Abstract:

Abstract:
Goal. Investigate the herbistatic properties of the herbicide Granstar Pro 75, w.g., regarding its effect on the germination of Amaranthus retroflexus L. seeds, to ensure targeted and rational use in wheat crops, with maximum preservation of the crop and minimal environmental impact. Methods. Laboratory, visual, computational and comparative, mathematical and statistical. Results. It was established that after using the herbicide Granstar Pro 75, w.g., with consumption rates of 15.0 g/ ha, 20.0 g/ ha and 25.0 g/ ha in in vitro conditions there was inhibition of the germination of the seeds of common sedum. According to research data obtained under in vitro conditions in Petri dishes on filter paper, in all repetitions of the third and fourth versions of the experiment, where the herbicide Granstar Pro 75, w.g., with consumption rates of 20.0 g/ ha and 25.0 g/ ha, respectively, the level of reduction in the germination of seeds of common sedum was 100.0%. The level of reduction of the germination of the seeds of common styrica in all repetitions of the experiment variant in Petri dishes on filter paper, where the herbicide Granstar Pro 75, w.g., with a consumption rate of 15.0 g/ ha, compared to the control was 83.8%. At the same time, 30 days after treatment in vitro on filter paper and in the soil in the variants of experiments where the herbicide Granstar Pro 75, w.g., with consumption rates of 15.0 g/ ha, 20.0 g/ ha, and 25.0 g/ ha, there were no germinated seeds at all, the level of reduction in germination was 100.0%. The total level of reduction of the germination of the seeds of common sedum in the soil was the highest in the fourth variant of the experiment, where the herbicide Granstar Pro 75, w.g., with a consumption rate of 25.0 g/ ha — 76.8%. However, compared to the total indicator of the decrease in germination of seeds of the third variant of the experiment in the soil where the herbicide was applied with a consumption rate of 20.0 g/ ha, the specified indicator of the fourth variant of the experiment improved by 4.4%. Conclusions. According to the data of the research, it was found that the level of germination of the seeds of the common milkweed was reduced due to the use of the herbicide Granstar Pro 75, w.g., with consumption rates of 15.0 g/ ha, 20.0 g/ ha and 25.0 g/ ha, in vitro conditions in Petri dishes both on filter paper and in soil. At the same time, herbicidal properties were better manifested in the experiments that were performed in vitro on filter paper due to direct contact of the herbicide with the object of research, which ensured 100.0% control of the germination of the seeds of common sedum in the variants where the herbicide Granstar Pro 75, w.g., with consumption rates of 20.0 g/ ha and 25.0 g/ ha. The leading fact of the in vitro research is the establishment of a clear tendency to decrease the germination of the seeds of common sedum in the soil, which is observed on the 10th day after treatment with the herbicide, which gives grounds to record the indirect effect of the herbicide Granstar Pro 75, w.g., with consumption rates of 15.0 g/ ha, 20.0 g/ ha and 25.0 g/ ha, for seed germination. Accordingly, compliance with the regulations for the use of this drug, as well as other requirements for the introduction of herbicides, taking into account the presence of herbicidal properties, can help reduce the chemical load on the environment.

Abstract:
The article examines the interrelation of photograph and text in W.G. Sebald’s On the Natural History of Destruction (2001). This intermediality is, indeed, characteristic of Sebald’s work in both fiction and non-fiction. On the Natural History... belongs to the latter category, an involved and emotional examination of the collective repression in the consciousness of the German people of the carpet-bombing of Germany at the end of World War II. Here too the photographs have a function which goes far beyond that of testimony, the images constructing a complex plot within and with the text, on the level of both expression and content. What they produce is a new and singular “third language”, the only idiom capable of dealing with such complex issues of pain and blame, repression and memory.

Abstract:

Abstract:
When Baroque keyboard works are performed on the piano, some pianists try to imitate the sound of the harpsichord and clavichord. Others try to avoid this by applying performance practices of the Romantic period to Baroque keyboard works, for the sake of musical expression. The aim of this study is to determine which alterations can be made to the performance of Baroque keyboard works on the piano to ensure a musically expressive, yet stylistically acceptable result. The following aspects are investigated: The production and quality of sound, as well as technique of playing at the harpsichord, clavichord and piano. The possibilities of musical expression at these instruments are also compared. The manner of accomplishing musical expression within a Baroque keyboard work, in terms of appropriate tempo, dynamics and articulation. The extent to which the sound qualities of the piano can be utilised when performing Baroque keyboard works on the piano. This study proves that the alterations made to the performance of Baroque keyboard works on the piano can be of such nature that the unique sound possibilities of the piano are utilised, but that the performance still corresponds to Baroque performance practice.

Cawood, Megan. "Invisible landscapes : landscape, memory and time in W.G. Sebald's Austerlitz." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/7464.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 82-84).
The eponymous protagonist of Austerlitz, W.G. Sebald's final prose novel, is haunted by landscapes of loss. Both Austerlitz and the narrator are acutely aware of the signs of destruction and of the invisible histories of loss in the landscapes through which they travel. Through the gaze of both these characters Sebald exposes the haunted wasteland of post -war Europe and describes the sites of many of the atrocities of the Holocaust. While much has been written about Sebald's use of landscape and his emphasis on memory, there is very little research to date that has taken a phenomenological approach to Sebald's texts. There are specific affinities, for example, between the musings of the protagonist and the narrator of Sebald's Austerlitz and Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of perception. This dissertation explores the implications of Merleau-Ponty's existential phenomenology as an approach to Sebald's Austerlitz, by showing that while phenomenology provides a valuable conceptual framework through which to engage the novel, there are aspects of this phenomenological approach which Sebald's work, in its narrative form, is able to extend beyond the boundaries of philosophical discourse. The central argument is that Austerlitz's perception of architectural sites is inextricably linked to aspects of memory and narrative. This dissertation first explores the thematic concerns of the outworking of traumatic memory in the spaces of architecture, in the subjective experience of time, and in the act of perception; after which it examines how Sebald's narrative technique creates a text-scape which implicates its reader's gaze.

Lavis, Grahame J. "Pastoral modes in the poetry and prose fiction of W.G. Sebald." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2015. http://research.gold.ac.uk/12489/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I extend the discussion of the works of W.G. Sebald beyond the more commonly discussed themes of melancholy, trauma, loss and memory. To this end I examine his long prose poem After Nature and his four books of prose fiction Vertigo, The Emigrants, The Rings of Saturn and Austerlitz to expose underlying pastoral modes and structural forms in these texts. In After Nature I make the case for this poem to be read as an anti-pastoral text which runs true to the elegiac form but exhibits a subtext of pastoral and anti-pastoral tension. The first published work of prose fiction, Vertigo, I argue demonstrates the pastoral structural device, integral to pastoral form, of the double-plot and in so doing, extend William Empson’s original thesis. In The Emigrants, I examine the parallels between Heimat and Pastoral by exposing the characters’ difficult relationships with displacement both physically and psychologically and argue for an anti-Heimat mode expressed largely in anti-pastoral imagery. The Rings of Saturn demonstrates the impossibility of utopia by constantly deferring a potential pastoral both spatially and temporally during the narrator’s “pilgrimage” across the Suffolk countryside. And finally in Austerlitz, we have a coalescence of pastoral modes structured as a discourse of retreat and return which, I argue, qualifies this work as a truly pastoral novel. In the final chapter I discuss the four short pieces of prose fiction in Campo Santo, which, although too brief to exhibit a pastoral form, demonstrate pastoral tropes commensurate with those discussed in the previous works.

Abstract:
W. G. Sebald intimately binds stylistic pursuit with an ethical and political design. This project spotlights the poetological coherence of his narrative prose by developing the notion of shifting writing. Far from a hematic description, it represents a frame that is incessantly reassessed by the writing strategies : Sebald’s key use of displacement lies in subverting the positions of speech. If the general perspective of the narratives is provided by the familiar presence of a first person narrator, the reader is nonetheless disorientated by the various techniques which are examined here, step by step, from their tangible aspects to their ethical implications. Studying the materiality of the text reveals the affinities of Sebald’s writing with Levi-Strauss’s “bricolage”. The German prose is sprinkled with images and quotations in foreign languages, but these cannot be said to be inserted : in the absence of captions or translations, the materials resist inclusion. Within the narrative, a singular use of quotation and reported speech animates the writing with an allological movement : the preeminence of the enunciator gives way to a mesh of voices with porous boundaries. As for the construction, its plasticity means that network prevails over structure. Such techniques convey an archaeological vision of time which is reflected in the syntax and the semantics, punctuated with archaisms and regionalisms. With a melancholic, sometimes humourous outlook, Sebald’s poetics skilfully arouses the emotions of the reader who is faced with a lucid vision of the world and its history

Abstract:
When the mind turns more than one would wish towards questions of – as W.G. Sebald puts it – the “natural history of destruction”, comparative consideration by artists and interdisciplinary scholars is directed to the interstices between images, novel, essay, (auto)biography, memorial and travelogue. Artists have been among Sebald’s most prolific interpreters – as they are among the more fearless and holistic researchers on questions concerning what it means never to be able to fix an identity, to tell a migrant’s story, or to know where a historical trauma ends. Sebald has - as this book attests - also given artists and scholars a means to write with images, to embrace ambiguity, and to turn to today’s migrants with empathy and responsibility; as well as to let academic research, creation and institutional engagement blend into or substantially inform one another in order to account for and enable such necessary work in the most diverse contexts.

Abstract:
For modern high efficiency aero-derivative combustion turbines there is an urgent need for ultra high efficiency inlet air filters with a low initial pressure drop. Often high efficiency filters are associated with high pressure drop (e.g. HEPA). In this paper, through a mathematical analysis and design optimization, a new type of ultra high efficiency (>97% for 0.3 μm diameter particle), high capacity, and low pressure drop (0.5” w.g. at face velocity of 500 fpm) combustion turbine filter, particularly suitable for applications in the urban environment is presented. In mathematical analysis, a closed form analytical solution from Navier-Stoke’s equation for air flow between filter pleat spacing with uniform mass addition and extraction is applied to each finite element along the pleat channel. The optimum pleat aspect ratio is obtained by combining the expressions for the axial pressure gradient for upstream channel with mass extraction, the axial pressure gradient for downstream channel with mass addition, and the filter media flow characteristics for finite elements along the filter pleat channel with varying wall flow rates.

Abstract:
Abstract Gas injection is one of the most commonly used enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods. However, there are multiple problems associated with gas injection including gravity override, viscous fingering, and channeling. These problems are due to an adverse mobility ratio and cause early breakthrough of the gas resulting, in poor recovery efficiency. A Water Alternating Gas (WAG) injection process is recommended to resolve these problems through better mobility control of gas, leading to better project economics. However, poor WAG design and lack of understanding of the different factors that control its performance might result in unfavorable oil recovery. Therefore, this study provides more insight into improving WAG oil recovery by optimizing different surface and subsurface WAG parameters using a coupled surface and subsurface simulator. Moreover, the work investigates the effects of hysteresis on WAG performance. This case study investigates a field named Volve, which is a decommissioned sandstone field in the North Sea. Experimental design of factors influencing WAG performance on this base case was studied. Sensitivity analysis was performed on different surface and subsurface WAG parameters including WAG ratio, time to start WAG, total gas slug size, cycle slug size, and tubing diameter. A full two-level factorial design was used for the sensitivity study. The significant parameters of interest were further optimized numerically to maximize oil recovery. The results showed that the total slug size is the most important parameter, followed by time to start WAG, and then cycle slug size. WAG ratio appeared in some of the interaction terms while tubing diameter effect was found to be negligible. The study also showed that phase hysteresis has little to no effect on oil recovery. Based on the optimization, it is recommended to perform waterflooding followed by tertiary WAG injection for maximizing oil recovery from the Volve field. Furthermore, miscible WAG injection resulted in an incremental oil recovery between 5 to 11% OOIP compared to conventional waterflooding. WAG optimization is case-dependent and hence, the findings of this study hold only for the studied case, but the workflow should be applicable to any reservoir. Unlike most previous work, this study investigates WAG optimization considering both surface and subsurface parameters using a coupled model.

Abstract:
Abstract Ula field is operated with Water Alternating Gas (WAG) injection. Since 2014, all Jurassic field production is attributed to WAG tertiary recovery mechanism. A 2006 study which focused on core from the 7/12-A-9 A surveillance well demonstrated that theoretical WAG performance was a reality at reservoir conditions. Residual oil saturation of 35-50% after water flood (Sorw) could be reduced to a residual oil saturation after miscible flood (Sorm) of 5-10% in the most efficiently flooded layers. The evidence and pattern of flooding from A-9 A was overwhelming and enlightening. Clear demonstration of laboratory-based miscible flood theory was proven at reservoir conditions. A stratigraphic WAG distribution in the reservoir was identified which prompted modification of the reservoir model and led directly to the establishment of a new field injection strategy that has been followed ever since. The Ula infill drilling (UID) programme of 2019-20 was based upon the replacement and repositioning of established WAG wells. This would re-focus the WAG sweep to new, un-swept areas of the field, and protect the crestal offset well locations by installation of new well stock. 7/12-A-7 D was designed as a new Southern Crest Producer to replace the aging A-12 A. The optimal location was decided c.400m north of A-12 A and 40m up-dip, within the established A-7 C - A-12 A WAG segment, as proven by 4-D seismic and production history response. The location provided a new opportunity to evaluate the WAG efficiency at reservoir conditions, this time on the crest and close to a major producer. Sufficient uncertainty in log-based data and saturation measurement accuracy supported a repeat of the A-9 A core-based data acquisition programme. Results from the core analysis demonstrate a high WAG efficiency in specific layers but confirm the challenge of being able to effectively flood a more substantial profile of the reservoir column. The outcomes are broadly in line with expectations. WAG is proven and the depth of WAG sweep is encouraging, covering 1/3 of the reservoir column. Residual oil saturation after water sweep (no WAG) is also demonstrated to reach low levels, supporting continued water flooding on the flank.

Abstract:
Abstract Water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection is a gas-based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique used to overcome problems related with gas injection including gravity override, viscous fingering, and channeling. The WAG EOR technique is used to control gas mobility, which boosts project economics. Water alternating gas (WAG) has the dual benefit of higher recovery than continuous gas injection and CO2 sequestration. Higher sweep efficiencies and conformance control have been shown to increase the life cycle net present value (NPV) for improved field development and deployment planning. Nevertheless, a poor WAG design often results in unfavorable oil recovery. This study investigates WAG optimization in a sandstone field using a hybrid numerical-machine learning (ML) model. In this work, we present a hybrid neural approach for optimizing the WAG injection process that can be easily integrated as a workflow with any existing reservoir simulator for optimal WAG parameters to maximize reservoir life cycle cumulative recoveries. The reservoir simulator is treated as a sample generator to form an ensemble of recovery scenarios with the WAG parameters as inputs to a dense neural network (DNN) and outputs/labels as cumulative recoveries. The neural network then serves two roles: 1) a readily available map between WAG parameters and cumulative recoveries for reduced computational cost and hence faster on-demand evaluation, and 2) as a repository condensing important correlations that can be appended with additional samples or reduced by removing redundant samples (simulation runs). Consequently, the hybrid neural approach also provides a clear picture of which simulation runs (or samples) are more conducive to optimal recovery predictions for an effective strategy to sample the high dimensional WAG parameter space and reduced compute times. This becomes especially important when we consider field scale optimization scenarios with multiple wells each with their separate injection schedules requiring exponentially increasing samples with a brute force ensemble approach (add an example in the introduction section or later and cross-refer here).

Abstract:
Abstract This paper is based on a study performed on an offshore Middle East field. The field is a giant complex mostly carbonate oil field, which is characterized by a thin oil column, a low permeability associated with fractures, a large transition zone and a lateral variation in fluid properties. Even after an extensive and efficient water-flood development, there are substantial amounts of oil remaining in the reservoir due to the highly oil-wet nature of the rock. Various Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques have been envisaged to enhance oil production. The most mature one is the immiscible hydrocarbon Water Alternating Gas (WAG) injection. This High Pressure (HP)-WAG project started in September 2012 after the encouraging results of the continuous Low Pressure (LP) gas injection trial performed in 2008. This paper presents the latest analysis of the performances of this HP-WAG project. The HP-WAG project performances is evaluated through (i) the oil gain (versus a water-flood baseline), (ii) the water injectivity evolution over the WAG cycles, (iii) the gas management and (iv) the well and surface integrity. The paper also aims to share the methodology for analyzing the contribution of the main mechanisms occurring over the WAG cycles: the oil-gas interaction mechanisms and the desaturation mechanisms. The oil-gas interactions that occur in immiscible gas injection cases lead to significant long-lasting WAG effects thanks to both the swelling effects that continue even once the oil is saturated and a permanent mobility ratio improvement. The contribution of both macroscopic and microscopic oil desaturation is also described and quantified in this paper. The work presented in this paper has evidenced the HP-WAG technique benefits and has improved the understanding of the impacts of the main mechanism occurring in the reservoir. This knowledge paved the way towards more extensive WAG deployment on the field. It also emphasized the need of laboratory experiments to calibrate the three-phase models and the absolute need of compositional models to capture the entire WAG benefits even in immiscible gas injection cases.
