Full textThe mechanical properties of thermoplastic vulcanizates, TPVs, depend strongly on their morphologies, which themselves depend on the properties of the primary polymers, the composition of the TPV and the crosslink system and crosslink process. The morphology is defined during the dynamic vulcanization. This work deals with the study of the influence of crosslink systems on TPVs based on PA(6/66)/NBR (co-polyamide PA6/66 and nitrile rubber) in different compositions (40/60, 35/65, 30/70 in mass). Dicumyl peroxide, bismaleimide, phenolic resin, a sulfur-accelerated system and dicumyl peroxide with two co-agents were used as crosslinkers. TPVs were characterized by taking into account their mechanical strength, solvent resistance, compression set, morphology and thermal properties. All the TPVs exhibit better properties than the blend. The curing system constituted by dicumyl peroxide and bismaleimide/sulfur (DCP/BMI/sulfur) as co-agents resulted in a more defined morphology, and therefore the TPV exhibited the best properties. The addition of inorganic fillers as carbon black, N 330, or clay (montmorillonite), has not brought benefits to the system based on TPVs DCP/ BMI/ sulfur. The TPVs with fillers showed lower mechanical properties than the TPVs without fillers. The compression set was also the same, while a co-continous morphology could be observed in MEV analyses.

The aim of this study was to incorporate styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) industrial scraps into a base formulation of identical composition used in the fabrication process of extruded profiles. Technical and environmental performance of the developed composites was evaluated. The scraps were collected and ground under ambient conditions. The powder obtained, SBR-r, was physically, thermally and chemically characterized. Nine composites with different proportions, varying from 10 to 90 phr (parts for hundred of rubber) of SBR-r were prepared and the results were compared with the control sample (base formulation with 0 phr of SBR-r). Thermal, rheometric, physical, mechanical, dynamic-mechanical and chemical properties of the SBR-r composites were evaluated before and after accelerated ageing. The environmental performance of the recycling process was determined by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The results indicated that the powder obtained was suitable for incorporation in new formulations. The thermal analysis of the compounds suggested that an interfacial particle-matrix interaction occurred. Rheometric properties were not significantly affected with the addition of SBR-r. The mechanical properties, such as tensile and tear strength, showed that up to 50 phr of SBR-r can be added without adversely affecting these properties. Dynamic-mechanical properties and the micrographs corroborated the mechanical results, indicating the homogeneity and a good adhesion between the scraps and the elastomeric matrix. The ageing effect led to a decrease in the mechanical properties, as a result of the increase in the stiffness of the material, related to the increase in the crosslink density. LCA results indicated a reduction in the life cycle impacts of the fabrication process with the recycling of scrap rubber, mainly due to the decrease in the consumption of raw materials from non-renewable resources.

Full textA presente dissertação apresenta os resultados obtidos através de um projeto de melhoria do desempenho da produção no processo de Vulcanização na empresa Continental Mabor S.A. As empresas que queiram ser líderes de mercado, no sector automóvel, têm que ter, nas suas principais políticas e prioridades, a integração de novos produtos. Este fator obriga a que a empresa se reorganize e aplique metodologias de forma a avaliar e melhorar o seu desempenho. Os objetivos da aplicação destas metodologias passam por melhorar as condições de trabalho, aumentar a produtividade e melhorar o fluxo de materiais. As duas principais metodologias utilizadas neste projeto foram o Estudo do trabalho e o SMED. O projeto iniciou-se com a análise e diagnóstico da área a estudar e o levantamento de dados relativos à área da Vulcanização para organização e definição do layout. O passo seguinte deste projeto passou pela definição dos tempos padrão por fila de prensas, tendo em conta as características das filas e dos pneus, considerando tarefas principais e auxiliares, aplicando correções para fadiga, descanso e perturbações, obtendo um tempo-padrão médio de 14,4 segundos. Com a obtenção do tempo-padrão (pneu/homem) foi possível fazer o balanceamento da área e apresentar três propostas distintas para a distribuição dos operadores na Vulcanização. Os principais indicadores usados para validar cada uma das propostas foram a taxa de ocupação, a carga manipulada por operador e o risco de lesões músculo-esqueléticas. Por fim, foi aplicada a metodologia SMED nas mudanças de molde com o objetivo de reduzir o tempo de setup, com um ganho potencial de cerca de 40% através da redução dos tempos de espera com uma melhor organização das equipas nas mudanças de moldes e da conversão de tarefas internas em externas.
The master dissertation reports the results obtained through the study that was done in the Vulcanization area, on the company Continental Mabor. Those companies who wish to be market leader, in the automotive sector, must have, in their main politics and priorities, the new product introduction. This factor forces the company to constants arraignments e to apply methodologies in order to improve their performance. The main methodologies that will be studied in this project are: work study and SMED. This project begun with the analysis and diagnosis of the area to be studied e the lift of data regarding to the Vulcanization area in order to rearrangement and definition of the layout. The next step of this project was to define the standard time for row of presses, considering the rows and tires characteristics, main tasks and auxiliaries, applying correction for rest, fatigue and disturbance, obtaining an average time of 14,4 sec. With the obtaining of the standard time (tire/man) it was possible to balance the area e to introduce three different proposals for the operation distribution in Vulcanization. The main indicators to validate each one of the proposals were the occupational rate, material manual handling and the risk ok low back disorder injuries. In the end, it was applied the SMED methodology in the mold change with the purpose to optimize and reduce the setup time, obtaining a potential gain of 40% through the waiting time reduction with a better organization of the teams involved in the mold change and the conversion of the internals tasks in externals tasks.
