Full textThis topic outlined the importance of translation of Xitsonga novel which is translated in Xitsonga by G.S. Mayevu. This showed how translation is so important in Xitsonga language. Mayevu and other translators had tried their level best to better the Xitsonga language through translation. This research pointed out in details problems which translators come across and how these problems can be overcomed. In this research, we also realised how scarce students who are doing translation are. The researcher also recommend that translation be taken into consideration in the world at large because people can together, discuss and agree on issues through translation.

Full textThis paper analyses narrative style in Kithaka wa Mberia’s plays. The plays analysed are Natala (1997), Kifo Kisimani (Death at the Well, 2001) na Maua Kwenye Jua la Asubuhi (Flowers in the Morning Sun, 2004). The elements of narrative style analysed are proverbs, songs/dances, voice and epic. Narrative style has a long history in oral literature. It has been integrated into written literature and thus lost its initial outlook which had led to its disregard by many analysts in the past. The objectives of this essay are to discuss narrative style in the selected plays, and to show how it functions to create empathy on the part of the reader which helps her/him to internalyse the themes conveyed. Furthermore, this essay intends to stimulate further research on narrative style in Swahili drama

Full textHyponymy is a sense relation existing between general lexemes (hypernym) and the specific ones (hyponym). For instance, a hypernym parent includes hyponyms like father and mother. The hyponymy relation was regarded by earlier linguists that it could exist only amongst nouns. However, recent studies indicate that hyponymy can also be manifested in other categories such as adjectives, adverbs and verbs. Though there is hyponymy relation existing amongst Kiswahili verbs, various scho¬lars have tended to focus on nominal hyponymy and disregard verbal hyponymy. Therefore, this article has analyzed the hyponymy relation existing amongst selected Kiswahili verbs. In this regard, 24 verbal hypernyms from Kiswahili dictionaries were purposively sampled and their specific hyponyms indicated. Componential Analysis theory by Katz and Fodor has been used in the analysis of these hyponyms. The theory focuses on distinctive features of specific hyponyms that are normally shown by the use of specific signs [+, -]. The data on verbal hyponymy was observed from the Kiswahili dictionaries by the application of symbolic or syntactic approach propounded by Hearst, and Snow et al in order to identify the hypernyms and specific hyponyms in a sentence. These hyponymy relations are analyzed and presented using the set theory style

Full textThe thematic study of commitment in ngugi wa thiong'o's work is analysed in five novels and four plays. The work is enriched by the extra-literary work of essays and interviews. We have divided it into three parts. The irst part seeks to define commitment and analyses its manifestations in the attitudes and the reactions during colonial and post independence periods in kenya. This gives to ngugi wa thiong'o an occasion to recreate fictional forces in which his characters reveal their choices as they react to the various situations. The 2nd part looks into the language issue and its communicating power in relationship to the theme of commitment. It surveys the use of the oral traditional means of communication (songs, dances, proverbs and sayings). The analysis of the schematic mode of communication introduces us to the issue of the new public of ngugi wa thiong'o and looks into the problems of publishing in an african language, the case of the kikuyu language. The 3rd part explores the symbolic universe of words, images and symbols. It surveys the art of story telling and analyses the point of view. So, most characters studied have no way out but to choose sides. This is found in their words and their actions. Their creator is not spared either for we find him playing at the civic role in the midst of contradictions and conflicts in his society

Full textThis study investigates the ambivalent traits of third world postcolonialism. Third world postcolonialism appears as an antithesis against the logical fallacy of the binary oppositions performed by the contemporary first world postcolonial theory and practice. The division between the first and the third world postcolonial aesthetics is due to their different interpretations and practices of the term 'postcolonial,' respectively.

This dissertation, assuming the architecture of grammar of Distributed Morphology (DM), aims to present the description of the morphosyntactic/semantic traces present in the contexts of use of -ga, morphological marker of the nominative Case, and of -wa, marker of both the thematic and contrastive topics in the Japanese language. It identifies which are the strings of the morphosyntactic/semantic traces involved in the different contexts in which the nominative marker -ga and the topic marker -wa appear in the sentences and which specific combinations of such traces generate the different interpretations associated with each marker. A brief retrospective on the notion of case is presented, and the abstract as well as the morphological Cases are treated, and a distinction between them is drawn. The referenciality and the definiteness traces of the DPs in japanese are tackled as well, and it was established a relation with the notions of categorical sense and thetic sense. The markers -ga and -wa are described as Vocabulary Items that are inserted to indicate the contrastive and non-contrastive focus DP and the thematic or contrastive topic DP respectively, the morphosyntactic/semantic traces (such as the exhaustivity and the contrastivity) are presented and some specific phenomena such as the marking of the nominative object and the alternation between the genitive marker and the nominative marker in the DPs focused are analysed. This dissertation is concluded with the presentation of the set of rules of insertion of the Vocabulary Items -ga e -wa in the contexts studied.
