Full textSteel concrete structures are a new building technology and its use starts to spread in civil engineering. these structures are made of two steel plates connected by tiebars and a concrete core. In order to provide resistance, steel and concrete must develop composite actions. In case of buckling of the steel plate, the transfer of the actions between steel and concrete is lost. This paper focus on preventing buckling failure’s mode of the structure in case of thermal loading. Two main issues are studied : defining an analytic operating for steel concrete structures regarding thermal buckling aspect including yielding coupling and getting an analytic estimation of the deflection. The results are finally confronted with numerical simulation and experimentation

Full textThis dissertation tries a novel approach of statistical mechanics (at and out of equilibrium) to understand the behaviour of a fully turbulent confined flow --- von Karman flow --- stirred by two counter-rotating impellers in a cylinder vessel. First, experimental results from speed control are extended using new PIV observations: the susceptibility divergence of the flow is studied similarly to a mean-field Ising model, for which the spatial correlations and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem are examined. Second, additional experimental results obtained in torque control are also detailed, revealing negative differential responses allowing an analogy with other out-of-equilibrium experiments such as electrical dipoles or complex fluids. These results are understood in the framework of ensemble inequivalence, typical of long-range interacting systems. In addition, escape times from attracting states in multi-stable experiments display a Kramers-like simple dynamics, as do systems with few degrees of freedom. Finally, preliminary results from the SHREK experiment are shown: torques measured in normal and superfluid liquid helium exhibit similar results. Moreover, the Reynolds number range achieved in this experiment allows a more thorough study of the evolution of the hysteresis cycle already studied for lower Reynolds numbers

Full textA main objective of this thesis is the physical analysis by solving the Navier-Stokes equations of flows around an airfoil at zero incidence for a viscous compressible fluid in the subsonic and transonic regimes. For Mach numbers 0. 2-0. 4 and Reynolds 104 we have analysed the evolution of the von Kármán instability by means of the Landau model with use of Mach number as parameter. This instability is found to be triggered by the compressibility effect. This study allowed the evaluation of the critical Mach number for the appearance of this instability. The second part of the study consists of the development of a numerical code for the prediction of the fluid domain motion following the dynamic mesh variation. The pitching irfoils flows studied show a good agreement with the other studies. This work is a first step towards a fluid-structure interaction code

Full textThe Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and its mechanism can be observed when a flow velocity field has an inflexion point, or at the interface between two flows with different velocities. This phenomenon has been widely investigated during the past century, but very few studies have explored it in a confined geometry, where the instability development is limited, or in a closed geometry, where it cannot be advected. We partially dragged the central surface of a rectangular tank filled with water, using a tape or a rope. Depending on the experiment parameters, the flow showed different patterns. At the slowest velocities, the free surfàce on the lateral sides of the tape is dragged in the tape direction and the fluid recirculation occurs mostly at the bottom of the tank. For faster velocities, this recirculation becomes mostly lateral, while the fluid under the belt is dragged. Then, the shear between these two flows leads to a Kelvin-Helmholtz¬like instability. Under some conditions, the vortices developing on each side of the belt can be coupled and a stable vortex street can appear. It has been shown that the only parameter that has an influence on the geometric properties of the street is the lateral confinement of the flow. We observe a confined Bénard-von Kârmân vortex street created without the classic use of a blunt body in a parallel flow. Rosenhead predicted that this street is stabilized by the confinement as that in this case there is a band of stability instead of the classical unique stability condition predicted by von Karman in a plane. Our experiment is one of the first experimental confirmations of the old theoretical prediction of Rosenhead

Full textThis work presents two studies based on the experimental von Karman flow. On the one side, we compare theoritical predictions obtained in the ideal case of a statistical mechanics derived for inviscid force-free axisymmetric flows to Stereoscopic Particule Imaging Velocimetry (SPIV) measurements. We get global relations characterizing the system's steady states and showing a tendency to velocity-vorticity alignement at high Reynolds numbers. On the other side, in the VKS collaboration, we study dynamo action in an unconstrained liquid sodium flow. This effet is an instability which is assumed to be responsible for astrophysic object's magnetic fields, the Earth's one for example. The VKS2 experiment has demonstrated for the first time a dynamo action leading to a wide variety of time-dependent dynamics: steady states, oscillations, intermittency and even randomly switching behaviours close to Earth's magnetic field are presented. We show that these different dynamics can be classified with respect to the experiment's Rossby number. We underline the links existing between hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic bifurcations

Full textThe influence of the shape on the sound emission of cylindrical bluff-bodies is studied. Simulations are performed in two-dimensions (2D) at low-Reynolds number (Re=20-200), with the incompressible direct Navier-Stokes (DNS) solver incompact3D, using the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) formalism; the acoustic emission is evaluated by a single formula derived from Curle’s equation for compact cylinders. In anechoic wind tunnel, the acoustic signature is measured for about 30 geometries, Re=4,000-53,000; hot-wire measurements of the spanwise flow characteristics are performed for a subset of the tested cylinders. The influence of both the shape of the upstream portion of the geometry and the breadth-to-height ratio (AR) are proved to be major features in terms of both the flow and its acoustic emission in 2D. By reducing the strength of the vortices and pushing them downstream and affecting the mechanics of the von Kármán instability (delaying the transition to unsteadiness), stretched shapes (with higher AR) are generally quieter. From the experiments, it is found that the geometries of biggest AR are the loudest, contraposing the results obtained in 2D. The disparity is justified by a significant increase of the spanwise coherence associated with the larger AR’s, practically fully-phased, thus more acoustically efficient. Globally, it is implied that geometries which have weakly perturbed flow in 2D, marked by a later transition to unsteadiness (larger critical Reynolds number), are also more organized in 3D, high-Reynolds number regimes. The underlying relationship between low and high-Reynolds number transitions must be further investigated

Full textCheng, Peng. "Numerical simulations for rain-wind-induced vibration." Thesis, Paris 6, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA066722/document.
Full textA fluid structure instability phenomenon frequently occurs in the subcritical Reynolds regimes multiphase flow system, and rain--wind-induced vibration (RWIV) is taken as an example in civil engineering to characterize the aeroelastic instability caused by fluid-structure interactions. RWIV is hypothesized to be a new type of vibration; regularly accompanied by two significant phenomena: the circumferentially vibrating upper rivulet and the Von Karman vortex shedding frequency shift to a much lower value compared with the convectional evaluation; and customarily observed from the stay cables of cable--stayed bridge. Due to the complicated interactions mechanisms in the liquid-gas-solid system, the mechanism of RWIV has not been thoroughly solved and recognized by the previous researchers. Most have focused on the research topic from the field observation, the analytical dynamic model, and the wind tunnel experiment aspects, but rarely on numerical investigation aspect. To develop a systematic numerical framework, including the separated model, the semi-coupled model, the coupled model, and the multiphase multi-scale model (MMM) distinguished by different ways to simulate the rain effects when RWIV occurs, to establish highly accurate and precise numerical model for RWIV, and to recognize and clarify the mechanism of RWIV, various numerical investigations have been made in this thesis. To simulate the rain effects as an artificial rivulet (fixed/moving solid attaching/oscillating along the circumference of stay cable) when RWIV occurs, the separated method is implemented based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in combination with the monotone integrated large eddy simulation (MILES) to evaluate the sub-grid stress terms. The effects of various artificial rivulet positions along the circumference of stay cable on the vortex shedding structure behind the cable, pressure distribution around the cable, and the aerodynamic force of the cable are analyzed. However, investigations indicate the positions of artificial rivulet along the circumference of cable extremely weakly affect Von Karman vortex shedding frequency near the wake of the cable. To capture the dynamic rainwater morphology evolution, the semi-coupled model simplifies the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the lubrication theory on the assumption that a thin water film surrounding around the cable. The investigations indicate the rainwater gathers at the locations near the separation points, and forms two symmetrical rivulets along the circumference of cable. However, both the circumferentially vibrating upper rivulet and the frequency shift phenomena accompanying RWIV cannot be solved and explained detailedly and clearly. To improve the semi-coupled model on tracking the rainwater morphology evolution, volume-of-fluid (VOF) method combined with incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is employed in the coupled model. Both the high-nonlinear rainwater rivulets evolution along the circumference of cable and the aerodynamic characteristics of stay cable can be obtained and analyzed. The results indicate rainwater rivulet are formed near the separation points along the circumference of cable; the negative pressure zone along the circumference of cable provides a prerequisite for the formation of upper rivulet. However, the computational efficiency is reduced due to the smaller droplets scatter in the surrounding air, furthermore, the assumptions, surrounding the stay cable with the constant volume of rainwater, cannot reflect the real physical conditions (i.e., rain infall process) and cannot obtain the real aerodynamic force from physical aspect

Full textThis thesis aims the investigation of the infeed behaviour of card board material during board pressing process. In addition, the material failure, which is defined as the breaking of the architrave of a pressing, will be examined and quantified in detail. The occurrence of material failure is reconstructed and simulated by using analysis system data. The work of friction, which must be executed during the transport of pressing through the implement, is a significant characteristic to describe that process. Based on that specification, an abstract model to detect defectives by monitoring the system data, is developed. Another focus of investigation is the process of an experimental series, developing the specification of the beard material, which is used as foundation to describe the causation of the material breakdown. Furthermore, a model of quantifying pressing qualities is developed focusing subdivision in dimensional accuracy and the quality of the crinkles
