Na základě vyhlášení rezoluce o rozdělení Palestiny se měly zfonnovat dva samostatné státy - jeden židovský a jeden arabský. Židovský stát v květnu 1948 opravdu vznikl, ale v Palestině již půl roku probíhala občanská válka. Britové do ní nezasahovali, snažili se z oblasti co nejrychleji stáhnout. Konflikt, který se po jejich odchodu naplno rozhořel, vstoupil do izraelské historiografie pod názvem Válka za nezávislost; do palestinské jako al-Nakba - Zkáza. Tisíce arabských obyvatel musely (ať už z vlastní vůle, nebo z nutnosti) židovský stát opustit, většina z těchto uprchlíků a jejich potomků
