Abstract:
The paper deals with the evolution of votive offering as the expression of praying for health and the gratitude for a miracle cure from ancient times to the present day. The tradition of votive offerings, as the means of asking for health and receiving a miracle cure, goes for thousands of years. The article analyses the question if the votive offering tradition has been continued in Lithuanian churches and if any known facts about a miracle cure have been found in the 21st century. The aim of this research is to detect the continuation of the votive offerings in Lithuanian churches. Interviews and content analysis have been used as research methods. Information collected from interviewing 5 worshipers and 19 priests in Lithuania. Unique examples of a miracle cure have been depicted. Votive offerings have been analysed as a part of rich cultural heritage. The diversity of votive offerings has been detected and depicted in the fine arts. The tradition of votive offering is viewed as the expression of the belief in a miracle cure. The assumption has been made that the placebo effect is present in a miracle cure. The findings suggest that the tradition of votive offerings still exist and being practiced in Lithuanian churches nowadays.

Abstract:
The collective memory of people in the post-Soviet space preserves some stereotypes, and they have a certain influence on the cognitive process. For example, the focus on interfaith conflict, as well as silencing issues of constructive interaction, was a deliberate manipulation. The author set the goal of analysing intercultural contact between different ethnic groups in the religious practice of votive offerings in Ukrainian lands. The attribution of votive offerings preserved in museums in Ukraine shows that the tradition was widespread, but waned during the Soviet era.

Abstract: In response to criticisms of my proposal to understand the term ἱλαστήριον in Rom 3,25 as “votive offering”, both theologically and lexicographically, this article tries to develop the matter a step further. Therefore, it first discusses the various problems concerning the widely held interpretation that the term refers to the “mercy seat” of Lev 16LXX and describes the death of Jesus as the establishment of a new place of atonement. Furthermore, the philological possibility of translating ἱλαστήριον as “votive offering” or, more precisely, as “propitiatory offering” is elaborated in detail. Finally, the article discusses the application of the ancient practice of propitiatory offerings to Rom 3,25, directing attention to its possible reception by the listeners and to the theological significance of this process.

Abstract:
AbstractGreek devotional activity from the eighth through third centuries included the accumulation of common votive types, many of which exhibited similar motifs and repetitive designs. This paper explores constructed assemblages by focusing on the dedication of objects featuring visual and iconographic “sameness.” Building on the work of D. Morgan and J. González, this paper theorizes Greek votive accumulations as larger conglomerations that impact religious experience through the artifacts’ very number and ubiquity. Evidence from Athens and Corinth suggests that an individual’s personal biography and past movements through the local landscape gave pervasive religious imagery a sense of familiarity and meaningfulness. While the appearance of ubiquitous votives may have been dictated by tradition and manufacturing realities, their use to create monumental votive deposits had phenomenological impact. Drawing on evidence from treasury records and excavated material at a number of Greek sanctuaries, this paper argues that, when they formed assemblages of repetitive religious images, worshippers created larger, dynamic monuments out of individual items. The clustered offerings participated in an “aesthetics of accumulation,” visually and physically linking individuals to a network of other worshippers.

Abstract:
AbstractIreland is a country with a generous citizenship offering but restricted external voting rights. The first (or emigrant) generation lose the right to vote eighteen months after departure; other non-resident citizens, including those in Northern Ireland (NI) are currently ineligible to vote. In November 2020 the Irish Government committed to holding a referendum which if passed, would give all Irish citizens, resident and non-resident the right to vote in Presidential elections. This chapter, based on interviews with people born in the UK and Northern Ireland who acquired Irish passports following the UK’s referendum to leave the European Union considers the topic of Irish external voting through the lens of these new passport holders, exploring their relationship to political participation in the Republic of Ireland.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter explores migrants’ perspectives on voting in country-of-origin elections and on participation in democratic politics in countries of origin in Central and East Europe. We build on 80 semi-structured interviews with migrants from Poland and Romania, living in Barcelona, Spain, and Oslo, Norway. The chapter offers an analysis of their thoughts on and experiences of practicing external voting, as well as choosing not to cast a ballot in any given election. The first part explores the reasons why migrants do—or do not—vote “back home,” offering illustrations from our data, focusing on motivations for external voting, practicalities that impede or facilitate external voting, and discussing intersecting scales of motivation. These discussions are set within the context of migrants’ broader motivations to engage in politics transnationally, and intimately connected with their reflections on the principled question of the democratic legitimacy of external voting. The second part of the chapter extends the view from external voting to migrants’ own perspectives on transnational political engagement, including but not limited to external voting, as set within often transnational lifeworlds affected by both “here” and “there” in varying ways.

Abstract:
The rise of e-commerce websites like Amazon and Alibaba is changing the way how designers seek information to identify customer preferences in product design. From the feedbacks posted by consumers, either positive or negative, product designers can monitor the trend of consumers’ perception with respect to their product offerings and make efforts to improve accordingly. Starting from feature extraction from review documents, existing methods in identifying helpful online reviews regard the helpfulness prediction problem as a regression or classification problem and have not considered the relationship between customer reviews. Also, these approaches only consider the online helpfulness voting ratio or a unified helpfulness rating as the gold criteria for helpfulness evaluation and neglect various personal preferences from product designers. Therefore, in this paper, the focus is on how to predict reviews’ helpfulness by taking into account the personal preferences from both reviewers and designers. We start to analyze review helpfulness from both a generic aspect and a personal preference aspect. Classification methods and the proposed review similarity learning approach are utilized to estimate from the generic angle of helpfulness, while nearest neighbourhood based methods are adopted to reflect concerns from personal perspectives. Finally, a regression algorithm is called upon to predict review helpfulness based on the inputs from both aspects. Our experimental study, using a large quantity of review data crawled from Amazon and real ratings from product designers demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach and it opens a possibility for customized helpful review routing.

Abstract:
Universities tend to think that they know their students very well, but in real life conditions, many aspects are being left out of the consideration. This paper has set the main focus on the Information and Communication Technology based feedback systems for collection and analysis of student feedback who are mainly studying engineering sciences about everyday student life issues (such as study content, teachers, class schedule, satisfaction rates, environment, accessibility of resources and other). In the paper, authors propose a model of student feedback system that could intelligently address the gap between what student wants and thinks - what higher education institutions know about their students. Authors also review current offerings of the systems and addresses feedback as a part of quality assurance and demand driven University actions. With simple, but intelligent solution it would be possible to easily obtain and work with the information about neglected courses, personalized schedules, student voting, extracurricular activities, student research and more. Author also elaborates on perspective of social innovation that comes in a shape of new organizational form, where quality, decisions, and activities are bound to the continuous feedback that gets collected from the students. This would help Universities all across the globe to establish indisputable evidence for their actions. Challenge here lies within the responsibility of students to give correct, precise, honest and timely feedback. Findings of the paper are based on the literature review as well as five international expert discussions executed in the period of 2015-2017 in five different countries.

Abstract:
Urban planning constitutes a pivotal role in the daily routines of citizens, exerting a substantial influence on their overall quality of life. Consequently, the involvement of citizens in these planning processes is imperative. Citizen participation is a promising tool for bolstering acceptance of implemented urban planning measures. At the moment, considerable attention is directed toward the integration of virtual reality (VR) in the realm of urban planning and participation. However, the efficacy of this method seems contingent upon specific conditions or target user groups. Thus, it is crucial to differentiate the formats and methods suitable for approaching user groups at various stages to elicit a high level of satisfaction with participation, thereby ensuring enduring positive effects for future citizen engagement. This study aims to formulate a model of citizen participation in urban planning, elucidating the factors influencing satisfaction with participation and the subsequent willingness to engage in future planning processes. A comprehensive literature review identified the following factors impacting satisfaction and future willingness to participate: 1) Participation level, 2) Participation format, 3) Time of participation, and 4) Personal characteristics. In terms of participation level, informative procedures furnish participants with factual information but confer limited decision-making power. Deliberative processes, on the other hand, foster communication, discussion, and opinion formation, affording participants greater influence. Collaborative processes emphasize concrete cooperation and joint solution finding through activities such as research, analysis, and design. Regarding participation format, a dichotomy exists between analogue (e.g., citizen consultation hours, residents' meetings, face-to-face surveys) and digital (e.g., online meetings, virtual reality visualization, online voting) methods. Engagement can be initiated at different stages of the planning process, including the early planning stage, start, implementation phase, or project conclusion. Additionally, individual factors such as age, gender, norms, motives, and convictions have been identified in numerous studies as influencing participation satisfaction and willingness. This model, integrated into the NUMIC2.0 project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, investigates determinants of citizen participation in urban and regional planning. The model incorporates the identified aspects and constructs from the literature review, offering insights into the factors influencing successful citizen participation. Advantages and disadvantages of diverse methods and approaches for specific user groups will be outlined within the paper. The model is intended to provide the municipalities with a basis for selecting suitable methods, engagement levels and participation times tailored to the respective target groups. Future research should focus on validating the model.

Abstract:
Today, Phanagoria’s lapidarium has a hundred ancient Greek inscriptions, including the ones published here. Considering the thousand-year history of a large ancient city, this amount seems very small. Five new inscriptions coming from excavations at Phanagoria in 2019 and 2021 are discussed in this article. Inscription 1 is carved on a small rectangular marble block and dates to the end of the I century BC – first half of the I century AD. The right part of the three-line inscription has been preserved. The appearance of the marble block with the inscription suggests that it served as the basis for a votive offering or, maybe, a small statuette. Apparently, the inscription was a dedicatory one. The name of the deity was located at the beginning of the inscription and is not preserved. After the deity’s name, names and patronymics of three dedicants are carved. The patronymic of the last initiator, Bates, has been fully preserved. Inscription 2 represents the remains of six lines on the right side of a marble slab. The in scription’s content is unclear. It dates between the second half of the second century AD. Several names are expected to be read on the inscription. Inscription 3 is carved on a grey marble column and contains a dedication to the Most High God by a certain Julius (his full name has not been preserved). It dates back to the 60–70 AD. A dedication to the Most High God is seen in Phanagoria for the first time, despite the wide spread of this monotheistic cult in large Bosporan cities in the second–third centuries AD. Inscription 4 is carved on a block of marble-like limestone of a rather big size. It dates back to 217 CE and was erected by the community of Agrippia (former Phanagoria). The impressive size of the block suggests that the block was part of an urban structure, and the inscription on it was, apparently, related to construction. Inscription 5 is carved on a marble slab. It is only preserved fragmentary. According to the article’s author, it is a part of a building inscription of King Reskuporides II (210–227 AD). The inscription, presumably, talks about the restoration work of the city walls, towers and their foundations. These works were carried out under the care of epimeletos, whose name has not been preserved.

Abstract:
In Europe, the demographic profile is towards an increasingly aged workforce [1], characterized by a significant aging of the population. The people aged 55 years or more accounted for one fifth of the total workforce, and as one consequence of increasing longevity, must work more years before retirement [2].Aging of the workforce is a growing problem for many developed and developing countries, pushing companies to explore ways to keep older workers employed for a longer period of time and to support them to maintain their work ability and increase their employability. The literature shows that “age related factors should be taken into consideration in daily management, including work arrangements and individual work tasks, so that everybody, regardless of age, feels empowered in reaching their own and corporate goals” [3].At the same rhythm with these challenges related to the ageing workforce, the work itself is undergoing technological upgrading driven by digitization. ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) have radically determined the modification of people's habits and lifestyles, also in the field of work, introducing new methods of working for example the smart working. These evolving work methods required smart workers to acquire new professional skills in a short time and to adapt to new technologies, new work processes and new forms of collaboration. All these changes lead to greater difficulties, especially for aged smart workers, such as: i) lack of physical interactions and the resulting isolation; ii) increased workload and consequently increased stress (always on); iii) difficulties in communication and time management problems; iv) work-life balance and personal life problems. Therefore it emerges the need to design innovative and friendly devices to address the challenges and difficulties mentioned above, facilitating interaction between smart workers, time management and work organization. These innovative devices and systems need to be easy to use and intuitive to learn in order to increase the inclusion of the aging smart workers, reducing the digital divide.Tangible User Interfaces could represent a fertile ground with the greatest potential to tackle these challenges as they give physical form to digital information and computation, and at the same time they facilitate the direct manipulation of bits. Unlike GUIs, where human-machine interaction occurs through the use of a mouse, keyboard or touchpad and is displayed on a screen as interaction’s results, the use of TUIs involves direct interaction with physical objects to which digital information has been associated, within a defined action space. In this context, the challenge is how ICT-embedded solutions, particularly Tangible User Interfaces, can meet the needs of a growing number of ageing smart worker in terms of inclusion, and of social, physical and mental wellbeing to sustain a team spirit, maintain team cohesion by offering sensory user experience and a tactile interaction with digitized work. The general objective of the research project presented in this article is to develop ICT-embedded devices based on TUIs, aimed at aging smart workers, with following objectives:fostering communication and interaction with the digital world through a tactile experience;increasing the organization, motivation, and job satisfaction; promoting work-life balance to increase physical and mental wellbeing. The result consists of a digital devices’ system, that can interact with each other and with users through a dedicated application for mobile. The system allows to improve the smart workers experience and their well-being through:empowerment, with the introduction of a "digital personal coach" who accompanies the worker during the performance of the activities;enhancement of concentration by providing for the performance of only one activity at a time to increase the overall efficiency of the worker;work-life balance improvement, with a better management of the balance between working and private dimensions;communication and collaboration facilitation with other colleagues;reduction of technological abundance through the use of tangible interfaces;exploitation of peripheral interaction to reduce the risk of loss of concentration during activities.1.European Commission - Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs: The 2015 Ageing Report.
