Abstract:
Purpose – The resource-based view and value-rarity-imitability-organisation (VRIO) method have diffused widely into courses aimed at managerial practice, but research has yet to verify whether they help managers analyse a firm’s resources. Following recent interest in the use of strategy tools, the purpose of this paper is to focus on what happens when VRIO informs strategy action. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses experimental method to evaluate directly users’ analysis guided by VRIO relative to analysis that is not. Systematic coding of the responses evaluates how users select resources to evaluate, in which areas they make recommendations, and what account they take of competitors, dynamic evolution, and resource disadvantages, risks and limitations. Findings – VRIO encouraged users to evaluate resources relative to competitors and competitive dynamics, but resource selection difficulties and failure to evaluate resource disadvantages limited its value. In addition, it drew users to the existing operations and business model. Research limitations/implications – The study highlights a tendency for users to evaluate antecedents and outcomes of resources, and partly supports the view that VRIO elicits inward-looking descriptions. Field-based research is needed to show how using VRIO plays out in full strategy making context. Practical implications – Highlighted limitations in VRIO analysis could be alleviated by better specifying resource selection and by addressing the positive-only tenor of VRIO materials. Originality/value – Only a small number of published studies evaluate VRIO as a method of practical strategic analysis, and this paper is the first to look directly at users’ responses.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate if shared brands provide sustainable competitive advantage according to an adapted valuable, rare, imitability/replaceability and organization (VRIO) model to the Brazilian wine sector in the opinion of the government agencies, associations and managers of the wineries.Design/methodology/approachThis study was based on a qualitative and exploratory research, based on in-depth interviews. Fine wines that have geographical indications and are located in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul were analyzed and content analysis was used to explore data.FindingsIt was concluded that shared brands in the Brazilian wine sector can be considered a source of sustainable competitive advantage according to the resource-based view.Research limitations/implicationsQualitative research has the aspect of the subjectivity of the researcher when analyzing the data.Practical implicationsThe government agencies, associations and wineries can improve the production process and seek certified products for commercialization in the domestic and foreign markets. These contributions may also, in practice, be used by other sectors and countries.Originality/valueThis work contributes to the understanding of the shared brand’s concept, including geographical indications, collective brands and the sector brands. The proposition that shared brands provide sustainable competitive advantage, according to an adapted VRIO model was confirmed. Barney’s VRIO framework (Barney, 1991, 1995) hitherto thought for individual companies, has the letter “O” of Organization replaced by the letter “A” of Association, becoming VRIA. The authors found that the four conditions that form the here proposed acronym VRIA are valuable, rare, imperfectly imitable/replaceable and association.

Abstract:
The Chinese market is indispensable for international automobile enterprises and they are expanding their investment in this market accordingly. To escalate their market share in China, automobile manufacturers and independent automotive enterprises have implemented a series of management strategies. Consequently, competition in China is becoming increasingly intense. Conversely, Chinese automobile enterprises have no international brand recognition. In this paper, an independent automobile enterprise, Chery Automobile Co. Ltd., is selected as a case study and examined using the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) method. Moreover, we analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of the company’s internal environment using a fuzzy VRIO (Value, Rarity, Immutability and Organization) method. Applying the fuzzy theory to an analysis of the management environment can facilitate more effective strategy formulations. It is expected that the application of fuzzy theory to management methods will contribute to the future development of the Chinese automobile industry. The competitive advantages to Chery are illustrated by the fuzzy VRIO analysis.

Abstract:
This paper uses the Ohlson Model to analyze whether Net Income (NI), Other Comprehensive Income (OCI), and Comprehensive Income (CI) are value relevant for market value and the return of shares of publicy-traded Brazilian companies. To maximize the robustness of the results, we inserted the following control variables for each model: equity per Share (EqPS), Size (S), Industry (I), EBITDA per Share (EbPS), Revenue per Share (RePS), Liquidity (L), and Gross Domestic Product Growth (GDPG). The control variables S, RePS, and GDPG were significant for the three models related to the value of the company. The control variables EqPS, EbPS, RePS, and L, on the other hand, were only significant for the three models related to stock returns. Our main variables (NI, OCI, and CI) were found to be statistically significant in five of the six regression models after data analysis in a fixed effect panel using robust standard errors. However, only the variables NI and CI were considered to be relevant in the expected direction, meaning that they offered a positive contribution in explaining the value of the company.

Abstract:
This article aims to explore the factors influencing MSMEs – Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises production process improvement using variables of VRIO (Value Rarity, Inimitability, and Organization) resources and capabilities, foreign market knowledge, and internationalization. This research is conducted in 150 exporting-MSMEs samples in Central Java, Indonesia. The main analysis applied in this research is multiple regressions. The result shows that VRIO resources and capability, foreign market knowledge, and internationalization, significantly influenced production process improvement. It emphasizes that degree of internationalization only weakly influencing process improvement. The more important factors are internal factors like knowledge, resources, and capability. The result obtained can be used as the basis to develop the strategy of capability improvement for MSMEs in designing internationalization strategy. The strategy will closely relate to MSMEs’ process improvement to compete in international market. This research provides two contributions. First, the internationalization of handicraft MSMEs does not strongly define MSMEs production process improvement. Second, process improvement can be accelerated by gaining market knowledge and exploiting valuable, rare, inimitable, and organized resources and capabilities.

Abstract:
This study examines characteristics of successful online streaming businesses and proposes with the new gained insights a scalable business model solution for a podcast streaming service. As podcasts have just recently regained popularity after ten years of existence, there is an open opportunity to capitalize on the growing market of listeners. With the emergence of new formats and high-end studio productions such as ‘Serial’, the most accessed podcast to date, the podcast industry is becoming increasingly attractive to advertisers and new businesses. However, since the industry is still young and in development stage, there is a lack in knowledge and data that could help a podcast streaming firm to find a successful business model and win over the market. Aiming to fill the gap, this research project conducts a comparative case study analysis of leading video and audio streaming services to identify the characteristics of successful business models in the online streaming industry. By synthesizing the business model canvas as a documentation tool and the VRIO framework for benchmarking, this study integrates and combines theoretical models to provide empirical results for validation. In order to assess the finding’s applicability to the podcast industry, six semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts of the industry. As one of the key findings, this study extracted a total set of 21 success factors that can be attributed to the resources and competences of an online streaming firm. Seven of these factors are regarded as necessary for a firm to remain competitive in the industry, whereas 14 factors show potential to unlock competitive advantages. Thus, this report suggest that an online streaming service is likely to achieve sustaining success if the 21 identified success factors are incorporated in the business model. The outcome of the expert interviews demonstrates that the identified success factors are largely applicable to a podcast streaming service. The main differences lie in the success factor’s potential to generate competitive advantages. Due to the fact that the podcast industry is less evolved than the online streaming industry, it holds more untapped opportunities that can be leveraged by firms. For instance, offering ‘tailored and dynamic ad solutions’, unlocking ‘multiple revenue streams’ or pursuing an ‘integration with social media’ are some of the factors that are widely implemented by online streaming firms, yet unexploited in the podcast industry. Furthermore, particularities of the podcast medium lead to different rules of competition. Whereas ‘streaming licenses’ are the competitive basis for online streaming services, the open accessible format of podcasts significantly lowers the barriers of entry for aggregating businesses. The study therefore suggests that i. a. producing ‘original content’ and offering platform users a ‘personalized user experience’ can create a competitive edge to differentiate from rivals. On the basis of the aforementioned results, this study proposes a business model solution for a podcast streaming service that operates as a multi-sided platform with a freemium model. The main revenue streams are created by advertising sales and channel subscriptions. In summary, this study concludes that an implementation of 21 success factors could lead an online streaming service to a dominant market position. The identified success factors can largely be applied to a podcast streaming service, though particular variations need to be taken into account.

In this paper, I investigate the use of SWOT analysis and the resource based view as tools to elaborate a business plan and in academic research by assessing the two methods’ strengths and weaknesses.   I found that SWOT analysis is useful to structure and prioritise information in a short and concise way. Even though, the information and the information collection methods as well as the concepts and theories used in combinaton with the model and their quality is of the most importance for a proper use of the model.   The resource based view is useful to reflect over which internal resources are the most valuable for the company, even though it can be difficult to assess the most important assets, i.e. the intangible assets. I also found that the fact that the resource based view, which is a explanantory theory, is used as a predicative theory causes uncertainaty and is problematic.

Abstract With changes of social patterns, the quality and standard of human being's life are progressively improved in all aspects. However, while people enjoy the convenience that brought from the changes of new technologies, meanwhile, the world's energy resources are been overexploited and depleted gradually. In 1970s, environmental protection became one of the most important issues that studied and discussed by many academics and experts, and it allows consumer’s awareness of environment begin to rise. The advanced countries around the world, such as America, Europe and Japan have begun establishing environmental regulations and given supports to environment-related industries. Therefore, the importance of environmental protection has been affected to the world. Taiwan is an island country with a lack of many energy resources; people mostly need to rely on imports from other countries. Although, many developed countries are promoting the environmental protection industries and influenced our government to start involving such recycle business, yet the government only had focused on scrap metal recycling in early stages. After electro-optical and semiconductor technology industries are growing strong, it accompanied the large number of hazardous waste and caused serious incidents continually. It forces the government began to attach importance of solvent waste disposal and recycle industry development, also further formulated relevant laws and regulations. Even though, the recycle industry shows continuously growing but still considered as a small and niche industry. Most companies remain using old models of production equipment. This phenomenon restricts the recycling business scale in domestic market, let alone the recycling industry is classified as lower level of business and usually brings the negative impression to community. This research is based on developing trends of global environmental protection industry, current overall resource of recycling industry in Taiwan, and to analyze a local solvent recycling company as an object by using VRIO framework, interview structure, SWOT and Five Forces Analysis to conclude company’s strategy, technical value, employee organization, product uniqueness and product rarity in order to recognize the whole competitive strategies and industrial ecology of recycling industry through the observation of the part as the main purpose of study.

Abstract:
Strategic management is fundamental for organizational development. It plays a critical role in the accomplishment of business performance and, as result, in the achievement of competitive advantage. Currently, the increased use of strategic management has intentional impacts on a company’s performance and differentiation, specifically in a globalized market. From this perspective, organizational evaluation is important, as well as the development of strategic management frameworks that can guarantee the achievement of sustainable competitive advantages for organizations. One of the most well-known frameworks for organizational resource assessment is the Value, Rarity, Inimitability and Organizational-oriented (VRIO) framework. It is worth noting, however, that this tool is not without limitations (e.g., how to identify and weight resources and capabilities in the evaluation process), which have prevented progress. Hence, this dissertation aims to enhance the VRIO framework, allowing for its quantification in a transparent and robust manner. To reach this aim, the VRIO framework is combined with the DEcision-MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method, and a reallife application is carried out. The incentives and shortcomings of this structured evaluation model are also analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:
The field of strategic management has been popularized since the 1960s, as an aid for the search of success factors amongst the internal and external surroundings of an organization. Strategic management has observed and created strategies that are considered as pillars in the present way of applying contemporary management operations. Even though strategic management relies on managers’ capability to comprehend the current economic trends, this area has left a variety of questions unanswered, especially regarding the analyses of the combination of quantitative and qualitative decision criteria. This dissertation aims to enhance strategic management by developing a quantified valuable, rare, inimitable and organized (VRIO) framework, with the aid of the multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach. To accomplish this objective, the VRIO framework is combined with the Choquet integral (CI) and a real-life application is carried out to support strategic management. ABSTRACT Title : A Study on the Competitive Advantage of Power Supply Manufacturing Company─by utilizing TOWS Matrix Analysis and VRIO Structure Approach School : National Taipei University of Technology Page : 98 Department : Industrial Engineering & Management Time : June, 2004 Degree : Master Researcher : Tseng, Kuo- Hua Advisor : Tu, Chuang, Ph. D. Tien ,Fang Chih,Ph. D. Keyword : TOWS Matrix Analysis , VRIO (Value, Rarity,Imitability, Organization), SWOT, Balanced Scorecard . During the past two decades, competition of industries worldwide became global as the result of market openness, free trade and communication technologies improvement. Under such extremely competitive environment, an enterprise or a consortium needs an effective and systematic method to implement its business strategy to build and sustain its competitiveness, besides just having an outstanding management team. It is common in the past that a corporate draws its business strategy starting from financial point of view, goes through SWOT analysis, then reviews available resources to fix its strategy. However, from financial point of view as a major factor to decide business strategy very often is too focus on short term returns, and ignores long term development of the corporate. Whilst a strategy developed from competitiveness advantages, when being implemented, is very frequently limited by the lack of available resources and challenged by financial performance review during the period of execution. And, if the strategy formation started from corporate owned resources tends to lead the corporate development to an unbalanced situation. Hence, how to synergize internal resources to develop core competence, yet keeping a balanced development of a corporate has become a serious challenge of industries worldwide which deserves in-depth study. This research utilize TOWS Matrix Analysis and VRIO framework to perform SWOT analysis, combines Balanced Scorecard method to develop a systematic strategy formation, deployment, implementation and evaluation methodology. This methodology analyzes business and operational competitiveness advantages and shortcomings to effectively utilize available resources to develop and sustain corporate competitiveness in the industry. Besides developing the systematic managerial methodology, this research also performs case study of a switching power supply company. Result of this case study proves the feasibility and effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:
This dissertation focus is to contribute to a better understanding of RBV, with intentions of helping the companies within the study to achieve and maintain sustainable competitive advantage, and also help investigators, as a source reference for future investigations. For this purpose, a qualitative analysis was adopted which consisted in data obtained from representatives of the three brands represented in the study, as a means to better understand the respective companies, and answer the defined research questions: “What are the main resources and capabilities from the companies in the study? Do the resources and capabilities identified allow for competitive advantage to be obtained? What external factors influence the companies the most? Who are the main competitors?” There was also adapted a quantitative analysis, using surveys made to random consumers, for the purpose of cross checking the surveys’ information with the data obtained from the companies. In accordance with the previously established research objectives, the following conclusions were made: (1) The burger restaurants involved have most of the resources in common, while the consumers don’t agree with the resources established by the brands (2) Most of the resources of the companies that were observed by the study do not achieve sustainable competitive advantage (3) The external factor that burger restaurants consider as being the most influential is the country’s economy, although consumers don’t share the same opinion (4) In what competition is regarded, on one hand Burger King and McDonalds consider themselves direct competition, on the other hand H3 considers brands with different concepts as their main competitors. Consumers agree with this vision.

Abstract:
The purpose of VRIO analysis is to systematically identify resources and capabilities that may serve as a key source of competitive advantage. For a resource or capability to be the basis of a sustainable competitive advantage, it must be valuable (V), rare (R), and costly to imitate (I), and the firm must be organized (O) to capture the value from the resource or capability. This chapter discusses the underlying theory, core idea, depiction, process, insight or value created, and risks and limitations of VRIO analysis. Finally, the chapter continues the illustration of Harley-Davidson and applies the steps of VRIO analysis to this case.

Abstract:
Making smart regions smarter through smart specialization strategies (RIS3) is today on the political and economic agenda. In this context, it becomes a priority to know the regional stakeholders' perception of RIS3, based on the prioritization of the use of resources and capacities in their territories. The aim of this study is to perform a bibliometric analysis with the keywords smart specialization, regional innovation systems, and value, rareness, imitability, and organization (VRIO). The authors aim to contribute to the clarification of the literature on regional innovation ecosystems. They also intend to suggest a new model that allows the VRIO model to be adapted to the territories. Through extensive research using the Web of Science database, five clusters were identified (multiple helix; smart specialization and RIS3; innovation and entrepreneurship; regional policies and knowledge transfer and technology commercialization; regional growth, entrepreneurial, and innovative ecosystem), whose content analysis allowed to construct the conceptual regional helix assessment model.

Abstract:
In Latvia, de-institutionalization is gradually taking place, which is envisaged in the European Social Development Plan at the level of public policy. In Latvia, the non-governmental sector (NGO) sector is largely dependent on external funding. In addition, competition for external financing is increasing. One of the solutions to reduce the effect of external financing is to engage in economic activity. Social entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly popular in Latvia - a business model that allows economic activities to be carried out without losing the mission, goals and social impact of NGOs. Social entrepreneurship is a way of effectively addressing the concerns of different groups at risk of social exclusion, which can have a positive long-term impact on the development of both the city and society itself. Social entrepreneurship has the potential to solve various social problems, thus facilitating municipal work and reducing municipal budget expenditures. For municipalities, social enterprises are a tool for solving social problems, which allows them to solve social problems in the municipalities by using a trans-regional approach, without taking risks on investments, failure, changes in market demand. The aim of the study is to create scenarios for the development of NGO activities, using the example of Association “Oranzais stars” (Orange Ray). Main research methods used: monographic method, strategic analysis and planning methods - PEST, SWOT, VRIO matrix, scenario method. The main result of the methods applied in the thesis is the development of a suitable and sustainable business model as the society moves towards the implementation of social entrepreneurship.

Abstract:
Abstract: The paper deals with methods and ways of managing career risks in quality jobs. It has been more than 30 years since the management systems according to ISO standards have been intensively implemented, and in parallel, numerous occupations have been profiled in which individuals see the development of their professional careers. A special impetus and direction for the development of certain professions in quality was given by EOQ, which, researching the needs of organizations for such knowledge and professions, developed schemes for training professional staff in quality. After a certain period of development, it has become very important to start studying the risks that accompany the career development of professional staff in quality and to become aware of what can go wrong in such a commitment. Research and written sources on this topic are very modest, so the authors relied on sources of career development in other jobs, and used indicators of analysis of education and interviews conducted with participants in quality education conducted in the last 30 years by OSKAR Ltd. The authors are aware that ready-made recipes cannot be written on this issue, but methods and ways to avoid risk traps in planning one's own career in quality can be made aware. The authors are also aware of the fact that in countries in transition (to which this paper refers) there is a state of general insecurity, and very often uncertain economic conditions are reflected in the status and career of professional staff in quality. In addition to all this, it is time to start seriously considering and researching career risk management in quality jobs.
