Egerquist, Eva. "Ordovician (Billingen and Volkhov stages) Brachiopod Faunas of the East Baltic." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala University, Palaeontology group, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-4303.

Abstract:

Lower-Middle Ordovician (Arenig) successions in the East Baltic have been investigated for more than one hundred and fifty years. Nevertheless detailed sampling still yields new species and better knowledge of the environment in which these organisms lived. The successions are well suited for bed by bed sampling because of the lack of tectonic disturbance and because the sequences are well documented.

This study analyses collections of Billingen-Volkhov age mainly from the St. Petersburg region, but also from Estonia. A great deal of the material was obtained from the marly to clayey, soft sediment that intercalates the compact packstones and wackestones in the succession. Twenty-nine of these clay horizons were used for diversity estimates on the fauna through the succession. The most thoroughly investigated groups for this investigation were rhynchonelliformean brachiopods, conodonts and ostracodes. The results indicate that variances in diversity and abundance levels for these groups were not correlated, either to each other or to the small-scale sea level fluctuations that have been suggested for the region. However, diversity dynamics of brachiopods and ostracodes confirm the large-scale upward shallowing of the basin into the Upper Volkhov. Comparison with fossils from the limestones did not reveal any differences in faunal composition between the two preservation modes.

The detailed sampling, coupled with sampling of the recently described mud mounds that occur in several outcrops, yielded large numbers of specimens. This enabled revision of earlier poorly known rhynchonelliformean genera such as Ujukella Andreev, as well as better known genera such as Porambonites Pander. In total the examined faunas include 31 genera assigned to 53 species of rhynchonelliformean brachiopods. Of these Leoniorthis and Eoporambonites are defined as new genera, and the following new species are described: Neumania paucicostata, Ranorthis rotunda, Orthidium gambolovensis, Orthidium lavensis, Skenidioides minutus, Tetralobula peregrina, Idiostrophia prima and Idiostrophia tenuicostata.

Gerald, Ginther. "Revisionism in the music history of Dmitry Shostakovich: the Shostakovich Wars." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/5342.

Full text
Abstract:
The revisionist view of the Soviet Union’s most eminent composer, Shostakovich has been dominant in the American and British press ever since the publication of ex-Soviet journalist Solomon Volkov’s Testimony: The Memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich as related and edited by Solomon Volkov in 1979. This pre-glasnost book proved to be the opportunity for music journalists to polish up their image of Shostakovich as a closet dissident who had been secretly laughing up his sleeve at the Soviet regime since 1932. This thesis suggests that Solomon Volkov faked the writing of Testimony and claiming that the book was the ‘memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich’ was dubious at best. A favourite theme of revisionist writers is the perceived relationship between Shostakovich and Stalin. This thesis reveals that there was little interaction between the two despite the wild fantasies of revisionist writers and film makers. The infamous anonymous 1936 Pravda editorial ‘Muddle Instead of Music’ has been the subject of speculation ever since it was written. In the appendix of this thesis is a translation of ‘Mysteries of Lady Macbeth’ a chapter of Leonid Maksimenkov’s Muddle Instead of Music: Stalin’s Cultural Revolution 1936-1938. Archival evidence in this chapter reveals that the Pravda editorial was a product of internal Communist Party rivalry between the Cultural Education Board and the newly-formed Arts Committee. Stalin played no part in the writing of the editorial at all. This explodes many myths that have circulated since 1936 about ‘Muddle Instead of Music’. It seems that Shostakovich was a convenient target selected at random by the ambitious head of the Arts Committee – Platon Kerzhentsev.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to advance the understanding of strong-field QED processes in short laser pulses. The processes of non-linear one-photon and two-photon Compton scattering are studied, that is the scattering of photons in the interaction of relativistic electrons with ultra-short high-intensity laser pulses. These investigations are done in view of the present and next generation of ultra-high intensity optical lasers which are supposed to achieve unprecedented intensities of the order of 10^24 W/cm^2 and beyond, with pulse lengths in the order of some femtoseconds. The ultra-high laser intensity requires a non-perturbative description of the interaction of charged particles with the laser field to allow for multi-photon interactions, which is beyond the usual perturbative expansion of QED organized in powers of the fine structure constant. This is achieved in strong-field QED by employing the Furry picture and non-perturbative solutions of the Dirac equation in the presence of a background laser field as initial and final state wave functions, as well as the laser dressed Dirac-Volkov propagator. The primary objective is a realistic description of scattering processes with regard to the finite laser pulse duration beyond the common approximation of infinite plane waves, which is made necessary by the ultra-short pulse length of modern high-intensity lasers. Non-linear finite size effects are identified, which are a result of the interplay between the ultra-high intensity and the ultra-short pulse length. In particular, the frequency spectra and azimuthal photon emission spectra are studied emphasizing the differences between pulsed and infinite laser fields. The proper description of the finite temporal duration of the laser pulse leads to a regularization of unphysical infinities (due to the infinite plane-wave description) of the laser-dressed Dirac-Volkov propagator and in the second-order strong-field process of two-photon Compton scattering. An enhancement of the two-photon process is found in strong laser pulses as compared to the corresponding weak-field process in perturbative QED.

Abstract:

Thesis, Strasbourg, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020STRAE015.

Full text
Abstract:
The GBAR experiment aims at measuring the free fall of ultra-cold antihydrogens (neV).This implies the production of antihydrogen ions, which are obtained by two charge exchange reactions involving antiprotons and positronium atoms. The goal of this study is to analyse the possibility to increase the production rates of the antihydrogens and the antihydrogen ions produced, by assisting the two reactions with a laser. The cross sections are obtained in the antiproton energy range of the GBAR experiment (1 - 10 keV), by using a semi-perturbative approach proposed by Byron and Joachain. This method, simultaneously, allows the description of electron-atom interaction (Coulomb Born Approximation or Continuum Distorted Waves - Final State), the electron-laser interaction (Volkov states), and the laser-atom interactions (first order time dependent perturbation theory). The positronium excitation from the 1s state by one-photon virtual transition process is studied, by considering lasers whose wavelengths are around 243 nm (Lyman-αline). It is then proposed to adapt these laser sources in order to excitate 3s and 3d states (Paschen-β). The Doppler shifts resulting from the positronium cloud velocity distribution are taken into account as well, at the confinement energies of 25 meV and 48 meV. Finally, the number of antiparticules produced is estimated. Compared to the case of non-assisted collisions, the losses induced by the photo-ionization and photo-detachment processes are evaluated

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis “Deconstruction 3.0” is to show how the third wave of deconstruction in fashion is deconstructing the second [postmodern] French luxury fashion system. The deconstructionists of the post-Soviet collective – Demna and Guram Gvasalia, Gosha Rubchinskiy, and Lotta Volkova – question and deconstruct the established apparatus of the postmodern fashion system and its business model. With their business strategies and with help of demand by post-postmodern consumer culture proposed and predicted by Douglas B. Holt (2002), the post-Soviet collective constructs new business models and thus we are entering a post-postmodern fashion system. I have used a twofold methodology from the disciplines of business administration and humanities. In the literature review, I have aimed to close gaps between different scholars and made a concluding section of the postmodern fashion system and its business model, a synthesis that lies in parallel with Peter Drucker’s (1957) thoughts on postmodern organisational theory. Through the empirics and analysis with help of Jacques Derrida’s (1972) concept of deconstruction, I propose, in the end, a dialectic model between the established postmodern apparatus and the new and diametrically opposed post-postmodern apparatus operated by the post-Soviet collective.

We use the eikonal-Volkov approximation (EVA) to describe atomic strong-field ionization. The basic methods are based on S-matrix and appriximate the continuum state as the Coulamb-eikonal-Volkov state. The main component of this approach is the approximate solution for the continuum states of electrons in the presence of a long-range ionic potential and a strong laser field. These solutions include the external field, and the Columb potential in the eikonal approximation, and describe the Columb-laser coupling effect.
