Thesis (M Social Work (Social Work))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
The welfare of communities depends to a large extent on the successful mobilisation of the voluntary contributions (manpower, time, money) by religious based organisations. Poverty and all the other social problems like unemployment and HIV/AIDS, that are associated with it, can only be addressed effectively if volunteers are empowered by social workers to handle the problems in a sustaining way (Annual report, Unit for Religion Development Research: 2002). In order to empower the volunteers, it is important that s

Volunteers are necessary for the economy and impact the community by helping non-profit organizations provide services to those in need. The need for productive volunteers is growing and will likely continue to grow amidst nation-wide budget cuts. Finding practical, low-cost strategies to facilitate engagement within volunteer workforces is the next step in addressing how non-profit organizations can alleviate the volunteer shortage. Following social exchange theory and reciprocity norms, I propose that volunteer meetings are an avenue through which exchange relationships between organizat

This research has developed a research relationship model for understanding the relationship between volunteer management practice correlates and volunteer retention using volunteer motivation and volunteer satisfaction as mediators. The model uses social exchange theory, human resource management theory, volunteer functional inventory and volunteer satisfaction index as part of the theoretical underpinning for its validation and contributed to gain knowledge on the application of management theory widely used in the for-profit organisations to the non-profit and volunteer dependent sectors.

This thesis examines the impact of positive and negative recognition on future willingness to volunteer. Through extensive background research and a survey of nearly 400 college students, this study aimed to answer two main research questions: 1) Does publicizing individual acts of volunteering effect future volunteering within an organization? 2) Is there any significant difference between the impact of positive recognition and negative recognition on future volunteering efforts? Through this research it was determined that both positive and negative recognition improve volunteering participa
