The article is devoted to the analysis of the parody ballad by W. M. Thackeray "The Legend of St. Sophia of Kioff" (1839). An attempt was made to indicate the source of information about Kyiv, which could be found in Jane Porter’s historical novel "Thaddeus of Warsaw", written according to the testimonies of Polish emigrants. The ballad is interpreted as a traditional for English oral and written literature genre, which has acquired formal signs of printed text. All these signs are present in Thackeray's ballad, including the division into chapters, a functionally significant paratext, topical

In the wake of Foucault's influential retelling of the history of sexuality, a new school of censorship theory emerged that was devoted to exposing and unpacking the paradoxically productive effects of censorious practices. Set at the time of the Napoleonic Wars and written in the 1840s, the novel casts light on the controversial nature of the notion of gentleman. In the Victorian period, gentlemanliness came to be modelled on the principles of chivalry but there was nevertheless an implicit assumption originating from the Regency era that being a gentleman meant yielding to leisurely elegance rather than performing heroic deeds. An analysis of the present day Hindi, as spoken in the northern part of India, brings to light the fact that this language has at least twenty vowel phonemes, and not simply thirteen. Twelve of these twenty vowel phonemes are oral while eight of them are nasalized. Eighteen of them are pure vowels (monophthongs) while two of them are diphthongs. Two of the thirteen vowels included in the current list of alphabet have given place to two consonants with the result that they have ceased to exist. Most of these vowel phonemes occur in all the three positions, namely initial, medial and final, in t

Abstract Introduction/Background: The autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is a disorder of impaired lymphocyte apoptosis commonly associated with defects in the FAS gene in the CD95 signaling cascade. Childhood onset lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly and autoimmune cytopenias are characteristic clinical presentation of ALPS. The immunophenotypical hallmark of ALPS is the expansion of "double negative" TCR-__+T lymphocytes (DNTs) that lack both CD4 and CD8 markers and when these cells comprise more than 1.5% of all circulating lymphocytes. Patients with ALPS are at increased risk for B-c

A different name than English literature, ‘Anglo-Indian Literature’, was given to the body of literature in English that emerged on account of the British interaction with India unlike the case with their interaction with America or Australia or New Zealand. Even the Indians’ contributions (translations as well as creative pieces in English) were classed under the caption ‘Anglo-Indian’ initially but later a different name, ‘Indo-Anglian’, was conceived for the growing variety and volume of writings in English by the Indians. Abstract:
This article takes up the social production of race in nineteenth-century India through picaresque fiction. Through readings of Rudyard Kipling, Dion Boucicault, and W. M. Thackeray, it shows how picaresque form served as a specific mechanism of racial stabilization, a means of producing a consciously stopgap racial binary through the intervention of a third, triangulating racial term: Irishness. Understanding the triangular structure of whiteness’ “shapeshifting” brings into sharper relief the connections between three important scholarly foci regarding race in India: the ambiguous and fluid

The relationships between feature film and literature are typically conceptualized from the perspective of film adaptations. Although numerous shared points between them are noticeable, typically feature films are not treated as literary works tout court. The paper focuses on the difference between the medium and literature, which allows us to look at any feature film as literature in the film medium. “Empirical media studies” (U. Saxer, W. Faulstich) provides the methodological foundation for the paper, and three representative examples are discussed. The first two are extremely different from

Abstract:
Over the past two years, findings from several research studies published in highly influential journals pointed to a critical involvement of mitochondria in the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV2 infections. Among the most exciting findings are the involvement of (i) the “mitochondrial ROS–HIF-1α –glycolysis” axis, (ii) the “cGAS–STING” signaling, and (iii) the “mitochondrial apoptotic cell death” pathway.
