Abstract:
Introduction. Voluntary anonymous HIV counseling and testing can be an effective tool to reduce the behavior that has high risks of HIV, hepatitis C (HCV) and B (HBV) transmission. The dissemination of general information on HIV, HCV, HBV to reduce risky behavior is not as much of importance as counseling on specific individual infection-related sexual risk behavior. The objective was to identify HIV/HCV/HBV-related risk factors that have to be discussed during psychosocial counselingto help the individual to focus on his/her sexual risk behavior. Methods and materials. The study was conducted on the base of Saint-Petersburg Center for Control of AIDS with participation of 90 individuals who voluntary applied for HIV counseling and testing. Participants’ behavioral risks and HIV knowledge were assessed by the specifically developed structured questionnaire. The level of anxiety was measured by State-Train Anxiety Inventory (STAI adapted by Hanin), the level of need for extreme-risk behavior was measured by the Sensation Seeking Scale (Zuckerman).Results. Only 50 % of participants use condom with their steady sexual partner always or almost always. In 62 % cases, the steady sexual partner’s HIV-status is unknown. Many participants agree that HIV transmission occurs always after sexual contact with HIV-infected person. The level of situational anxiety is higher by those who do HIV testing repeatedly. Those who are more likely to seek new sensations use condom with their steady or other partner more often.Conclusion. Motivational intervention during pre- and post-counseling by HIV/HCV/HBV testing has to focus on the discussion of individual difficulties of condom use as the means for protection and on the individual’s resources for changing sexual behavior to protect him/her-self and his/her partner from infection with HIV and viral hepatitis.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: Voluntary HIV counseling and testing are provided to all Brazilian pregnant women with the purpose of reducing mother-to-child HIV transmission. The purpose of the study was to assess characteristics of HIV testing and identify factors associated with HIV counseling and testing. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out comprising 1,658 mothers living in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Biological, reproductive and social variables were obtained from mothers by means of a standardized questionnaire. Being counseling about HIV testing was the dependent variable. Confidence intervals, chi-square test and hierarchical logistic model were used to determine the association between counseling and maternal variables. RESULTS: Of 1,658 mothers interviewed, 1,603 or 96.7% (95% CI: 95.7-97.5) underwent HIV testing, and 51 or 3.1% (95% CI: 2.3-4.0) were not tested. Four (0.2%) refused to undergo testing after counseling. Of 51 women not tested in this study, 30 had undergone the testing previously. Of 1,603 women tested, 630 or 39.3% (95% CI: 36.9-41.7) received counseling, 947 or 59.2% (95% CI: 56.6-61.5) did not, and 26 (1.6%) did not inform. Low income, lack of prenatal care, late beginning of prenatal care, use of rapid testing, and receiving prenatal in the public sector were variables independently associated with a lower probability of getting counseling about HIV testing. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings confirmed the high rate of prenatal HIV testing in Porto Alegre. However, women coming from less privileged social groups were less likely to receive information and benefit from counseling.

Abstract:
Background: Treponema pallidum and HIV are among the most common public health problems in Ethiopia. These infections are interrelated. Treponema pallidum causes genital ulcer which enhances HIV transmission and complicates HIV by causing severe ulcer among HIV-positive individuals. Although Treponema pallidum and HIV have a similar route of transmission, screening services for Treponema pallidum are not available in most of the voluntary counseling and testing centers. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of Treponema pallidum and sociodemographic factors among HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals from the voluntary counseling and testing center of St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: In this research, a cross-sectional study was conducted and a total of 292 consecutive samples were collected from the voluntary counseling and testing center of St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. A blood specimen was tested for the presence of Treponema pallidum using rapid plasma reagin and a rapid test kit for HIV. The data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results: The overall prevalence of Treponema pallidum was 5/292 (1.7%). All HIV-positive clients were negative for Treponema pallidum. None of the risk factors were significantly associated with Treponema pallidum. Conclusion: In this study, the prevalence of Treponema pallidum was 5/292 (1.7%). None of the study participants were co-infected with Treponema pallidum and HIV. Recommendation: There was a lack of association between syphilis and HIV in this study, but still the prevalence of Treponema pallidum among voluntary counseling and testing center clients is a public health problem. Therefore, Treponema pallidum infection control strategies should be designed in parallel with HIV control strategy and actions should be taken to avert the problem, including the provision of better health education and screening services at voluntary counseling and testing centers parallel with HIV.

Abstract:
HIV testing and counselling is crucial in identifying new HIV cases and linking them to treatment. Provider-initiated testing and counselling can help to increase uptake of HIV testing and counselling and HIV case detection. We implemented provider-initiated testing and counselling in 32 health facilities in Ebonyi State, South-East Nigeria in order to achieve both objectives. Provider-initiated testing and counselling was implemented across the 32 facilities from January to June 2016. Provider-initiated testing and counselling data were compared with the preceding six months (July–December 2015) when only voluntary counselling and testing was done. A total of 11,787 out of 22,153 who visited the outpatient clinics within the intervention period (53%) were tested. In the preceding six months, only 3172 clients were tested via voluntary counselling and testing out of 50,898 clients who visited the outpatient clinics (6.2%). This was a 3.72-fold increase over the numbers tested via voluntary counselling and testing, within a similar time frame. Also, 158 new cases were diagnosed during the period from provider-initiated testing and counselling compared to 24 from voluntary counselling and testing in the preceding six months – an increase of 4.65-fold in case detection. Apart from the 11,787 tested through provider-initiated testing and counselling, another 6999 clients were tested through community-based outreaches during the intervention period. Comparison of case detection between both strategies shows that provider-initiated testing and counselling accounted for 158 cases (97%) while outreaches accounted for only five cases (3%). Provider-initiated testing and counselling led to an increase in uptake of HIV testing and counselling services as well as in HIV case detection across the 32 facilities where our programme was implemented.

Abstract:
Introduction/Aim: Voluntary and confidential counseling and testing (VCCT) means getting information about HIV, ways of transmission, recognizing, reducing or avoiding risks for HIV infection, about safe sexual relations, the place where people can be tested, and what they should do depending on the test results in order to protect themselves and other people. The aim of this study was to examine differences in demographic characteristics, risky behavior and HIV status between men and women who were voluntarily and confidentially counseled and tested at the Counseling Center for HIV/AIDS of the Institute of Public Health in Belgrade. Methods: This research was conducted as a cross-sectional study and it included 3,480 persons (43.2% of women and 56.8% of men), who were counseled and tested at the Counseling Center for HIV/AIDS of the Institute of Public Health in Belgrade from 2017 to 2019. ch2 or Fisher's test was used for the statistical analysis of data. Results: The majority of women (42.1%) and men (42.5%) who were counseled and tested were in the age group 21-30 years. Men used DPST services significantly more often than women. HIV positive status was significantly more frequent in men (2.5%) than in women (0.3%). Women came significantly more often to voluntary counseling and testing due to the possible exposure to HIV infection by heterosexual contact (84.9%), accident (11.1%) and raping (1.0%), while men were counseled and tested due to heterosexual contact (59.3%), homosexual and bisexual contact (33.6%) and intravenous drug abuse (1.1%). Men used condoms always or often (40.1%) and had two or more partners (53.2%) more frequently during the last 12 months in comparison to women (24.2% and 20.6%). Conclusion: Voluntary and confidential counseling and testing is necessary in the fight against HIV infection, especially from the perspective of early discovering of people with this infection and education of HIV negative persons about risky sexual behavior and possible prevention measures.

Abstract:
Background: The study focused on perceptions and experiences of pregnant women who opted in against those who opted out of voluntary antenatal HIV counseling and testing.Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess pregnant women’s perceptions and experiences in order to gain insight into their views towards voluntary antenatal counseling and testing.Method: A qualitative, descriptive and comparative study was used regarding participants who opted in and opted out. A stratified random sampling was used to collect data from the participants. The study sample comprised six focus group discussions (FGD) of pregnant women who were attending antenatal services at this hospital. Three FGD were women who opted in and other three FGD were for those who opted out. The semi-structure interview guide was used to guide the discussions. The discussions were audio recorded, transcribed and analyzed, using thematic content analysis. Results: Based on the findings of the study, the knowledge of pregnant women who opted in was relatively good comparing with those who opted out. Despite the recognition of the benefits of Voluntary antenatal Counselling and Testing (VCT), it was evident that women were reluctant to use the VCT service because of reasons that include fear of being stigmatized, abandoned and discriminated against. The women’s participation in the existing services of voluntary antenatal counseling and testing was influenced by their partners. It was also found that there were misconceptions surrounding the knowledge of the causes and prevention of vertical transmission. These misconceptions should be talked about. The distance was another factor which hampered the participation of pregnant women in the programme. Other reasons for non-attendance given by the participants included dissatisfaction with some of the nurses’ attitudes, ignorance about the service as well as reluctance to be tested.Recommendations: This study recommends improved partner communication on the issues of HIV/AIDS as it will encourage sharing of confidentiality and responsibility.

Abstract:
Voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) service plays an essential part in the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of participants and analyze the major factors of HIV infection in VCT in Nantong, China. This study was conducted between January 2010 and December 2015, based on the responses to questionnaires and blood test results retrieved from the Chinese National HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Control Information System (CNHCCIS). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors related to HIV infection. Differences between first-time testers and repeat testers were assessed using the chi-squared or Fisher test. Over six years, a total of 11,560 VCT participants were included, and 420 cases were confirmed to be HIV-positive. Overall, the annual number of participants was relatively stable with a mean of 1927, while there was a rapid increase in the HIV detection rate (from 1.03% in 2010 to 7.52% in 2015). In multivariate analysis, referral counseling and having a HIV-positive spouse/fixed sex partners were found to be significantly associated with HIV infection among all participants, while being unmarried or divorced, having commercial heterosexual behaviors, and male-male sexual behaviors are additional HIV-related factors for males. Compared to first-time testers, repeat testers were more willing to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors and had higher HIV detection rates ( P < 0.001 ). In conclusion, the HIV epidemic in Nantong is still not controlled. Therefore, in the future, it is critical to expand VCT services to increase the detection rate of HIV, which can prevent the transmission of HIV effectively.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) services provide an importatnt start to HIV/AIDS prevention and care. The literature showed that the uptake of VCT is very low, and it is affected by many factors among university students, which are considered as high-risk group for HIV/AIDS infection. Objective: The objective of this study is to identify the factors that affect the uptake of voluntary counseling and testing among the undergraduate students. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among the undergraduate students from the faculty of sciences at the Khartoum university with a sample size of 192. The students were selected by systematic random technique. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection, and data were entered and analyzed by using the SPSS (computer program). IRB approval was obtained from the University of Science and Technology, and informed consent was taken from all participants. Results: A total of 192 students participated in this study 107 (55.7%) male and 85 (44.3%) female. Out of these, 100 (52.1%) were in the age group of 15-20, while 92 (47.9%) were in the age group of 21-25. Regarding the knowledge about VCT; 149 (78%) students had good knowledge. The study revealed that about 17 (9%) of the students took the HIV test, and 118 (62%) expressed their willingness to uptake VCT in the future. Reasons that hindered HIV testing during this study include: 1) Some students did not consider themselves at risk (84 i.e. 44%), some students did not know the place where the test is provided (74 i.e. 38.%), some of them did not hear about VCT (32 i.e. 17%) and some were afraid of the test results (17 i.e. 32%). The study found that VCT uptake is positively associated with age, sexual intercourse, and considering themselves self at risk of HIV infection (p=0.05,0.00.0.03 respectively). Moreover, the study also found an association between willingness to uptake VCT in the future with sexual intercourse and considering themselves at risk of HIV of HIV infection (p = 0.03, 0.00 respectively). Conclusion: The uptake of VCT is very low among university students, and it is associated with age and risk perception and sexual intercourse. The most important factors include not considering themselves at risk or not knowing the place of testing or no knowledge about the test or the fear of being positive. On the other hand, willingness to uptake the test was considerably high.

Abstract:

Abstract:
New York State's prison population has the highest seroprevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among incarcerated populations in the United States. Five percent of the State prison inmate population is female. To date there have been few studies of incarcerated females in New York State (NYS). Seroprevalence rates have ranged from 18.9% to as high as 29%. In 1991, counselors from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) AIDS Institute's Criminal Justice Initiative, in collaboration with the State's Department of Correctional Services (NYSDOCS), began to offer educational services and anonymous pretest counseling, HIV antibody testing, and posttest counseling to NYS female prisoners. With preliminary program testing data (N = 216) descriptive and multivariate techniques are used to evaluate the demographic and risk-related behaviors associated with HIV infection among female inmates in this voluntary HIV testing program. Results are discussed in light of previous research findings regarding the correlates of HIV seropositivity among New York State prison inmates and compared to previous blinded epidemiological studies of female inmates in the State. Future research, addressing the limitations of this preliminary study, is proposed.
