Abstract:

This article demonstrates directions for improving the operational management of high-tech en-terprises using an analysis based on the resource approach with the definition of VRIN-signs of resources and their common derivative – VRIN-efficiency. Using the classical concept of product development from introduction to stagnation and the VRIN ap-proach, a method of operational management analysis of the high-tech enterprises activity was developed. This makes it possible to determine the type of operational management according to VRIN-efficiency in connec-tion with the stages of the VRIN-results life cycle. The author's classification of types of operational management of high-tech enterprises by VRIN-effectiveness criteria is presented, and the characteristics are described in detail. The article presents the results of quantitative evaluation methods using financial statements of two high-tech enterprises: “UralResurs” and “Ural-Siberian Machine-Building Plant” for two years. On the basis of the assessment of their VRIN effectiveness, the types of operational management for each high-tech enterprise were determined.

Abstract:

The article presents a methodological approach to conducting a factor analysis of the innova-tive potential of an industrial enterprise. The author's concept of “innovative potential” has been clarified as the difference between the “innovative capacity” and the “innovative program” of the enterprise. An orga-nized classification has been presented for the methods of assessing the capacity of the innovative products market based on which a conclusion has been made on the applicability of the “top-down” method to as-sessing the market capacity and VRIN results of enterprise activity in a research study. The original classification has been presented for the VRIN indicators of a high-technology enter-prise resources, which allowed to reveal the parameters of these resources influencing the level of the enterprise competitiveness. The relevance and eligibility of introducing the terms of VRIN result and VRIN efficiency to a research study has been explained. The article presents the methods of qualitative (expert) and quantitative assessment of VRIN re-sources, VRIN results and VRIN efficiency of the activity of an industrial enterprise, which allow to re-veal the necessity of performing a factor analysis of the enterprise's innovative potential. The results of testing the qualitative (expert) methods of assessment of VRIN efficiency have been presented on the example of OOO PK “UralResurs” and OOO “Ural and Siberia Mechnical Engineering Plant” companies. The relevance of an in-depth qualitative analysis of VRIN efficiency has been ex-plained for OOO “Ural and Siberia Mechnical Engineering Plant”.

Abstract:

PurposeBuilding on the resource-based view (RBV) perspective of common resources, the objective of this paper is to empirically examine the impact of container terminals' common resources (i.e. government support and terminal resources) on resource bundling strategies and subsequent effect on service performance.Design/methodology/approachUsing cross-sectional survey data collected from a sample of 216 respondents of Indonesia's container terminals, this study used structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the hypothesised relationships between common resources, resource bundling strategies and service performance.FindingsGovernment support and terminal resources (personnel and physical), both as sources of common resources when bundled effectively, are found to have positive and significant effect on terminal service performance. The resource bundling strategies fully mediate the relationship between container terminals' common resources and service performance.Practical implicationsThe study introduces the notion of common resources to container terminal managers in contrast to the valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable (VRIN) types. It is recommended that appropriate resource bundling strategies can turn the common resources into VRIN resources that can be used to obtain desired service performance.Originality/valueRBV theorists suggest that resources that are VRIN types can be the source of competitive advantage. However, the resources can also be common, basic and valuable, a fact that is rarely investigated in the literature. These common resources can be bundled judiciously with other pre-existing resources to create VRIN resources. This research enriches the RBV by empirically validating that VRIN resources are embedded within various common resources bundling strategies.

Abstract:

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory–Second Edition includes a new validity scale, the VRIN scale, intended to detect random responding. High scores are viewed as casting suspicion on the validity of the profile. For the present study, the authors evaluated some of the complexities of the VRIN scale including its interaction with the F scale. In particular, we tested two hypotheses. First is that among psychotically disturbed test takers, some inconsistent responding is an integral and expected mode of responding to a self-report measure. That is, in an inpatient psychiatric population increased confused responding (high VRIN score) is related in predictable ways to increased endorsement of pychotic scales and two-point codes and to increased psychotic diagnoses. The second hypothesis is a corollary—that the absence of inconsistency (low VRIN) in a protocol indicating acute distress (high F) may indicate that a respondent is being too consistent in presenting self as having severe difficulties. In this case, the rest of the protocol may be an exaggerated description of the clinical presentation. A sample of 521 psychiatric inpatients was used to evaluate these hypotheses. Some support for both hypotheses is reported. Further studies are recommended to evaluate the hypotheses.

Abstract:

The increase in VRIN (valuable, rare, imperfectly imitable, and not substitutable re-sources) efficiency of a high-tech enterprise is ensured by the outpacing growth rates of innovative re-sults over the growth rates of resources spent producing these results. Quantum economic analysis classifies investment projects according to the “Product – Company – Market” development and assumes their division into viable and non-viable. This article identifies the impact of measures to increase VRIN efficiency and improve the import substitution strategy of a high-tech enterprise on changing the position of enterprises in the coordinate system of quantum economic analysis. The study justifies changes in the type of operational management and the strategy of innovative development of high-tech enterprises in 2023. These determine the movement of the enterprise in the coordinate system of quantum economic analysis, based on the results of recommendations made on the basis of determining VRIN efficiency of their activities for 2020–2022. Research methods include quantum economic analysis, VRIN efficiency analysis, and comparative analysis. The hypothesis is that the influence of VRIN efficiency on the change in the position of the en-terprise in the coordinate system “Product – Company – Market” will allow the development of specific management solutions in terms of the components “Product” and “Company” and thereby accelerate the pace of innovative development. The results of the study revealed that the recommendations led to an improvement in the compa-ny's place in the “Product – Company – Market” coordinate system, which expands the use of quantum economic analysis. The conclusions can be used in the development of management solutions in the in-novative development of industrial enterprises.

Abstract:

Together, Penrosean and Barnean resource-based logic make up the dominant theoretical approach to understanding firm growth. While extant literature focuses on a common lineage between Penrosean theory and the resource-based view (RBV), we explicate divergence at these origins of resource-based theorizing and subject the growth implications of each to meta-analytic testing. RBV’s central tenets concern resources that meet valuable, rare, inimitable, and nonsubstitutable (VRIN) criteria, while Penrose’s theory discusses the versatility of resources. Theoretically, VRIN resources allow firms to exploit unique opportunities, while versatile resources allow firms to recombine resources in novel ways to create growth. Using meta-analytic techniques, we find that versatile resources are associated with higher levels of growth, whereas VRIN resources are not. We offer novel insights into alternative characteristics of resources derived from the same conceptualization of the firm, add greater specificity to the performance construct, and open up avenues for new theorizing on firm growth that is more closely aligned with Penrose’s theory.

Abstract:

This study examined the relationship between the Response Inconsistency Scale (RINC) of the Adolescent Personality Questionnaire and the Variable Response Inconsistency Scale (VRIN) of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory for Adolescents (MMPI-A) in a group of 62 participants. RINC and VRIN were positively correlated .30 ( p<.01). Additionally, both scales were correlated with five broad personality scales available from the Adolescent Personality Questionnaire. Scores on both inconsistency scales correlated negatively with those on Extraversion, Independence, and Self-control (but the latter two not significantly).

Abstract:

Objective: This study aims to analyze the influence of local endorsement on VRIN resources as part of the resource-based view (RBV) framework, which together with non-VRIN resources influences competitive advantage and then BUMDes performance. Theoretical Framework: The RBV framework is often used to look at resources that influence a company's competitive advantage, which then affects business performance. In this study, the adoption of psychological empowerment as part of the Rural Empowerment through Tourism Scale is used to measure citizen involvement in the form of local endorsement. Method: The study used a quantitative approach with purposive sampling to obtain 657 research respondents according to the established criteria. Online questionnaires were used to be distributed to various BUMDes in Indonesia. Results and Discussion: The results of the study show the influence of local endorsement on VRIN resources, which then also affects competitive advantage. Competitive advantage affects BUMDes performance. The results of the study also show that non-VRIN resources do not affect competitive advantage. These results emphasize community involvement in generating competitive advantage for BUMDes-managed tourist villages. Research Implications: The results of the study show the importance of focusing on intangible assets to develop tourist villages. Building local endorsement is a way to encourage local communities to be involved in managing tourist villages through BUMDes. Originality/Value: The adoption of the psychological empowerment concept from RETS provides a new direction in the context of developing competitive advantages in tourist villages, especially from the perspective of local communities.

Abstract:

The present report represents a replication and extension of the Berry et al. (1991) study examining the utility of the standard second edition of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) validity indices for detecting random responding. Specifically, relative to Berry et al., this study employs methodological improvements and investigates recently proposed alternative indices for detecting random responding. Another improvement includes the use of Bayesian statistics, including positive predictive power, negative predictive power, and hit rates, to select various cutting scores across three base rates of random responding. Results suggested that all validity indices studied differed significantly between random and valid protocols, although certain indices provided for more optimal hit rates in terms of classification. It is concluded that the alternative index, Variable Response Inconsistency ( VRIN) scale plus the Infrequency ( F) scale minus the Infrequency Back ( FB) scale ( VRIN + | F - FB|) provided for the highest hit rate across all examined base rates of random responding. However, VRIN also provided for highly accurate classification rates and has specific advantages including the scale's repeated validation in the literature, its ease of use, and empirical findings suggesting that the scale is insensitive to overreporting.

Abstract:

The Resource-Based View (RBV) Theory explains the importance of VRIN/O resources and characteristics for achieving the sustainable competitive advantage. The purpose of this SLR is to analyze the role of RBV in the process of achieving SCA, especially in the supply chain and customer information field, as well as the role of RBV in previous research and for independent startup companies. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was created based on previous research that was collected and analyzed to obtain facts that support the current research findings. Data collection was carried out using the literature review method by classifying and eliminating data sources that did not meet certain indices, which then resulted in the finding that the RBV Theory plays a role in the supply chain in forming SCA by creating VRIN/O resources, namely maintaining good relationships with suppliers and then deploying and using resources. power properly. In addition, customer information can be a resource in VRIN/O, which is expected to increase and maintain customer loyalty, which is part of a sustainable competitive advantage. Based on previous research, RBV is not suitable for application in operations management research and startups. However, it encourages entrepreneurs to be more creative in managing their limited resources. Efforts have been made to write and collect facts in this SLR as much as possible, but like research in general, this SLR cannot be free from the limitations of dependence on actualization of previously collected data sources.

Abstract:

This research aims to find out the significant difference between added value on sustainable competitive advantage and unsustainable competitive advantage of Islamic banks in Indonesia. The population in this study is Islamic banking units in Indonesia, the sampling technique used purposive sampling and the data is used from annual financial reports from 2015 to 2019. The results of this research support the resource-based theory that companies that can maintain their competitive advantage have added value and can also manage their strategic assets in the form of VRIN (Valuable, Rare, Inimitable, non-substitutable) more efficiently. The results also indicate that companies that can maintain competitive advantage are those that can provide added value for the stakeholders. The test results support the RBT hypothesis, as evidenced by the finding that it is possible to use VRIN assets to offer added value for stakeholders.

Разработана модель развития динамических способностей предприятия, ее использование позволяет выявлять потенциал промышленного предприятия с характеристикой по каждому виду инновационных ресурсов. Представлена формула реконфигурации динамических способностей предприятия на основе использования инновационных продуктов как VRIN-ресурсов. Для оценки уровня слабых рыночных сигналов сформирована нейросетевая модель. Апробация разработок проведена в условиях производства трансформаторной стали с использованием азотированного ферросилиция. Model for the development of dynamic capabilities of an enterprise has been developed, its use allows identifying the potential of an industrial enterprise with characteristics for each type of innovative resources. Formula for reconfiguring the dynamic capabilities of an enterprise based on the use of innovative products as VRIN resources is presented. Neural network model has been formed to assess the level of weak market signals. Abstract:

Extant research suggests the application of resource-based view (RBV) in exploring the issue of firm growth and innovation. Crucial elements of RBV assume that valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable (VRIN) resources are necessary for an organisation to gain competitive advantage, especially in an uncertain business environment. This study focuses on employees’ performance and the implementation of human resource management practices as important tools for survival in a challenging time. A content analysis is employed based on interviews data of managers of small and medium hotels in three popular islands in Malaysia. The analytical results are contradictory to the assumptions of VRIN resources. Island hotels are found to own a uniqueness in its characteristics that influence the hotels’ strategy to survive. Findings of this study call for future exploration of tourism industry sustainability planning, mainly to address the many challenges of uncertain business environments through effective resources management.

Random and inconsistent MMPI-2 profiles may be misconstrued as reflecting severe psychological impairment or feigning. To address this important issue, MMPI-2 protocols from 196 clinical outpatients were compared to 196 randomly generated protocols in a three-stage scale development procedure designed to detect inconsistent responding. A 16-item screening scale was derived on 200 protocols and cross-validated in two stages on the remaining protocols (102 and 90 protocols, respectively) with an overall accuracy of 94.4%. Performance of the new scale is discussed in relation to that of the traditional MMPI-2 measures of response consistency, particularly the VRIN and F. The new scale appears most useful as a screening measure given the ease of scoring; it reduces the need to score VRIN to a small fraction of cases. The relation between the new scale and F is strong in one of the current samples and awaits further comparisons to determine its relative effectiveness.

В рамках программ разработки продуктовых инноваций обосновано применение новых, нетрадиционных материалов для применения в производственном процессе, проведена апробация с использованием азотсодержащих лигатур на основе хрома. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to strengthen the innovative potential of modern Russian industrial enterprises based on the development and application of new, non-traditional materials as an important part of their resource base. It is proposed to use the methods of the VRIN-resources concept to improve technology, increase the flexibility and adaptability of industrial enterprises' management systems to increase consumer requirements for the quality of their products and ensure competitiveness. Within the framework of product innovation development programs, the use of new, unconventional materials for use in the production process was justified, testing was carried out using nitrogen-containing ligatures based on chromium.

The study is informed by inconsistencies and controversies that characterised previous research on SMEs performance that made the findings to be inconclusive. Similarly, there is dearth of studies and understanding of the moderating role of VRIN and the mediating role of ICT resources on the relationship between management competencies, entrepreneurial orientation and SMEs performance. Therefore, these have put limits to the researchers, academics, practitioners and other stakeholders in understanding the moderating and mediating role of VRIN and ICT resources on the relationship between management competencies and entrepreneurial orientation in achieving better SMEs performance. Consequently, this paper contributes to filling in the gaps identified in the literature by developing and proposing a conceptual framework for achieving better SMEs performance, and that could explain the relationships among the various SMEs resources and SMEs performance. Therefore, the study proposed twelve propositions. Consequently, the study contributed to knowledge by providing a framework that could be used to examine the relationship between the variables of this study empirically. It also provides a basis for further/ future studies. It is hoped it would lead the achieving better SMEs performance capable of providing employment, growth of GDP, enhancing exports and standard of living of the society. Therefore, SMEs performance is defined as the abilities of the SMEs to harness, integrate and utilize various internal and external resources with timely and right reconfiguration to achieve targeted set of objectives and performance capable of providing employment opportunities, growth of GDP, export and to uplift the standard of living of the society (Pulka, 2019). Management competencies are defined as â€œeffective performance of a task or activity in a job setting, due to the underlying characteristics of the individual: motives, traits, skills, self-image, social role, or knowledge and experienceâ€ (LeBrasseur, Blanco, & Dodge, 2002). Covin and Slevin (1991) defined entrepreneurial orientation as the process of development of specific behaviour that is targeted towards improving the SMEs propensity to take and absorb risks, to be creative, initiative, proactive and innovative toward achieving entrepreneurial success and a better SMEs performance. VRIN resources refer to the specific bundle of unique resources posses by the SMEs that are drivers of the SMEsâ€™ better performance (Barney, Wright, & Ketchen, 2001). Bhakoo and Choi (2013) see ICT as â€œthe technology-based infrastructure that acts as a conduit for facilitating transactions, sharing information with trading partners, coordinating activities and establishing governance structures between SMEs.
