Abstract:
Abstract The article addresses the question as to whether manorial estates in pre-plague England were responsive to market stimuli, as the authors of a 1993 study have argued based on a model originally proposed by the nineteenth century agricultural economist Johann von Thunen. By testing three hypotheses referring to the degree of commercial orientation, levels of intensity regarding various inputs, and the spatial configuration of field systems, the paper concludes that the productive profiles of these estates did not conform very closely to the expectations of von Thunen’s model. The explanation lies in the fact that, by having access to the seigneurial prerogative of tapping into their peasants’ resources, manorial estates were not hard pressed to maximize profitability through a drive towards efficiency.

Abstract:
O artigo trata sobre a estrutura produtiva na geoeconomia do estado do Tocantins, começa em sua introdução tratando sobre as definições de estrutura produtiva, geoeconomia e fazendo uma breve abordagem sobre o estado. Logo após são definidas as teorias os objetivos, as teorias do desenvolvimento regional e de localização perpassando por Von Thunen, Christaller, Myrdal, North. Passando pela metodologia, buscou-se aplicar assim as teorias, aos dados extraídos do banco de dados RAIS (Relação Anual de Informações Sociais), do MTE (Ministério do Trabalho e Emprego) onde a partir do QL (Quociente Locacional), para serem feitas as análises e conclusões. Pode-se afirmar que a pesquisa cumpriu seus objetivos, foi possível extrair a partir dos dados da RAIS uma amostra do emprego formal tocantinense, contendo 185.121 observações para 2006 e 260.632 para 2016, foi possível estimar um QL confiável da geoeconomia do Tocantins e garantir um alto nível de confiança nas análises.

Abstract:
The aim of thesis is to analyse the economic model of urban residential location through the application of duality methods. Whilst some dual methods have been used in urban economic modelling in the past this paper proposes alternative dual approaches which appear to be novel, but are complimentary to existing approaches to the urban model. As part of the application of dual techniques the paper proposes a method of application which is general enough to be applied to all Von Thunen type models and tests this proposition on the fundamental agrarian model of Von Thunen. As part of the dual analysis of the urban residential model the conditions for the traditional lot size hypothesis are examined in the light of conditional demand functions stemming from the dual analysis. The work also empirically tests the traditional residential lot size hypothesis for various Australian cities. The empirical method adopted involves estimation of density gradients utilising competing non-nested flexible form models and discrimination between these alternative models utilising semi-parametric non-nested tests based on an artificial regression model. Two of the three competing models have not been used in this context before, one of them being completely novel. Moreover, the artificial regression model has not been previously used in this context, requiring some modification to deal with the problem of competing models with dependent variable transformation.

Abstract:
In spite of the descriptive merit of traditional von Thunen model for agricultural land use patterns, the model's sole emphasis on the production side of the economy has not provided a realistic picture of land use and agricultural markets. By reexamining the production-oriented model, it can be shown that parameters in the model are not independent of each other. In order to incorporate the economic mechanism of agricultural markets, a closed version of the von Thunen model is proposed for a three-activity, two-dimensional economy, and equilibrium solutions are generated for prices, land areas, and outputs. The comparison of the two versions of the von Thunen model illustrates an over prediction of land use change in the production-oriented model. The closed model further includes environmental factors for an integrative perspective in agricultural location theory. This approach is extended to consider farmers' decision-making under environmental uncertainty. Farmers' decision-making, reflecting contrasting attitudes towards environmental uncertainty, is developed in three different models, both on the production side and in a closed economy. These are the maximum-expected return model, the guaranteed return model, and the behavioral model. With respect to the production side of the economy, land use is highly subject to climatic variability and crop competition, whereas price variability and stable land use result from the closed economy.

Land is a fundamental input in agricultural production and the factors affecting land prices are an important topic in agricultural economics research. The farmland market has several unique characteristics. Land price volatility can be a source of problems for farmers and investors, especially in periods of falling prices in locations far from markets where the impact of land price reductions is higher than in other locations. This study analyzes land price volatility in different geographical regions of Brazil. The hypothesis is that variation in land price increases with the distance to the market, indicating that land price changes will be more pronounced in areas far from markets and the effects of price cycles in land markets will increase as distance from the market increases. The results obtained in this research support the hypothesis that areas far from end markets are exposed to greater changes in land prices and those same areas are more susceptible to price cycles. The effect on price volatility was also stronger in periods of land price declines. These regions have greater incentives for expansion and investment in periods of land price increase and greater risks of disinvestment and failure in periods of land price contraction. It is difficult to predict when a cycle of expansion or crisis will start or finish, but the present study helps to understand the effects of increases or decreases in land prices when such an event occurs.
