Abstract:
The pragmatics of vulgarisms and swearingSwear words are well-suited to express emotion as their primary meanings are connotative. The emotional impact of swearing depends on one’s experience with a culture and its language conventions. The present paper aims to compare the definitions of vulgarism in order to determine why some words are considered vulgar and from which their thematic areas originate. What is more, attention should be drawn to the phenomenon of change in meaning and register, which is particularly evident in the case of vulgarisms.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the use of expletives and derogatory terminology in the naming structure for companies, products and brands; a marketing strategy which is growing across a wide range of industries. The author defines this concept as brand vulgarity and explores the practice, as it situates in the midst of irony, as terms commonly held as taboo and societally indecent, are moving into the mainstream. Design/methodology/approach This study draws on the established literature in branding, profanity and ironic marketing to create a conceptual framework through which to understand brand vulgarity. Findings Brand vulgarity is intended to capture attention. However, several factors influence consumer receptivity and acceptance. These factors include perceived offensiveness exposure and the reclaiming and reappropriation of vulgar terms. Brand vulgarity not only challenges traditional approaches to nomenclature in branding but the building of brand image as well. Social implications The marketplace has become a brand war demarcated by fierce competition each entity vying for attention. The use of vulgar terminology and the growing ease of consumer receptivity calls to question changes in sociocultural sensitivity and its influence on social acceptance of brand vulgarity. Originality/value This work breaks new ground as the first to introduce the concept of brand vulgarity and examine the practice across multiple industries.

Abstract:
The epigraphic material from the region of Naissus, in spite of its relative scarcity and poor state of preservation, offers valuable examples of Vulgar Latin usage. Interesting phenomena include an instance of the imperial name Pertinax in the form Pertenax, which may be due to a vulgar reinterpretation of the name (?Very Tough?, cf. Constans, Valens, sim.) and may imply rhizotony (Pert?nax); the adjective superstantes ?survivors?, apparently the issue of two consequent vulgar developments, superstes > superstens (hypercorrect spelling) > superstans (false analogy); an isosyllabic 3rd declension nominative singular, Melioris (from the name Melior), as well as a 3rd decl. dative singular generi from the 2nd decl. noun gener ?son-in-law?; an early borrowing from Germanic, brutes ?daughter-in-law?; a ?weak? future participle, sequiture, for secuturae; the bastard noun volumptas, cf. voluntas and voluptas; a correlative construction with sic...sic for quemadmodum...sic; and the verb adjuvare followed by a dative, which illustrates a vulgarism known from the Glossaries. Another kind of vulgarity, which is rather a matter of simplicity than purely linguistic incompetence, is found in cases such as an epitaph whose dedicator calls herself bene merita; or a semi-metric inscription-a commaticum-whose actual text may be the outcome of tampering with a regular epigraphic poem

Master degree final research paper provides weed germination dynamics (annual, perennial and predominant weeds sorts) and red beet productivity data when researching residual effect of various organic mulches and different thickness layers. Object of the work – red beet (Beta vulgaris var. vulgaris) crop. Method of the work – to compute weed sprouts each field was divided into four permanent sites 0.2 x 0.5 m. These were observed every 10 days from May 20 till August 30. Each weed species sprouts were counted and torn out. Number of weeds was translated into units. m-2. According to biological grouping of weeds annual and perennial were distinguished. Predominant weed species were established. Red beet productivity was determined by weighting. Received yield from the field was translated into t ha-1 totally useful red beet yield. The results of work. Most of the weeds germinated in the 3rd decade of May – 765.6 weeds number m-2 and 1st decade of June – 270.6 weeds number m-2. Later germination of the weeds decreased in the plots of all treatments. Straw, peat and grass mulches, previously incorporated, moderately (4.7 to 6.7 percent) stimulated weed germination during the entire study period. The different residual effect of mulches was determined for germination of annual weeds. The incorporated peat and grass mulches promoted germination of the annual weeds from 5.2 to 12.6 percent. Echinochloa crus - galli were found thicker by 20 percent in the plots that in previous... [to full text]

Abstract:
Recently, special concern has been shown to common thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), essential oil of which has a valuable ingredients and is of interest for different uses. The purpose of the research was to study the influence of polyfunctional microbial preparations on the enzymatic activity of T. vulgaris, which is grown under conditions of the foothill zone of the Crimea. In field experiments on southern Chernozem, we studied the influence of “Biopolycid” and “Cyanobacterium consortium” preparations on the activity of catalase and polyphenol oxidase enzymes in leaves of T. vulgaris. The microbial preparations were spread onto the top layer of the soil once at the stem-extension stage. In this case, their use promoted efficient plant-microbial interaction, i.e. induction of antioxidant enzyme activity, increasing stress resistance of plants. Thus, in the foothills of the Crimea, according to the results of the first year of research, it was proved that top-soil dressing with polyfunctional microbial preparations “Biopolycid” and “Cyanobacterium consortium” increased the enzymatic activity of T. vulgaris plants
