroid therapy. Visual acuity, sex, refractive error, central retinal thickness (CRT), central choroidal thickness (CCT), and duration from onset to treatment were measured at initial and final visits. Mean values of parameters were compared with each visit. Genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction amplification with sequence-specific primer. Results Linear regression showed significant differences in logMAR best-corrected visual acuity between the three groups of homozygotes, heterozygotes, and normal subjects at baseline (p < 0.01), at 3 months after treatment (p < 0.01). There was no significant differences at 6 months after treatment (p = 0.257). No significant differences were detected between the three groups in age, sex, refractive error, CRT, CCT, or duration from onset to treatment. Conclusion Alleles of HLA-DRB1*04 might affect visual prognosis and be related to early response after initiation of treatment in VKH disease.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe marine unicellular cyanobacteriumProchlorococcusis an abundant primary producer and widespread inhabitant of the photic layer in tropical and subtropical marine ecosystems, where the inorganic nutrients required for growth are limiting. In this study, we demonstrate thatProchlorococcushigh-light strain MIT9301, an isolate from the phosphate-depleted subtropical North Atlantic Ocean, can oxidize methylphosphonate (MPn) and hydroxymethylphosphonate (HMPn), two phosphonate compounds present in marine dissolved organic matter, to obtain phosphorus. The oxidation of these phosphonates releases the methyl group as formate, which is both excreted and assimilated into purines in RNA and DNA. Genes encoding the predicted phosphonate oxidative pathway of MIT9301 were predominantly present inProchlorococcusgenomes from parts of the North Atlantic Ocean where phosphate availability is typically low, suggesting that phosphonate oxidation is an ecosystem-specific adaptation of someProchlorococcuspopulations to cope with phosphate scarcity.IMPORTANCEUntil recently, MPn was only known to be degraded in the environment by the bacterial carbon-phosphorus (CP) lyase pathway, a reaction that releases the greenhouse gas methane. The identification of a formate-yielding MPn oxidative pathway in the marine planctomyceteGimesia maris(S. R. Gama, M. Vogt, T. Kalina, K. Hupp, et al., ACS Chem Biol 14:735–741, 2019,https://doi.org/10.1021/acschembio.9b00024) and the presence of this pathway inProchlorococcusindicate that this compound can follow an alternative fate in the environment while providing a valuable source of P to organisms. In the ocean, where MPn is a major component of dissolved organic matter, the oxidation of MPn to formate byProchlorococcusmay direct the flow of this one-carbon compound to carbon dioxide or assimilation into biomass, thus limiting the production of methane.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose To provide a comprehensive review of rituximab use for the treatment of non-infectious uveitis and scleritis. Methods Review of literature through December 2020. Results Individual data was available for 229 patients with refractory non-infectious uveitis (n = 108) or scleritis (n = 121) who received treatment with rituximab (RTX). Rituximab was generally utilized as third-line or later treatment (uveitis: 67/90, 74.4%; scleritis: 90/96, 93.8%) at a mean of 33.5 months following the diagnosis of uveitis (range = 0 to 168.0 months; median = 24.0 months) and 39.4 months after diagnosis of scleritis (range = 1.0 to 168.0 months; median = 21.0 months). Patients with non-infectious uveitis and scleritis either received prior treatment with corticosteroids only (uveitis: 18/90, 20%; scleritis: 4/94, 4.3%), or with one (uveitis: 19/90, 21.1%; scleritis: 30/94, 31.9%), two (uveitis: 11/90, 12.2%; scleritis 27/94, 28.7%), or three or more (uveitis: 37/90, 41.1%; scleritis: 31/94, 33.0%) corticosteroid-sparing immunosuppressive agents with or without corticosteroids before initiation of RTX treatment. The rheumatologic protocol (two infusions of 1 gram of RTX separated by 14 days) was utilized most frequently (uveitis: 45/87, 51.7%; scleritis: 87/114, 76.3%), followed by the Foster protocol (eight weekly infusions of 375 mg/m2 RTX; uveitis: 18/87, 20.7%; scleritis: 10/114, 8.8%), and the oncologic protocol (four weekly infusions of 375 mg/m2 RTX; uveitis: 5/87, 5.7%; scleritis: 6/114, 5.3%). Various other off-label regimens were used infrequently (uveitis: 19/87, 21.8%; scleritis 11/114, 9.6%). Rituximab treatments resulted in a positive therapeutic response for the majority of patients with non-infectious uveitis (81/97, 83.5%). Commonly treated uveitic diagnoses included non-paraneoplastic autoimmune retinopathy (30/107, 28.0%), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (21/107, 19.6%), Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (12/107, 11.2%), and Behçet disease (11/107, 10.3%). Cases of non-infectious scleritis were most commonly attributed to granulomatosis with polyangiitis (75/121, 62.0%) and rheumatoid arthritis (15/121, 12.4%), and showed an even greater rate of positive therapeutic response (112/120, 93.3%) following RTX treatment. No side effects were reported in 76.3% (74/97) of uveitis and 85.5% (71/83) scleritis cases. Of those cases associated with RTX-induced adverse events, the most common were infusion reactions of various severity (11/35, 31.4%). Conclusions Overall, RTX appeared to be both effective and well-tolerated as second or third-line therapy for patients with non-infectious uveitis and scleritis.
