Full textFrom efficient market theory we know that there is no such a thing as a free lunch. If you want higher returns then you also have to take on higher risk. The critical question technical analysis has to answer therefore becomes, does technical analysis (TA) provide an investor with an edge in the stock market? To answer this question empirically data was investigated for the Standard and Poor’s-500 Index for a twenty years time period from 1986 to 2006.
Two different portfolios were constructed. The portfolios were named Hugin with a high time resolution a Munin with a lower time resolution. A simple 30 period MA cross strategy with optimized stop-losses were tested on the two portfolios. The stop-losses were optimized on the first ten years 1986-1996 in order to make the backtesting more realistic.
The conclusion was that neither Hugin nor did Munin produce abnormal returns without the optimized stop losses. When the stop losses were optimized, Hugin but not Munin provided an investor with slightly better return than a long position. However Hugin’s returns were highly sensitive to the assumed level of price slippage and transaction costs. The conclusion to be drawn is therefore that investing based only on a simple 30 periods moving average crossover investment strategy seams not to be the best way to manage hard-earned money.
Dickinson, Christine. "Aspects of Performativity in New Orleans Voodoo." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1600041.
Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the practices and background of Voodoo in New Orleans through a holistic lens. This holistic lens includes researching the history of Voodoo in New Orleans, previous research done on Voodoo practice in New Orleans, contacting current practitioners and performing informal interviews, and participant-observation of New Orleans Voodoo rituals. This work is divided into three sections; the first delves into the history and current state of Voodoo of New Orleans. The second section discusses how Voodoo has influenced other cultural areas in New Orleans. The third section discusses how Voodoo and tourism interrelate with one another. The conclusion of this work addresses how through out history, influences on other areas of New Orleans culture, and tourism, the original ideas of Voodoo in New Orleans has stretched out beyond the original spectacle of Voodoo into the various ways individuals think about Voodoo. This also influences how practitioners view their own practice by reacting to how non-practitioners view Voodoo. It is like the metaphor of the snake eating his own tail, how Voodoo is practiced and then perceived by outsiders keeps feeding into each other.

Full textThis study created a method for measuring the presence of Christian-voodoo syncretism in three Protestant denominations in the north of Haiti. Estimates of voodoo practice among Christians have ranged from 50% to 75%, a;though it is unclear how these percentages were derived. The researcher created a Voodoo-Protestant Scale (VPS), which tests for the presence of fourteen Christian-voodoo syncretistic practices and fifteen Christian-voodoo syncretistic beliefs. The VPS was written and administered in Creole, but the study contains an English translation. A scoring system for the VPS is also explained in Chapter Three, in which four points are counted for "strongly agree" and two points are counted for "agree" responses to syncretistic practice questions (PQs), and two points are counted for "strongly agree" responses and one point is counted for "agree" responses to syncretistic belief questions (BQs). Zero points were counted for "neutral," "disagree" or "strongly disagree." The VPS therefore had scores that ranged from zero to 88. The VPS allowed the researcher to make determinations about the extent of syncretism within the population (the percentage of the participants) as well as the depth of syncretism for each participant (the VPS score itself). The VPS was administered to 218 individuals who attended churches in the Church of God, Baptist, and Evangelical denominations in four urban areas (Milot, Plaine du Nord, Cap-Haitian Petite-Anse and Vaudreuil) and in three rural areas (Grand Bassin, La Jeune, and Maliarette). First, with respect to extent, the researcher discovered that 212 of 218 participants evidenced some syncretism of some kind (97%)—only 6 of 218 showed no trace of Christian-voodoo syncretism. Second, with respect to depth, the researcher discovered that 84 of 218 (39%) evidenced low syncretism (VPS scores from 1-14), 94 of 218 (43%) evidenced intermediate-level syncretism (VPS scores from 15–30), 25 of 218 (11%) evidenced high syncretism (VPS scores from 31–48), and 9 of 218 (4%) evidenced super-high levels (VPS scores from 50–88). Thus, these results offer a more nuanced picture of Christian-voodoo syncretism in Haiti. The study concludes with recommendations for church leaders.

Full textCorn is a cereal that has been domesticated in Mesoamerica. This domestication has enabled social groups to develop a sedentary lifestyle that has favored the concentration of individuals in villages, allowing them to develop other aspects of community life. Later, with trade expansion travels, Europeans discovered that some american plants could be exploited in their new colonies. This triggered the migration of many plants. Corn, which was an easy-to-grow crop with a great ability to adapt to weather conditions and easy to transport, after spreading throughout America, continued its journey to the rest of the world. On this basis we tried to understand how maize was introduced into the Gulf of Guinea and more precisely into the ancient Dahomey. Nowadays, in southern Benin, maize has replaced millet and sorghum. Maize is the most produced and consumed cereal in the south of the country. It also plays a significant role in the religious life within voodoo practices. The work we undertook to understand the uses and representations of maize by the Fon and Xweda ethnic groups allowed us to approach the voodoo community of Ouidah, former slave port, where we conducted eight years research work. The results of this work enabled us to structure our knowledge of voodoo religion and to highlight the heritage that the people of Ouidah have built around corn at the culinary level as well as at the symbolic level

Full textThis research, assumed that religion supports and legitimates black s and poor people s power belonging to inferior social classes over privileged white society. Was written on purpose to analyze how religion determines and establishes the relationship of power in the Angel Ismael Spiritualistic Center (Voodoo). The main concepts used were: religion as answer to human anxieties; charisma as supernatural talents; and power as charismatic domination. It was put in perspective that religion has as function the legitimization of power and maintenance of reality. It contributes to the construction of the world when when it legitimates social institutions through sacred thought. Religion can influence society through charismatic power, which makes human activities be understood as supernatural facts. In Voodoo, the charismatic leader, witch-doctor, acts on behalf of the divinities. Thus he maintains his followers under his lash. In the Angel Ismael Spiritualistic Center, which was analyzed in this research, it can be noticed this relationship of power and obedience among the leader and his followers. The latter submit to such an obedience in duty to the divinities. Thus it is observed that the relationship of power invoked by the charismatic is one way of making religion assure its strength before society.

The Constitution of 1987 proclaims religious liberty in Haiti and acknowledges Voodoo as a religion. However, Voodoo s legal status was changed only with a decree by President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in April 4th, 2003, which recognized Voodoo as cultural heritage of the Haitian nation This work presents a vision of Haitian Voodoo in the light of these two recent accomplishments of the Haitian people. What has changed since then and which perspectives are now available to the pioneer state in the American fights for independence and for the abolishment of slavery? In order to answer to those questions and the others, we have proposed this reserearch, having organized our work in three chapters. The first one describes the history of Haiti, from the time the country was inhabited by the Taïno Amerindians to the Spanish and French colonization periods and other more relevant events. Then we proceed to describing Voodoo, bearing in mind its origin and historical and sociological evolution. In the second chapter, we reflect on the relation between State, the Catholic Church and Voodoo after Independence. The relation with Voodoo was always tense and controversial, varying from unconditional acceptance to orderly repulse and from tolerance to intransigence. In 1860, the Catholic Church signed a concordat with the Haitian State and, thereafter, organised several campaigns against Voodoo. In the third chapter, we reflect on the rehabilitation of Voodoo by a sector of the country s intellectual elite, with a highlighted contribution of the Indigenist School during American occupation. The main representatives of that movement were Jean Price-Mars, physician and anthropologist, and Jacques Roumain, a novel writer and François Duvalier. They contributed to the renaissance of Voodoo as a religion, with numerous publications and pieces of research. With II Vatican Council, however, The Catholic Church has become more understanding and tolerant regarding Voodoo, to a point in which it has come to try to understand the latter from within. The revaluation of Voodoo helped it to leave clandestineness and helped Haitians to reencounter the values which united them in the past and which can unite them again around a project of national reconstruction

The mission received from Jesus Christ (cf. Mt 29, 19-20) has been accepted by the universal church, and is effective in the activity and outreach of each particular church. Therefore, we understand that a church becomes particular when it can take local cultural elements and incorporate them in the enculturation of the Gospel in this local reality. Indeed, the mission of making Jesus Christ known to the ends of the earth experiences many challenges regarding the languages, mentalities, political environments and cultures. It is in the process the enculturation, that Jesus Christ may be incarnated in a mission to liberate and to save the humanity. However, the process of evangelization is not always free of evangelizers cultures conceptions and, almost always the native people s cultures were fought, ignored, or repressed. This research studies the Haitian reality in the cultural shock between the process of Christian evangelization and voodoo. We try to contextualize both voices of the local church as their own writings on the international scene and also the vast theological thought of that time. We show also the work of the black leaders to insure recognition of the black culture, defending it against all prejudices, charges of fetishism, witchcraft and other issues combated the black culture where the voodoo is a form of expression. After analyzing the way the local church related to voodoo and the inspiration of the second Vatican Council, we search for pointing out possible alternatives that can lead a harmony between the two religions that are currently under the law, with the same degree of importance. We do not ignore the presence of other religions, but we place our focus on studying the pastoral elements that may make for a possible way to overcome the current challenges. This is demanded in the new plural context Haitian reality, especially since the legal recognition of Voodoo as a Religion and the arrival of new religions with the UN mission in Haiti since 2004. The conclusion underlines the hypothesis that A return to preconciliar practices can only hinder the activity of the local church if it wants to be in tune with the universal mission of the church and especially if it intends to respond to the appeal of the Continental Magisterial, and more specifically to the Aparecida Conference that calls for a pastoral conversion as required in response to the signs of the times

Full textThe Haitian voodoo presents a profusion of practices and perceptible representations, symbolic ones, as material as corporeal. He influences the arts and the literature of a whole culture, well beyond the circle of his followers. If it is plural from origin, it was also collected and represented in a multiple way by his outer observers. Forged during a tempestuous history and present, its representation system seems to present a character at the same time persistent and permeable, connected to the faith itself. Through the analysis of worship images, a cinematic exploration conducted within a religious community of Port-au-Prince, and finally through a participatory experience of confrontation of the recorded images with the agents and film construction according to three different modalities, the study attempts to question the representation system of the followers and the relationship which it maintains with the faith. The research also tries to examine restitutions forms and specific visual anthropology tools applied to the study of symbolic representation systems and their dynamics

Full textAny religious coexistence can be a factor of religious conflict or symbol of respect for freedom, tolerance or live together, depending on the way in which it is included, or the nature of the religions in coexistence. Even when each religion shares a vision of the world different compared to the other, it is found that the coexistence between religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism - and Buddhism in some cases) is more effective, because these religions share in one way or another some common values. On the other hand, it is constantly difficult to conceive of a pluralistic approach in a logic of dialogue between revealed religions and traditional religions. Yet, the meeting of Christianity with traditional African religious cultures shows that despite the difficulties, there is a possibility to have fruitful exchanges also with the traditional religions. In the context of Haiti, the meeting of Christianity with the voodoo does not leave always the possibility for observers to foresee that the religion is a sign of peace and social cohesion. Given that their antagonism is often characterized by factors such as intolerance, the disrespect of the freedom of the other, etc., the problem is especially in the management of religious relationships. Nevertheless, in some cases where the religious interests are treated in the second plan, it has to be noted that the coexistence of these religions in Haiti can be rich in symbol of peace and mutual understanding. Therefore, this research work seeks to understand the design of Christianity from the perspective of voodoo and vice versa, in the aim to see with accuracy the factors of acceptable (and inacceptable) differences and those that could be the basis of a possible interreligious Dialogue between Christianity and Voodoo in the Haitian context. To improve the relationship between the followers of the voodoo and Christians in Haiti, this work finally proposes some methods that can lead to a peaceful religious coexistence, toward more tolerant and a reciprocal knowledge and intelligent approach to the other. The goal of the dialogue presented in this dissertation is neither that Christianity and the Voodoo should work together in all points of view, nor even that they completely recognize mutually their belief, it is rather a proposal for a common life in peace, without slander and reciprocal stereotypes

Video content is a massive source of entertainment, education, and income for a large population of online users. As more reliance upon this medium enters the field of education, formal and informal, people need tools to enhance their ability to tell stories and engage an audience. A tool that easily adjusts without compromising the interaction, the storytelling, or the visual moment, while also capturing as much information as possible, might be of great benefit to all creators of video content. Allowing tutorial creators the ability to efficiently record multiple views of their content may better aid in presenting concepts while retaining the attention of the viewership. The opportunity to present information effectively may have impacts on fields including education as well as entertainment. This thesis aims to explore possible reasons why content can be made to retain the audience's attention and to create a tool utilizing these facets for far reaching possibilities.

Due to the nature of the sources, this research is divided in two parts. The first one is the edition and philological study of a corpus of texts dealing with witchcraft, while the second one constitutes the analysis of the content itself using a theoretical approach from social anthropology. This analysis aims to improve our understanding of the different ways in which the Hittites conceived of witchcraft and to apprehend the cultural realities behind the texts. Therefore, this research will naturally be at the crossroads of anthropology, philology and the history of religions

Abstract This study is made up of five chapters. The purpose of this study is to analyze sorcery figures and actions in the famous novel title of Ming Dynasty. Chapter one presents the studying motivations, the methodology and the scope of the study and the literature review. In chapter two are the typological explorations of the sorcery figures in title of Ming Dynasty as far as their status, personalities, specialties, and religious attributes are concerned. Chapter three focuses on sorcerers’ cultural types, and discusses their relations to Chinese cultures and society. Moreover, the relationship of the sorcerers’ social status and the sorcerers themselves to the politics and society of the Ming Dynasty has also been discussed. Chapter four presents a whole discussion of the sorcery in the Ming Dynasty. Discussions begin from the definitions of sorcery, then to the analyses of the types and contents of sorcery in the Ming Dynasty, and finally, by means of representative figures, to the explorations of the interactive relationship between sorcery, religion and sorcery figures. Chapter five concludes the main points of the previous four chapters. Moreover, also presented in this chapter are the combination of sorcery and sorcerers with the lives of the people in the Ming Dynasty and the co-existent relationship between sorcery and Confucianists Buddhism and Taoism

Ribeiro, Pedro do Rêgo. "Voodoo : a system that allows children to create animated films with action figures as interface." Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1822/27838.
Full textUsing any kind of dolls as a tangible interface, has the potential to provide a friendly and easy to learn interface that allows children to control virtual characters in a more intuitive way. The research effort in this domain has been motivated by the shortcomings of conventional interfaces, typically mouse and keyboard, which in this context are neither compelling nor do promote immersion. This dissertation focuses on the design and evaluation of a system which can interpret the behaviors that children give to a doll in order to provide this behavioral information to the virtual characters. With this system, the user (children) gets the role of movie director, directing virtual characters through this natural form of interaction. This dissertation aims to evaluate the hypothesis that dolls behaviors recognition based on the context of a well-known story, may enhance the ability of children in the creation of an animated film (virtual characters animations). Unlike many approaches that use a direct mapping of the doll movements to the virtual character, it is intended to test the mapping based on the crosses between, user behavioral intention, and the context where the doll it is inserted (the role and the location of the character in the story). The results show that the concept of interaction proposed to empower the children with a way to create animated films is actually very intuitive and easy to use. However, due to the technology used, it was not possible to assess to what extent this concept really empowers children to easily and joyfully create animated films.

Trafficking in human beings, enshrined in the Portuguese Penal Code, did not always have the formulation as known today. It passed through different formulations, until it acquired its autonomy vis-à-vis other social and criminal phenomena associated with migration, foreign labor, prostitution, pimping, or fraud employment, among others.Criminal Law appears in this context as a cornerstone in the sense of delimiting, choosing and selecting such complex and sensitive considerations, in view of the cultural evolution of times, until the current moment, reflecting on potential gaps to fill or amendments to be undertaken, in a continuous improvement. In this sense, in the needed interdisciplinary convergence to understand phenomena with increasing relevance, and taking into account the International, European and Portuguese legislative developments, we envisaged to analyze the case of human trafficking through the manipulation of the victims' unconscious, by introducing them in mystical rituals aiming to depersonalizing and exploring them. With this objective, we used the case of voodoo, based on the Nigerian reality and the growing number of identified victims in sexual exploitation in the Member States of the European Union, in the invisibility that the profound degree of manipulation imposes them. With this reflection, we endeavored to raise the debate regarding this and other similar phenomena, involving the manipulation of the victims' minds, through the analysis of appreciated and judged cases, perceiving the great invisibility and the high number of black figures existing in the reality of the manipulation through voodoo rituals. In this analysis, we believe that the State's proactivity in taking measures that reinforce the prevention and repression of this crime is central, thus favoring a more effective identification and better support for the victims rescued by Justice.
Alves, Tiago Miguel Laureano. "VooDooM : support for understanding and re-engineering of VDM-SL specifications." Master's thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1822/6261.
Full textThe main purpose of this work is to define steady ground for supporting the understanding and re-engineering of VDM-SL specifications. Understanding and re-engineering are justified by Lehman’s laws of software evolution which state, for instance, that systems must be continually adapted and as a program evolves its complexity increases unless specific work is done to reduce it. This thesis reports the implementation of understanding and re-enginering techniques in a tool called VooDooM, which was built in three well defined steps. First, development of the language front-end to recognize the VDMSL language, using a grammar-centered approach, supported by the SDF formalism, in which a wide variety of components are automatically generated from a single grammar; Second, development of understanding support, in which graphs are extracted and derived and subsequently used as input to strongly-connected components, formal concept analysis and metrication. Last, development of re-engineering support, through the development of a relational calculator that transforms a formal specification into an equivalent model which can be translated to SQL. In all steps of the work we thoroughly document the path from theory to practice and we conclude by reporting successful results obtained in two test cases.
