Some years ago in Brazil the power quality was related, basically, with interruption of supplied energy and certain special loads of industry. In recent years, however, under controls of the regulating agency ANEEL (Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica) and with specialists, the power quality area received the due attention and was legislated and acquired regulations. So, finally, the area of Power Quality was formally created and now it embraces several electrical phenomena and events. Because of the new regulations, this work presents a project of a power quality meter. One of meter s focuses is to be a low cost system and becomes able to be used in large scale. This power quality meter is an electronic system that processes the voltage signal of electrical network and extracts data related to power quality; the data are locally stored and after they are remotely accessed and transmitted to a data base to be analyzed.

Abstract:
At Marginalen Bank, there are several microservices containing endpoints that are covered bytest automation. The documentation of which microservices and endpoints that are covered byautomated tests is currently done manually and is proven to contain mistakes. In the documentation, the test coverage for all microservices together and for every individual microserviceis presented. Marginalen Bank needs a way to automate this process with a system that cantake care of test coverage documentation and present the calculated data. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to find a way to create a real-time auto-test monitoring system thatautomatically detects and monitors microservices, endpoints, and test automation to documentand present test automation coverage on a website. The system is required to daily detect andupdate the documentation to be accurate and regularly find eventual changes. The implemented system that detects and documents the test automation coverage is calledTest Autobahn. For the system to detect all microservices, a custom hosted service was implemented that registers microservices. All microservices with the custom hosted service installedand extended to registers to Test Autobahn when deployed on a server. For the system todetect all endpoints of each microservice, a custom middleware was implemented that exposesall endpoints of a microservice with it installed. For the microservices to be able to install theseand get registered, a NuGet package containing the custom hosted service and the custom middleware, was created. To detect test automations, custom attributes models were created thatare supposed to be inserted into each test automation project. The custom attributes are placedin every test class and method within a project, to mark which microservice and endpoint thatis being tested within every automated test. The attributes of a project can be read throughthe assembly. To read the custom attributes within every test automation project, a consoleapplication, called Test Autobahn Automation Detector (TAAD), was implemented. TAADreads the assembly to detect the test automations and sends them to Test Autobahn. Test Autobahn couples the found test automation to the corresponding microservices and endpoints.TAAD is installed and ran on the build pipeline in Azure DevOps for each test automationproject to register the test automations. To daily detect and update the documentation of the test coverage, Quartz.NET hosted serviceis used. With Quartz.NET implemented, Test Autobahn can execute a specified job on a schedule. Within the job, Test Autobahn detects microservices and endpoints and calculates the testautomation coverage for the detection. The calculation of the test coverage from the latestdetection is presented on the webpage, containing both the test coverage for all microservicestogether and the test coverage for each microservice. According to the evaluations, the systemseems to function as anticipated, and the documentation is displaying the expected data.

Abstract:
Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia cause cognitive disabilities in the afflicted person. As a result, the person with dementia often requires assistance from a primary caregiver. However, while the caregiver is away from the home they are unaware of the person's status and may not be able to find out without returning to the home due to dementia's effects on cognition. In this thesis work, a system of embedded devices is presented which tracks a solitary dementia patient in the home in real-time. The system is composed of three main hardware components. Multiple passive and active sensors are strategically placed to monitor the patient. A number of custom battery-powered embedded systems read the sensors and wirelessly transmit the sensor's values. A central computational node collects the wireless transmissions and analyzes the data. Two algorithms were developed that detect the patient's eating activities and location throughout the home from the sensor data. A web-based user interface was designed that allows a primary caregiver to remotely view the patient's status while away from the home. Numerous trials are performed which test the system's ability to monitor the patient's eating activities and location. The positive results of the trials show that the proposed system is able to detect eating patterns as defined by rules and localize in real-time the patient in the home, accurate to a single quadrant of a room. The proposed embedded system is highly affordable and has two novel features, namely eating detection and patient localization accurate to a single quadrant of any room in the home. Both features use sensors installed in the home and do not require the patient to wear any sensors on their person. The state-of-the-art products currently available are able to localize only to a single room without the patient wearing sensors.

Abstract:
Ubiquitous access to mobile and internet technology has influenced a significant increase in the amount of data produced, communicated and stored by corporations as well as by individual users, in recent years. The research presented in this thesis proposes an architectural framework to acquire, store, manipulate and integrate data and information within an urban transport environment, to optimise its operations in real-time. The deployed architecture is based on the integration of a number of technologies and tailor-made algorithms implemented to provide a management tool to aid traffic monitoring, using intelligent decision-making processes. A creative combination of Data Mining techniques and Machine Learning algorithms was used to implement predictive analytics, as a key component in the process of addressing challenges in monitoring and managing an urban transport network operation in real-time. The proposed solution has then been applied to an actual urban transport management system, within a partner company, Mermaid Technology, Copenhagen to test and evaluate the proposed algorithms and the architectural integration principles used. Various visualization methods have been employed, at numerous stages of the project to dynamically interpret the large volume and diversity of data to effectively aid the monitoring and decision-making process. The deliverables on this project include: the system architecture design, as well as software solutions, which facilitate predictive analytics and effective visualisation strategies to aid real-time monitoring of a large system, in the context of urban transport. The proposed solutions have been implemented, tested and evaluated in a Case Study in collaboration with Mermaid Technology. Using live data from their network operations, it has aided in evaluating the efficiency of the proposed system.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding runtime behavior in a real-time system may be difficult, as tools such as performance profilers and powerful debugging tools like those present in traditional personal computers may be unavailable, and computational resources can be limited for recording the runtime. Few of today's published literature evaluates the usability of runtime visualizations, and therefore this study will present solutions on how to create understandable runtime visualization. This study further evaluates one solution, conducting usability tests and performance tests on the solution. The solution proved to be effective in helping users understand runtime execution during the usability tests. Recording the runtime proved to adversely affect performance on the tested systems during the performance tests. Multiple methods of recording runtime were tested which all affected the performance. This performance impact was concluded to be insignificant in over 90% of normal use-cases, but programs that loaded the system heavily was significant. Most programs with heavy loads will see a relatively small but noticeable performance impact, while in some extreme cases, the execution times can increase by over 30% while recording the runtime.

Abstract:
System resource utilisation metrics is an important source of the decisionmaking process for a general-purpose auto-scaling solution in cloud computing. It is critical for a monitoring system to be light-weight in its usage of system resources. In this work, Tablespoon, a real-time monitoring system, is presented. It operates on a publish-subscribe architecture and is agent push-based. Tablespoon itself has a low bandwidth usage profile by using agent-side filtering and an inter-group aggregation mechanism. Our solution ensures that requested events are received at most once by the subscriber, whilst simultaneously minimising the loss of such events. The evaluation of Tablespoon shows that the average latency, in a limited use case, between publisher and subscriber, is around 500-700ms. Furthermore, the average CPU usage of the agents, depending on the use case, is about 0.5 percent when testing on Amazon Web Services.

Foo, Ki Fung Kelvin. "Real time voltage stability monitoring by Thevenin impedance estimation with local measurement." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/4652.

Full text
Abstract:
As modern power systems operate closer to the limits due to load growth and financial imperatives, voltage stability becomes a more important issue and there have been more incidents caused by voltage collapse. For example, there have been 11 outages affecting more than 4000MW between 1984 and 2000 in North America [1]. In power systems, load voltages decrease as the supplied loads increase until the maximum power transfer point is reached. The voltage will collapse if the load is increased above this limit. Therefore, it is important to monitor the loadability of a system to avoid voltage collapse. The loadability of a system can be calculated when the Thevenin impedance is available as the maximum power transfer occurs when the Thevenin impedance and the load impedance are the same in magnitude. This thesis suggests a method to estimate the Thevenin impedance of a system. ABB corporation suggests the Voltage Stability Predictor (VIP) method to estimate the Thevenin impedance, but there are problems with this method and it is not gaining popularity in industry. In this thesis, a method is suggested to estimate the Thevenin impedance by taking advantage of the existance of negative sequence components in the system. The concept of this method has been proved mathematically. Simulations were performed on simple systems and on the modified IEEE 13 bus power flow test case to verify the feasibility of the method and the results are promising. Then, the method was verified with field measurements for a 25kV substation. The voltages and currents were analyzed to estimate the Thevenin equivalent impedance of the power system and the results were compared with the design Thevenin equivalent impedance. The result confirms the viability of the method as the estimated Thevenin impedance matched the design value.

Abstract:
In today’s industry, companies are, to an increasing degree, beginning to embrace the concept of industry 4.0. One of these companies is Diab which has a factory located in Laholm where they manufacture composite material. Some of the machines at the factory are older with outdated control systems and require a way to log data in real-time. The goal of the project is to create a working prototype system that can monitor the production flow in real-time by using sensors to collect data about the work efficiency of the machine, measuring the idle time when the machine is working and when it’s not and storing this data in a database which can be accessible by a Graphical User Interface (GUI). The purpose is to investigate the requirements to get a fully operatable system and what it takes to maintain it to get an idea if the system should be self-developed by the company or buy/license from a third party. The system was built by using a NodeMCU ESP32, a Raspberry Pi 4B and a SparkFun DistanceSensor Breakout VL53L1X, and for the software to program the NodeMCU ESP32, Arduino IDE was used; Java language was used to develop the server on the Raspberry Pi and, together with MariaDB, to store the data. The tests that were conducted showed that the data could be displayed within a second in the created GUI but could not guarantee a reading of a passing block; however, it gave a good overview of the workflow of the machine. An improvement of the system is suggested by using visual-based object detection. An overview of the production in real-time can allow for future possibilities of optimising the production flow and, with an improvement of the system, can increase the automation of the production, which can bring the company closer to the concept of industry 4.0.

Abstract:
With the surging of cold-chain logistics industry, people pay more and more attention to the quality of cold-chain control. There emerge many approaches monitoring the dynamic situation along all the phases of the whole cold supply chain including processing, storage, transportation and selling. Here in iPack Center, KTH, a RFID real-time cold-chain monitoring system is presented. The system is aiming to track and monitor the situation of goods in-transit in real-time including the position, temperature, relative humidity as basic monitoring issue, gas concentration and shock parameters as optional. To know in which way and toward whom this product can position itself, a deeper investigation and knowledge of the current cold-chain logistics industry is essential. Some field interviews are conducted towards companies that are involved in cold-chain logistics industry at different segmentations majorly in pharmaceuticals and foods. The companies are chosen elaborately that they are considered that they can represent the market environment of cold-chain monitoring to some extent. The real thought and expectations from them are valuable as a useful reference to improve iPack’s own RFID tracking system in some detail or specification way as well as identify the real business opportunity, deduce the business model towards different parties that involved in this industry for the future work.

Large-scale structures such as bridges, dams and buildings have caused countless fatalities in the past decades because engineers were not able to detect the early signs of failure. It is believed that with the implementation of a distributed sensor network, many of these unfortunate events could have been avoided. The ultimate goal in applying distributed sensors is for structures to combine mechanical systems and computer processing to allow them to adapt themselves in extreme conditions without human assistance. The Flagpole project is attempting to build such a monitoring system by instrumenting a model of a flagpole in a laboratory environment. The selected sensors, accelerometers, strain gauges and thermocouples, provide a complete description of the model's behavior to the physical environment. These sensors stream data into a data acquisition system, which buffers the data and directs it to a database for storage. Visualization software allows for Internet users to view the data in real-time and analyze the model's reaction to current external forces. For this system to become more automated, new sensor technology must be explored. Recent advances in the field of MEMS technology and wireless communication should be examined to build a system that incorporates decision-making at the sensor level and is expandable to larger scale systems.

Abstract:
Rising infection rates in healthcare is a global issue that causes complications for the patient, extended hospital stay, financial difficulties, and even death. One of the crucial factors that reduce those infections is better hand hygiene. Due to the lack of automated systems that can help monitoring hand hygiene compliance and reporting on collected data, some hospitals use direct observations, surveys, dispensers usage measurements and other such methods to monitor the compliance of care providers. This thesis proposes an alternative system that takes advantage of emerging off-the-shelf infrastructures in hospitals, and in particular of Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) and intelligent hand sanitizer dispensers. Our RTLS-based system improves upon the current methods by enabling interactions with care providers through notifications when they do not execute expected hand hygiene actions during care processes, even for fine-grained location situations and by introducing the concept of intelligent dispensers. RHMNS (RTLS-based Hand Hygiene Monitoring and Notification System) has two approaches (time-based and activation-based) that are sharing the same structure but they are different in their way of deciding on taken or missed hand hygiene opportunities. RHMNS also provides informative reports about hand hygiene compliance and trends.

Abstract:
The study in this report mainly focuses on the Internet-based Monitoring and Controlling of a Real-Time Dynamic System interfaced via a dedicated local computer. The main philosophy behind this study is to allow the remote user to conduct an Internet-based Remote Operation (I-bRO) for the dynamic system. The dynamic system has been defined as the system which has its parts interrelated in such a way that a change in one part necessarily affects other parts of the system [I]. In order to achieve this goal, the study has been conducted in a form of an on-line and real-time Virtual Laboratory (VL). Through this form of laboratory, a user can carry out the experiment, perform real-time monitoring and controlling operations of the experiment and collect real and live data from the experiment through the network link as the user was physically in the laboratory. The dynamic system that has been selected for the test-rig of this study is a 3-phase Induction Motor (IM) which is mechanically coupled with a DC-Dynamometer that acts as a variable load to the IM. This system is a common laboratory experiment in the study of the Electrical Engineering for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The study covers both sides of the I-bRO; the hardware and the software. The hardware side includes the design and the development of a load control box that has been used to interface the DC-Dynamometer and consequently control it from the local computer. The software side covers the design and the development of the Virtual Instrumentation System (VIS) that has replaced successfully the physical Measurement and Test (M&T) instruments of the test-rig. Beside that, the software side includes the development of the internet remote front panel for the remote operation.
Furthermore, the software side includes the development of the software that has been used to analyse the system during the I-bRO. In this study, the LabVTEW7 program has been used to design and develop the VIS and the Matlab program has bee used to aualyse the system performance for the remote operations. This study also addresses the issues and problems related to the intranet or the internet to be used as the network for data communication between the test-rig and remote users. This study has been carried out in different stages as follows: 1. Designing and development of the VIS. 2. Interfacing the test-rig apparatus with a local computer. 3. Upload the system from the local computer to the network. 4. Study the performance of the system on the network for the purpose of the remote operations controlled over the internet. The developed system of this study has been used for data acquisition, network communications, instruments monitoring and controlling applications. A user can execute on-line and in the real-time the developed VIS from any point in the university. Due to the fact that the university network is directly integrated to the main internet server. a remote user through the main internet server is able to perform I-bRO of the selected dynamic system. There are many factors associated with the network, the internet or the intranet, and have direct influences on the control system performance throughout the remote operations. The most dominant factors are the random time-delays and the data losses.
These factors among others have to be addressed for a proper application of the I-bRO. For this reason, different cases and scenarios of the I-bRO have been investigated and simulated to study the affection of the network on the control system performance. The system is analysed under two control cases, closed loop with random time-delays and open loop when the internet server is disconnected and no communication between the input and the output of the system. In the first case, the closed loop, the internet server is assumed to be closed and subjected to random time-delays. In the second case, the internet server is subjected to random cut-off and thus opens the control loop. The results of both cases have been analysed and discussed. It has been found that, if the control system without the time-delays is stable, it remains stable even with small time-delays up to twenty seconds. This result is different from what has been shown in the literature.

Bad data detection and identification is one of the most important problems to be solved in real-time power system monitoring. During system operation, the decision-making process is based on analyses that use a database which is assumed to be reliable. Bad data can affect the results of these analyses and as a consequence the decisions taken may not be valid anymore. This may cause serious problems to system operation. This work presents a new method for debugging data in real- time power system monitoring. Data projection tecniques based on Kohonen´s self-organizing maps are employed to show that normalized innovations, obtained from a forecasting-aided state estimator, present excellent discrimination capability when compared to other variables such as raw measurements and normalized residuals. In the proposed method the problem of bad data identification is viewed as a pattern recognition problem, in which normalized innovations are use as input variables to a constructive artificial neural network that is responsible for identifying bad data. The method is able to distinguish between gross measurement and topological errors. Which can include branch or bus misconfigurations. The proposed method is tested for many different operating conditions involving different types of error. Tests are performed using data from the IEEE 24-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems. The performance of the method is evaluated and aspects such as computational efficiency, generalization capability and real-time implementation, among others, are also discussed.

As the network was developed and popular, the application of remote monitoring system is more and more broad-spectrum. Not only the security system in our society is still deficient but the cost of private security service is expensive as well. Both of them could not be afforded by the common people. Now it can cost us few to achieve the aim by combining the image capture, and network technique together with operating in coordination of the analysis and the image processes. The real-time remote monitoring system, which combines image captures, image processes and network control is proposed in this thesis. Thereamong, We focused on the image captures and processes. According to the MSDN functions which were afforded by Microsoft and USB(Universal Serial Bus), we can use the digital camera or CCD ones to capture images. In the parts of image analysis and image process, we can compress and save the image/video files and act motion detection to give the alarms. When someone intrudes the areas we were monitored, the system will be set in motion and sent the e-mail to the users. Finally, we attached the image transmission trough internet to our system. Let the users observe the condition of monitoring system by browser without any limits.

In recent years, Consumer consumption has dramatically increased with regard to food safety concerns. In order to reduce the harm more effectively, it has gradually moved towards organic researches that are non-toxic, pesticide-free, and free of antibiotics. Based on these reasons, the Energy Science and Technology Center of the university has completed the research and development program of the "Nontoxic Algal-bacterial Co-production Aquaculture Plant." However, due to cost of dissolved oxygen meter are found to be expansive in the market. Hence, the research results of this thesis used low-cost sensor modules which include ORP modules, PH values, and temperature modules. The Raspberry PI, as a gateway, collects data from a large number of aquaculture ponds and uses regression analysis to process data. The ORP and PH values are converted into dissolved oxygen (DO) and uploaded to the cloud database. The manager can set up various information of the aquaculture pool and Raspberry PI through the management page. Users can also conduct their mobile phone App to monitor remotely, and observed whether the parameters of the water quality exceed the standard. If the set of recommended parameters is exceeded, the user will be alerted through the GCM push system. The concept mentioned by above is to achieve the reduction of cost of both labor and implementation of an automated intelligent real-time monitoring system.

Recently medical products, such as Electrocardiography (ECG) applications, become emerging research topics. ECG applications are usually integrated with WiFi and Bluetooth wireless technologies, but the research of Zigbee ECG applications are not relatively common. Zigbee technology is well developed and widely used in many fields, such as automatic system, medical systems, and security systems. Zigbee is a low cost and low power usage wireless technology so it can be applied for long-term data monitoring. This purpose of this research is to send ECG data signals by Zigbee networks and integrate ECG and Zigbee technologies for medical data monitoring. This new approach can switch current wired and offline ECG recording approaches as wireless monitoring approach to overcome limitations of current approaches. To develop the real-time ECG wireless transmission system, ECG biomedical monitoring hardware is implemented and integrated with the Zigbee module in order to establish the hardware system of ECG remote monitoring. We adjust ECG biomedical signal accuracy by realistic measuring and design Zigbee wireless transmission model for delivering remote ECG data monitoring transmissions. Based on the system measurement, ECG implementation model can accurately retrieve ECG signals and present these signals as meaningful demonstration. Through the simulations of Zigbee real-time network transmissions, the evaluations show packet delivering ratio can achieve 97%, which shows the effectiveness of real-time ECG wireless transmissions. The realistic implemented system can be the prototype of following related research topics.

ABSTRACT With the fast development of the hi-tech industry, many expensive facilities require a real-time monitoring and maintaining system to guarantee the production line achieving the best condition. The Forgine machine is one of the most important machines for steal production, where its Lubrication flowing amount plays the most critical role. Once the Lubrication flowing is unstable or unusual, the Forgine machine will break down and result in a serious system malfunction. Accordingly, it may need high cost to resolve the problem. The objective of this research is to develop a real-time Lubrication flowing supervisory system. The proposed system can provide the engineer a crucial information regarding the Lubrication flowing status. According to the information, an early warning signal will be sent to the engineer whenever the Lubrication flowing amount is found insufficient or unstable. The proposed system includes the hardware and software. The hardware module just adds a PLC controller as the core controlling unit that collects the Lubrication flowing signal. However, the original hardware system does not change. Besides, we apply LabVIEW package to design the human-interface, especially for the Lubrication flowing monitoring. The information collected by PLC can be provided to the engineer to fix the problem of machine breakdown. Moreover, it can be stored in the PC database for malfunction analysis. Consequently, the potential fault in the Forgine machine can be thus avoided.

The needs of home health care systems are getting stronger day by day in the aging population. This research used a device called ‘Vital-Belt’ designed by Dr. Chih-Cheng Lu, NHRI. The device acquires two bio-signals in real-time: ECG and signals from 3-axis accelerometer for detecting falling. We added a very low power microcontroller MSP430 into this device to process these bio-signals. Motion artifact is the most critical problem in the ambulatory ECG. In this research, we emphasized the processing of the ECG disturbed by motion artifact. A dynamic threshold was determined by calculating the activity levels from accelerometer. We used this method to detect heart rate and abnormal beats in real-time and transmitted abnormal ECG to a computer or PDA via Bluetooth. From five healthy persons, the averaged accuracy of R-peak detection was 99.85%, 99.26% and 99.16% in standing, walking (4 miles/hr) and slow running (6 miles/hr) situations, respectively. The averaged detection error rate was 1.45%, 1.84% and 1.89%, respectively. The experiments were performed in a treadmill. For atrial premature contraction (APC) and ventricular premature contraction (VPC) detection, test four MIT/BIH data sets (105, 116, 118, and 119) were used. The averaged accuracy of R-peak detection was 99.89%. The averaged accuracy of APC and VPC detection was 93.81%.

The focus on the application of information and communication technologies & electronics (ICTE) in agriculture has proved to be very efficient and revolutionary in several ways. With the adoption of increasingly efficient and modern technologies, agriculture, in general, improves its competitiveness and production is carried out in a more sustainable way. The intensive use of ICTE in this sector has been aimed at creating integrated solutions that generate efficiency gains in productivity, sustainability and economic, social and environmental quality. This type of technologies, when aimed at monitoring livestock, have some characteristics in common. Precise positioning and geolocation from GPS, geographic mapping, sensors and communication systems are some of the tools that will allow the development of a complete and extremely accurate system for monitoring vital signs. This proposal for a cattle or equine ICTE-based monitoring system is developed as a belt. It contains a microcontroller that is used to evaluate the animal's heart rate and detect abnormal mobility. The correct evaluation of these two parameters proves very useful for the detection of many of the pathologies and anomalies that constitute economic losses for the producers. With accurate monitoring, it is possible to circumvent these events that are detrimental to animal production.

With rapid development of technology, accurate equipment or operation of production line machine that worked for a long time, that power quality requirement for more stringent, and the interference event in the power quality monitoring have become relatively more important, therefore the analysis of power quality measurement and analysis necessary to be more efficient. The references in the power quality research, the digital signal processing methods for the use of discrete wavelet transform, and its analysis in a serial input signal to input the discrete wavelet transformation, and to calculate the average power. When the voltage interfere with the event occurred , the signal power will change. In the analysis of discrete signal processing, as point by point approach, but real-time monitoring system can not use this signal processing approach. Therefore in this paper proposes the sub-signal processing methods, when the signal input to its temporary buffer, and as the signals at zero-crossover point to carry out the sub-signal input to the DWT, and to calculation of their average range. Electrocardiography (ECG) is often used as a surveillance subject's vital signs of a physiological signal in hospital. It is a big burden for hospital manpower if a continuous monitoring system of physiological signals is not an automated system. Our system provides a reliable automatic monitoring system, which can monitor the subjects’ ECG for a long time. The proposed system supports multiple subjects and subjects were able to join or remove the system at any time. Monitors can diagnose subjects by a convenient graphic user interface (GUI) in real-time. The GUI could detection the heart rate. When the heart rate is abnormal, the GUI will alert the monitors immediately. Physiological signals are transmitted wirelessly via IEEE 802.15.4 communication technology. In order to support multiple subjects, our system implemented a time division multiple access protocol on Z-Stack. Moreover, we adjust the transmitter and receiver’s clock by a reliable and simple time synchronization method. This method saves the cost of computing between transmitters and receiver. The proposed system was proved to achieve more than 98% received data integrity when there are subjects join and remove system rapidly. The system could achieve more than 99% received data integrity in low interferences environment and more than 94% received data integrity in high interferences environment.

A WEDM ignition delay time monitoring system which can display the distribution of the ignition delay time on a real-time basis is developed in this research. The discharge pulse trains of the gap voltage and the gap current in WEDM process are rectified into square waveforms respectively before they are sent into the 89C52 microcontroller, the major component of the system, for data processing. Based on length of the delay time, the discharge pulse is categorized into two groups – the normal discharges and the abnormal discharges. After every 1000 discharges, the distribution of the ignition delay time, the percentages of the normal discharges and abnormal discharges, and the time consumed for 1000 discharges just recorded are displayed instantly on the LCD panel of the system. The normal discharges can be further divided into two sub-groups according to the specific reference ignition delay-time value set by the user. The respective percentages of the two sub-groups are also presented on the LCD panel. To verify the system, the distribution tendency of the delay time is observed under various machining conditions. It shows that the distribution is skew more to the left when the feed rate is increased or before the WEDM machine shut down itself due to frequent occurrence of short circuit discharges. On the other hand, the distribution is skew less to the left when the servo voltage is increased or when the wire breaking is about to take place. Both the tendencies are reasonable and explainable by the physical mechanism of WEDM.
