Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>Steady state process simulation is used throughout the chemical industry to guide development and help reduce uncertainty and risk. Volumetric equations of state (EOS)s are the most robust of the numerous methods available for estimating various thermodynamic properties of interest because they are valid for the entire fluid phase. In some operating regimes, such as those near or above a component's critical point, EOS methods are the only option available. Improving the property estimation accuracy of EOSs through volume translation is an attractive approach because mathematical translations can be layered onto currently implemented models without altering the underlying (untranslated) equation. However, unconstrained volume translation functions can lead to nonphysical results, such as negative heat capacities, in the translated model. This project has created a framework for modifying EOSs through volume translation so that the translated model still retains the global validity characteristic of EOS models. A novel volume translation method dependent on both temperature and density was then developed and applied to the Soave-Redlich-Kwong EOS. This modified translation provides good molar volume accuracy (within five percent of accepted values) for a wide variety of pure compounds. The improvement in accuracy in the region around the critical point is particularly noteworthy, as the modified translation is more accurate than other, extended virial-type EOSs that require more than twice as many adjustable parameters.<br>(cont.) Phase equilibrium predictions remain largely unaffected by the translation and extension of the translated EOS to multicomponent systems proceeds in the same manner as the original model. Unknown parameter values can be reliably estimated from critical properties and ambient fluid properties without extensive regression. Perquè l'audiodescripció comenci a produir-se a gran escala i formi part de les graelles d'emissió en televisió de manera sistemàtica, els aspectes tècnics formals han d'estar estandarditzats. Un dels aspectes clau perquè el servei funcioni com a servei d'accessibilitat és el volum d'àudio. El volum de l'audiodescripció ha de ser suficient perquè els comentaris s'escoltin amb claredat en tot moment, però no hi ha fins a la data indicació concreta al respecte. Aquesta tesi es centra en el volum d'àudio com a element d'avaluació de la qualitat en l'audiodescripció. La primera part de la tesi fa una revisió bibliogràfica centrada en el tractament que ha rebut el so com a element de l'audiodescripció en diferents documents: articles científics, guies de bones pràctiques i estàndards de regulació. També es fa una revisió d'actuals legislacions sobre accessibilitat audiovisual en diferents països europeus. La segona part i de la tesi presenta dos tests d'usuari realitzats en 2015 i 2017 respectivament. El primer d'ells es va dur a terme exclusivament amb usuaris amb discapacitat visual i avalua la influència de la barreja d'àudio sobre diferents elements sonors d'una audiodescripció. El segon test, dut a terme tant amb usuaris amb discapacitat visual com amb usuaris sense problemes de visió, se centra la diferència de volum mínima recomanable entre una locució i un soroll de fons per assegurar que la intel·ligibilitat de la veu no es veu afectada. L'objectiu és establir un rang de volum d'àudio testat amb usuaris que es pugui aplicar de manera sistemàtica en el procés de producció d'audiodescripció.<br>Para que la audiodescripción empiece a producirse a gran escala y forme parte de las parrillas de emisión en televisión de manera sistemática, los aspectos técnicos formales tienen que estar estandarizados. Uno de los aspectos clave para que el servicio funcione como servicio de accesibilidad es el volumen de audio. El volumen de la audiodescripción debe ser suficiente para que los comentarios se escuchen con claridad en todo momento, pero no existe hasta la fecha indicación concreta al respecto. Esta tesis se centra en el volumen de audio como elemento de evaluación de la calidad en la audiodescripción. La primera parte de la tesis hace una revisión bibliográfica centrada en el tratamiento que ha recibido el sonido como elemento de la audiodescripción en diferentes documentos: artículos científicos, guías de buenas prácticas y estándares de regulación. También se hace una revisión de actuales legislaciones sobre accesibilidad audiovisual en distintos países europeos. La segunda pare de la tesis presenta dos tests de usuario realizados en 2015 y 2017 respectivamente. El primero de ellos se llevó a cabo exclusivamente con usuarios con discapacidad visual y evalúa la influencia de la mezcla de audio sobre diferentes elementos sonoros de una audiodescripción. El segundo, llevado a cabo tanto con usuarios con discapacidad visual como con usuarios sin problemas de visión, se centra la diferencia de volumen mínima recomendable entre una locución y un ruido de fondo para asegurar que la inteligibilidad de la voz no se ve afectada. El objetivo es establecer un rango de volumen de audio testado con usuarios que se pueda aplicar de manera sistemática en el proceso de producción de audiodescripción.<br>In order that audiodescription starts to be produced on a large scale basis and becomes part of television broadcast grids its formal and technical aspects must be standardized. One of the key aspects that must be regulated in order that the service works effectively as access tool is volume. Audio volume of the audiodescription track must be loud enough to allow the comments be clearly heard in all scenes. Currently there is no specific standard on audio volume level for audiodescription. This thesis focuses on volume as key quality evaluation element in audiodescription. The first part of the thesis makes a bibliographical review of the approach taken by research papers, regulatory standards and good practices manuals, towards the role of sound in audiodescription. Also, a review of current legislation on audiovisual accessibility laws in different European countries is made, as well as an introduction to basic concepts of the sound wave and digital audio recording. The second part of the thesis presents two user tests carried out in 2015 and 2017. The first one was carried out exclusively with visually impaired people and evaluates the influence of the audio mixing technique over different audio elements of an audiodescription. The second test was carried out with both visually and non visually impaired users and focuses on minimum audio volume difference that should exist between the audiodescription tack and background noise to keep the intelligibility of the narration. The objective is to establish a range of volume in decibels that can be systematically applied in the production and broadcasting process of audio description.

Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons aux espaces de modules de surfaces plates ayant des propriétés proches celles des surfaces de translation. Plus précisement nous considérons les trois types de surfaces plates suivants: -Surfaces de translation à bord géodésique; -Surfaces plates avec forêt effaçante; -Surfaces plates sphériques Dans chacun de ces trois cas, nous montrons d'abord que l'espace de mdules en question est le quotient d'une variété plate affine complexe par un groupe agissant proprement discontinument préservant une forme volume. Dans un deuxième temps, nous définissons des fonctions d'énergie sur chacun de ces espaces de modules, et montrons que leur intégrale par rapport à la notre forme volume est finie. Ce résultat nous permet de retrouver des résultats bien connus de Masur-Veech et Thurston<br>In this thesis, we are interested in moduli spaces of flat surfaces having properties closed to those of translation surfaces. More precisely, we consider three types of flat surfaces: -Translation surfaces with geodesic boundary; -Flat surfaces with erasing forest; -Spherical flat surfaces. In each of those cases, we first show that the moduli space under consideration is a quotient of a flat complex affine manifold by the action of a group acting properly discontinuously, and preserving a volume forme. Next, we define some energy function on those moduli spaces, and show that the integral of those functions with respect to our volume form is finite. As a consequence, we recover some well known results of Masur-Veech, and Thurston

Abstract:

This thesis is based on the second volume of Afal al-Tavarikh, the 17th century Safavid court chronicle. It consists of a historiographical study of this source and an annotated translation of the section concerning the early years of Shah Tahmasp's reign (1524-1529). The author Fazl b. Zayn al-'Abidim b. Rub Allah alKhuzani al-Isfahani was writing his history in 1617-1639 during the reigns of Shah 'Abbas I (r. 1587-1629) and Shah Safi (r. 1629-1642) and devoted the second volume entirely to the reign of Shah Tahmasp (r. 1524-1576). Chapter one of the thesis deals with the author, his life and career as a provincial Vazir during the reign of Shah 'Abbas, and his emigration to India. It identifies the formative influences which shaped the author's distinctive view of history. One of Fazli's strengths as a historian is his use of histories that are no longer extant. The sources have therefore been examined in order to assess the influence of these "lost histories" on his presentation of Shah Tahmasp's early reign. Altal al-Taviifikh contains transcriptions of more official documents than are found in any other Safavid court chronicle. The first chapter therefore underlines the importance of this source as a depository of chancery documents. The historiographical evaluation of Aftal proposes that this history is essentially a product of the reign of Shah <Abbas. It should be viewed as part of Shah 'Abbas' propaganda campaign, which aimed at strengthening the Safavid Shah's claim to legitimacy. Chapter two is a critical evaluation of Altal al-Tavirfikh. This chapter examines some of the historiographical issues which were raised in chapter one, in greater depth. Three case studies have been presented in order to draw attention to the author's tendency to suppress inconvenient truths and to determine the ideological basis which underpins the author's historical interpretation. It also outlines how Fazli's ideological bias determined the structure of his narrative and his literary style. Chapter three consists of the partial translation of the text followed by a commentary. The translation deals with the narrative of the first six years of Shah Tahmasp's minority to the year 936/1529. Although the inter-tribal factionalism of the Qizilbash tribes continued to dominate the court politics, 936/1529 signified the first occasion when the young Shah Tahmasp succeeded in asserting greater personal political authority at court. This was made possible by the prestige he derived from his victory at the battle of Jam in 935/1528 against the Uzbeks. This allowed him to invite the Ustajlii uymaq back to court from exile in Gilan and thus destablise the hegemony hitherto exercised by their Qizilbash rivals- the Tekkeliis. This consideration has determined the logical break in the narrative and the translation. The commentary consists of further historiographical notes, prosopography, and notes on geography.

Abstract:

O CD-ROM Voz: Fonoaudiologia e Medicina, volume 1, vem sendo utilizado como recurso didático em materiais de educação presencial e a distância, bem como estratégia terapêutica na prática clínica, havendo, ainda, a possibilidade de aplicação na aprendizagem de uma segunda língua. Sendo assim, este estudo foi conduzido com a hipótese de que é possível realizar a tradução transcultural deste CD-ROM para a língua inglesa. Os objetivos dessa pesquisa foram: a) atualizar a versão em Português do CD-ROM; b) traduzir e adaptar os conteúdos atualizados do CD-ROM em língua portuguesa para a língua inglesa americana e c) avaliar o conteúdo da tradução e a capacidade de reprodução dos objetivos e competências do material educacional na língua inglesa. Considerando estudos internacionais, para esta pesquisa foi utilizada uma metodologia que engloba a tradução feita por um tradutor, a retrotradução realizada por um segundo tradutor e a versão consenso realizada por um terceiro tradutor. Esta versão consenso foi submetida a uma banca de dez especialistas das áreas de fonoaudiologia, odontologia e tradução para avaliação. Como critério para avaliação da banca de especialistas, cada um dos membros preencheu dois questionários englobando a pertinência dos conceitos, os significados e a equivalência entre os pares de línguas de todas as seções do CDROM. Foram atribuídos notas de zero a dez em cada seção do questionário, considerando-se zero como totalmente alterado e dez inalterado, uma vez que o termo inalterado significa que a tradução manteve o objetivo do material original. Para a apresentação dos resultados, foi calculada a média ± desvio-padrão das notas atribuídas pelos dez especialistas. Além disso, a versão traduzida também foi avaliada pelos especialistas com relação à capacidade de reproduzir as habilidades e competências educacionais do material em língua portuguesa para a língua inglesa americana. O valor do Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse (CCI) para os dez avaliadores foi de 0,73, que corresponde a um nível satisfatório de coincidência de respostas entre os diferentes avaliadores. Em relação às notas atribuídas pela banca de dez especialistas, estas variaram de 8,8±0,91 a 9,9±0,31, com média e o desvio-padrão de 9,6±0,30, o que sugere qualidade muito boa da versão consenso. Ao final da avaliação da tradução pela banca de especialistas, os responsáveis pela pesquisa ponderaram as modificações sugeridas e realizaram uma revisão final de todo o conteúdo, para que, assim, a versão final fosse obtida e apresentada ao final deste trabalho. Em suma, foi confirmada nossa hipótese de que seria possível realizar a tradução transcultural e adaptação para a língua inglesa americana do CDROM Voz: Fonoaudiologia e medicina, volume 1, do Projeto Homem Virtual.<br>The Virtual Man Project\'s CD-ROM \"Voice Assessment: Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology & Medicine\", Vol.1, has been used as a courseware on regular and on distance education as well as a therapeutic strategy in clinical practice. There is also the possibility of using it as a second language learning tool. Therefore, this research was conducted with the assumption that it is possible to perform the cross-cultural translation of this CD-ROM into the English language. The aims of this study were to a) update the courseware version in Portuguese, b) translate and adapt the updated content of the Portuguese version into an English version as well as c) evaluate the content of the cross-cultural version and the reproductive capacity of the objectives and competences of the educational material in English. Considering international studies, this study used a methodology that includes the translation made by a translator, a back translation made by a second translator and a consensus version made by a third party translator. This consensus version was submitted to a committee of specialists composed by Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, Dentists, Translators and English teachers for evaluation. Each specialist filled out two questionnaires covering the relevance of the concepts, the meanings and the equivalence between the language pair of all sections of the CD-ROM. The grades ranged from zero to ten in every section considering zero as unchanged and ten as totally changed. For the presentation of the results, mean and standard deviations were calculated for all the grades given by the specialists. In addition, the cross-cultural translation was also evaluated concerning the ability to transcribe educational skills and competences of the material in the Portuguese language into the English language. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) for the ten evaluators was 0.73, which corresponds to a satisfactory level of coincidence of responses between different raters. The grades ranged from 8.8±0.91 to 9.9±0.31 with mean and standard deviation of 9.6±0.30, suggesting a very good quality of the consensus version. At the end of the evaluation of the cross-cultural translation by the committee of specialists, a final version was obtained. In conclusion, our hypothesis that it would be possible to perform the cross-cultural translation and adaptation to the American English the Virtual Man Projects CD-ROM \"Voice Assessment: Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology & Medicine was confirmed.

Abstract:

L’objectif principal de ce travail de thèse est de développer un modèle thermodynamique de type équation d’état cubique, permettant de prédire avec un maximum de précision les propriétés thermodynamiques des corps purs (des comportements de phases aux propriétés énergétiques - enthalpie, capacité calorifique - en incluant les propriétés volumiques) et des mélanges (équilibres de phases dans les régions sub- et supercritiques, points critiques, propriétés énergétiques, densités …), y compris les plus complexes. Concernant les corps purs tout d’abord : en nous appuyant sur la connaissance acquise par les études publiées pendant près d’un siècle et demi sur les équations d’état cubiques, nous avons identifié deux leviers pour accroître la précision de ces modèles. Le premier concerne la sélection d’une fonction α optimale (cette fonction est une quantité clef apparaissant dans le terme attractif du modèle) dont le bon paramétrage permet de représenter précisément les propriétés à saturation des corps purs, telles que la pression de saturation, l’enthalpie de vaporisation et la capacité calorifique du liquide à saturation. Afin que la fonction α puisse être extrapolée au domaine des hautes températures, nous avons défini les contraintes mathématiques que celle-ci doit respecter. Le second levier est le paramètre de translation volumique, paramètre clef pour la bonne représentation des densités liquides. Ces réflexions et les études associées sont à la base du développement des modèles tc-RK et tc-PR, utilisant une fonction α extrapolable à haute température ainsi qu’un paramètre de translation volumique, garantissant une précision jusqu’alors inégalée des propriétés sub- et supercritiques des corps purs prédites par des équations d’état cubiques. Afin d’étendre les modèles tc-RK et tc-PR aux mélanges, il a été nécessaire de développer des règles de mélange appropriées pour deux paramètres de l’équation d’état des mélanges : le covolume et le paramètre attractif. Des règles de mélanges récemment proposées qui combinent équation d’état et modèle de coefficient d’activité ont été adoptées. Les valeurs optimales des paramètres universels de ces règles de mélange ont été identifiées dans le cadre de cette thèse. Une règle de mélange linéaire pour le paramètre de translation volumique du mélange a été sélectionnée ; il a été prouvé que cette règle de mélange garantit l’invariance des propriétés d’équilibre de phases et des propriétés énergétiques entre les modèles translatés et non translatés. Afin de définir le modèle de coefficient d’activité optimal à intégrer dans la nouvelle règle de mélange, une base de données de 200 systèmes binaires a été développée. Ces systèmes binaires ont été sélectionnés afin d’être représentatifs des différents types d’interactions qui peuvent exister dans les mélanges non électrolytiques. La base de données accorde une place significative aux systèmes dits associés, qui sont certainement parmi les plus difficiles à modéliser par une équation d’état. In fine, cette thèse pose toutes les bases du développement d’une équation d’état cubique des mélanges. Le choix du modèle de coefficient d’activité optimal, la détermination des paramètres d’interactions binaires des 200 systèmes de la base de données et leur prédiction constituent des suites possibles de ce travail<br>The main objective of this thesis work is to develop a cubic equation of state thermodynamic model able to accurately predict the thermodynamic properties of pure compounds (from phase equilibrium data to energetic properties – enthalpy, heat capacity – and volume properties) and mixtures (phase equilibria in sub- and supercritical regions, critical points, energetic properties, densities…), including the most complex ones. Starting with pure compounds: relying on the knowledge collected all through the years from Van der Waals seminal work about cubic equations of state, we identified two levers to increase cubic-model accuracy. First is the selection of the optimal α function (this function is a key quantity involved in the model attractive term) the proper parameterization of which entails an accurate representation of pure-compound saturation properties such as saturation pressure, enthalpy of vaporization, saturated-liquid heat capacity. In order to safely extrapolate an α functions to the high temperature domain, we defined the mathematical constraints that it should satisfy. The second lever is the volume translation parameter, a key parameter for an accurate description of liquid densities. These studies led to the development of the tc-PR and tc-RK models, using an α function that correctly extrapolates to the high temperature domain so as a volume translation parameter, ensuring the most accurate estimations of pure-compound sub- and supercritical property from a cubic equation of state. In order to extend the tc-PR and tc-RK models to mixtures, it was necessary to develop adequate mixing rules for both equation of state parameters: the covolume and the attractive parameter. Recently proposed mixing rules combining an equation of state and an activity coefficient model have been retained. Optimal values of the mixing rules universal parameters have been identified in the framework of this thesis. A linear mixing rule for the volume translation parameter has been selected; it has been proven that this mixing rule does not change the phase equilibrium and energetic properties when switching from a translated to an untranslated model. In order to define the optimal activity coefficient model to include in the new mixing rule, a 200 binary-system database has been developed. These binary systems have been selected to be representative of the different kinds of interactions that can exist in non-electrolytic mixtures. The database includes in particular systems containing associating compounds, which are certainly among the most difficult ones to model with an equation of state. In fine, this thesis sets all the bases for the development of a cubic equation of state for mixtures. The selection of the optimal activity-coefficient model, the estimation of binary interaction parameters for the 200 binary systems from the database and their prediction are possible continuations of this work

Abstract:

This thesis comprises a novel, Genie and Paul, and a critical commentary which posits Genie and Paul as a ‘translation’ of J. J. H. Bernadin de Saint-Pierre’s, Paul et Virginie, an eighteenth-century French novel set in colonial Mauritius. Genie and Paul explores its British Mauritian protagonists’ complex sense of cultural identity, with reference to Paul et Virginie, a novel of great personal significance to me. In my critical commentary, I explore the ways in which my novel creatively engages with Paul et Virginie, and make a case for using the term ‘translation’ to define my rewriting of it, with reference to the growing body of postcolonial literary translation theory. I examine the significance of Paul et Virginie to the development of my identity as a writer, and argue that my ‘translation’ is an effective method of negotiating my complex relationship both to Mauritius, and to the European literary canon. I contextualise this discussion by looking at writers who share a similarly equivocal relationship with their cultural background, chiefly V.S. Naipaul and Pankaj Mishra. I consider how these writers’ backgrounds inflect their respective relationships with literary tradition, and examine the strategies they have employed to negotiate this. Whereas Naipaul has been initially reluctant to admit to literary influences, Mishra overtly acknowledges his in The Romantics, his autobiographical first novel. I show how this novel is a ‘translation’ of a key text in Mishra’s personal canon, Flaubert’s A Sentimental Education, and I use this discussion as a model for the analysis of my own ‘translation’ of Paul et Virginie.

L’objectif principal de ce travail de thèse est de développer un modèle thermodynamique de type équation d’état cubique, permettant de prédire avec un maximum de précision les propriétés thermodynamiques des corps purs (des comportements de phases aux propriétés énergétiques - enthalpie, capacité calorifique - en incluant les propriétés volumiques) et des mélanges (équilibres de phases dans les régions sub- et supercritiques, points critiques, propriétés énergétiques, densités …), y compris les plus complexes. Concernant les corps purs tout d’abord : en nous appuyant sur la connaissance acquise par les études publiées pendant près d’un siècle et demi sur les équations d’état cubiques, nous avons identifié deux leviers pour accroître la précision de ces modèles. Le premier concerne la sélection d’une fonction α optimale (cette fonction est une quantité clef apparaissant dans le terme attractif du modèle) dont le bon paramétrage permet de représenter précisément les propriétés à saturation des corps purs, telles que la pression de saturation, l’enthalpie de vaporisation et la capacité calorifique du liquide à saturation. Afin que la fonction α puisse être extrapolée au domaine des hautes températures, nous avons défini les contraintes mathématiques que celle-ci doit respecter. Le second levier est le paramètre de translation volumique, paramètre clef pour la bonne représentation des densités liquides. Ces réflexions et les études associées sont à la base du développement des modèles tc-RK et tc-PR, utilisant une fonction α extrapolable à haute température ainsi qu’un paramètre de translation volumique, garantissant une précision jusqu’alors inégalée des propriétés sub- et supercritiques des corps purs prédites par des équations d’état cubiques. Afin d’étendre les modèles tc-RK et tc-PR aux mélanges, il a été nécessaire de développer des règles de mélange appropriées pour deux paramètres de l’équation d’état des mélanges : le covolume et le paramètre attractif. Des règles de mélanges récemment proposées qui combinent équation d’état et modèle de coefficient d’activité ont été adoptées. Les valeurs optimales des paramètres universels de ces règles de mélange ont été identifiées dans le cadre de cette thèse. Une règle de mélange linéaire pour le paramètre de translation volumique du mélange a été sélectionnée ; il a été prouvé que cette règle de mélange garantit l’invariance des propriétés d’équilibre de phases et des propriétés énergétiques entre les modèles translatés et non translatés. Afin de définir le modèle de coefficient d’activité optimal à intégrer dans la nouvelle règle de mélange, une base de données de 200 systèmes binaires a été développée. Ces systèmes binaires ont été sélectionnés afin d’être représentatifs des différents types d’interactions qui peuvent exister dans les mélanges non électrolytiques. La base de données accorde une place significative aux systèmes dits associés, qui sont certainement parmi les plus difficiles à modéliser par une équation d’état. In fine, cette thèse pose toutes les bases du développement d’une équation d’état cubique des mélanges. Le choix du modèle de coefficient d’activité optimal, la détermination des paramètres d’interactions binaires des 200 systèmes de la base de données et leur prédiction constituent des suites possibles de ce travail<br>The main objective of this thesis work is to develop a cubic equation of state thermodynamic model able to accurately predict the thermodynamic properties of pure compounds (from phase equilibrium data to energetic properties – enthalpy, heat capacity – and volume properties) and mixtures (phase equilibria in sub- and supercritical regions, critical points, energetic properties, densities…), including the most complex ones. Starting with pure compounds: relying on the knowledge collected all through the years from Van der Waals seminal work about cubic equations of state, we identified two levers to increase cubic-model accuracy. First is the selection of the optimal α function (this function is a key quantity involved in the model attractive term) the proper parameterization of which entails an accurate representation of pure-compound saturation properties such as saturation pressure, enthalpy of vaporization, saturated-liquid heat capacity. In order to safely extrapolate an α functions to the high temperature domain, we defined the mathematical constraints that it should satisfy. The second lever is the volume translation parameter, a key parameter for an accurate description of liquid densities. These studies led to the development of the tc-PR and tc-RK models, using an α function that correctly extrapolates to the high temperature domain so as a volume translation parameter, ensuring the most accurate estimations of pure-compound sub- and supercritical property from a cubic equation of state. In order to extend the tc-PR and tc-RK models to mixtures, it was necessary to develop adequate mixing rules for both equation of state parameters: the covolume and the attractive parameter. Recently proposed mixing rules combining an equation of state and an activity coefficient model have been retained. Optimal values of the mixing rules universal parameters have been identified in the framework of this thesis. A linear mixing rule for the volume translation parameter has been selected; it has been proven that this mixing rule does not change the phase equilibrium and energetic properties when switching from a translated to an untranslated model. In order to define the optimal activity coefficient model to include in the new mixing rule, a 200 binary-system database has been developed. These binary systems have been selected to be representative of the different kinds of interactions that can exist in non-electrolytic mixtures. The database includes in particular systems containing associating compounds, which are certainly among the most difficult ones to model with an equation of state. In fine, this thesis sets all the bases for the development of a cubic equation of state for mixtures. The selection of the optimal activity-coefficient model, the estimation of binary interaction parameters for the 200 binary systems from the database and their prediction are possible continuations of this work

Background Right ventricular (RV) diastolic function has been associated with outcomes for patients with pulmonary hypertension; however, the relationship between biomechanics and hemodynamics in the right ventricle has not been studied. Methods and Results Rat models of RV pressure overload were obtained via pulmonary artery banding (PAB; control, n=7; PAB, n=5). At 3 weeks after banding, RV hemodynamics were measured using a conductance catheter. Biaxial mechanical properties of the RV free wall myocardium were obtained to extrapolate longitudinal and circumferential elastic modulus in low and high strain regions (E-1 and E-2, respectively). Hemodynamic analysis revealed significantly increased end-diastolic elastance (E-ed) in PAB (control: 55.1 mm Hg/mL [interquartile range: 44.785.4 mm Hg/mL]; PAB: 146.6 mm Hg/mL [interquartile range: 105.8155.0 mm Hg/mL]; P=0.010). Longitudinal E1 was increased in PAB (control: 7.2 kPa [interquartile range: 6.718.1 kPa]; PAB: 34.2 kPa [interquartile range: 18.144.6 kPa]; P=0.018), whereas there were no significant changes in longitudinal E-2 or circumferential E-1 and E-2. Last, wall stress was calculated from hemodynamic data by modeling the right ventricle as a sphere: (stress = Pressure x radius/2 x thickness Conclusions RV pressure overload in PAB rats resulted in an increase in diastolic myocardial stiffness reflected both hemodynamically, by an increase in E-ed, and biomechanically, by an increase in longitudinal E-1. Modest increases in tissue biomechanical stiffness are associated with large increases in E-ed. Hemodynamic measurements of RV diastolic function can be used to predict biomechanical changes in the myocardium.

Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Mūsā b. Muḥammad al-Lakhmī al-Shāṭibī al-Gharnāṭī – „al-Shāṭibī‟ – was a fourteenth century Granadan Mālikī religio-legal theorist and jurisconsult. His best known work – al-Muwāfaqāt fī uṣūl al-sharīʽa – proposed a significant reinterpretation of religio-legal epistemology and hermeneutics emphasizing a holistic reading of scripture focusing on the divine purposes [maqāṣid] underlying specific ethico-legal rulings. Although barely noticed over several centuries, Shāṭibī‟s work has, in the last century, gained the attention of Islamic religio-legal reformers, who see in it an anticipation of their project. Al-Muwāfaqāt, Shāṭibī‟s attempt to identify and analyze the fundamental principles of religious jurisprudence, is divided into five volumes – Premises, Religio-legal Categories, Purposes of the Divine Law, Legal Indicants, and Jurisprudential Expertise. The first volume articulates and defends the vii thirteen premises [muqaddamāt] that form the basis for Shāṭibī‟s theory of religious law. This thesis comprises a translation and analysis of that first volume. The translation is generously supplemented by bracketed syntactic and referential glosses to facilitate comprehension and readability. The analytical commentary attempts to provide some clarification of the gist of the argument as well as modest interpretation.
