Abstract:
Although silt and clay mixtures were mostly considered to be resistant to cyclic loading due to cohesional components of their shear strength, ground failure case histories compiled from fine grained soil profiles after recent earthquakes (e.g. 1994 Northridge, 1999 Adapazari, 1999 Chi-Chi) revealed that the responses of low plasticity silt and clay mixtures are also critical under cyclic loading. Consequently, understanding the cyclic response of these soils has become a recent challenge in geotechnical earthquake engineering practice. While most of the current attention focuses on the assess

<p> Intramuscular pressure (IMP), which is closely correlated with both active and passive muscle tension, may become a useful supplement to current clinical tools as a means to quantify individual muscle-generated force. A continuing challenge associated with this measure is its non-uniform distribution, which is not yet fully understood. Several studies have observed that pressure increases with muscle depth. Conservation of mass suggests that these regional pressure differences may result from non-uniformly distributed changes in local tissue volume. Therefore, the overarching goal of this

The strain rate dependent behaviour of fine grained soils is an important aspect of geotechnical engineering. During dynamic or rapid events such as earthquakes and rapid pile testing, a fine grained soil will display significantly different behaviour than may be observed over the long life span of a structure. There is currently little understanding of the factors which influence the behaviour of fine grained soils during dynamic events (extremely high strain rates), making their response difficult to predict. This research investigates the behaviour of fine grained soils subjected to a wide

Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is the gold standard imaging technique for assessment of ventricular dimensions and function. CMR also allows assessment of ventricular deformation but this requires additional imaging sequences and time consuming post processing which has limited its widespread use. A novel CMR analysis software package, ‘feature tracking’ (Tom Tec, Germany) can measure ventricular deformation directly from cine CMR images. This thesis seeks to further our understanding of the feasibility of feature tracking to assess myocardial deformation and volumetric measures. Cha

Abstract:
Liquefaction is a costly phenomenon where soil shear modulus degrades as the generation of excess pore pressures begins. One of the methods to mitigate liquefaction, is the use of prefabricated vertical drains. Prefabricated vertical drains provide a drainage path to effectively mitigate the generation of pore pressures and aid in shear modulus recovery. The aims of this study were to define shear modulus degradation vs. shear strain as a function of excess pore pressure ratio; define the effects of prefabricated vertical drains on the behavior of pore pressure generation vs. shear strain; and

After shaking, the excess pore water pressure in the saturated sand layer dissipates with time, and the volume of the sand layer decreases and settlement occurs. In 1999, Chi-Chi Earthquake caused liquefaction in many areas with sandy soil layer in mid-Taiwan, for example, Taichung Seaport, Yuanlin, Wufeng and Nantou area.
