Abstract:
Nutrient pollution in Pagassitikos Gulf arises mainly from the disposal of Volos untreated domestic wastewater inside Volos Bay, and also the agricultural run-off from the surrounding the Gulf cultivated areas. Volos Bay's limited circulation provides the conditions for the Bay's eutrophication by the discharge of untreated wastewater. In July 1987 this surface discharge was replaced by a new deep outfall system. The latter was located outside Volos Bay discharging primary treated effluents offshore at a depth of 55 m. To monitor any ecological changes, pre-operational (1986-1987) and operational (1988-1989) oceanographic data have been compared. The results showed a decrease in nutrient and phytoplankton concentrations between pre-operational and operational periods. Furthermore, in the vicinity of the present discharge a significant increase in the abundance of benthic communities occurred, due presumably to the continuous supply of food, adequate water circulation and high dissolved oxygen levels.

Abstract:
A three-year study, designed to record the level of potentially toxic elements within the urban complex in the city of Volos, Greece, was carried out between 2018 and 2020. For the needs of the aforementioned study, 62 surface (0–15 cm) soil samples were collected each year (i.e., 186 samples in total) from an urban area of 3.65 km2, and the average value of pseudo-total metal concentration was measured. Soil pollution indices, such as the contamination factor (CF) and the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), were estimated regarding each of the metals of interest. The respective thematic maps were constructed, and the spatial variability of the contamination degree was displayed. Higher values of the CF and Igeo were obtained near the heavy traffic roads and beside the railway station, the bus stations, and the commercial port. The maps based on the pollution indices, along with the database that was constructed using the appropriate mathematical tools of geostatistical analysis, may be a useful tool for monitoring, prediction, and continuous verification of contamination in the urban soils of Volos city.

Abstract:
Pleistocene alkaline basaltic lavas crop out in the region of Volos at the localities of Microthives and Porphyrio. Results from detailed petrographic study show porphyritic textures with varying porosity between 15% and 23%. Data from deep and shallow water samples were analysed and belong to the Ca-Mg-Na-HCO3-Cl and the Ca-Mg-HCO3 hydrochemical types. Irrigation wells have provided groundwater temperatures reaching up to ~30 °C. Water samples obtained from depths ranging between 170 and 250 m. The enhanced temperature of the groundwater is provided by a recent-inactive magmatic heating source. Comparable temperatures are also recorded in adjacent regions in which basalts of similar composition and age crop out. Estimations based on our findings indicate that basaltic rocks from the region of Volos have the appropriate physicochemical properties for the implementation of a financially feasible CO2 capture and storage scenario. Their silica-undersaturated alkaline composition, the abundance of Ca-bearing minerals, low alteration grade, and high porosity provide significant advantages for CO2 mineral carbonation. Preliminary calculations suggest that potential pilot projects at the Microthives and Porphyrio basaltic formations can store 64,800 and 21,600 tons of CO2, respectively.

Abstract:
The holy shrine ofPanagia (Saint Maria) Goritsis is located in a cave on the outer limits of the city of Volos, on the coastline. The stability problems caused by the loosening of the rockmass and the expansion of the joints generated issues about the safety of the numerous worshippers visiting the church every day. The cave is located into the Middle Triassic - Upper Jurassic marbles of the Pelagonian zone. The fragmentation of the rockmass along the two faults intersecting the slope until the coastline, combined with the weathering action of waves led to the formation of the cave. Although the action of the waves was cut of by the construction of the narthex and the surrounding buildings, the stability problems of the cave are intensified by the dynamic loading of the roof. The ceiling of cave is located 1 to 3 metres under the national road and the railway line connecting Volos with Agia. The selection of the proper support measures was complicated. The limited space, the small depth and most of all the religious and the historical value of the cave led to the selection of light support measures combined with the imposition of restriction for the reduction of the dynamic and the static loading

Abstract:
Nowadays, as extreme weather increasingly threatens human health and economy, early warning system approaches are critical for timely preparedness and response. Towards the implementation of a multi-model forecasting system for flood hazards, this study presents a coupled application of three (3) models: The WRF-ARW weather model, the WRF-Hydro hydrological model, and the HEC-RAS 2D hydraulic model. A flash flood event that occurred on 9 October 2006 in Volos city, Greece, is used as a case study to assess the accuracy of the integrated modelling approach to simulate the flood hydrograph and flood extent in Xerias ungauged catchment. The hydrometeorological simulation results indicated a severe persistent storm over Pelion mountain at the northeast of Volos, as the main factor of the major flash flood and extensive impacts. Historical flood records retrieved by several conventional and non-conventional sources are used to validate the flooded area. Compared to the collected data and prior studies, the generated inundation map of Xerias river is found to realistically capture highly impacted areas which experienced infrastructure damage and human rescues from inundated roads and buildings. Results from our analyses show that the proposed physically-based modelling approach can give reliable inputs into flood risk management.

Abstract:
Introduction: Responding to the coronavirus pandemic, Greece implemented the largest quarantine in its history. No data exist regarding its impact on PM2.5 pollution. We aimed to assess PM2.5 levels before, during, and after lockdown (7 March 2020–16 May 2020) in Volos, one of Greece’s most polluted industrialized cities, and compare PM2.5 levels with those obtained during the same period last year. Meteorological conditions were examined as confounders. Methods: The study period was discriminated into three phases (pre-lockdown: 7 March–9 March, lockdown: 10 March–4 May, and post-lockdown period: 5 May–16 May). A wireless sensors network was used to collect PM2.5, temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and wind speed data every 2 s. Results: The lockdown resulted in a significant drop of PM2.5 by 37.4% in 2020, compared to 2019 levels. The mean daily concentrations of PM2.5 exceeded the WHO’s guideline value for 24-h mean levels of PM2.5 35% of the study period. During the strictest lockdown (23 March to 4 May), the mean daily PM2.5 levels exceeded the standard 41% of the time. The transition from the pre-lockdown period into lockdown or post-lockdown periods was associated with lower PM2.5 concentrations. Conclusions: A reduction in the mean daily PM2.5 concentration was found compared to 2019. Lockdown was not enough to avoid severe exceedances of air pollution in Volos.

Abstract:
The history of religions traditionally turns the saints into god's successors. Thus, to the pagan god Volos, the cattle's god and Perun, the thunder god, would, in Russia, succeed saint Blasius, the cattle's protector, and saint Elijah, the thunder patron. Recent Russian studies represent these two almost unknown gods as the avatars of heroes of an Indo-European myth, the one of the thunder god running after the snake. The analysis of those studies from comparative mythology makes us have doubts about their results: we think we know nothing about Volos. His function as cattle's god would itself originate from the first Christian scolars who would in this way project on the god the function at the saint. In the same way, the features attributed to Perun would be nothing else than those of saint Elijah: thus, the saints are not the god's successors, but it's the gods who become the saints's successors. An analysis of the cult of the saints from the folklore invites us to see in the use of their names a language aiming at humanizing nature. This study concludes itself by a present theological interpretation of the cult of the saints. The "witnesses" could act as the martyrs then the saints did at their time in Christianism

Abstract:

Abstract:

Background: The literature concerning M&A has thus far concentrated on the merging companies, and on what kind of effects an acquisition has on these companies. The effects on the involved companies´ (customers and) suppliers have largely been ignored in the M & A literature.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyse how the suppliers relationships to the aquired company are influenced by an acquisition and how the suppliers handle the following situation. Method: The paper has been carried out in the form of a case-study and we have interviewed some suppliers to the automotive industry.

Results: The full effect on the suppliers relationships to Volvo has not been seen yet, due to the fact that only two years has passed since the acquisition and that the current products have a lifecycle of 3-5 years. A number of changes have been discovered, but we don't consider theese tendencies to be results of the acquisition. However have their penetration strengthens through the acquisition.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the fastest growing areas in the manufacturing industry today is additive manufacturing with a large application area that is only getting bigger. Additive manufacturing is when material is added instead of removed in order to produce a part. In connection with the technology being developed, additive manufacturing has become more and more common in the industry where its applications can save companies a large amount of money. An area where additive manufacturing can be shown to be useful is in the production at Volvo GTO, Umeå which is Volvo's leading manufacturer of truck cabins. To investigate whether additive manufacturing can reduce the manufacturing cost, increase the quality of the product or reduce the delivery time at the factory, the investigator has researched what possible cases related to additive manufacturing there is by having meetings and discussions with employees at the factory and finding where the additive technology could be applied. Six cases were found that were investigated. The cases included, among other things, nozzles in the sealing line, vacuum forming templates for the carpentry department and paint distributors on painting robots. The cases were investigated by examining and testing to see which additive technology is best suited for that particular case. When all cases had been investigated thoroughly, an investment priority list was created to create a plan for how the factory should continue its investment in the additive technology. The order on the list is based on what the investigator thought was most important and feasible. The sequence became: FFF printer without locked material system, SLA printer and a MJF printer. It was also found that the factory can save 423 384 SEK a year already by utilizing other additive methods than the one already in place in the factory.

Fellnert, Markus.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Research shows that failures in the standardization process often result from communication and organizational issues between those involved in the committee and the user community. This is mainly caused by two issues: first, a lack of integration of available standards development tools with communication and social interfaces; and second, to the difficulties inherent in organizing and collating information in a semantically meaningful manner. To this effect, the authors present a Visual Ontological Language for Technical Standards (VOLTS). VOLTS is a prototype environment that seeks to address the latter problem introduced above. In VOLTS, standards developers visually create standards within a network of information. VOLTS builds upon a tool developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) called the NIST Ontological Visualization Interface for Standards (NOVIS), which presented a novel method for visualizing the content and connections of standards, but lacked the ability to allow users to alter that information. VOLTS focuses on providing users with a process that allows for verification and validation at all stages of development. To that effect, VOLTS incorporates research done by NIST on building a Framework for Analysis Comparison, and Test of Standards (FACTS). The examples presented herein use the openly available standards World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Ontology Language (OWL) 2 and the Data Mining Group’s (DMG) Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML) to demonstrate the VOLTS process and methodology. Future work discussed will seek to address the former problem introduced above.
