Abstract:
Background: Cardiac myxomas are benign cardiac neoplasms usually found solitarily located within a single cardiac chamber, most commonly in the left atrium. With no established cause, they are often thought to occur spontaneously with no particular genetic cause or external incitement. While it has been explored, there is no universally accepted correlation with myxoma formation following a cardiac ablation procedure. We propose the theory of an iatrogenic causation of cardiac myxoma formation, likely incited by the local tissue injury during the transseptal puncture of the interatrial wall. Case Summary: We present the case of a 62-year-old male with a medical history significant for Atrial Fibrillation for which he underwent a transseptal ablation procedure, during which a puncture is made through the interatrial septum. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms obtained prior to the procedure did not reveal any intracardiac masses or abnormalities. Two-years post-procedure, during an inpatient hospitalization for a suspected asthma exacerbation, a new transthoracic echocardiogram demonstrated a pedunculated mass within the left atrium. 1. Abstract:
Coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) are relatively rare defects that range significantly in clinical presentation, most often discovered in adults with concomitant coronary artery disease. There remains no general consensus on the optimal management of CAAs. A vast majority of cases reported in literature are managed operatively or with percutaneous stenting. We however demonstrate a case of a CAA discovered upon angiography for a STEMI managed entirely with intracoronary thrombolytics and intravenous heparin, followed by a repeat coronary angiography that confirmed re-opening of the occluded vessel now with distal coronary blood flow. 1. Zima, Tomáš, Jan Živný, and Zdeněk Kleibl. "70th Anniversary of Folia Biologica." Folia Biologica 70, no. 1 (2024): 1–44. http://dx.doi.org/10.14712/fb2024070010001.

Full text
Abstract:
Folia Biologica celebrates 70 years of continuous publication of research papers. The first volume was published in Prague in 1954 on behalf of the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (since 1990 the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) under the subtitle “International edition of the journal Czechoslovakian Biology”. Born in the dark days of the Cold War, Folia Biologica provided a thin but important link between the politically controlled science behind the Iron Curtain in the former Czechoslovakia and that of the free Western world. Initially, the journal focused on research papers in the fields of experimental medicine, immunology, virology, and experimental zoology. Since 1961 (Volume 7), Folia Biologica has been indexed in the Web of Science database. The first issue of Volume 7 was introduced by a review article by Peter Brian Medawar (1915–1987), winner of the 1960 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine “for the discovery of acquired immunological tolerance”, which is reprinted in this anniversary issue [1].In the late 1960s, during the political relaxation that culminated in the Prague Spring, cooperation with free Western science intensified and enabled a lively scientific dialogue between Czechoslovak and foreign biological scientists, namely immunologists, molecular biologists, and virologists, as illustrated by a series of original research articles from Folia Biologica by Georg Davis Snell (1903–1996) and Jean Dausset (1916–2009), who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1980 “for their discoveries concerning genetically determined structures on the cell surface that regulate immunological reactions”, which led to the discovery of the major histocompatibility system (MHC) [2–7]. Another powerful example is an article in Folia Biologica by François Jacob (1920–2013), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1965 for discoveries that helped elucidate the transcriptional control of enzyme levels [8].Despite the years of political repression during the “normalization” period following the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops into Czechoslovakia in 1968, the scientists and editors of Folia Biologica from the Academy of Sciences were able to maintain vibrant contacts with the world’s leading scientists. In 1981, the journal changed its subtitle to “Journal of Cellular and Molecular Biology”. In 1983, Folia Biologica published the article by Renato Dulbecco (1914–2012), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1975 for “discoveries concerning the interaction between tumor viruses and the genetic material of the cell”[9].With further orientation towards human molecular medicine, the journal entered the era after the Velvet Revolution in 1989, which represented the desired end of political control over national science. The interest of Czechoslovak and Czech scientists in publishing in Folia Biologica began to decline at the end of the 1990s, when they had at their disposal the full range of scientific journals from all over the world. Since volume 63 (January 2006), Folia Biologica has been published by the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague, in a fully open access model. With the new decade that begins with this issue, the journal has undergone a series of improvements, including the strengthening of the editorial board, the assignment of a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) number to each article, the improvement of the cover layout and graphics, the innovation of the website, and a more precise definition of the journal’s aim. Folia Biologica now publishes articles describing original research aimed at elucidating a wide range of issues in biomedicine, especially in oncology and human molecular genetics. In addition, the journal focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease and provides studies on all organisms, cells and tissues that serve as biological and disease models, as well as clinical and translational research studies. Further improvements towards sustainable and rapid publication will be accomplished by introducing an online-only publication model planned for 2025.To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Folia Biologica, we begin the anniversary volume with the reprint of Sir Peter Brian Medawar’s review. To commemorate the continuing history of the journal, and to thank our predecessors and contributors, we present the title pages, table of contents, and editorial boards of Folia Biologica by decade, illustrating the changes in research focus, human knowledge, and the evolution of the journal. We would like to thank all authors, reviewers, editorial board members, editors and managing editors involved in the journal production in the past decades, namely Ivan Málek, Milan Hašek, Alena Langerová, Josef Říman, Jan Bubeník, Jan Svoboda, Emanual Nečas, Karel Smetana Jr. and Zdeněk Kostrouch, for their commitment and dedication to Folia Biologica. We wish our journal many more decades of scientifically interesting articles, publishing open-minded science by excellent authors for the pleasure of satisfied readers!

Abstract:
Abstract: Equipping teachers to work with neurodiverse learners still deserves focus and has received none when preparing educators to teach at schools. While policies regarding education inclusivity attempt to highlight and address the issue of accessibility, there is still no formal methodology within teacher training courses that focus on how to aid educators in instructing neurodiverse learners. This paper aims to fill that gap by proposing a pedagogical framework of teacher preparedness which integrates universal design for learning (UDL), differentiated instruction, and cognitive psychology. The main goal of the research paper was to examine the existing documents and literature to determine the gaps in traditional forms of education and teacher training programs. This study proposes a new model of systematic education which employs the principles of competency-based education with its requirement of active participation, flexible forms, and the use of assistive devices for evaluation. This framework is designed to resolve the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, so that new teachers can develop and implement adaptive instruction and inclusive environments. This paper adds to the conversation on inclusive teacher education by providing a clear roadmap for incorporating neurodiversity-responsive teaching methods into teacher training programs. It advocates for curriculum changes that emphasize practical experience and evidence-based approaches, encouraging policymakers and educators to reconsider teacher preparation for a more equitable education system. Future studies should empirically test the suggested framework in various educational environments.

Abstract:
The multi-volume work Syntax of Dutch presents a synthesis of current thinking on Dutch syntax. The text of the seven already available volumes was written between 1995 and 2015 and issued in print between 2012 and 2016. The various volumes are primarily concerned with the description of the Dutch language and, only where this is relevant, with linguistic theory. They will be an indispensable resource for researchers and advanced students of languages and linguistics interested in the Dutch language. This volume is the final one of the series and addresses issues relating to coordination. It contains three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the syntactic and semantic properties of coordinate structures and their constituting elements, that is, the coordinators and the coordinands they link. Chapter 2 discusses the types of ellipsis known as conjunction reduction and gapping found in coordinate structures. Chapter 3 discusses elements seemingly exhibiting coordination-like properties, such as dan ‘than’ in comparative constructions like Jan is groter dan zij ‘Jan is taller than she’.

Abstract:
Since its founding in 1943, Medievalia et Humanistica has won worldwide recognition as the first scholarly publication in America to devote itself entirely to medieval and Renaissance studies. Since 1970, a new series, sponsored by the Modern Language Association of America and edited by an international board of distinguished scholars and critics, has published interdisciplinary articles. In yearly hardcover volumes, the new series publishes significant scholarship, criticism, and reviews treating all facets of medieval and Renaissance culture: history, art, literature, music, science, law, economics, and philosophy. Volume 48 is a special issue that presents the outcome of an international workshop (“Transnational Aspects of Early Modern Drama”) held (virtually) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum in June 2021. The conference was hosted by Jan Bloemendal, one of the most distinguished scholars in the field. This volume contains six transnational and/or translingual case studies of early modern theatre and four reviews which cover various epochs, genres and discourses.

Abstract:
Starting from February 2020, Italy was the first among the European countries, to experience dramatic rises in daily COVID-19 deaths and contagions. An important aspect that distinguished the first COVID-19 wave (Feb-Jun 2020) from the following waves of infection in Italy was the sheer imbalance, in terms of deaths and contagion, between Northern and Southern regions of the country. Despite the fact that the South was far less hit by the disease, a series of narratives that associated the spread of the epidemic with some sort of Southern infector started to appear, conveyed by social media posts, news pieces, talk shows, and even football banners. In this chapter, there is an attempt to identify and critically analyse the discourses that inscribe a characteristic “Southernification” of the pandemic in Italy, that is a partial and symbolic attempt to (1) discursively transfer the infection to the South; and/or (2) hand over the responsibilities that are behind the particularly violent first wave of infections in the country to Southern communities, polities, and cultural practices.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The technologies have increased the role of IT in evolving the path for the future. A sense of belonging and significance to the market is felt by current industries. Procurement, assembly, and supply were affected by the digital revolt that has swept the world. Now machine learning is a hot area among scholars and industry professionals. Two decades ago, there were few publications of machine learning and supply chain management. SCM-related ML application research hasn't been thoroughly examined in the literature till date with respect to the Indian steel industry. As a result, this study examined articles from Jan. 2010 to Dec. 2020 in five major databases to present the latest research trends. A quantitative analysis of 112 shortlisted articles revealed that there were not enough publications to form a strong group force in this field. This study's comprehensive look at ML techniques used in SCM will help future research. A true reflection of today's industries, the chapter accurately reflects prospects to express feelings, thoughts, and contribute to future industries.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the relationship between the Organisation pour l’Harmonisation en Afrique du Droit des Affaires (OHADA; the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa) and the Hague Principles. OHADA is an African supranational organization which was created on October 17, 1993. As per the Preamble and Article 1 of the OHADA Treaty, OHADA aims at creating simple, modern, and harmonized business law rules in Africa. To achieve this goal, OHADA has five institutions: (i) the Conference of Heads of State and Government; (ii) the Council of Ministers; (iii) the Common Court of Justice and Arbitration; (iv) the Regional Training Centre for Legal Officers; and (v) the Permanent Secretariat. Uniform Acts are the main instrument of OHADA. To understand the rules governing choice of law in commercial international contracts under OHADA law, it is important to examine the relation between the acts of OHADA (Uniform Acts and regulations) and the domestic law of the Member States. Meanwhile, there is no uniform codification of private international law under OHADA law. The chapter then explains that the Working Group on the Preliminary Draft Uniform Act on the Law of Obligations in the OHADA Region in 2015 did not use the Hague Principles, and why this omission should be reversed.

Abstract:
Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to shed light on the effects of the crises on the SMEs and to identify the strategies that have proved resilient. The analyses are based on two representative surveys on Hungarian SMEs – the first conducted just after the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic in May of 2020, while second during the energy crisis and the Ukrainian war in 2022. The results show that although almost half of the SMEs’ operation were affected by COVID-19 after the first wave in 2020, they focused on retaining their employees. In addition, companies that were better prepared (e.g. with a contingency plan) and those that were in a better situation before the pandemic were able to react more smoothly to the new situation or even benefit from it. Nonetheless, firms did not have enough capacity to engage in digitalisation projects. In the case of the war in Ukraine, the logistic regression model shows that the effect on firms are affected by (1) the previous situation of the business, (2) the available business opportunities, (3) the respondent’s opinion on the significance of luck in business success, and (4) the change in the amount of bank loans.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study presents a comprehensive analysis of strong ground motion data acquired to better explain the extensive damage observed after the February 6th, 2023, Kahramanmaras, SE Turkey earthquakes (Mw 7.8 and Mw 7.6). As spectrum intensity values computed using response spectra of a ground motion are closely correlated with building damage, special emphasis is given on some engineering intensities of these records. As such, peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV), peak ground displacement (PGD), efficient duration, Arias intensity (Ia) and Housner’s spectrum intensity (SI) are obtained and compared with the past earthquakes occurred in or nearby Turkey. Additionally, selected acceleration-displacement response spectra and inelastic earthquake spectra are generated for various damping ratios and ductility levels (µ=1~8) for several cities that were primarily affected by the earthquakes. The spectral values are compared with the design earthquake spectra provided by the both past (after 1975) and current Seismic Codes. Particularly, in regions where reports of widespread building damage was prevalent, this comparison revealed substantial discrepancies between the demand and code-based design spectra. Numerical results indicate that since the recorded ground accelerations are far beyond the recommended ones proposed in the Turkey Building Earthquake Code (TBEC, 2018), higher seismic demands are obtained particularly for buildings with a fundamental period range until 2 seconds. Poor soil conditions contributed to damage by magnifying the seismic demands. The recorded peak accelerations were considerably high, resulting in severe structural damage, particularly in RC buildings with substandard columns (i.e. with high axial load and shear demand) and in masonry buildings (both historic and non-historic). Inelastic response spectra of buildings with shorter periods showed large fluctuations, suggesting that these structures were subjected to severe shaking. Computed spectrum intensities for some stations are multiple times larger than the ones calculated for the past earthquakes, justifying such huge devastation. Keywords: Turkey Earthquake Doublet, Strong Ground Motion Characteristics, Inelastic response spectra.

Abstract:
REFERENCIAS 1. Maremmani AG et al. Substance abuse and psychosis. <title>ABSTRACT</title> <p>The DoD Digital Engineering Strategy [<xref rid="R1" ref-type="bibr">1</xref>] released in June 2018 outlined the DoD’s strategic goals which “promote the use of digital artifacts as a technical means of communication across a diverse set of stakeholders” In addition to build, test, field and sustainment of defense systems, emphasis was placed on the acquisition and procurement of systems and the importance of digital engineering. This was further reinforced in the Feb 2022 release of the Engineering of Defense Systems Guidebook [<xref rid="R2" ref-type="bibr">2</xref>] which contains Digital Engineering sections in each chapter. The norm for Systems Engineering has become Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) in which models are used at all phases of development. To complete the digital thread from concept to disposal, models will be required for the acquisition phase. This paper will describe Model-Based Acquisition (MBAcq), and how it can be used to increase clarity compliance and understanding in Capability Systems and Software Acquisition for ground vehicles.</p> <p>Citation: M. Abstract:
The gas crisis has fed through to a huge impact on wholesale electricity prices in Britain. We use hourly price and generation data to estimate the impact on associated revenues to different types of generators. Given the extent of forward contracting, we complement simple results based on the day-ahead prices (“Case 1”) with a more realistic case based on a representative, technology-specific assumptions on forward contracts (“Case 2”). We estimate that revenues to GB generators rose by almost £30bn, from about £20.5bn/yr (pre- Covid) to £49.5bn in 2022. About 70% of this accrued to gas generators (from about £6bn/yr to £19bn) and renewable generators with Renewable Obligation Certification (from £7.7bn to £15.5bn). There are various indications that the increase in revenues to gas plants significantly exceeded the rise in their input costs, and no reason to think the generating cost of these renewables significantly increased. Nuclear, and some other biomass and renewables also benefited. We find that the Electricity Generation Levy, introduced in Jan 2023, would have had limited impact on these numbers if it had existed in 2022 and is likely to have less impact in 2023. Finally, we discuss reasons and potential implications of the findings.

Abstract:
Objectives. This systematic review evaluates the rehabilitation interventions for patients who have undergone (or will undergo) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA) for the treatment of osteoarthritis. We addressed four Key Questions (KQs): comparisons of (1) rehabilitation prior (“prehabilitation”) to TKA versus no prehabilitation, (2) comparative effectiveness of different rehabilitation programs after TKA, (3) prehabilitation prior to THA versus no prehabilitation, (4) comparative effectiveness of different rehabilitation programs after THA. Data sources and review methods. We searched Medline®, PsycINFO®, Embase®, the Cochrane Register of Clinical Trials, CINAHL®, Scopus®, and ClinicalTrials.gov from Jan 1, 2005, to May 3, 2021, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and adequately adjusted nonrandomized comparative studies (NRCSs). We evaluated clinical outcomes selected with input from a range of stakeholders. We assessed the risk of bias and evaluated the strength of evidence (SoE) using standard methods. Meta-analysis was not feasible, and evidence was synthesized and reported descriptively. The PROSPERO protocol registration number is CRD42020199102. Results. We found 78 RCTs and 5 adjusted NRCSs. Risk of bias was moderate to high for most studies. • KQ 1: Compared with no prehabilitation, prehabilitation prior to TKA may increase strength and reduce length of hospital stay (low SoE) but may lead to comparable results in pain, range of motion (ROM), and activities of daily living (ADL) (low SoE). There was no evidence of an increased risk of harms due to prehabilitation (low SoE). • KQ 2: Various rehabilitation interventions after TKA may lead to comparable improvements in pain, ROM, and ADL (low SoE). Rehabilitation in the acute phase (initiated within 2 weeks of surgery) may lead to increased strength (low SoE) but result in similar strength when delivered in the post-acute phase (low SoE). No studies reported evidence of risk of harms due to rehabilitation delivered in the acute period following TKA. Compared with various controls, post-acute rehabilitation may not increase the risk of harms (low SoE). • KQ 3: For all assessed outcomes, there is insufficient (or no) evidence addressing the comparison between prehabilitation and no prehabilitation prior to THA. • KQ 4: Various rehabilitation interventions after THA may lead to comparable improvements in pain, strength, ADL, and quality of life. There is some evidence of no increased risk of harms due to the intervention (low SoE). • There is insufficient evidence regarding which patients may benefit from (p)rehabilitation for all KQs and insufficient evidence regarding comparisons of different providers and different settings of (p)rehabilitation for all KQs. There is insufficient evidence on costs of (p)rehabilitation and no evidence on cost effectiveness for all KQs. Conclusion. Despite the large number of studies found, the evidence regarding various prehabilitation programs and comparisons of rehabilitation programs for TKA and THA is ultimately sparse. This is a result of the diversity of interventions studied and outcomes reported across studies. As a result, the evidence is largely insufficient or of low SoE. New high-quality research is needed, using standardized intervention terminology and core outcome sets, especially to allow network meta-analyses to explore the impact of intervention attributes on patient-reported, performance-based, and healthcare-utilization outcomes.
