Ching, Lena Lei. "Ka wa ma mua, ka wa ma hope." Thesis, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/6916.

Full text
Abstract:
Hawaiian navigators oriented themselves without instruments by using a system based upon knowing where they came from and by having faith in the words of their ancestors. As a Hawaiian artist, I am embarking on a journey in which I orient myself in much the same way. When translated from our language, "ka wa ma mua" literally means "the time in front." However, in Hawaiian thinking, it describes the time that came before this time in which we live. In the same vein, "ka wa ma hope" literally means "the time in back" or from a Hawaiian perspective, the time which follows this time in which we live. "It is as if the Hawaiian stands firmly in the present, with his back to the future, and his eyes fixed upon the past, seeking historical answers for present-day dilemmas." (Kameʻeleihiwa, 1992) We Hawaiians view the world looking to that time that came before us because it is rich in knowledge. Looking to my ancestors and knowing the history of our people strongly influences how I view the world and contributes greatly to the forming of my relationship with it. I look to the past also to learn more about my Hawaiian identity. As a Hawaiian in today's world, I realize that part of the process requires that I engage in the task of decolonizing my mind. My thesis exhibition is an attempt to express through imagery one aspect of this decolonization. It is only one part of the process and one avenue of many through which an artist can express resistance to further erosion of our life ways. Looking to the past, recognizing that I was raised as a colonized person is one step towards better understanding the importance of my Hawaiian identity. Awareness of this part of my past is another step in the process of decolonization.

Abstract:
The title of this paper gives three variants of what historically is the same name: Koti = the present-day indigenous name of Koti Island; Ngoji = the older form of the same name; Angoche = the official name of the town, adapted from the name of the AKoti people EKoti is the language of Angoche, a town on the coast of Nampula Province, in Mozambique. EKoti is in most respects very similar to the neighbouring coastal varieties of Makhuwa, but it also has many lexical and morphological items that are derived from Swahili. My colleague F. U. Mucanheia, co-author of our forthcoming grammar of EKoti, has recorded a story about the origin of Koti Island and its people. In the present paper, I summarize the text of this oral tradition, and I compare it to the dynastic traditions from Angoche and to those found in the Kilwa chronicle, pointing out differences but also establishing links.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the problems caused by the linguistic features used by speakers as the basis of determining their social identity. The concept of identity is broad and closely related with socio-cultural and eco-spheres environment of the speakers. The speaker’s identity is determined by employing both social and linguistic features in the overall analysis. The linguistic features include the whole range of language use, from phonetic features to lexical units, syntactic structures and family names. This paper therefore argues that the speaker’s linguistic features pose some problems in determining the speaker’s identity. The first problem concerns the concepts of language and dialect which are defined differently by different scholars. The second problem refers to multilingual speakers with diversified linguistic competence, and lastly, it has been noted with concern that some speakers use artificial family names which are not from their ethnic origin, hence complicating the process of determining the identity of the speakers.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
For the past 150 years studies on Kiswahili language, literature and culture have engaged the scholarly attention of many researchers (Hauner 1979. In their analyses of Kiswahili literary works, however, most critical studies have, generally, tended to neglect the aspect of artistic design. Instead, the central focus has primarily been on two interlocking aspects of these works: (1) their content, values or thematic messages and (2) their cultural and socio-historical contexts (Dorsey 1988). This widespread tendency to undervalue the importance of artistic design in Kiswahili literary works is not surprising as it was largely promoted by some of the earlier European authorities who popularised the idea that Kiswahili literature `is not of literary interest´ and `that social, cultural, and historical commentary by anthologists are more relevant to this literature than literary study´ (Biersteker and Plane 1989:451). It is encouraging to see, however, that in recent years more and more scholars, like Mlamali (1980), Fiedel and Shariff (1986), Biersteker (1991) and Mbele (1996), to mention but a few, address issues of artistic design in their critical appraisals of Kiswahili literary works. This article is a modest attempt to follow their example by looking at Utenzi wa Shujaka as an object of design; how the poet has used the technical instruments of verbal craftsmanshjp in his bid to elicit an aesthetic response from his audience.

Mayevu and other translators had tried their level best to better the Xitsonga language through translation. This research pointed out in details problems which translators come across and how these problems can be overcomed. In this research, we also realised how scarce students who are doing translation are. The researcher also recommend that translation be taken into consideration in the world at large because people can together, discuss and agree on issues through translation.

Abstract:
Kithaka wa Mberia (b.1956) is one of the most innovative Kenyan poets. Until now he has published four collections of poems and three plays. His poems contain a strong political and social criticism, sometimes in the form of animal allegories. He condemns various acts of violence done to women, like rapes of schoolgirls or prostitution caused by poverty. Some compositions seem life-stories of real persons, others are overtly didactic and moralizing, but in all the theme of social justice is almost obsessive. Another group of poems highlights the author’s concern with his surroundings and with the “health conditions” of the Earth in general; thus, for instance, he denounces the devastation of Kenyan soil in order to get foreign currency. His love of nature makes him address affectionate verses to animals, insects and plants. Formally the poems have little in common with the poetic tradition of the Swahili coast as they are in free verse. Kithaka exhibits a rich vocabulary of botanical and zoological terms and is fond of various forms of word-playing like chiming and punning; an important role in his poetry is played by parallelism. Moreover, he introduces into Kiswahili visual poems where typography is relied upon to perform expressive effects. Kithaka wa Mberia, together with other East African contemporary poets, proves that Swahili poetry is able to express universal themes and can reach a high artistic value even without repeating traditional models.

Tamthilia zenyewe ni Natala (1997), Kifo Kisimani (Death at the Well, 2001) na Maua Kwenye Jua la Asubuhi (Flowers in the Morning Sun, 2004).
This paper analyses narrative style in Kithaka wa Mberia’s plays. The plays analysed are Natala (1997), Kifo Kisimani (Death at the Well, 2001) na Maua Kwenye Jua la Asubuhi (Flowers in the Morning Sun, 2004). The elements of narrative style analysed are proverbs, songs/dances, voice and epic. Narrative style has a long history in oral literature. It has been integrated into written literature and thus lost its initial outlook which had led to its disregard by many analysts in the past. The objectives of this essay are to discuss narrative style in the selected plays, and to show how it functions to create empathy on the part of the reader which helps her/him to internalyse the themes conveyed. Furthermore, this essay intends to stimulate further research on narrative style in Swahili drama

Abstract:
Hyponymy is a sense relation existing between general lexemes (hypernym) and the specific ones (hyponym). For instance, a hypernym parent includes hyponyms like father and mother. The hyponymy relation was regarded by earlier linguists that it could exist only amongst nouns. However, recent studies indicate that hyponymy can also be manifested in other categories such as adjectives, adverbs and verbs. Though there is hyponymy relation existing amongst Kiswahili verbs, various scho¬lars have tended to focus on nominal hyponymy and disregard verbal hyponymy. Therefore, this article has analyzed the hyponymy relation existing amongst selected Kiswahili verbs. In this regard, 24 verbal hypernyms from Kiswahili dictionaries were purposively sampled and their specific hyponyms indicated. Componential Analysis theory by Katz and Fodor has been used in the analysis of these hyponyms. The theory focuses on distinctive features of specific hyponyms that are normally shown by the use of specific signs [+, -]. The data on verbal hyponymy was observed from the Kiswahili dictionaries by the application of symbolic or syntactic approach propounded by Hearst, and Snow et al in order to identify the hypernyms and specific hyponyms in a sentence. These hyponymy relations are analyzed and presented using the set theory style

VUNINGOMA, JAMES-FRANCI. Nice, 1989. http://www.theses.fr/1989NICE2016.

Full text
Abstract:
The thematic study of commitment in ngugi wa thiong'o's work is analysed in five novels and four plays. The work is enriched by the extra-literary work of essays and interviews. We have divided it into three parts. The irst part seeks to define commitment and analyses its manifestations in the attitudes and the reactions during colonial and post independence periods in kenya. This gives to ngugi wa thiong'o an occasion to recreate fictional forces in which his characters reveal their choices as they react to the various situations. The 2nd part looks into the language issue and its communicating power in relationship to the theme of commitment. It surveys the use of the oral traditional means of communication (songs, dances, proverbs and sayings). The analysis of the schematic mode of communication introduces us to the issue of the new public of ngugi wa thiong'o and looks into the problems of publishing in an african language, the case of the kikuyu language. The 3rd part explores the symbolic universe of words, images and symbols. It surveys the art of story telling and analyses the point of view. So, most characters studied have no way out but to choose sides. This is found in their words and their actions. Their creator is not spared either for we find him playing at the civic role in the midst of contradictions and conflicts in his society

This study investigates the ambivalent traits of third world postcolonialism. Third world postcolonialism appears as an antithesis against the logical fallacy of the binary oppositions performed by the contemporary first world postcolonial theory and practice. The division between the first and the third world postcolonial aesthetics is due to their different interpretations and practices of the term 'postcolonial,' respectively.

This dissertation, assuming the architecture of grammar of Distributed Morphology (DM), aims to present the description of the morphosyntactic/semantic traces present in the contexts of use of -ga, morphological marker of the nominative Case, and of -wa, marker of both the thematic and contrastive topics in the Japanese language. It identifies which are the strings of the morphosyntactic/semantic traces involved in the different contexts in which the nominative marker -ga and the topic marker -wa appear in the sentences and which specific combinations of such traces generate the different interpretations associated with each marker. A brief retrospective on the notion of case is presented, and the abstract as well as the morphological Cases are treated, and a distinction between them is drawn. The referenciality and the definiteness traces of the DPs in japanese are tackled as well, and it was established a relation with the notions of categorical sense and thetic sense. The markers -ga and -wa are described as Vocabulary Items that are inserted to indicate the contrastive and non-contrastive focus DP and the thematic or contrastive topic DP respectively, the morphosyntactic/semantic traces (such as the exhaustivity and the contrastivity) are presented and some specific phenomena such as the marking of the nominative object and the alternation between the genitive marker and the nominative marker in the DPs focused are analysed. This dissertation is concluded with the presentation of the set of rules of insertion of the Vocabulary Items -ga e -wa in the contexts studied.

Lai, Woon Pun Betsy. "A workplace exercise intervention in China : an outcome and process evaluation." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/51725/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to study a worksite exercise intervention for sedentary workers in China. This involved a 10-minute Qigong exercise session twice a day. Four inter-related studies examined the development, implementation, and evaluation of this intervention. First, a feasibility study demonstrated that short exercise breaks could be integrated into the workday routine for employees with sedentary job roles. Second, a pilot study was conducted to test the intervention under research processes. Third, a waitlist controlled trial study showed increases in employees’ physical activity between baseline and post-intervention for intervention (n=193) and waitlist control (n=83) participants, but no changes in work performance or sickness absence. And finally, a process evaluation using RE-AIM framework, i.e. Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance, was conducted using data from focus groups, document analysis, and exercise log reviews. In terms of reach, the exercise intervention was successfully marketed to all employees. In terms of adoption, it was considered that organisational support to implement the intervention was good. The intervention had been implemented broadly as planned. There was high exercise acceptance, but a gradual decrease in exercise adherence through the intervention period. With regard to maintenance, there was no clear management plan to sustain the programme beyond the period of study. To the author’s knowledge, this research is the first to test the effectiveness of worksite exercise in China. It is recommended in future that such interventions focus further on the study of implementation and include outcomes more proximal to the intervention such as job satisfaction and work engagement.
