Abstract:
A trend in studies about National Socialism and religion in recent years argues for a deliberate distinction between the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and the antisemitic völkisch movement of nineteenth-century Germany. This article challenges that contention. Several researchers have published comprehensive studies on the heterogeneous nature of Christian responses to the Nazis, but a comparable approach looking at how the Nazis viewed religion has not yet been undertaken. A study of the latter type is certainly necessary, given that one of the consistent features of the völkisch movement was its diversity. As Roger Griffin has argued, a “striking feature of the sub-culture . . . was just how prolific and variegated it was . . . [T]he only denominator common to all was the myth of national rebirth.” In short, the völkisch movement contained a colorful, varied, and often bewildering range of religious beliefs.

AbstractThis essay analyzes the tensions that the rise of “Nordic racism” associated with Hans F. K. Günther triggered within the völkisch movement in the 1920s. Using the examples of the “Deutschbund,” the völkisch wing of the German youth movement “Bündische Jugend” and the German Aristocrats' Association “Deutsche Adelsgenossenschaft,” this essay shows that the reception of the Nordic idea was partially based on misunderstandings and distortions but was also met with open disagreement.

Abstract:
Breaking the Law as a Norm: Contours of Ideological Radicalism within the Nazi Dictatorship. This article analyzes the relationship between Nazi legal experts’ efforts to create a canon of constitutional law for the Third Reich and the ideological radicalism characteristic of Hitler and the SS-state. The attempts of legal professionals to establish “völkisch” constitutional law emerged out of the staunch anti-liberalism that had spread throughout Germany since the end of World War I. However, this “völkisch” constitutional law bore no resemblance to rational European legal thought. It not only proved to be ineffective for this reason, but also because the ideological radicalism that reigned supreme in the Third Reich sought to break the law and let lawlessness rule.

Abstract:
Aside from equating it with Hitlerism, there have been few scholarly attempts to define national socialism and specify its relation to the broader category of fascism. This article posits that national socialisms are a sub-genus of fascism, where the distinguishing feature is an ultaranationalism based on a palingenetic völkisch racism, of which anti-Semitism is an essential element. Thus, national socialism is not just mimetic Hitlerism, as Hitler is not even necessary. National socialist movements may even conceivably be opposed to the goals and actions of Hitlerism. To test this definition, the case of Latvia’s Pērkonkrusts [Thunder Cross] movement is analysed. Based on an analysis of its ideology, Pērkonkrusts is a national socialist movement with a völkisch racialist worldview, while also being essentially anti-German. The case study even addresses the apparent paradox that Pērkonkrusts both collaborated in the Holocaust, and engaged in resistance against the German occupation regime.

Abstract:
The article examines the Holocaust in Northern Transylvania. It concentrates on the anti-Semitic traditions of the Hungarian community and the exclusion of Jews from their minority society. Moreover, the article seeks to highlight the connection between the Holocaust in Hungary and ethnic resettlement plans. The völkisch background of such plans reveals similarities with the German movements of populations that had been carried out shortly before.

Représentant au Reichstag du Deutschvölkische Freiheitspartei à partir de mai 1924 puis du NSDAP à parti de 1928, journaliste prolifique et rédacteur en chef du périodique « völkisch » Der Reichswart, le Comte Ernst de Reventlow (1869-1943) s'est illustré par son activisme au sein du mouvement « völkisch » puis par ses responsabilités au NSDAP.On oublie souvent de mentionner que cet intellectuel, ancien officier de marine, né dans une famille luthérienne de la vieille aristocratie du Schleswig-Holstein formule aussi une pensée religieuse originale.A partir de l'analyse des ouvrages religieux de Reventlow complétée par les articles du Reichswart (de 1920-1943) abordant un thème religieux, cette étude vise à démontrer la spécificité de la pensée religieuse de Reventlow ainsi que ses enjeux culturels et politiques à la fois dans le mouvement religieux « völkisch » et dans le cadre de l'Etat national-socialiste<br>As a Reichstag elected representative of the Deutschvölkische Freiheitspartei from May 1924 and then as a member of the NSDAP from 1928, as well as a prolific journalist and editor of the "völkisch" periodical publication Der Reichswart, Count Ernst zu Reventlow (1869 ? 1943) has distinguished himself through his activism within the "völkisch" movement and then through the responsibilities he had in NSDAP.It should be remembered that this intellectual and former naval officer, born to a Lutheran aristocratic family in Schleswig-Holstein, did put into words articulate original religious thoughts.Based on the analysis of Reventlow's religious works and the articles with a religious theme in Der Reichwart (1920-1943), this study aims at proving the specificity of his religious thoughts as well as their political and cultural implications in the "völkisch" religious movement, and particularly in the national socialist system

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to scrutinize how Sveriges Religiösa Reformförbund (Swedish Association of Religious Reform), a pro-Nazi Christian association in interwar Sweden, constructed the concept of race during the years 1929–1940. Using hermeneutic content analysis and a theoretical approach based on “biopolitics” and “political theology,” I examine the construction during three identified periods: 1929–1933, 1934–1937, 1938–1940. Liberal theological in orientation, the association applied a historical-critical exegesis based on late-nineteenth century German Kulturprotestantismus, seeing culture and religion as inseparable components. Also stressing the need for a “religious rebirth” of the Swedish nation, the association pursued a regenerative return to the religious-ethical characteristics of the country’s alleged heroic Germanic past. First using cultural and biological arguments separately in the construction of race, the association would due to its emerging pro-Nazi orientation become influenced by Nazi German theologians, hence incorporating elements of völkisch ideology.

Aux lendemains de la défaite allemande de 1918, Adolf Hitler, le caporal défait de la Première Guerre mondiale, psychiquement en guerre depuis de longues années, écoute attentivement ce qui, dans l'histoire du peuple allemand, sa langue et sa culture, maintient ses espoirs et ses craintes. Au XIXe siècle, le mythe 'völkisch' - l'idéologie du 'Volk' allemand- avait structuré l'identité des Allemands. La défaite allemande de 1918 sonnait la fin de ce mythe, laissant la jeune Allemagne auparavant si sûre de son destin exceptionnel, totalement humiliée. Dans cet 'Umwelt' déboussolée, Adolf Hitler, l'autodidacte de Braunau, aussitôt propulsé sur la scène politique bavaroise, glanait rancoeurs et inquiétudes sociales pour se constituer un discours. La langue qu'il était en train de fabriquer, bientôt fixée définitivement dans 'Mein Kampf', était une langue totalitaire et meurtrière. Totalitaire, en prétendant tout dire et répondre à toutes les inquiétudes d'une époque ; meurtrière par !'opérateur sémantique qui liait dans un même énoncé « Deutschland erwache » à sa haine antisémite «Juda verrecke ». Adolf Hitler fut l'homme d'une seule idée: une lutte mortelle entre Aryens et Juifs était engagée depuis des siècles. De l'issue de cette lutte dépendait le sort du peuple allemand. La victoire du peuple juif signerait l'anéantissement de la race aryenne et plus globalement du monde entier. Pour que le peuple allemand vive, il n'y avait d'autre solution que celle du 'Juda verrecke'. La langue qu'il avait fabriquée ne fut qu'un habillage de son délire paranoïaque, le moyen de propagande le plus puissant qui ait soutenu, pendant presque douze années, les illusions les plus mensongères.
