Entrepreneurship is a vehicle of growth and job creation. America has understood it and benefitted most from following this philosophy. Governments around the world need to build and grow their entrepreneurial ecosystems to support the economies and foster innovation. Approaches taken to encourage entrepreneurship vary around the world based on cultural norms, market conditions, and economic circumstances. Entrepreneurial ecosystems are generally comprised of the government, which builds rules and regulations to support entrepreneurship, the angel and venture capital industry, which provide necessary startup and growth capital to support entrepreneurship, the financial market, which provides financial incentives and exit routes for startups, and finally the entrepreneurs, who form teams and start companies. This thesis is an attempt to study and analyze the entrepreneurial ecosystems in the U.S, Europe, and Asia. Primarily relying on interviews with industry experts and supported by academic research, it draws qualitative comparisons of entrepreneurship processes among these regions to understand the differences in these environments.

Abstract:
This dissertation consists of three stand-alone but interrelated empirical studies investigating various aspects of the well-documented ??home bias anomaly?? in international investment. The findings help to understand the international investment allocation behaviour of mutual funds as well as their implications for asset pricing and mutual fund evaluation. The first study investigates the roles of various firm attributes that encapsulate the deadweight costs in determining firm level investment bias. The main findings suggest that firm characteristics related to transaction costs, corporate governance and information asymmetry create significant barriers for fund managers. In addition, foreign funds are more constrained than domestic funds by information asymmetry, even in developed and liberalized markets. Moreover, this study stylises the international investment allocation model in Cooper and Kaplanis (1986) with a quadratic cost function, which reveals the marginal influence of market level deadweight costs on the relationship between firm characteristics and investment bias. It is found that when market level cross-border barriers are exacerbated, as in the case of emerging and restricted financial markets, foreign fund managers become more sensitive to market level deadweight costs and ignore firm characteristics. In general, these findings imply that the market level ??home bias anomaly?? is an outcome of the complementary effects of investment barriers at both firm and market levels. The second study examines the role of firm level investment bias in predicting future stock returns. It is found that both firm level foreign and domestic biases contain valuable information with respect to firm prospects. However, domestic bias is more informative than foreign bias in terms of subsequent stock returns, partially because of information asymmetry. The third study explores the determinants of fund level investment bias and its ability to predict fund performance. It is found that fund portfolio attributes determine fund level investment biases after controlling for market and fund investment objective specific effects, and fund level investment bias is positively related to fund performance due to lower deadweight costs. Moreover, good macroeconomic environments foster the development of the mutual fund industry.

Ji, Chen. "Salt intake and iodine status around the world." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2013. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/57708/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Salt reduction and universal salt iodisation programmes are implemented worldwide to prevent cardiovascular disease and iodine deficiency disorders, respectively. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential policy conflicts, and a programme coalition is proposed by the World Health Organization to optimise salt and iodine intakes at population level. This study aimed 1) to estimate population salt intake and iodine status in index countries; 2) to investigate the association between salt and iodine intakes; 3) to assess the impact of salt intake modification on iodine status; 4) to estimate the determinants of and potential geographical variation in salt and iodine intakes where data are available; and 5) to provide suggestions to policy makers. Data and Methods: In the ecological analysis, national estimations of salt and iodine intakes were extracted from international organisation databases and published papers. Three case studies used population level data obtained from the Kumasi Salt Reduction Study in Ghana, the Third United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) and the 2000-01 UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey 19-64 years (NDNS). Linear regression was used in the Kumasi analysis, and Bayesian geo-additive models were used in the other two analyses by accounting for the spatial effect and important linear and nonlinear risk factors. Results: Salt intake varied between countries, with Kumasi lower than the western countries. Iodine status also varied by country, but with no consistent association with salt intake. A moderate salt reduction programme is unlikely to have a major impact on iodine status in countries committed to universal salt iodisation, provided that iodine concentration is titrated to actual salt intake, maximum coverage is achieved as in China and iodised salt becomes part of food processing. At least in Britain, high salt intake is associated with low socioeconomic status, irrespective of geographic location. Conclusions: Policy-makers may therefore need to adjust iodine content in salt in accordance with each country’s context. The Bayesian geo-additive models are useful for monitoring and evaluating salt reduction and iodine supplementation.

Abstract:
TESIS PARA OPTAR AL GRADO DE MAGÍSTER EN ECONOMÍA
Sleeping is probably the most frequent consumption and investment activity of humans, but it has been relatively understudied in economics. In this paper we use a time use global dataset and test competing theories to explain the differences in sleeping time between the rich and the poor around the world. We find that high income full-time workers tend to sleep less than those of low-income. Average estimates show a 10-20 minute lower sleep for the top quartile vis-a-vis poorer quartile of full-time workers. This stylized fact is robust to several covariates using panel data regressions, holding both across countries and, most importantly, within the countries in our sample. Furthermore, the observed negative covariation of income and sleep among workers, is consistent with a potential substitution effect with several leisure activities, like commute, surfing on the internet and outside socializing activities, all of which are also positively (and significantly) correlated with household income.

Abstract:
Le Corbusier's method of creating Architecture in all regions of the world is endlessly rich in techniques. While it is impossible to exactly know his thoughts as he created his modern compositions that skillfully addressed contextual cues, I present a thesis of how Corbusier approached different sites and masterfully created residences that were places "where happiness is born". I will use Shape Grammars and formulate my own languages that will recreate Corbusier's two Monol houses: Maison Jaoul in Paris and Sarabhai Villa in Ahmedabad. Furthermore, I will expand on these houses by creating other iterations, and transforming the grammars to understand critical major and minor moves. In the end I hope to derive architectural lessons that come from formal exercises that can be used in future design processes. I explore this practical effort by creating designs for a site in Midtown, Atlanta. I compare the process of using Shape Grammars with that of the typical studio approach. In conclusion, I find that Shape Grammars allows one to produce iterations that connect to the lessons of the original houses in an intuitive manner.

Shettima, U. "The determinants of microfinance institutions' capital structure around the world." Thesis, University of Salford, 2017. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/43661/.

Full text
Abstract:
An enduring problem facing microfinance institutions is access to funding. This study investigates the determinants of MFIs access to funding using a comprehensive measure of capital structure. The design of the study takes account three gaps in our current understanding of this topic. Firstly, despite the huge literature on MFIs corporate governance and the significant role of women on microfinance outcomes, it is perhaps surprising that no research has been conducted on the effect of board gender diversity on MFIs capital structure. Secondly, the role of standard firm-specific and institutional-specific factors in determining MFIs capital structure decision is unclear. Utilizing an alternative regression framework may provide a reliable analysis. Thirdly, our understanding of the composition of MFIs leverage is far from complete. The relationship between deposit liabilities and non-deposit liabilities have not yet been subject of investigation. In response to these three major issues, this study employs empirical research methods using panel data analysis technique. We find that female directors have significant positive influence on deposits and subsidies. Furthermore, the study also shows evidence of risk-taking attitude among female directors when MFIs have three or more of them on board. Secondly, we find that the effect of firm-specific factors on MFIs capital structure differ across countries, while prior studies assume equal impact of these determinants. We find that institutional-specific factors significantly explain the variation of MFIs leverage across countries. However, commercially related institutional factors does not affect MFIs access to subsidies. We also show that there is an indirect impact of institutional factors, as we report their significance effect through firm-specific factors. Finally, the study provides empirical evidence that deposits and borrowings are substitutes rather than complements, and that the degree of substitutability is more pronounced in MFIs operating in a developed financial sector, where the degree of information asymmetry is lower.

Dicle, Mehmet F. "Commonality of Liquidity around the World: Evaluation of Possible Reasons." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2008. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/832.

Abstract:
We identify some of the factors affecting the extent of commonality in liquidity and differences between different stock exchanges around the world. With a comprehensive approach, our investigation centers on presenting evidence on the existence of commonality in liquidity, effect of using different measures of market variables on the level of commonality, factors that change the likelihood of stocks having commonality and factors explaining the different levels of commonality across markets. For the individual stock liquidity, we employ most common and reliable liquidity measures including quoted bid and ask spread, proportional spread, effective spread, proportional effective spread and percentage spread. For the market liquidity, we calculate the equal weighted and value weighted averages of the individual stock liquidity measures. Our base model of commonality of liquidity is an extension of Chordia, Roll, and Subrahmanyam (2000). Our data includes 36,457 common stocks in 46 stock exchanges in 33 countries. Our data period begins on January 2000 and covers until the end of December 2007. Our results show that 14.38% of all stocks in the world have commonality in liquidity with their markets when equally weighted market variables are used. This percentage drops to 9.76% with using value weighted market variables. After controlling for commonality in certain days of the week, we find that commonality is, in most part, uniformly distributed across days-of-the-week, almost for all countries. We also find that market factors including average spread, average price, average return, average risk, average size, legal system (common vs. civil law) and distribution of mean company size affect the likelihood of companies having commonality within their exchanges. In terms of the different levels across countries, we find that average percentage spread, level of risk, distribution of mean company size and legal system all have significant effects. Our results contribute to the literature analyzing factors that affect the level of commonality and types of companies that are likely to have commonality. Our study also has practical implications for portfolio diversification by providing evidence for possible reasons for common liquidity movements in the markets which may eventually lead to market liquidity crunches.

Coram, Nicolette Joanne. "Molecular characterization of iron-oxidizing Leptospirillum strains from around the world." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52944.

Full text
Abstract:
Dissertation (PhD) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: More than sixteen isolates of iron-oxidizing bacteria belonging to the genus Leptospirillum were included in this study, with the finding that they were clearly divisible into two major groups. Group I leptospirilla had mol% G+C ratios within the range 49-52%, three copies of rrn genes and based on 16S rRNA sequence data, clustered together with the Leptospirillum ferrooxidans type strain (DSM2705or LI5). Group II leptospirilla had mol% G+C ratios of 55-58%, two copies of rrn genes and based on 16S rRNA sequence form a separate cluster. Genome DNA-DNA hybridization experiments indicated that three similarity subgroups were present amongst the leptospirilla tested with two DNA-DNA hybridization similarity subgroups being found within group I. The two groups could also be distinguished based on the sizes of their 16S-23SrRNA gene spacer regions. We propose that the group II leptospirilla should be recognized as a new species with the name Leptospirillum ferriphilum sp. nov. Members of the two species can be rapidly distinguished from each other by amplification of their 16S rRNA genes and carrying out restriction enzyme digests of the products. Several but not all isolates of the group II leptospirilla, but none from group I (L. ferrooxidans) were capable of growth at 45°C. Plasmid DNA was isolated from strain ATCC49879 (L. ferrooxidans). Restriction endonuclease mapping of what appeared to be about 60 kb of plasmid DNA, established that two plasmids of approximately 30.0 kb and 27.0 kb were present. These were named p49879.1 and p49879.2 respectively. Attempts to isolate the plasmids separately were not successful. Partial sequencing of the two plasmids was carried out and sequence analysis of p49879.1 and p49879.2 indicated that the plasmids shared regions of homology. Total plasmid DNA was DIG-labelled and used as a probe in Southern hybridization experiments with genomic DNA from all sixteen original leptospirilla isolates as the target DNA. All leptospirilla belonging to Group I gave a positive signal, little or no homology to Group II leptospirilla was obtained. The region of homology present in all L. ferrooxidans strains was localized to an area on plasmid p49879.2 showing high amino acid identity to a transposase/putative transposase of Methanosarcina acetivorans and plasmid CPl from Deinococcus radiodurans Rl respectively. Whether these regions of homology indicate that complete, functional transposons are present in all L. ferrooxidans isolates still remains to be determined. Preliminary sequence analysis of both plasmids resulted in the identification of regions with amino acid sequence identity to the TnpA and TnpR of the Tn2l-like transposon family, and the mobilization regions of IncQ-like plasmids (particularly that of pTFl from At. ferrooxidans). Another potentially interesting ORF was identified in p49879.2 with high amino acid sequence identity to an ArsR-like protein that belongs to a second atypical family of ArsR transcriptional regulators. Whether this protein is functional in the regulation of arsenic resistance genes has not yet been determined, nor have other arsenic resistance genes been identified. Future work includes further sequence analysis of these plasmids to better understand their contribution to the isolates in which they are found.

Shrime, Mark G. "Health, Poverty, and Surgery in the US and Around the World." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:17467329.

Full text
Abstract:
Health improvement and financial ruin are often inexorably linked. Nearly 30% of the global burden of disease is surgical [1], and over 30 million annual cases of financial ruin are attributable to accessing surgery [2]. In resource-poor countries, where 70% of all healthcare spending is out-of-pocket [3], catastrophic expenditure for medical care is extremely common [4-6]. In the United States, even those with health insurance face financial catastrophe: nearly two-thirds of bankruptcy is medical, and fully 75% of medically bankrupt individuals were insured at the time of their catastrophic medical bill [7]. Financial ruin is most pronounced among the global poor, among patients with life-threatening conditions, and, increasingly, among the elderly [2, 8-10]. As a result, although the World Health Organization [11], the United Nations [12], and the World Bank [13] have all called for financial risk protection in healthcare, medical impoverishment persists, sometimes forcing individuals into a choice between physical health and financial health. Some choose the former and are willing to incur financial ruin to get care: they sell their assets, borrow, decrease consumption, or, catastrophically, face impoverishment in the pursuit of health [4-6, 14-28]. Others respond to a risk of poverty by not complying with physician recommendations, by seeking alternate providers, or by forgoing care altogether [29-34]. In patients with serious conditions, these choices can be lethal [32, 35]. In the US, national health policy has consistently focused on decreasing out-of-pocket medical costs as a mechanism for health improvement—and not always successfully: two years after the initiation of the Oregon Medicaid expansion, for example, health outcomes had not changed dramatically [36]. Globally, policies to improve access to surgical care either mirror this demand-side focus on out-of-pocket cost reduction or address the supply-side dearth of surgical providers through policies such as task shifting [37-39]. The goal of this dissertation, then, is to examine the effects of these policies and platforms for global surgical delivery on health, on impoverishment, and on inequity, and to determine how individuals value tradeoffs among these outcomes. Chapter 1 investigates the role of government policies for increasing surgical access in public hospitals. This extended cost-effectiveness analysis utilizes publicly available data from Ethiopia to evaluate the health, financial, and equity impacts of nine essential surgical procedures on rural patients. Five policies addressing supply- and demand-side barriers to surgical access are examined: 1) universal public financing (UPF), 2) task shifting (TS), 3) UPF with the addition of vouchers (V) to address the nonmedical costs of care, 4) UPF + TS, and 5) UPF + TS + V. I find that, while all policies are likely to improve health, a tradeoff exists: TS averts deaths most dramatically, but does so at the cost of a large increase in financial catastrophe. UPF is more financially risk protective, but has a much smaller impact on health. Only policies that include vouchers for the non-medical costs of accessing care are found to provide an equitable distribution of benefits; the remaining policies continue to impoverish the poor. Chapter 2 compares surgical delivery by charitable organizations with the governmental policies examined in Chapter 1. Using an agent-based model of cancer care in Uganda, the three common charitable platforms for surgical delivery—two-week “mission trips”, mobile surgical units, and free-standing specialty hospitals—are evaluated against combinations of UPF, TS, and V. In addition to health and catastrophic expenditure, two novel metrics are included to 1) incorporate the familial financial impact of a lack of access and 2) formalize the equitable distribution of benefits into a concentration index. I find that mobile surgical delivery platforms by non-governmental organizations can provide health and financial benefits equitably and efficiently and that they perform well when compared to health-system-strengthening policies. Other charitable platforms are equitable but are not efficient when compared with government policies. The results of this analysis also confirm the finding from Chapter 1 that equitable delivery platforms must address the non-medical costs associated with getting to care. Chapter 3 tests the hypothesis that, in the setting of lethal disease, individuals value cure at all costs. A discrete choice experiment is undertaken in a nationally representative US sample of 2359 individuals. Respondents are asked to choose between two hypothetical treatments for a lethal disease, differing only in their chance of cure and their risk of bankruptcy. I find that the resulting indifference curve is multiplicative, and that Americans are less willing to shoulder high risks of bankruptcy to increase their probability of cure than has been previously assumed. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses do not alter this relationship, although, in some groups, the difference in preference between bankruptcy protection and cure is not statistically significant. In no subgroup, however, do I find evidence a significant preference for cure at any cost in the American population.

Abstract:
A content analysis was conducted to analyze how media frame roller derby. The research included an analysis of newspaper articles published all around the world in 20 different nations from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2011, and different languages were considered. The research did not support previous studies concerning women athletes and the sport. Overall tone toward roller derby was mainly neutral, and the description of roller derby was not defined as sexist or using violent terms. Women journalists who wrote articles were slightly more sexist and used violent terms than men. Exploratory research showed that the previous findings did not change no matter the date of publication of the article or when roller derby was implemented in the nation. Results were not statistically significant. Also, the movie Whip It did not change people's point of view on roller derby even after the movie came out.

Kekis, Olga. "Contemporary Antigones, Medeas, and Trojan Women perform on stages around the world." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2013. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4118/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines postmodern theatrical adaptations of Antigone, Medea and The Trojan Women to show how they re-define the central female figures of the source texts by creating a new work, or ‘hyperplay’, that gives the silenced and often silent female figures a voice, and assigns them a political presence in their own right. Using a collection of diverse plays and their performances which occurred in a variety of geographical locations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, this thesis analyzes adaptive, ‘hypertheatrical’, strategies employed by the theatre, through which play texts from the past are ‘re-made’ in the here and now of theatrical performances. A close analysis of these performances demonstrates how the historical and cultural identity of contemporary audiences informs the process of re-interpretation of familiar material within new contexts. They evidence how these re-makings reflect the culture, the political moment or the socio-historical coincidence in which they are conceived and performed. Most importantly this thesis shows that without exception these appropriations become entirely new Antigones, Medeas and Trojan Women; they invoke re-configurations or re-inventions of femininity which detect and emphasise individual women’s strengths and female solidarity, thus placing the plays firmly within a contemporary feminist discourse.

Monier, Katja Susanna. "Vision and devotion in Bourges around 1500 : an illuminator and his world." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/16236.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the first full study of the anonymous illuminator known by the name of convention, the Master of Spencer 6, after his finest work, ms. 6 in the Spencer Collection at the New York Public Library. Active at the turn of the sixteenth century, during the transitional period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, this artist provides a revealing case study for examining the changing tastes and preoccupations of the patrons, as well as the way in which illuminators were operating in order to secure work and forge a career. The career of the Master of Spencer 6 can be reconstructed from nearly forty surviving books and fragments. He appears to have painted manuscripts for a wide range of clientele, from unknown merchants to figures such as Henry VII of England. The quality of his execution is equally varied, from modest, hastily prepared images, to exquisite paintings invested with verisimilitude and invention that deserve wider acknowledgement. This illuminator, presumably based in Bourges, seems to have travelled as far as Troyes, Paris, Tours, and possibly Lyon, in search of patronage. Although he specialised in devotional images, he also illustrated texts of historical and moral interest. The Master of Spencer 6 was particularly talented in drawing. He appears to have been required to work quickly, in order to respond to the high demand for books; yet, despite the haste, he was able to produce images that were pleasing. A large part of the appeal in his images seems to rely on the quality of line. While his colours were clean and bright, he often applied them hastily or carelessly over the contour lines. Nearly always these shortcomings appear unnoticeable due to the beauty of the lines that define the design. The variety of decorative schemes, layouts, spatial devices, compositions and iconographic motifs utilised by the Master of Spencer 6 demonstrate one of the keys to his success. He was able to diversify his canon to realise any potential order from the vast geographical and social range of his clientele. He also managed to develop his style according to current tastes and fashions. He adapted ideas and techniques from his collaborators, the Colombe workshop and Jacquelin de Montluçon. This thesis provides also the first study of Jacquelin de Montluçon, the painter identified here as the main collaborator of the Master of Spencer 6. Methods of technical art history are used to analyse his sophisticated manner of mixing pigments to produce convincing effects of light. The way in which he applied paint onto a surface, on parchment, panel and stained glass, is used to support attributions and explore the versatile artist that emerges from the analysis. This investigation into these two hitherto little-known artists demonstrates, on one hand, what was required for artists to succeed over others in the profession of manuscript illumination in late fifteenth-century France, and on the other hand, what the concerns of the individuals commissioning images were.

Abstract:
Along with academically focused benefits such as vocabulary and literacy, fiction reading has social-emotional benefits. Readers of fiction can identify with characters, and be transported into the fictional world, to differing degrees. Fiction, specifically, can help foster empathy. It has been well established that lifelong fiction readers have higher levels of cognitive empathy than those who have had limited experience with fiction. This relationship between transportation and empathy is well-researched, but the effect of identification on transportation and empathy is less well-defined. The relationship between identification with characters and transportation has mixed findings, and has been studied mostly with films. The current study focuses on the relationship between identification and cognitive empathy, with transportation as a possible mediator. Participants (n=148, age 18-60) read the story The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, with explicit directions: either to read as if they were the main character (high identification), or read objectively (low identification). Participants then rated their identification (as a manipulation check) and transportation using self-report scales. Cognitive empathy was measured by the reading the Mind in the Eyes test, where participants saw a picture of eyes, and selected which emotion was being expressed. Results showed no difference between groups, indicating a failed manipulation. Further tests showed no significant correlation between condition and transportation; or condition and cognitive empathy; or transportation in cognitive empathy. There was also no significant regression equation. Future research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms, and more potential benefits of fiction.

Abstract:

The war on obesity is a compelling topic in the United States—especially when as of 2012 17 percent, approximately 12.7 million, of children between the ages of 2-19 years are obese. This topic matters to anthropologists for two reasons—first, childhood socialization has been a focal point in the study of anthropology, and secondly, food is culture. This project report reflects my collaboration with a school in Southern California to implement a different approach to teaching children healthy eating habits. It focuses on ways that introducing new foods in a positive and fun environment will create a better relationship with food while increasing the students’ cultural awareness. This approach combined the fields of geography, history, culture, and cuisine to teach students how each field influences one another and affects the nutrition of the people and in turn ourselves. Using standard ethnographic techniques of participant observation this research reports on the reaction the students have to learning about food in a cultural context.

Abstract:
Researcher conducted a content analysis in order to examine how the media framed Julian Assange after the Ecuadorian government granted him political asylum at their embassy in London on August 16, 2012. Researchers compared 380 English and Spanish language newspaper articles from North America, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, Asia, and Latin America to examine regional differences in the way Assange was framed. This study revealed that generally the tone toward Assange was mostly neutral or positive in all continents. Furthermore, European media gave more attention to Julian Assange than did media from North America or other continents. Exploratory research revealed that English language newspapers placed Julian Assange in headlines more frequently than Spanish language sources. Interestingly, even when Assange’s participation in the publication of secret documents affected many different countries, he was not given page prominence in newspapers.

Abstract:
This thesis is a life and time biography of Ellen Dawson (Kanki), 1900-1967, a working class Scottish woman who became a leading communist labor activist in the United States.  As a young textile worker in Barrhead, she was influenced by the events of Red Clydeside, perhaps the most turbulent period of labor unrest in Scottish history. After World War I, she and her family migrated to Lancashire, where she worked first as a spinner and then as a weaver.  In 1921, she led her family to the United States, where she went to work in a textile mill on the outskirts of New York City.  In the mid 1920s, she was a leader in three of the most important American textile strikes of the period – Passaic, New Jersey in 1926, New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1928, and Gastonia, North Carolina in 1929.  In 1928 Ellen Dawson became first vice president of the newly formed National Textile Workers Union, the first woman elected to a national leadership position in an American textile union.  She also served briefly on the executive committee of the Communist party U. S. A., but was expelled from the party because her primary concern was with the plight of American textile workers, not party dogma.  Because of her radical activities, efforts were made by the U. S. Labor Department to revoke her U. S. citizenship and have her deported.  She was saved with the assistance of the American Civil Liberties Union. She abandoned her radical activities in the early 1930s, working as an anonymous weaver until shortly before her death.  Through Ellen Dawson’s life, this thesis offers a personal account of the Scottish Diaspora and the influence of Red Clydeside on labor movements in other parts of the world.  This is the first detailed account of her life.

In my dissertation, I investigate the role of culture, governance, and institutions in the antecedents and outcomes of firm’s socially responsible behavior vis-à-vis corporate social responsibility (CSR). In the first essay, I examine how national and corporate culture depicting long term orientation influences the extent of CSR activities globally. In the second essay, I investigate how corporate ownership and the identity of controlling shareholders affect the extent of environmental CSR. The third essay analyzes whether there is a significant difference between strategic and tactical CSRs in terms of their impact on firm value. Together, this dissertation examines what drives organizations to integrate the interests of stakeholders into strategy formulation concerning CSR; and how organization’s CSR behaviors are influenced by diverse internal and external factors such as corporate governance, culture, and institutional environments.

Abstract:
This report studies the importance of solar cooking when moving towards a more sustainable and egalitarian future. The problems regarding its implementation, in fact, technological, social and economic problems, are presented. A historic overview is offered as well as the theory behind the technology. After studying the current situation concerning cooking, different devices have been analysed and considered, from small ones suitable for households to bigger ones for institutions. Furthermore, several backup systems are also proposed aiming to obtain an ideal Integrated Solar Cooker (ISC). Possible hybrid systems have also been evaluated during the work. Furthermore, state-of-the-art technology in Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is also commented and taken into account for the most efficient combination of technologies. Several photovoltaic kitchens are mentioned in this report as well. Two main conclusions have been drawn: trying to solely rely on the sun is a mistake and the ideal and universal ISC does not exist. Other factors besides the income are determinant when choosing an energy source, therefore, a thorough investigation in every particular case is completely necessary for a successful implementation of an ISC. However, the countless devices available make the adoption of solar technology possible in every situation, helping to achieve some of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Lum, Heather Christina. "Are we becoming superhuman cyborgs? how technomorphism influences our perceptions of the world around us." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4971.

Full text
Abstract:
Although traditionally researchers have focused on making robotics more user-friendly from a human perspective, a new theory has begun to take shape in which humans take on the perspective of a robotic entity. The following set of studies examined the concept of technomorphism defined as the attribution of technological characteristics to humans. This concept has been mentioned anecdotally and studied indirectly, but there is nothing currently available to tap in to the various forms that technomorphism may take. Therefore, one goal of this dissertation was to develop a scale to fill that purpose. The results of the Technomorphic Tendencies Scale (TTS) indicated that there are marked differences between those who technomorphize and those who do not. Further, the wording of the TTS items may have influenced an individual's propensity to respond in a technomorphic way. It may also be that, since technology is so new from an evolutionary perspective, it was difficult for humans to have the adequate verbiage to express their feelings about it. The other goal of this dissertation was to examine where the individual differences may lie in the tendency to technomorphize. During the scale validation process, the Technomorphic Tendencies Scale was used alongside other scales, including those measuring anthropomorphism, acceptance of technology, perceptions of robots, and personality characteristics to determine what characteristics helped determine in what contexts people technomorphize. The results indicated that there were indeed individual differences between those who do and do not technomorphize as it relates to other constructs. An examination of the individual differences also was performed by capturing the low level and more objective differences that may have existed. To do this, the researcher utilized an eye tracker to examine exactly what the participant focuses on while viewing the model pictures.; There were indeed differences in the self reported and attentive level scores between those who fell in the different ranges of technomorphism. The results of both the scale validation and individual differences component of this dissertation suggested that technomorphism does indeed exist. Furthermore, it may be related to how we see each other. Through the study of technomorphism, researchers have come slightly closer to the question of how technology is influencing our perceptions of what it means to be human. The findings from this work should help fuel the desire of others in the field to think about the potential influences of technomorphism during the design and implementation of new devices as well as in how technology may be related to how we perceive each other.

Abstract:
My creative practice has undergone a chronological series of transformations that has entailed experiments in several modes of self-expression. This has included the writing of prose-text, lyrics, song-writing, musical performance as a vocalist, work in film-making and visual documentation and work as a visual artist. In a life that has so far spanned living for substantial periods in different countries and cultures, my creative practice has been strongly influenced by that international and inter-cultural existence. Whilst on the one hand, different cultures nevertheless manifest 'languages' of communality with each other (especially in non-verbal communication, global 'signs, signals' and 'symbols'), on the other hand, there are distinctive and specific cultural patterns (and arts outcomes) that serve to delineate differences between one culture and another. My research and practice has been equally divided between a study of both commonalities and 'difference'. Consequently, the two series of works that have been submitted move regularly between dealing with particular and specific focus on forms and ideas embodied in the art-works of several cultures (particularly the first series), and forms and ideas resulting from a kind of introspective and reflective condition of art-making. From the outset of my research, I was concerned with an 'arts/science' set of paradigms- a practice that engaged with and between scientific method and contemporary arts practice. At some point(s), my research took the form of film-maker, Flamenco student; tourist; overseas worker (Namibia), song-writer and lyricist, but none of these modes ultimately formed the nucleus of my outcomes. The visual works submitted are intended to reflect the inter-cultural and cross-disciplinary modality of my practice. But they are also, a 'chronicle' of 'a life'; in this particular case, my own. The written thesis fluxes between reflective study and analysis and a critical evaluation of the sources, influences and techniques embodied by all works in the two series. Naturally, there is always an element of 'travelogue' about both the practical work and the written documentation. But there is also an intentional discourse on and about sources of inspiration and the affect those sources have on form, content and technique in my work as a visual artist.

Online education has rapidly expanded in recent years, but offering a true laboratory component to online curricula has been limited by the ability to replicate lab experiments at a low cost. Some online courses offer videos or simulations of lab experiments that can be completed on learner's laptops with little to no physical experimentation. The development and implementation of three hands-on suites of laboratory activities designed for independent learners or for AP physics high school MOOCs on the topics of pendulums, inclined planes, and rubber bands is described, with a focus on the design process of creating low cost labs suitable for a variety of student learners, including single learners, multiple learners, and students with instructor supervision. The goal of these labs is to develop observational, measurement, analysis, and modeling skills that connect to students' experiences in the real world. The aim is to advance experimental insight and develop intuition that connects learners to how physical objects will act in their everyday lives. The experiments have been designed to teach multiple concepts via coordinated sets of hands-on activities, including reducing uncertainty, graphing techniques for clear representation of the functional form of the data, experimental design to minimize systematic errors and comparing different ways of measuring the same physical properties.

Abstract:
This study is a content analysis of media content in a 12-month time period in the lives of Jason Wu and Thom Browne, who were the designers of Michelle Obama’s outfit to the second presidential inauguration. In order to discover the increase in awareness and media coverage of these designers due to Michelle Obama’s fashion selection during the second inauguration, which brought about publicity, the researcher compared mentions, tone of stories, and framing of stories concerning these designers 6 months before and after the inauguration. Results indeed gave support to the hypothesis that mentions of these designers increased significantly after that pivotal event, that the mentions were more likely to include Michelle Obama, and that Wu received more mentions than Browne. However, support was not obtained for an increase in positive tone of stories after the inauguration.
