Full textAddiction has been a problem for centuries. However, it wasn`t until the 1930s that research in this field was conducted systematically. At that time, the main focus was the wife of the alcoholic. Thirty years later the first stress-theories evolved. The theories showed that the husband´s drinking triggered the wife´s stress. During the next decade, the effect of alcohol-/ drug abuse on family and relatives, was studied, as well as the different ways in which they coped with these stressfull situations. The current study sheds light upon the thought and experiences of the adult children of addicts, with a focus on conceptions of quality-of-life. The thesis is based on a qualitative study conducted by interviewing individuals who had grown up in families where adults had addiction problems. The results show that the respondents are progressing to a higher quality-of-life. Still, there is more quality-of-life to achieve. It is also important to highlight the situation of children, and adult child perspectives in society - not just those of individuals who have an addiction

Full textThe aim of this degree project is to find out how people who have grown up in families with addiction problems have experienced their childhood and how their adult life has been affected by this. With the help of qualitative interviews with four grown up children to addicts, knowledge has been gained about what was experienced as problematic during childhood, what was beneficial and compensatory as well as how they feel today. The results have shown that their childhood was affected by a deficiency in the ability to parent, weak networks, adjusting, responsibility, a feeling of being left out and few positive experiences. Factors that have been protective are: important people, interests as well as attitude. In adult life many habits from childhood remain. Those who took part in the study have been affected by their childhood in the form of social and emotional problems, but also in their attitudes towards alcohol. The study has shown a need to work on their childhood, but also that their childhood has given the participators important experiences.

Full textHederström, E The invisible elephant. Adult children's own stories about how it is to grow up with one or both parents’ alcohol abuse. A work that describes the influence of vulnerable children from the home environment, with a focus on adult children's own stories about their childhood.Degree project in social work 15 credits. Malmö University: Faculty of health and society, Department of social work, 2017.The purpose with this study is to find out how adult children with alcoholic parents have experienced their childhood and upbringing and if their experiences have influenced their way of life. I've therefor asked adult children to tell me their own stories from their childhood, so that I can get an insight in how an abusive upbringing can change their way of life. I've chosen to use a qualitative method, in the form of surveys with questions where the informants answer freely and openly. The study is based upon these research questions. - How does the informant, in their adult life, look at their childhood with one or both parents abusing alcohol? - In what way have their upbringing changed or influenced the informant’s way of life today? - How is the informant’s relationship with the parent/parents today? The study is based upon three different theories, risk and safety factors, resilience and social inheritance. The result shows that children with parents abusing alcohol are a heterogeneous group where every single individual have their own story. It has clearly shown that all the informants’ different stories are unique. The one thing they all have in common, though, is that they're all affected by their upbringing with one or both parents abusing alcohol.
