Abstract:
Valine-glutamine (VQ) proteins are plant-specific proteins that play crucial roles in plant development as well as biotic and abiotic stress responses. VQ genes have been identified in various plants; however, there are no systematic reports in Cicer arietinum or Medicago truncatula. Herein, we identified 19 and 32 VQ genes in C. arietinum and M. truncatula, respectively. A total of these VQ genes were divided into eight groups (I–VIII) based on phylogenetic analysis. Gene structure analyses and motif patterns revealed that these VQ genes might have originated from a common ancestor. In silico analyses demonstrated that these VQ genes were expressed in different tissues. qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the VQ genes were differentially regulated during multiple abiotic stresses. This report presents the first systematic analysis of VQ genes from C. arietinum and M. truncatula and provides a solid foundation for further research of the specific functions of VQ proteins.

Abstract:
VQ motif-containing proteins play crucial roles in plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, no information of VQ motif-containing proteins has been studied at the microevolutionary level in species of Fragaria. In this study, a total of 19, 21, 23, 23, 23, and 25 genes containing the VQ motif were identified from the genomes of F. nipponica, F. iinumae, F. orientalis, F. vesca, F. nubicola, and F. x ananassa, respectively. We classified the VQ genes into 15 clades with grapevine VQ genes, which indicated that at least 15 ancient VQ genes existed before the divergence of the six studied species of Fragaria. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that 28 gene duplication events have occurred in the evolutionary process of the six species of Fragaria. Structural analysis showed that most of the VQ genes have no introns and that VQ proteins in each clade have a similar motif composition. The majority of gene pairs had Ka/Ks ratios less than 1, which illustrated that most of the VQ genes underwent purifying selection in the six species of Fragaria. Four types of cis-elements in promoters of VQ genes were detected, which is an important basis for further studies about plant stress responses. Furthermore, the expression analysis of FvVQ genes indicated that these genes are expressed differentially in the examined organs and tissues. The identification of VQ genes and the analysis of VQ gene duplication and polyploidization events in the six species of Fragaria provide important information on the evolutionary fate of VQ genes during the divergence of the six species of Fragaria.

With the purpose of learning and utilizing explicit and dense topic embeddings, we propose three variations of novel vector-quantization-based topic models (VQ-TMs): (1) Hard VQ-TM, (2) Soft VQ-TM, and (3) Multi-View Soft VQ-TM. The model family capitalize on vector quantization techniques, embedded input documents, and viewing words as mixtures of topics. Guided by a comprehensive set of evaluation metrics, we conduct systematic quantitative and qualitative empirical studies, and demonstrate the superior performance of VQ-TMs compared to important baseline models. Through a unique case study on code generation from natural language descriptions, we further illustrate the power of VQ-TMs in downstream tasks.

Abstract:
VQ genes play important roles in plant development, growth, and stress responses. However, little information regarding the functions of VQ genes is available for Eucalyptus grandis. In our study, genome-wide characterization and identification of VQ genes were performed in E. grandis. Results showed that 27 VQ genes, which divided into seven sub-families (I–VII), were found, and all but two VQ genes showed no intron by gene structure and conserved motif analysis. To further identify the function of EgrVQ proteins, gene expression analyses were also developed under hormone treatments (brassinosteroids, methyl jasmonate, salicylic acid, and abscisic acid) and abiotic conditions (salt stress, cold 4 °C, and heat 42 °C). The results of a quantitative real-time PCR analysis indicated that the EgrVQs were variously expressed under different hormone treatments and abiotic stressors. Our study provides a comprehensive overview of VQ genes in E. grandis, which will be beneficial in the molecular breeding of E. grandis to promote its resistance to abiotic stressors; the results also provide a basis from which to conduct further investigation into the functions of VQ genes in E. grandis.

Abstract:
An accurate prediction of sulfur content is very important for the proper operation and product quality control in hydrodesulfurization (HDS) process. For this purpose, a reliable data- driven soft sensors utilizing Support Vector Regression (SVR) was developed and the effects of integrating Vector Quantization (VQ) with Principle Component Analysis (PCA) were studied on the assessment of this soft sensor. First, in pre-processing step the PCA and VQ techniques were used to reduce dimensions of the original input datasets. Then, the compressed datasets were used as input variables for the SVR model. Experimental data from the HDS setup were employed to validate the proposed integrated model. The integration of VQ/PCA techniques with SVR model was able to increase the prediction accuracy of SVR. The obtained results show that integrated technique (VQ-SVR) was better than (PCA-SVR) in prediction accuracy. Also, VQ decreased the sum of the training and test time of SVR model in comparison with PCA. For further evaluation, the performance of VQ-SVR model was also compared to that of SVR. The obtained results indicated that VQ-SVR model delivered the best satisfactory predicting performance (AARE= 0.0668 and R2= 0.995) in comparison with investigated models.

VQ-domain proteins are known to interact with WRKY transcription factors and have been reported to be involved in plant defence responses to environmental stresses in Arabidopsis. Thus, elucidation of the defence mechanisms during the interaction of VQ-domain proteins and WRKY transcription factors could provide useful insights into the regulation of VQ-domain protein-mediated WRKY transcription factors. As the focus of this review, we summarize the genomic analysis of the VQ-domain proteins as one of the WRKY-interacting proteins and their biological effects during plant stress conditions in Arabidopsis and rice.

Abstract:
Background VQ proteins, the plant-specific transcription factors, are involved in plant development and multiple stresses; however, only few articles systematic reported the VQ genes in soybean. Methods In total, we identified 75 GmVQ genes, which were classified into 7 groups (I-VII). Conserved domain analysis indicated that VQ gene family members all contain the VQ domains. VQ genes from the same evolutionary branches of soybean shared similar motifs and structures. Promoter analysis revealed that cis-elements related to stress responses, phytohormone responses and controlling physical as well as reproductive growth. Based on the RNA-seq and qRT-PCR analysis, GmVQ genes were showed expressing in nine tissues, suggesting their putative function in many aspects of plant growth and development as well as response to stress in Glycine max. Results This study aims to understand the roles of VQ genes in various development processes and their expression patterns in responses to stimuli. Our results provide basic information in identification and classification of GmVQ genes. Further experimental analysis will allows us to know the functions of GmVQs participation in plant growth and stress responses.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates efficient codeword search algorithms and efficient clustering algorithms for vector quantization (VQ), improved codebook design algorithms and improved codebook index assignment for noisy channels. In the investigation of codeword search algorithms, several fast approaches are proposed, such as the improved absolute error inequality criterion, improved algorithms for partial distortion search, improved algorithms for extended partial distortion search and a fast approximate search algorithm. The bound for the Minkowski metric is derived as the generalised form of the partial distortion search algorithm, hypercube approach, absolute error inequality criterion and improved absolute error inequality criterion. This bound provides a better criterion than the absolute error inequality elimination rule on the Euclidean distortion measure. For the Minkowski metric of order n, this bound contributes the elimination criterion from the L1 metric to the Ln metric. This bound is also extended to the bound for the quadratic metric by using methods of metric transformation. The improved absolute error inequality criterion is also extended to the generalised form of the mean-distance-ordered search algorithm for VQ image coding. Several fast clustering algorithms for vector quantization based on the LBG algorithm are presented. Genetic algorithms are applied to codebook design to derive improved codevectors. The approach of stochastic relaxation is also applied to the mutation step of the genetic algorithm to further improve the codebook design algorithm. Vector quantization is very efficient for data compression of speech and images where the binary indices of the optimally chosen codevectors are used. The effect of channel errors is to cause errors in the received indices. A parallel genetic algorithm is applied to assign the codevector indices for noisy channels so as to minimize the distortion due to bit errors. The novel property of multiple global optima and the average distortion of the memoryless binary symmetric channel for any bit error in the assignment of codebook index are also introduced.

Abstract:
ln this dissertation, it is done a study about a new (non-parametric) method or procedure to estimate the volatility recently proposed in literatures, Realized Volatility (RV), which can be obtained by sumrning of cross-products of high frequency intraday returns. The main objective of this study is to perform an empirical application of RV to the PSI20 index, focused on the conditional and unconditional properties, and to compare with the results that have appeared in literature. Considering two series of frequencies 5 and 30 minutes we find for both that the distributions of RV are not normal and are highly skewed to the right, while the log of RV are approximately normal, as are the distributions of the standardized returns. The log of RV show strong temporal dependence and appear to be well described by long memory processes. Our results are consistent with the findings in literature. We also find that the log of RV exhibit the asymmetric volatility effect .Considering the volatility as an observable variable, instead of latent as in ARCH (AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedastic) and Stochastic Volatility (VE) models, we modelled the dynarnic characteristics of the log of RV series using ARFIMA (Autoregressive Fractionally Integrated Moving Average) models.

The huge amount of multimedia content accumulated daily has demanded the development of effective retrieval approaches. In this context, speaker recognition tools capable of automatically identifying a person through their voice are of great relevance. This work presents a novel speaker recognition approach modelled as a retrieval scenario and using recent unsupervised learning methods. The proposed approach considers Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) and Perceptual Linear Prediction Coefficients (PLPs) as features along with multiple modelling approaches, namely Vector Quantization, Gaussian Mixture Models and i-vector to compute distances among audio objects. Next, rank-based unsupervised learning methods are used for improving the effectiveness of retrieval results and, based on a K-Nearest Neighbors classifier, an identity decision is taken. Several experiments were conducted considering three public datasets from different scenarios, carrying noise from various sources. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve very high effectiveness results. In addition, effectiveness gains up to +318% were obtained by the unsupervised learning procedure in a speaker retrieval task. Also, accuracy gains up to +7,05% were obtained by the unsupervised learning procedure in a speaker identification task considering recordings from different domains.

This thesis explores the possibilities of avoiding the issues generally associated with compression of noisy imagery, through the usage of vector quantization. By utilizing the learning aspects of vector quantization, image processing operations such as noise reduction could be implemented in a straightforward way. Several techniques are presented and evaluated. A direct comparison shows that for noisy imagery, vector quantization, in spite of it's simplicity, has clear advantages over MPEG-4 encoding.

A quadtree-based BTC-VQ coding method is proposed in the thesis for image compression. First, the image is partitioned into nonoverlapping 32*32 subimages. For each subimage, according to the smoothness of the gray values, the subimage is partioned using a quadtree segmentation. In order to improve the efficiency of the conventional quadtree structure, we propose three new methods, called position quadtree, bitmap quadtree, and position-VQ quadtree, to encode the segmentation quadtree. The number of bits needed to encode the segmentation quadtree is reduced significantly by using these three new methods. While coding the segmented blocks, the blocks with the size of 32*32, 16*16, and 8*8 are all coded using the mean value because they are identified as smooth blocks. On the other hand, the blocks with the size of 4*4 are classified into three categories: the smooth blocks, the texture blocks, and the edge blocks. A smooth block is coded using the mean value of the block. A texture block is coded with a 2-level BTC-VQ, while each edge block is coded using a 3-level BTC with VQ technique to improve the perceived quality. Simulation results show that good visual quality and low MSE are obtained. In addition, the bit rate is in the range of 0.7-0.9 bpp when the proposed QTBTC- VQ is used.

Abstract:
An LGA (Land Grid Array) laminate-based epoxy-molded RF SiP (system-in-package) containing four wirebonded and three flip-chip dice is qualified using a PoF (Physics-of-Failure) approach. The process includes design and execution of accelerated stress testing. The test results are extrapolated to field environments using acceleration factors derived from virtual qualification (VQ) and virtual testing (VT). In the VQ step, life-cycle loading experienced by the specimen is simulated, potential failure sites are identified, and reliability assessment models for each failure mode are applied for damage analysis. The virtual testing (VT) step is similar to VQ, except that the accelerated loading developed for the experimentation phase is used. The output of the process is a lifetime assessment, based on the accelerated test results and the acceleration factors derived from PoF considerations.
