Abstract:
The creation of 3D animation increasingly prioritizes the enhancement of character effects, narrative depth, and audience engagement to address the growing demands for visual stimulation, cultural enrichment, and interactive experiences. The advancement of virtual reality (VR) animation is anticipated to require sustained collaboration among researchers, animation experts, and hardware developers over an extended period to achieve full maturity. This article explores the use of Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) in generating 3D stereoscopic forms and environments, applying texture mapping, optimizing lighting effects, and establishing interactive user responses, thereby enriching the 3D animation experience. VRML’s functionality is further expanded through the integration of script programs in languages such as Java, JavaScript, and VRML Script via the Script node. The implementation of fuzzy model recognition within 3D animation simulations enhances the identification of textual, musical, and linguistic elements, resulting in improved frame rates. This study also analyzes the real-time correlation between the number of polygons and frame rates in a virtual museum animation scene. The findings demonstrate that the frame rate of the 3D animation within this virtual setting consistently exceeds 40 frames per second, thereby ensuring robust real-time performance, preserving the quality of 3D models, and optimizing rendering speed and visual effects without affecting the system’s responsiveness to additional functions.

This was a study of the use of virtual reality modelling language (VRML) for cross-platform interactive three-dimensional (3-D) visualization of high-resolution magnetic resonance (MR) images of the inner ear in the assessment of cochlear implant candidates.A retrospective case review was made of cochlear implant candidates undergoing pre-operative high-resolution MR studies to determine their suitability for implantation. 3-D visualizations of MR scans of the inner ear structures were created using surface rendering and exported as portable VRML files.Case studies are presented to illustrate different points of interest. VRML reconstructions aided the interpretation of two-dimensional (2-D) source images in a variety of inner ear abnormalities.VRML is an internationally recognized standard for cross-platform 3-D visualization that creates a means of providing the implanting surgeon with a portable 3-D representation of the inner ear, aiding interpretation of the complex cross-sectional anatomy of these structures, and guiding selection of patients for implantation as well as implantation technique. The elucidation of the mechanisms behind inner ear malformations can also be aided by detailed imaging studies of the temporal bone, with VRML reconstructions providing an easily interpreted representation of deformities.

A proposed system is described using a set of recommended requirements. Experiments that were conducted to explore the feasibility of some aspects of the proposed system are also described. The resulting experimental system was implemented on networked 100 MHz and 90 MHz Pentium-based computers enhanced with 3-D graphics accelerators. Geometry for the anatomy models were stored in Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) version 1.0 files, which could be accessed remotely over the Internet. Some models were later implemented as VRML 2.0 files, which enabled the storage of simple physiological behaviors with the geometry. The use of VRML, the de facto standard file format for 3-D modeling on the Web, in a medical collaboration system would help make such systems, which have been typically implemented on special-purpose hardware with proprietary anatomical and physiological models, much more accessible.

An electromyography (EMG) decoded based virtual artificial intelligence control system has been developed to quantify the performance of real-time control of a multifunctional myoelectric prosthesis. To develop this platform system, a three-dimensional upper limb was simulated by using Solidworks and then implemented into an integrated scene of virtual artificial limb ,which was programmed in virtual reality modeling language (VRML) and performed through Simulink toolbox of the MATLAB. By decoding surface electromyography (sEMG) signals collected from arm muscle surface, the platform system can identify thesix classes of different arm and hand movements and control the virtual artificial limb and/or the physical arms simultaneously. The VR-based platform also provides a relaxant and enjoyable training environment for prosthesis-users in clinic.

A product called Design Suite by In Part, Saratoga, CA, promises to reform design catalogs upright, creative, and efficient. Pro/ENGINEER models are fully parametric and include envelope dimensions and embedded parameters, such as mass properties and part number. InPart also includes Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) models that enable users to view the part in three dimensions before downloading it. InPart says that every model goes through a quality assurance check to ensure that it represents a repeatable, detailed, and accurate model. Then the manufacturer conducts a review. Finally, InPart conducts a second check. InPart also offers Alert Assurance, a notification system that sends e-mail to alert customers to changes in a part they have used and asks if they would like an updated part. Manufacturers are said to be contractually obligated to notify InPart, even before their own customers, of product changes, so InPart's customers are the first to know about a product change.

Abstract:
The part quality and cost are greatly affected by process parameters during rapid prototyping (RP). This paper proposes a Virtual Rapid Prototyping System (VRPS) and describes its functions, characteristics and realization method. Moreover, aimed at the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology, an Internet-based virtual rapid prototyping system named VRPS-I is implemented using Java and Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). The system resembles the physical fabrication system of SLS. With the aid of this system, not only can the visual rapid prototyping process be dynamically previewed, but the forming process and some part-quality-related parameters can also be predicted and evaluated. Therefore, the reasonable rapid prototyping parameters can be predetermined according to the simulated results without any physical RP machine. Hence, it can help optimize the prototyping process, improve part quality, enhance fabrication efficiency, and lower the model making cost significantly.

Abstract:
Nowadays many scientific 3D models of wood are available. These models are suitable only for simulation of physical fields movements in wood but not for educational purposes especially demonstration of microscopic structure of wood.3D structure of ring-porous hardwood species was created. European ash (Faraxinus excelsior L.) was selected due to its relatively simple wood structure than other wood species within ring-porous group. The model was created by manual modelling process in Rhinoceros 4.0 that is a software for visualization and modelling. Microslides were prepared from sample of ash to take micro photos that were used as a visual source for modelling. Beside these pictures made by authors of this paper other microphotos from wood anatomy publications were used. Created 3D model of ash is a VRML object (Virtual Reality Modelling Language). This format is available to viewing and presentation with severe freeware VRML browsers. These VRML browsers are available as a plug-in for standard internet browsers or as standalone VRML browsers. The model is useful for studying and teaching microscopic structure of ring‑porous hardwood species. It was created such a way to be as exact copy of original anatomical structure of ash wood as possible. The paper may be used as a cue for other authors to create their own 3D models of different wood kinds.

The Genetic Sculpture Park seeks to engage artists and observers in a creative dialogue and to empower novices in the creation of complex computer-graphic models. Each visitor to the park experiences a unique set of sculptural forms and takes part in a cooperative conversation with the computer to produce more aesthetically pleasing designs. Inspired by Darwin's theory of evolution, the project uses genetic algorithms to allow visitors to “breed” forms tailored to their individual sense of aesthetics. In this article, the authors recount investigations into evolutionary design methodologies (using shampoo bottles and three-dimensional head models) and describe their implementation in the Genetic Sculpture Park, an interactive Java/Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) world.

This paper presents ongoing research into user requirements for 3-dimensional "virtual worlds" to be used as a means of information retrieval. There is a brief review of the literature in the fields in which design of 3-dimensional virtual spaces has been carried out, and the conclusion is reached that this design has usually been done without regard to user preferences. This study has used grounded theory to establish user preferences, initially amongst a group of about fifty postgraduate information management students. Initial
results of open coding of these interviews are described, and the next steps in the study are laid out. The Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) will be used as a world design medium.

Abstract:
Finding one's way to sites of interest on the Web can be problematic, and this difficulty has been recently exacerbated by widespread development of 3-D Web content and virtual-world browser technology using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). Whereas travelers can often navigate 2-D Web sites based on textual and 2-D thumbnail image representations of the sites' content, finding one's way to destinations in 3-D environments is notoriously troublesome. Wayfinding literature provides clear support for the importance of landmarks in building a cognitive map and then using that map to navigate in a 3-D environment, be it real or virtual. Textual and 2-D image landmark representations, however, lack the depth and context needed for travelers to reliably recognize 3-D landmarks. This paper describes a novel 3-D thumbnail landmark affordance called a worldlet. Containing a 3-D fragment of a virtual world, worldlets offer travelers first-person, multi-viewpoint experience with faithful representations of potential destinations. To facilitate an investigation into the comparative advantages of landmark affordances for wayfinding, worldlet capture algorithms were designed, implemented, and incorporated into two VRML-based virtual environment browsers. Findings from a psychological experiment using one of these browsers revealed that, compared to textual and image guidebook usage, worldlet guidebook usage: nearly doubled the time subjects spent studying the landmarks in the guidebook, significantly reduced the time required for subjects to reach landmarks, and reduced backtracking to almost zero. These results support the hypothesis that worldlets facilitate traveler landmark knowledge, expedite wayfinding in large virtual environments, and enable skilled wayfinding.

Abstract:
The VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) file format is a popular file format for describing a graphical scene: object shapes, appearance properties, animation, and interactions. However, the format does not provide any mechanism for describing the order of objects' appearances or their changes over time. Instead, an interface to Java is offered for controlling the temporal relationships between objects in the scene. The use of Java makes it difficult for a person with his programming skill to author a dynamic virtual environment. In this paper we attach a span and an age to each object and their hierarchical and temporal relations are expressed in a new data structure, called a span graph (SpanGraph). An object in the span graph, when alive, grows its age and performs associated actions according to its age during the extent of the time span. Furthermore, the object may have child objects whose spans are sub-extents of the parent span. In this paper, we demonstrate uses of the SpanGraph in virtual studio and virtual engineering design applications.

Abstract:
In order to keep track of the position and motion of our body in space, nature has given us a fascinating and very ingenious organ, the inner ear. Each inner ear includes five biological sensors—three angular and two linear accelerometers—which provide the body with the ability to sense angular and linear motion of the head with respect to inertial space. The aim of this paper is to present a dynamic virtual reality model of these sensors. This model, implemented in MATLAB/Simulink, simulates the rotary chair testing which is one of the tests carried out during a diagnosis of the vestibular system. High-quality 3D animations linked to the Simulink model are created using the export of CAD models into Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) files. This virtual environment shows not only the test but also the state of each sensor (excited or inhibited) in real time. Virtual reality is used as a tool of integrated learning of the dynamic behavior of the inner ear using ergonomic paradigm of user interactivity (zoom, rotation, mouse interaction, etc.). It can be used as a learning and demonstrating tool either in the medicine field—to understand the behavior of the sensors during any kind of motion—or in the aeronautical field to relate the inner ear functioning to some sensory illusions.

Abstract:
In landscape planning, visualization of landscape is a powerful tool for public understanding and for selection of alternative plans. In recent years, three dimensional (3D) computer graphics (CG) were used as visualization tools of environment because it has the ability to accurately simulate the changes caused by a proposed plan. In particular, virtual reality (VR), which enables to walk through in a modeled park or in a visualized forest, was considered as the advanced technique of landscape visualization. In this study, we developed a landscape visualization system with graphic user interface, which we named VR-Terrain (GUI version), to generate the virtual reality image easily by using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) and plant modeling techniques. In order to test the feasibility of the landscape visualization system, we applied the system to Ichinoe Urban Design Plan. Ichinoe is located at Edogawa Ward, Tokyo. There is a Sakaikawa Shinsui Park with water space surrounded by large amount of green. In the case study, we simulated the landscape of Sakaikawa Shinsui Park with about 200 plants and 300 buildings. We used the images simulated by VR-Terrain to explain the concept (such as building height limit) to the residents in the public meetings. It took about 30 hours to make the 3D model of the town. After ten minutes of training, anybody can walk through in the simulated town freely. The results showed that the VR image by the system helped the public understanding of the concept of the urban plan.

The paper proposes a new method to implement 3D simulation for silk fabrics with complicated structure (such as Re-weft texture) based on geometrical model and texture mapping. At First, fitting polynomial curve is used to simulate bending form of the yarn, three-dimensional model of the yarn is generated through the matrix calculation, and computer model of re-weft jacquard silk fabric is put forward by stratification of weft yarn in fabric. Three-dimensional geometric model of re-weft jacquard silk fabric is built based on fabric structure of the Peirce mode and virtual reality modeling language (VRML), light intensity function and illumination model of re-weft fabric are established with Open GL tools hereafter. Also, yarn (in particular deformating filament, colored yarn) images extracted out of actual yarn photographs (in the yarn library), which is scanned by scanners, is applied to yarn models through texture mapping to improve the sense of reality for re-weft jacquard silk fabric.

To find the kinematic model in applications different from robotics, the free-body diagram and coordinateconversion using Euler angles is frequently used. In robotics the Khalil-Kleinfinger (1986) method is used(and others), which allows coordinate conversions over several joints. In this paper a new application ofthis method to solve the fire control problem of a naval anti aircraft gun is proposed. To demonstrate theapplication a virtual model is built using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) and controlledby Matlab Simulink®. From the direct geometric model the solution of the problem is found, includingthe detection system, platform, gun and flight of the missile. This model serves as a tool for the design, testing and integration of controllers for the gun and detection system. The prediction algorithms ofthe trajectory of the target and the missile in flight models can also be integrated. The results show thatthe geometric model of complex systems with many degrees of freedom can be constructed in a precise, methodical and easy to understand manner.

Abstract:
In this paper, we propose a 3D object recognition approach, based on the shape distribution D2 and artificial neural networks. The challenge is to discriminate between similar and dissimilar shapes by finding a shape signature that can be constructed and classified quickly. We propose a connectionist system to recognize 3D objects in VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) format. The key idea is to represent the signature of an object as a shape distribution sampled from a shape function measuring global geometric properties of an object. The proposed strategy is the following: from a polygon object to be recognized, a triangulation is performed. Then, distances are calculated between two random points of the triangulated surface of the 3D object. The frequency of these distances will be represented by a normalized histogram. The values of these histograms feed a multi-layer neural network with back- propagation training. We demonstrate the potential of this approach in a set of experiments, which proved our system could achieve above 91.7% recognition rate. In addition, to evaluate the efficiency of our method, we compare our classifier with Support vector machine and k- nearest neighbours. The simulation results highlight the performance of the proposed approach.

Abstract:
Corrosion of reinforcement is one of the major causes of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. Various crack patterns are nucleated around reinforcement in concrete due to expansion of corrosion products. Crack kinematics of locations, types, and orientations are quantitatively determined by the acoustic emission (AE) – simplified Green’s functions for moment tensor analysis (SiGMA) procedure in association with laboratory tests conducted on concrete specimens simulating corrosion-induced damage. These kinematic outcomes are obtained as three-dimensional (3-D) locations and vectors, and are thus visualized in 3-D by using virtual reality modeling language (VRML). Numerical analysis is conducted by the boundary element method (BEM) based on the concept of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) to clarify the mechanisms of corrosion-induced crack extension. Relationships between dimensionless stress intensity factors and cracking types are studied by BEM. Contributions of mode I and mode II failures are dependent on the cracking types. It is found that the process of crack propagation due to corrosion of reinforcement in concrete is mostly a mode I fracture with mixed-mode and, in a few cases, mode II fracture.Key words: acoustic emission, moment tensor, corrosion cracking, stress intensity factor.

Abstract:
More effective production planning and scheduling in shipbuilding is needed to prepare the master data related to the products, the progress of work, and the production method. Therefore, it is most important to generate automatically the master data from a computer-aided design (CAD) model. However, production engineers manually read and analyze the assembly drawings with the detailed process of production, create, and input the master data. It is a time consuming job and also the data are neither clear nor accurate. In this study, we have developed a production information system using Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP), which generates detailed production-oriented master data systematically and automatically from the CAD hull models considering work process. This production information includes many properties, such as assembly trees, working location, the working posture of setting and welding, material, detailed welding property, direction of stiffeners, plates and assemblies, specifications of parts and assemblies, curvature, turn-over, bevel of seams, slit and open, and throat thickness of welds. Secondly, three-dimensional geometric data (Virtual Reality Modeling Language, VRML) from subassemblies to grand assembly can be generated automatically according to the production process and method. We've tried to improve the quality of the production planning and scheduling with highly accurate detailed master data.
