Full textThis research on word and image - more specifically on the focusing phenomena at stake in language and painting - mainly has an impact in the field of semiotics. The systematic cross-examination of both linguistic and pictorial signs leads to an in-depth reflection on the vaster notions of time and space. The two entities are distinct only in the artificial theoretical fields of science, due to epistemological constraints which alternatively make us blind to movement or space. Concretely, we never experience time without space or space without time, there is only movement and it is four-dimensional. Poetry taken in its widest acceptation - i. E. A one-dimensional linguistic representation - is the kinetic ex-pression of an internal invisible flow of consciousness. Conversely, painting is the two-dimensional fixation and external reordering of the self. Focusing phenomena occur at all representational levels but also when moving from the more concrete to the more abstract: the linguistic line. In a way, representations act as inter-subjectivity’s measuring tools. They act as landmarks towards which interlocutors’ shifting environment is targeted and from which it derives. Each time the subject compensates for the missing dimension(s) in the representation, whether linguistic or pictorial. I therefore define focusing phenomena as the momentous but ephemeral halts in an ever-shifting flow towards the more abstract and back. Fixing those miscellaneous ideas and impressions requires such illusory breaks, while meaning on the whole never occurs in one specific identifiable spot; it is an u-topos, the only genuine abstraction. Representations thus always deictically point to an intrinsic lacuna: what they signify is neither visual nor linguistic; literally, the focus is a hole in the fabric left for the interpreter to fill

Full textVisual recognition of vehicles through multiple observations is an important task in automatic trafic management. We address the problem of vehicle matching on aerial images sequences with large view point and viewing condition differences. This task is a difficult problem for two principal reasons. On one hand our objects of interest are composed with large uniform patterns, subject to illumination problems, which results in bad discrimination power. On the other hand large pose variations may occur in vehicle comparison. The challenges of change in pose, aspect and appearances across two disparate observations are handled by using a precise a priori modelling of object geometry. Two recognitions strategies are proposed. The first one consists in adaptative threshold parametrized by viewing conditions. The second ones learns disriminants elements which characterize “same” and “different” couple of vehicles, to build a similarity measure. Evaluations and comparisons with state-of-art are proposed to validate our algorithms

Full textThe central topic of this work is to study through which ways Spinoza’s philosophy solves or, at least, negotiates oppositions between absolutely or relatively heterogeneous figures (themes, notions or examples) it yields. Starting with an analysis of theoretical material provided by Spinoza himself, the first part exhibits the reasons why, in spite of originating from "imagination", the language can express true thoughts or true ideas. The second part, pondering on the lemmas of ethics II, deals with questions of physics and, more precisely, with the problem of the individuality of any given thing; it shows that there is probably a discrepancy between the consistency of an individual thing in itself or for god and its consistency for us. The third part establishes some connections between the idea that, if its outdoor surrounding is suppressed, any being will get an everlasting duration of existence and the idea that, according to ethics III, proposition IV, corollary II, a complete dissimilarity between the nature of a worshipper and the nature of the object of his adoration is the very condition of pure or even sacred love

Full textGraph databases appear naturally in various scenarios, such as social networks and the semantic Web. In these cases, the information contained in the database lies as much in the data itself as in the topology of the graph, that is, in how the data points are linked together. This leads to considering traditional database theory questions for query languages that return data nodes based on the paths of the graph connecting them. We focus our attention on the view-based query determinacy and rewriting problems. They ask the question whether a view of the database contains enough information to fully answer a query without accessing the database directly. If so, we then want to express the answer to the query directly with regards to the view. This setting occurs in many applications, such as data integration and query optimization. We start by comparing these two tasks to other common task in this setting: computing certain answers, checking consistency of a view instance and updating it. We then build on these results in two specific cases. First, we show that for regular path queries, the existence of a monotone rewriting coincides with the existence of a rewriting expressible in Datalog. Then, we show that for views that only consider the lengths of the path in the graph, we can decide a weaker form of determinacy, called asymptotic determinacy, and produce first-order rewritings for the queries that are asymptotically determined

Full textThe work of this thesis was initiated by a Radiomic learning problem. Radiomics is a medical discipline that aims at the large-scale analysis of data from traditional medical imaging to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The main hypothesis of this discipline is that by extracting a large amount of information from the images, we can characterize the specificities of this pathology in a much better way than the human eye. To achieve this, Radiomics data are generally based on several types of images and/or several types of features (from images, clinical, genomic). This thesis approaches this problem from the perspective of Machine Learning (ML) and aims to propose a generic solution, adapted to any similar learning problem. To do this, we identify two types of ML problems behind Radiomics: (i) learning from high dimension, low sample size (HDLSS) and (ii) multiview learning. The solutions proposed in this manuscript exploit dissimilarity representations obtained using the Random Forest method. The use of dissimilarity representations makes it possible to overcome the well-known difficulties of learning high dimensional data, and to facilitate the joint analysis of the multiple descriptions, i.e. the views. The contributions of this thesis focus on the use of the dissimilarity easurement embedded in the Random Forest method for HDLSS multi-view learning. In particular, we present three main results: (i) the demonstration and analysis of the effectiveness of this measure for HDLSS multi-view learning; (ii) a new method for measuring dissimilarities from Random Forests, better adapted to this type of learning problem; and (iii) a new way to exploit the heterogeneity of views, using a dynamic combination mechanism. These results have been obtained on radiomic data but also on classical multi-view learning problems

Full textRecording measurements about various phenomena and exchanging information about it, participate in the emergence of a type of data called time series. Today humongous quantities of those data are often collected. A time series is characterized by numerous points and interactions can be observed between those points. A time series is multivariate when multiple measures are recorded at each timestamp, meaning a point is, in fact, a vector of values. Even if univariate time series, one value at each timestamp, are well-studied and defined, it’s not the case of multivariate one, for which the analysis is still challenging. Indeed, it is not possible to apply directly techniques of classification developed on univariate data to the case of multivariate one. In fact, for this latter, we have to take into consideration the interactions not only between points but also between dimensions. Moreover, in industrial cases, as in Michelin company, the data are big and also of different length in terms of points size composing the series. And this brings a new complexity to deal with during the analysis. None of the current techniques of classifying multivariate time series satisfies the following criteria, which are a low complexity of computation, dealing with variation in the number of points and good classification results. In our approach, we explored a new tool, which has not been applied before for MTS classification, which is called M-histogram. A M-histogram is a visualization tool using M axis to project the density function underlying the data. We have employed it here to produce a new representation of the data, that allows us to bring out the interactions between dimensions. Searching for links between dimensions correspond particularly to a part of learning techniques called multi-view learning. A view is an extraction of dimensions of a dataset, which are of same nature or type. Then the goal is to display the links between the dimensions inside each view in order to classify all the data, using an ensemble classifier. So we propose a multi-view ensemble model to classify multivariate time series. The model creates multiple M-histograms from differents groups of dimensions. Then each view allows us to get a prediction which we can aggregate to get a final prediction. In this thesis, we show that the proposed model allows a fast classification of multivariate time series of different sizes. In particular, we applied it on aMichelin use case

Full textAugmented Reality (AR) consists in inserting virtual elements in a real scene, observed through a screen or a projection system on the scene or the object of interest. The augmented reality systems can take different forms to obtain a balance between three criteria: precision, latency and robustness. It is possible to identify three main components to these systems: localization, reconstruction and display. The contributions of this thesis focus essentially on the display and more particularly the rendering of augmented reality applications. Contrary to the recent advances in the field of localization and reconstruction, the insertion of virtual elements in a plausible and aesthetic way remains a complicated problematic, ill-posed and not adapted to a real-time context. Indeed, this insertion requires a good understanding of the lighting conditions of the scene. The lighting conditions of the scene can be divided in several categories. First, we can model the environment to describe the interaction between the incident and reflected light pour each 3D point of a surface. Secondly, it is also possible to explicitly the environment by computing the position of the light sources, their type (desktop lamps, fluorescent lamp, light bulb, . . . ), their intensities and their colors. Finally, to insert a virtual object in a coherent and realistic way, it is essential to have the knowledge of the surface’s geometry, its chemical composition (material) and its color. For all of these aspects, the reconstruction of the illumination is difficult because it is really complex to isolate the illumination without prior knowledge of the geometry, material of the scene and the camera pose observing the scene. In general, on a surface, a light source leaves several traces such as shadows, created from the occultation of light rays by an object, and the specularities (or specular reflections) which are created by the partial or total reflection of the light. These specularities are often described as very high intensity elements in the image. Although these specularities are often considered as outliers for applications such as camera localization, reconstruction or segmentation, these elements give crucial information on the position and color of the light source but also on the surface’s geometry and the material’s reflectance where these specularities appear. To address the light modeling problem, we focused, in this thesis, on the study of specularities and on every information that they can provide for the understanding of the scene. More specifically, we know that a specularity is defined as the reflection of the light source on a shiny surface. From this statement, we have explored the possibility to consider the specularity as the image created from the projection of a 3D object in space. We started from the simple but little studied in the literature observation that specularities present an elliptic shape when they appear on a planar surface. From this hypothesis, can we consider the existence of a 3D object fixed in space such as its perspective projection in the image fit the shape of the specularity ? We know that an ellipsoid projected perspectivally gives an ellipse. Considering the specularity as a geometric phenomenon presents various advantages. First, the reconstruction of a 3D object and more specifically of an ellipsoid, has been the subject to many publications in the state of the art. Secondly, this modeling allows a great flexibility on the tracking of the state of the specularity and more specifically the light source. Indeed, if the light is turning off, it is easy to visualize in the image if the specularity disappears if we know the contour (and reciprocally of the light is turning on again). (...)

Recovering system architectural représentations is particularly nteresting when sucé représentations are not available. The work presented in this thesis joins the effort on software architecture reconstruction. This thesis proposes approach BeeEye as a generic engineering approach to enable the construction of architectural views from an existing object-oriented system. BeeEye uses viewpoints and lets users define new ones. BeeEye provides différent construction prouesses; gives the possibility to define user-specific construction processus. The viewpoints are used to model the expectations and wishes (or priory knowledge) of users about the software system in question. Two categories of architectural views construction are proposed: construction by mapping and construction by explo`ration. The proposed approach is generic enough to be used with all objects software svstems for which we have the source code

Full textThe presence of foreign acquirers in the capital of listed companies raises many questions for academic research. The studies that have been conducted to date rarely generate conclusive findings about the impact of foreign investors on the performance of listed targets. This is why we sought to get a better understanding of the role of the nationality of acquirers in the light of theories of corporate governance. Based on a synthetic approach to corporate governance, we have sought to understand, on the one hand, changes brought by the foreign acquirer in the corporate governance system of the target firm under the disciplinary view : change in size, independence, CEO duality, presence and chair of the board of directors; on the other hand, we examined, under the cognitive approach, the cultural differences as an amplifier of cognitive costs. Our study focuses on acquisitions in the United States over the period 1994-2008, carried out by foreign or domestic acquirers. The foreign acquirers considered in our study are the French, German and Japanese acquirers. Our results show that the level of involvement of foreign acquirers in the corporate governance of the target, results in various changes in the corporate governance of the target firms. Our results suggest also, for the cognitive dimension of corporate governance, that the cultural distance between the two partners and the departure of top management, influence the performance of the target firms. We found also that the domestic acquirers (U.S acquirers) improve performance of the target firms after acquisition more than foreign acquirers considered in our study. In terms of nationalities, we show that the acquirers of Japanese nationality influence negatively the performance of their targets. The French acquirers are the ones who brought the most important changes into the disciplinary governance ; at the cognitive governance level, they implement an important transfer of knowledge to their targets firms

Full textIn this dissertation, I will try to show you the interest of a phylomemetic approach of myths in the perspective of a reconstruction of the settlement of Africa, and of the globe over longterm. After an historical presentation of this methodological approach, I will argue that the myths form a distinct and largely independent class of cultural replicators whose behaviour and fidelity can rival those of genes and languages, and show that it is possible to apply computer tools used in biology to families of myths or oral traditions in an attempt to answer questions about the history of people and their migrations, or to contribute to the interpretation of archaeological remains.I will discuss common objections to the application of the phylogenetic model of myths, and highlight the extreme slowness of evolution for some of them. I will then establish a correlation between myths and gene diffusion, thanks to the construction of phylogenetic trees, a model of diffusion of peoples inside Africa and throughout the world. The first form of several oral narratives or traditions, sometimes existing prior to the Out-of-Africa process, can thus be found at the same time as a clarification on the meaning of certain archaeological remains including rock art can be brought. Results appear solid, in particular because they resist changes in the corpus and method and remain consistent with those from other approaches

Full textFrance's Ambassador to Japan from 1921 to 1927, Paul Claudel discovered there the Noh theatre which stems from a medieval performing tradition. The Catholic dramatist and symbolist poet found in the Noh what he had imagined as a new form of “synthesis of arts’’, which was for him a perfect union of Poetry, Music and Dance, open to spirituality. Our method is genetic, historic and comparative in studying his understanding of the Noh, which is a source of inspiration for him. We have adopted a double perspective: first of all we study the history of the reception of the Noh in the Western world from the 16th century onward, and combine this type of investigation with literary considerations about the dramatist's aesthetics. The originality of our poet’s vision appears in comparison with the authentic Japanese conception of the Noh plays and the interpretation of his Western predecessors. For unlike these European specialists, his silence about the Kyôgen, a comic sketch played in a Noh performance, is surprising; his attitude to Buddhism is ambiguous; his essay about the Noh has a specific literary quality. The adage of Zeami, founder of the Noh, quoted in the Claudel's Journal, throws light on the process of assimilation by his Catholic vision of oriental philosophy. Finally, we show the impact of the Noh on his plays written in Japan, like La Femme et son ombre (1922), and on his “dramatic oratorio,” a genre inaugurated in 1927. The Noh is sublimated in his Christian world. Claudel, a cosmopolitan author who aims at universality, after having penetrated the world of the Noh, integrates it in his creative practice, according to his own aesthetic and spiritual conviction

Full textThis doctoral thesis aims at describing the phenomenon of brevity in short television programmes about plastic arts. First, we will construct the problem constituted by the presence of such programmes on television and by the threat their insertion in the television flood represents for the existence of the brief discourse. Then, a notional analysis of brevity, clearly distinguished from shortness, will enable us to pick out several strategies of brevity in the media. In a rhetorical perspective, these programmes aim at getting adapted to the constraint of brevity, whereas in a pragmatic perspective, their target is to make the relation to the work of art easier. First, through the description of the process used in two programmes, D’Art d’art on France 2 and Suivez l’artiste on France 3, we will study the multiple strategies the programme resorts to in order to try to fight against the television flood, suggesting restraint in speech! or operating retention via various techniques of condensation. Then, we will concentrate on the changes brought by brevity in its efficiency to the relation to the work of art. It can be actualized, reduced to distant contact or to its effects. Finally, its possibility is increased since it is formed in an occasional and contingent encounter. In this form of short television communication, creative of possibilities, the brevity of discourse redefines the terms, moves the stakes in the relation of communication and introduces flexibility, giving the possibility to the work of art to open to multiform contact

Full textTags systems for Knowledge Organization System centralize and provide the tags that can be employed in classifying, sharing and seeking knowledge on the web for personal or organizational use. However, an increased variety of vocabularies and languages cause connections between tags and documents marked by textual tags to become less and less distinctive, making the use and reuse of tags systems even harder. Although previous attempts have been made onto visual tags system by using icons, it caused the disorientation when users facing with plant of isolated symbols. Our research dedicates to searching a new approach to improve the representation of tags and their structure in a tags system, where well-structured icons enhance the tagging effectiveness by considering tagging quality and tagging speed. The LVD (Visual Distinctive Language)-based iconic tags system is proposed and presented in this thesis to bring amelioration mainly from semiotic interpretation of tag meaning and graphical code of tag structure. The arrangement of icons is as well another interesting topic that was deal with in our research to offers a more complete definition of iconic tags system. Apart from modeling and evaluating the LVD-based iconic tags system we have considered the way to build up such icon system in today’s cooperative knowledge sharing context and made it possible to manage and share iconic tags on a collaborative plate-form

Full textHighway of the Sun means for many french or foreigner travelers the imagination of holiday's departure or return to northern latitude. But she means although an original experiment, as the sensation of approaching the South could be considered as a most important expectation. In opposite direction, the impression to leave the South behind tends to become an obvious fact. Travelers, maps and travel stories often describe Saône-Rhône corridor as countries of transition between the north and the south. Highway of the sun is at the time commonplace (the journey is familiar and repeated since many years for some travelers) and unusual (different from daily routes). Consequently the experiment of this highway is paradoxical: still considered at many times as opposite to beauty spots, highway of the Sun remains for many families the own way to notice the gathering between the north and the South. After the widespread opinion of dullness, travelers themselves easily describe landscapes and signs of a new atmosphere. All these facts show how the highway generates geographical representations. The approach of landscapes and territories tends to vary, according to culture, real-life experience and origin. From which place the automobilist perceives he enter the south on this highway? Conversely, where does he considerer he leaved the South? The lines of transition noticed by travelers will be explained by entering the highway?s landscape, which is compared to a play (B.Boutefeu, 2007) with sets, frontal scenes where signs of transition must come to terms with other actions

Full textThe practice of the so-called "disabled" artists is most often analyzed by the field of sociology through the social and environmental implications that are being played or the effects of creation on the artists concerned. Through this research, we wanted to promote an aesthetic approach, in connection with the performing arts, especially on contemporary theater and dance stages. We thus supported our study of the review of artistic works and experiences in this field of practitioners deemed "non-standard" in relation to the cultural contexts and social uses in which they are involved. These analyzes have enabled us to realize that the study of disability refers to pluralistic domains that generate discourse, especially around the notions of "difference (s)" and "non-standard". The emphasis on the work of the practitioners made it possible, on the one hand, to approach the aesthetic dimension of their work and, on the other hand, gave rise to the discovery of new dimensions of what relates to difference. The first objective is to determine the context in which artists considered "non-standard" evolve in order to focus on the aesthetic contribution of the peculiarities that define them on the different scenes studied

Full textOur essay analyses the limitations of the formalized and axiomatic interpretations of the theories of the ancient logic, spcially the aristotle's system. On one hand, in relation with the philosophical purposes which found epistemologically the theorical requirements and the semantical nature of the systems of the ancient logic. For, these systems coming within their author's pjilosophical conceptions, their formalization and axiomatization produce a kind of methodical abstraction inside the philosophical doctrines which express their reach. On the other hand, according to the relativity of the foremost notions and axioms which are freely choosen as the indefinable concepts and undemonstrable theorems in the formalized and axiomatic presentation of the aristotle's system. Thus, we settle that, the aristotle's syllogistic could not be interpreted as a formal axiomatic system which brings to the notion of thelogical law. So, like the stoic logic, it should be considered as a inferential system built on the formal inference rules which warrant the security of reasoning. Thereby, their modern readings as the systems of logical laws or thesis, would only have a reducing value which rectify and roughly adapt them to the methods of new logic

Full textThe psycho-analytic theory of aesthetics which is dovious in freud's work is less evident in lacan's. So it needs investigation to puit to evidence. This investigation takes the freudian : idea of lack as a basis, this lack being here pregenital libido inhibited by repression and tumed into artistic enjoyment. Four theoretical devioes must be distinguished in lacan7s work. The first one is intersubjectivity. It has not consequences on the field of aesthetics : as this device can overcome the division constituted by gap between imaginary and symbolics in which it is located, the lacanian subject is not, by structure, dooned to artistic sublimation. The second device puts the point on the other's defect where the subject takes place as a signifying "lack of being". The other's aesthetics takes place here as poetics. This poetics has nothing to do with the poet's mind neither with its incarnation because the other's structure is enough to build it. The third device is enjoyment the loss of which makes the subject as a reel lack of being. It drives to aesthetics of enjoyment which takes as a basis, the "out-signified" built by instinctive sublimation. Last, the research shows how the other's poetics and the aesthetics of enjoyment are combined in the double gap in self-identity by witch the subject is charaterized

Full textThe violence depicted on the vases is shown either by expressive models or by discreet and significant details. Different works representing one or more types of violence are many in the archaic and classical periods of Greek art. A choice was necessary and our research follows four lines: illustrations of monsters, the François Vase, depictions of the Ilioupersis and the cups illustrating the presentation of Achille's armour. The Greek artists constructed the image of violence. Some used very subtle constructions, That we have attempted to interpret, in order to reveal this essence of violence. These chosen constructions are sufficient to demonstrate the "artistic problem" they raise and attempt to solve. The representations studied here show a progression. Firstly, the archaic models of monsters convey the idea of masquerade. Then we detected a demonology connected with man's destiny leading to a "transubstantiation". But man's victory, apparently easily attained, remains much more difficult and complex. This is shown in the skill of the artists. If victory depends on the valour of the Greeks, it also often requires the help of the gods. They are frequently represented beside the warriors. But at times this divine presence has difficulty in prevailing. Depictions of women warriors emphasize a reading which questions this perpetual victory. Behind the warriors in combat can be discerned the combat of Athena and the Erinyes and possibly also that of the oi͏̈kos against the polis. Finally in the document we have studied, we have shown, beyond the order and harmony of the compositions, disorder and even chaos. In fact, in a quite contemporary manner, these representations introduce chaos into order
