Watts, Dominic James Landon. "Variation and change in the vowel system of Tyneside English." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/350.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a variationist account of phonological variation and change in the vowel system of Tyneside English. The distributions of the phonetic exponents of five vowel variables are assessed with respect to the social variables sex, age and social class. Using a corpus of conversational and word-list material, for which 32 speakers of Tyneside English were recorded, between 30 and 40 tokens per speaker of the variables (i), (u), (e), (o) and (3) were transcribed impressionistically and subclassified by following phonological context. The results of this analysis are significant on several counts. First, the speakers sampled appear to differentiate themselves within the speech community through the variable use of certain socially marked phonetic variants, which can be correlated with the sex, age and class variables. Secondly, the speakers style shift to a greater or lesser degree according to combinations of the three social factors, such that surface variability is reduced as a function of increased formality. Third, the overall pattern among the sample population seems to be one of increasing uniformity or convergence: it is speculated that social mobility among upper working- and lower-middle class groups may lead to accent levelling, whereby local speech forms are supplanted by supra-local or innovative intermediate ones. That is, the patterns observed here may be indicative of change in progress. Last, a comparison of the results for the (phonologically) paired variables (i u) and (e o) shows a strong tendency for Tyneside speakers to use these 'symmetrically', in that choice of variant in one variable predicts choice of variant in the other. It is suggested that the symmetry in the system is exploited by Tyneside speakers for the purposes of indicating social affiliation and identity, and is in this sense an extra sociolinguistic resource upon which speakers can draw. In addition, the variants of (3) are discussed with reference to the reported merger of this variable with (a); it is suggested that the apparent 'unmerging' of these two classes is unproblematic from a structural point of view, as the putative (3)—(o) merger appears never to have been completed.

Okati, Farideh. "The Vowel Systems of Five Iranian Balochi Dialects."

Abstract:
The vowel systems of five selected Iranian Balochi dialects are investigated in this study, which is the first work to apply empirical acoustic analysis to a large body of recorded data on the vowel inventories of different Balochi dialects spoken in Iran. The selected dialects are spoken in the five regions of Sistan (SI), Saravan (SA), Khash (KH), Iranshahr (IR), and Chabahar (CH) located in the province Sistan and Baluchestan in southeast Iran. The aim of the present fieldwork-based survey is to study how similar the vowel systems of these dialects are to the Common Balochi vowel system (i, iː, u, uː, a, aː, eː, oː), which is represented as the vowel inventory for the Balochi dialects in general, as well as how similar these dialects are to one another.  The investigation shows that length is contrastive in these dialects, although the durational dif-ferences between the long and short counterparts are quite small in some dialects. The study also reveals that there are some differences between the vowel systems of these dialects and the Com-mon Balochi sound inventory. The Common Balochi short /i/ vowel is modified to short /e/ in these dialects, and a strong tendency for the long /eː/ and /oː/ to become the diphthongs ie and ue, respec-tively, is observed in some of the investigated dialects, specifically in KH, which shows heavier diphthongization than the other dialects. It is also observed, especially in SI, SA, and CH, that the short /u/ shows strong tendencies to shift towards a lower position of an [o] vowel. In SI and SA, this shift seems to be a correlate of syllable structure, with lowering occurring mostly in closed syllables. It is possible that Persian, as the dominant language in the area, has had an influence on these dialects and caused a lowering tendency among the higher vowels.  The vowel systems in these dialects differ slightly from each other. Phonemically, the pairs e/eː, a/aː, u/uː, and the long vowels /iː/ and /oː/ are suggested for IR; the pairs a/aː, u/uː, the short /e/ and the long /iː/ as well as the diphthongs /ie/ and /ue/ substituted for the long /eː/ and /oː/, respectively, are suggested for KH; and finally the pairs e/eː, a/aː, o/oː, and the long vowels /iː/ and /uː/, which make a more symmetrical inventory, are suggested for the SI, SA, and CH dialects. In general, the vowels in these dialects show a range of phonetic variations. In addition, processes of fronting, which is most common in coronal contexts, and nasalization, which mostly occurs in nasal envi-ronments, are observed in the data researched.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the phonetic difficulties that learners of English as a foreign language will encounter. This research wants tó propose a new point of view; a different and wider angle on how to approach this issue. Instead of comparing only one or two languages to English, it will compare 4 (Spanish, French, German and Russian) with similar or different characteristics based on vowel system and isochrony. The phonetic mistakes will then be analyzed through spectrography, which could help us better understand the nature of the problem.

Abstract:
The present study aims to address the question of how vowel quality varies between rural and town-dwelling male speakers of Irish-English in South Roscommon, Ireland. Previous studies have identified four distinct varieties of Irish-English in Ireland: the Eastern, South &Western, Midland, and Northern varieties, loosely based on the political provinces of Munster, Connaught, Leinster, and Ulster. County Roscommon straddles the provinces of Connaught and Leinster, complicating the presence of phonological features associated with one of two different ‘accent regions’. The last phonological study carried out in Roscommon was by Patrick Leo Henry in 1957. While this was a promising start in assessing regional distinctions, rural ones in particular, the lack of recent studies leaves a sizeable gap that does not address modern changes in the linguistic landscape of Ireland, nor the availability of modern methods of acoustic analysis. In particular, the present study investigates the pre-nasal merging of front unrounded vowels /ɛ/ and /ɪ/, vowel centralization, and a lower /æ/, associated with the Western variety of Irish English. Factors such as supraregionalization lead to my hypothesis that rural speakers will demonstrate higher frequency of the vowel features associated with the Western variety. To assess the frequency of certain vowel sounds, twenty participants were recorded and formant data was extracted for F1 and F2 values of the tokens. It was found that the rural speakers in Roscommon demonstrated a more prominent merger between /ɛ/ and /ɪ/, a lower [æ], and the rural speakers demonstrated an overall trend toward centralization.

This thesis is situated in the research field on the relation between phonology and writing acquisition from the idea that the phonological inventory of the child can be modified with the appropriation of the written system. The main objective of this present study is to describe and analyze data related to the spelling of vowels in the PB initial writing in order to contribute to the discussion concerning the formation and the phonological representation of the vowel system of the Portuguese from the Representational Model based on Restrictions Clements (2001 ) . The specific objectives are a) to describe and analyze the related spelling errors of vowels extracted from written productions of Brazilian children who attend the early years of school ; b ) discuss the written data by comparing them with the results obtained in studies on the process of acquisition of phonological vowel system of PB ; c ) discuss the written data comparing them with the results obtained in studies relating to linguistic variation in relation to the functioning of the vowel system ; d ) discuss the relationship between the written data and data obtained from acoustic analysis regarding the members of the PB ; e) reflect on the constitution and representation of the vowel system from the relationship established between the initial writing and phonology . The analyzed data were obtained by incorporation of 3 samples . The first sample data is consisted from spontaneous writing of children in the public school and private school. The second data is controlled through specific writing instruments that allowed the production of words with different vowels in unstressed positions . The final sample consists of oral production data of children from public and private schools with the aim to analyze the production of pretonic vowels susceptible to raising no apparent cause or result of vowel harmony . The results obtained in the analysis of written data show that most of the spelling errors are related to the coronal vowel in comparison with the dorsal vowel and with the advancement of the early primary grades must be a general decrease in the number of errors . In oral production data was observed that children initially use high and intermediate vowels to produce the process of lifting device and that , with the advancement in the series ,the students start to pronounce the sound of a mid vowel . From The Model -Based Economy Representational Restrictions Clements (2001 ) , one can notice that the pretonic child system is initially made up of high and low vowels , ie he/she would have observed what is distinctive in his/her language . Later on, with the acquisition of writing, an update knowledge would happen and children would understand the existence of variation in the middle vowels, thus forming a system of five pretonic vowels.

Abstract:
Speech plays a vital role in human communication. Selection of relevant acoustic speech features is key to in the design of any system using speech processing. For some 40 years, speech was typically considered as a sequence of quasi-stable portions of signal (vowels) separated by transitions (consonants). Despite a wealth of studies that clearly document the importance of coarticulation, and reveal that articulatory and acoustic targets are not context-independent, the view that each vowel has an acoustic target that can be specified in a context-independent manner remains widespread. This point of view entails strong limitations. It is well known that formant frequencies are acoustic characteristics that bear a clear relationship with speech production, and that can distinguish among vowels. Therefore, vowels are generally described with static articulatory configurations represented by targets in the acoustic space, typically by formant frequencies in F1-F2 and F2-F3 planes. Plosive consonants can be described in terms of places of articulation, represented by locus or locus equations in an acoustic plane. But formant frequencies trajectories in fluent speech rarely display a steady state for each vowel. They vary with speaker, consonantal environment (co-articulation) and speaking rate (relating to continuum between hypo- and hyper-articulation). In view of inherent limitations of static approaches, the approach adopted here consists in studying both vowels and consonants from a dynamic point of view.Firstly we studied the effects of the impulse response at the beginning, at the end and during transitions of the signal both in the speech signal and at the perception level. Variations of the phases of the components were then examined. Results show that the effects of these parameters can be observed in spectrograms. Crucially, the amplitudes of the spectral components distinguished under the approach advocated here are sufficient for perceptual discrimination. From this result, for all speech analysis, we only focus on amplitude domain, deliberately leaving aside phase information. Next we extent the work to vowel-consonant-vowel perception from a dynamic point of view. These perceptual results, together with those obtained earlier by Carré (2009a), show that vowel-to-vowel and vowel-consonant-vowel stimuli can be characterized and separated by the direction and rate of the transitions on formant plane, even when absolute frequency values are outside the vowel triangle (i.e. the vowel acoustic space in absolute values).Due to limitations of formant measurements, the dynamic approach needs to develop new tools, based on parameters that can replace formant frequency estimation. Spectral Subband Centroid Frequency (SSCF) features was studied. Comparison with vowel formant frequencies show that SSCFs can replace formant frequencies and act as “pseudo-formant” even during consonant production. On this basis, SSCF is used as a tool to compute dynamic characteristics. We propose a new way to model the dynamic speech features: we called it SSCF Angles. Our analysis work on SSCF Angles were performed on transitions of vowel-to-vowel (V1V2) sequences of both Vietnamese and French. SSCF Angles appear as reliable and robust parameters. For each language, the analysis results show that: (i) SSCF Angles can distinguish V1V2 transitions; (ii) V1V2 and V2V1 have symmetrical properties on the acoustic domain based on SSCF Angles; (iii) SSCF Angles for male and female are fairly similar in the same studied transition of context V1V2; and (iv) they are also more or less invariant for speech rate (normal speech rate and fast one). And finally, these dynamic acoustic speech features are used in Vietnamese automatic speech recognition system with several obtained interesting results

Abstract:
Most sociolinguistic studies dealing with the different varieties of French state that a global levelling phenomenon is currently happening in France. Regional features are claimed to be ironed out and replaced by a supra-local norm of prestige; this phenomenon is now known as “l’exception française”. This PhD thesis offers a multidimensional study (from both a socio-phonological and phonetic-acoustical point of view) of the segmental features of the Toulouse and Marseille spoken French varieties. We aim at describing the current dynamics of these systems as well as testing the levelling hypothesis. We also discuss the sociolinguistic factors at work behind the current changes observed in these varieties. Our work is based on data that we collected by following the protocol and methodology of the PFC (Phonologiedu Français Contemporain : usages variétés et structures) and LVTI (Langue, Ville, Travail, Identité) research programmes. We mainly focus on the vocalic system and more particularly on mid-vowels, schwa and nasal vowels. Throughout this work, we test the ability of formal phonological theoretical frameworks to model data displaying a high variation. We particularly confront the Dependency Phonology framework with the results of our analyses to assess its advantages and its limits

Abstract:
The mammalian auditory system generates representations of the physical world in terms of auditory objects. To decide which object class a particular sound belongs to, the auditory system must recognise the patterns of acoustic components that form the acoustic “fingerprint” of the sound’s auditory class. Where in the central auditory system such patterns are detected and what form the neural processing takes that underlies their detection are unanswered questions in sensory neurophysiology. In the research conducted for this thesis I used artificial vowel sounds to explore the neural and perceptual characteristics of auditory object recognition in rats. I recorded cortical responses from the primary auditory cortex (A1) in anaesthetised rats and determined how well the spiking responses, evoked by artificial vowels, resolve the spectral components that define vowel classes in human perception. The recognition of an auditory class rests on the ability to detect the combination of spectral components that all member sounds of the class share. I generated and evaluated models of the integration by A1 responses of the acoustic components that define human vowels classes. The hippocampus is a candidate area for neural responses that are specific to particular object classes. In this thesis I also report the results of a collaboration during which we investigated how the hippocampus responds to vowels in awake behaving animals. Finally, I explored the processing of vowels behaviourally, testing the perceptual ability of rats to discriminate and classify vowels and in particular whether rats use combinations of spectral components to recognise members of vowel classes. For the behavioural training I built a novel integrated housing and training cage that allows rats to train themselves in auditory recognition tasks. Combining the results and methods presented in this thesis will help reveal how the mammalian auditory system recognises auditory objects.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc (Computer Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
Super cially realistic worlds can easily be created using fractal landscapes. Such landscapes are limited in that real-world geological features such as caves and overhangs are impossible using a standard height eld representation. Interactive, realistic simulation of terrain evolution on such landscapes has proved elusive and does not generally provide direct control over the placement of landscape features. This thesis presents an interactive terrain design system, which enables the user to generate localised, speci c terrain features, as well as generalised global characteristics. A fully volumetric terrain representation is used to allow varied three dimensional terrain features. A hybrid rendering algorithm is employed to e ciently render the volumetric data set, while allowing interactive terrain deformation. Small terrain deformation is enabled using voxel carving, while larger terrain features is generated using an adoption of the Wires algorithm. A fractal river network generation technique is presented and adopted for voxel terrain. These tools provide the user with interactive feedback to allow for more dynamic terrain design.

Abstract:
The industrial application of active magnetic bearings is expanding. This expansion is a driving force in the integration of AMBs. The Magnetic Bearing Modelling and Control (MBMC) research group in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, North-West University is accordingly compelled to expand their research to the application of embedded control systems. The aim of this study is to develop an embedded controller for an active magnetic bearing in order to establish a DSP platform for future research in embedded control systems. The embedded controller developed during this study is required to be capable of actively controlling a spindle with a rotational speed of 60 000 rpm. It is further required that the embedded controller is capable of stand-alone operation, scalable in terms of the number of axes controlled and flexible in terms of the control algorithm implementation. A TMS320F2812 DSP is selected for its processing speed, on-chip peripherals and available development tools such as the eZdsp® TMS320F2812 DSP Starter Kit, VisSim® Embedded Controls Developer and Code Composer Studio®. The interface of the embedded controller is designed for an existing double radial AMB model, which allows for the performance of the embedded controller to be compared to the existing PC-based controller. The AMB system exhibits a slightly higher second order equivalent stiffness and damping when using the embedded controller as opposed to the existing PC-based controller. The AMB system is also slightly less sensitive when using the embedded controller. This embedded controller establishes a DSP platform which can be used for further research into embedded control systems and advanced control algorithms. The knowledge gained and controller developed for this study serves as essential stepping stones towards the ultimate goal of AMB integration through the progression from a DSP to an FPGA and eventually an ASIC.

Abstract:
Ray tracing of sparse voxel octrees is a method of rendering images of 3D models, which could soon become practical for use in real time applications. This is desirable as ray tracing can produce very realistic visualizations, while voxel models can represent models with very fine geometric detail. For these reason the method has attracted significant attention in recent years, but no hardware solution has been published yet. This thesis presents a design of ray tracing of sparse voxel octrees in hardware. The objective is to show if it is sensible to implement the method in hardware, and if it could be integrated on modern GPUs alongside rasterization. To this end, the techniques used in existing software implementations of this method is reviewed, and an algorithm suitable for hardware implementation is presented. The problems of integrating the method with rasterization is explored, and the algorithm is analyzed and optimized to improve efficiency in hardware. A software implementation is presented, which supports the development of a hardware design. This design is implemented using the Verilog hardware description language, and it has been simulated and synthesized for an FPGA prototype. Multiple versions of the design has been synthesized and tested, and to evaluate the impact of design parameters the test results from these designs is presented. The thesis provides a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed design, and the results indicate that the algorithm is well suited for hardware implementation. Although real-time performance was not achieved, there are indications that further optimizations should allow real-time performance on the same platform, and that a full scale implementation on a modern GPU could probably allow ray tracing with a quality which is competitive with rasterization.

Material serves as the first touchpoint between an object and a person. In current product development, material together with color and finishing is regarded as a separate entity from the form and function design. Every material needs to be paired with a series of optimal manufacturing processes for the desired effect. In many cases, this is handled with material design specialists. People perceive a material primarily by its surface: chromatic, tactile, and decorative identity it displays or the temperature and hardness when touching it. Typically, this material surface can be viewed as a two-dimensional entity that reveals limited-expression and information to be delivered via human intervention. In this thesis, we propose to get away from surface obsession in object and industrial design, by adding another dimension to the material interface. By embedding information into three-dimensional matter, we introduce volumetric material: a new material organization that responds directly to the user intervention or the environment. With multi-material 3D printing, we envision a future in product development where the design of surface detail, texture, reflexivity can finally be merged with the overall product composition from the beginning of the design process. With voxel printing capability, we designed and tested material interface with depth and explored volumetric behavior that is both visually and functionally meaningful to the user, and discussed the results.

This thesis explores Voxel Cone Tracing as a possible Global Illumination solutionon mobile devices. The rapid increase of performance on low-power graphics processors hasmade a big impact. More advanced computer graphics algorithms are now possi-ble on a new range of devices. One category of such algorithms is Global Illumi-nation, which calculates realistic lighting in rendered scenes. The combinationof advanced graphics and portability is of special interest to implement in newtechnologies like Virtual Reality. The result of this thesis shows that while possible to implement a state of theart Global Illumination algorithm, the performance of mobile Graphics Process-ing Units is still not enough to make it usable in real-time.

Abstract:

The thesis presents a user interface design aimed at the scenario where a dual representation of a volume is desired in order to emphasize certain parts of a volume using surface graphics while the rest of the volume is rendered using direct volume rendering techniques. A typical situation in which this configuration can prove useful is when studying images acquired for medical purposes. Sometimes the user wants to identify and represent an organ using an opaque surface in an otherwise partly opaque visualization of the volume data set. The design is based on the visualization library VTK along with Trolltech Qt, a GUI Toolkit in C++. The choice of using VTK as a visualization library was made after evaluating similar systems. The report includes a state of the art chapter, the requirements for the system, the system design and the results achieved after implementing the design are shown.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to demonstrate the central role of opioid system in developing and maintaining addiction in two behavioural addiction models: sport addiction and anorexia nervosa. It presents an original, multidisciplinary and transversal approach using modern and innovative tools, with a brain imagery using [11C]-diprenorphine PET-scan as main process. We attempt to get receptor density mapping using a SRTM model. Images obtained by this way were then exploited by voxel-based analysis using SPM12. Statistical parametric comparisons include several variables, covariables and regression parameters extracted from complementary exams (psychometric tests, anthropometric measurements, biological samplings especially peripheric circulating opioids assessment by ELISA technic). These analyses demonstrate the complexity of addictive mechanisms in these two models, with an indirect role of opioid system which seems to work by modulation of dopaminergic mesolimbic reward system. However, we also find several differences and inhomogeneities in these two behavioural addictions which indicate existence of various sensitivity and different mechanisms among subjects. This asks the question of phenotyping and genetics underlying these phenomena, needing new studies with a long-term perspective of clinical and therapeutic possibilities

The plant reproductive biology involves all the features (morphological, anatomical or physiological) of a species that participate in the reproduction of its individuals. The Fabaceae family is one of the most important of the Cerrado, the genus Bauhinia being one of the most diversified. Several studies with species of Bauhinia L. showed diversity in floral shapes, reproductive phenology, reproductive system and interactions with different groups of pollinators. In general, the Bauhinia species are outcrossing and have low reproductive efficiency. Bauhinia brevipes is common in the municipality of Goiás-GO and has floral features compatible with the syndrome chiropterophily: white flowers that release a strong odour overnight, producing large amounts of nectar with low sugar concentration. Flowers of B. brevipes may have reduced ovaries or anthers with low production of viable pollen, indicating that this species moves towards sexual separation in some flowers. Although the visit the bats to flowers were not seen, their flights over the plants were observed. A test of exclusion of diurnal pollinators showed the efficiency of nocturnal pollinators in B. brevipes. The flowers of B. brevipes not have herkogamy as the main factor to avoid inbreeding, but some flowers positioned above the anthers stigma were observed. The species present gametophytic selfincompatibility and therefore requires the pollinators visit to ensure pollinating pollen exchange among different and unrelated plants. Bauhinia brevipes has an average 20% of reproductive efficiency. In general, the species showed a high level of pollen limitation (0.73). The largest fruit production occurs in the middle position of the inflorescence. Most of fruit produced occurs in the median position of the inflorescence, when possibly the availability of pollen in the system is higher and resources are available for their development.

Resumo: The spatial distribution pattern of tree species is one of the most important factors for the understanding of the ecological interrelationships occurring in a population or community forestry, it is vital to the understanding of how a certain species uses the resources available to establish and reproduce in a given space. Interpretation of the results of the spatial analysis of tree species provides significant subsidies for the understanding of these phenomena and indication of individuals for genetic conservation programs and forest promotion. In this context, the objective of the work was to study the spatial distribution of six natural populations of arborea specie baru (Dipteryx alata Vogel.) using the Moran index associated with a Geographic Information System and descriptive statistics of their silvicultural attributes. These populations are located in the municipalities of Paulo de Faria/SP, Campina Verde/MG, Ituiutaba/MG, Brasilândia/MS, Campo Grande/MS e Itarumã/GO. All populations had a growth over 45 cm in relation to the DAP (Diameter at Breast Height) attribute. Taking into account that the DAP attribute has a higher dendrochronological correlation, the estimated age of these natural populations would be in the range between 40 and 63 years. As regards the calculation of Moran index, populations of Ituiutaba and Itarumã presented random spatial distribution pattern, pointing high variability among its individuals, so the collection of seeds for ex situ conserv... CARCHIA, MARCO. "Lingue senza consonanti bilabiali." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Genova, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11567/1035364.

Full text
Abstract:
The existence of consonants at the velar, alveolar and bilabial places of articulation seems to represent the basis of the structure of a consonant system, described by many authors according to various approaches. Nevertheless a few scattered references to languages without any bilabial sound can be found in literature, especially by authors dealing with American native languages. For this reason, the presence of bilabial consonants cannot be considered as a universal of language but rather a linguistic tendency, admitting, as such, some exceptions. The above mentioned references describe the phenomenon by a merely synchronic perspective, leaving thereby aside, not only extinct languages, but also those showing at a distant time in the past the lack of these sounds, which were later introduced in their consonant inventory. Based on this background and on the results brought out by the analysis of the reference material, this dissertation focuses mainly on the three following points. 1) A mapping of all languages and linguistic families involved, regardless whether they are living, extinct or characterized by this phenomenon at a distant time in the past, providing information about their distribution, their genealogy and their phonology, of course with particular emphasis on bilabial sounds. This first aim includes also a digital map of these languages, created by using the software QGIS. 2) Ascribing a complete lack of bilabial consonants to those proto-languages, whose reconstructions showed some loose ends with regard to these phonemes, as well as the lack of unanimity among the various authors dealing with them. This second objective was pursued primarily by means of typological studies. 3) A description of how the phenomenon occurs, based on the analysis of the different languages and linguistic families involved, along with a research on the explication of the possible reasons underlying it.

The manipulation of ruminal fermentation is a valuable tool aiming at increasing productivity and efficiency by using resources for animal feed. There are different kinds of tools, such as homogeneous mixing of feed, appropriate trough management, correct feed formulation, and the use of compounds (additives) aimed at assisting rumen fermentation process. The use of antibiotics in foods for animals as growth promoters is facing a social barrier, because of the waste and bacterial resistance that these products can be generating. For that reason the use of antibiotics for this end or at the diet of ruminants has been banned from the EU since January 2006. Therefore, some technologies have been developed to replace these products, and the use of vegetable extracts in ruminants nutrition as ruminal fermentation modulators have been largely studied. Some plants are rich in active compounds with antimicrobial power that makes them useful for animal nutrition. The crude extract of Pterodon Emarginatus Vogel presents sesquiterpenes and diterpenes in its composition, and β-caryophyllene is the most representative compound. Due to the limitations of using unknown products in animal nutrition, the techniques of in vitro digestibility and metabolic studies with animals cannulated in the rumen are largely used at the first stages of research. The objective of this study was to evaluate different dosages of Pterodon Emarginatus Vogel crude extract in vitro ruminal fermentation through a system of continuous culture of double flow. The treatments corresponded to four doses: 0%; 0.6%, 0.12%; and 0.24% of Pterodon Emarginatus Vogel crude extract in dry matter (DM) of the provided diet and a treatment with Sodium Monensin (30 ppm). The experimental design was entirely in randomized blocks with four replications and five treatments. The in vitro test showed a difference of (P<0.05) in the DM and OM digestibility between the treatments 0.24% of Pterodon Emarginatus Vogel crude extract and monensin. There was no difference (P>0.05) in the digestibility of NDF and ADF. The addition of the Pterodon Emarginatus Vogel extract increased the digestibility of DM and OM when compared with Sodium Monensin without effects on NDF and ADF. The treatments affected (P<0.05) acetic acid concentration, and the concentration 0.24% showed a decrease when compared with control treatment. The same happened with the relation between acetic and propionic acids, where 0.24% treatment produced a lower ratio compared with control and 0.06% treatments. The extract of Pterodon emarginatus Vogel has potential to modulate the ruminal fermentation because of its effect on ruminal microorganisms, and it is dose-dependent. Thus it can be used as an additive to manipulate ruminal fermentation and probably as a substitute of the sodic monensin. However, more studies must be carried out to answer the questions about the use of this substances, to clarify the effects of this products on the ruminal microorganisms, its effects on animal metabolism, parameters of in vivo ruminal fermentation, quantify the dosages to be used and quantify animal performance gain. The Culture System in Continuous Flow revealed to be an important alternative method and it showed accuracy for ruminal digestibility studies.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is creation the appropriate multimedia support for signals and system with continuous time. The understanding of this issue is very important, because the obligatory subject Signals and systems, exactly BSIS, is taught at the EST bachelor degree. The understanding is also necessary prerequisite to successful understanding next topics in other related subjects. The next part of this thesis is focused on one dimension discrete signals. Concretely, the aim of this part is a realization of software system. Designed system has some basic operations (the signal energy, the number of signal zero crossing etc.) with sound files and also some advance functions e.g. vowel seeking and separating in fluent speech. The system is divided into two main parts. The first one analyzes sound files, creates the new sound file with wanted vowel and matrices with important parameters for other processing. The second program computes with given data, which statistically evaluates in other steps. The final system can be useful for speaker recognition, his emotional status etc.
