Abstract:
Sago palm has the highest starch content compared to the other source of carbohydrate crops such as cereal and tuberous crops. Sago palm can produce about 200-400 kg per trunk after 7 to 10 years. This research aimed to characterize several sago palm accessions in Aimas, Sorong District, West Papua Province, Indonesia. Eight sago palm accessions were studied, Waruwo, Wasulagi, Wasenan, Wayuluk, Wagelik, Wanegles, Wawun and Wafabala. Among these accessions, there were many diff erences based on trunk morphological characteristics which includes trunk height, diameter, circumference, and bark thickness, leaf number, length of rachis, length of petiole, and spine. Five accessions with potential yield of more than 200 kg dry starch per sago trunk are Waruwo, Wasulagi, Wasenan, Wayuluk and Wagelik. Stem morphological characters aff ect palm sago production, because the starch is located in the pith of the stem.

Abstract:
Evidence for the early Postglacial use of upland environments in the Mesolithic in various parts Britain has been known for a long time. However, until relatively recently such evidence had been remarkably absent from upland south Wales, which includes some of the highest mountain ranges in southern Britain. In this paper we report on new work at the upland location of Waun Fignen Felen which consists of discrete Early and later Mesolithic artefact scatters on the edge of a former lake basin. In describing this example, we focus on the timing of Mesolithic movements into the interior uplands and examine the relationship between humans and the landscape, particularly in respect to the long distance transport of materials and factors likely to have influenced the choice of site location. Some comparative observations are made on the use and perception of landscapes by ethnographic hunter-gatherers.

Abstract:
Hormonal imprinting occurs perinatally when the developing receptor and the appropriate hormone meet each other. The presence of related molecules in this critical period causes misimprinting. Ligands bound to a member of the steroid-thyroid receptor superfamily can disturb the normal maturation of other members of the family, which is manifested in altered binding capacity of the receptor and decreased or increased response of the receptor-bearing cell for life. Excess or absence of the hormone also can cause misimprinting. Treatments once a week for 3 weeks of nursing rat mothers with 6 mg/animal all-trans retinol/dose caused faulty imprinting manifested in significantly reduced density (Bmax) of thymic glucocorticoid receptor in male and female adult progenies alike. 0.03 mg all-trans retinoic acid treatment of nursing mothers was ineffective. Receptor affinity (Kd)wasun-changed in both cases as well, as the binding values of uterine estrogen receptors. The results of the experiment call attention to the transmission of imprinter molecules by breastmilk to the progenies, which can cause lifelong alterations at receptorial level and points to the human health aspect. Possible reasons for the differences between retinol and retinoic acid effects and in the sensitivity of receptors are discussed.

Abstract:
The freshwater ichthyofauna of the Fiji islands remained poorly documented before the establishment of the Pacific-Asia Biodiversity Transect (PABITRA) network. The PABITRA approach assesses biodiversity along ocean-to-mountain transects and promotes sustainable land use on islands across the Pacific. Multiple surveys of freshwater fish species along the Viti Levu PABITRA transect have contributed six new occurrence records and one new species to the known freshwater fishes of Fiji since 2002. In total, 21 indigenous species of fish (9% endemic) from 10 families and no introduced fishes were found in the three PABITRA sites. Diversity was highest (16 species) at Savura forest reserve and decreased further inland into Sovi and Wabu. The assemblage found is dominated by highly migratory species (95%) that traverse the different aquatic habitats (marine, estuarine, lowland and upland streams) covered by the PABITRA transect. This high degree of connectivity highlights several growing issues affecting aquatic fauna on the high island of Viti Levu. The reduction in forest cover along the gateway transects, especially in the terminal reaches, and infrastructure development such as dams and weirs have deleterious effects on the migration routes of the Fijian ichthyofauna. Several species collected are important food sources and have cultural totemic importance to local inhabitants along the vertical transect. This paper documents the ichthyofauna of the Fiji gateway transect, ecological characteristics of this assemblage, IUCN Redlist conservation assessment status and highlights factors affecting the fragility and resilience of these communities, particularly focusing on the importance of life-history patterns and watershed conditions.

Abstract:
AbstractThe small waterstriders of the subfamily Trepobatinae have radiated extensively on New Guinea and in surrounding archipelagos. All of the marine forms of the subfamily are found in this region, with the exception of one monotypic genus occurring on brackish water in the eastern tropical Pacific. The present study, the fourth in a series of reports dealing with Melanesian Trepobatinae, covers these regional marine taxa. The tribe Stenobatini, proposed in Part 1 of this series to hold the genera Stenobates Esaki, type-genus, plus Rheumatometroides Hungerford and Matsuda, and Stenobatopsis gen. n. (as undescribed genus 2), is revised, two new genera are proposed, and keys to genera and species are provided, followed by synonymies, diagnoses and discussion of the constituent genera. The following new taxa are proposed within the Stenobatini: Pseudohalobates gen. n., monobasic, type-species S. inobonto sp. n. from Indonesia (Celebes, Moluccas, Talaud Archipelago, Biak and Yapen islands, and Vogelkop Peninsula of Irian Jaya), and the Philippines (southern Mindanao); Stenobatopsis gen. n., monobasic, type-species S. stygius sp. n. from Halmahera; Thetibates gen. n., type-species Rheumatometroides serena Lansbury, from northern Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands; Rheumatometroides kikori sp. n. from the Kikori delta of southern Papua New Guinea; R. insularis papar n. ssp. from Sabah, north Borneo; R. sele sp. n. from the Vogelkop Peninsula of Irian Jaya; R. wabon sp. n. from Biak Island; Stenobates fakfak sp. n. from the Vogelkop Peninsula of Irian Jaya; S. kamojo sp. n. from Biak Island, Salawati Island, Yapen Island, and the Vogelkop Peninsula of Irian Jaya; S. kasim sp. n. from Salawati Island; S. labuha sp. n. from Bacan and Halmahera; S. langoban sp. n. from Palawan; S. sangihe sp. n. from the Sangihe Archipelago; and S. zamboanga sp. n. from Mindanao. Other nomenclatural changes: Rheumatometroides carpentaria (Polhemus & Polhemus), comb. n.; Rheumatometroides insularis insularis (J. Polhemus & Cheng), comb. n.; Stenobates makraitos (Chen & Nieser) comb. n.; Thetibates matawa (Lansbury), comb. n. [ = Rheumatometroides aqaaqa (Lansbury), syn. n.]; Thetibates serena (Lansbury), comb. n. Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to examine the making and development through the pattern in which the roof tiles have been produced and distributed in the area of Kyungju. According to the technical characteristics and combination patterns of the flat and Roof-end tiles, the tiles were divided into three main types. The author examined the method of production by system. As a result, it was found that each tile making responded to the tile demand throughout the capital by sharing information such as standard, wadang patterns, and the use of early rock mules, while maintaining independent production based on different manufacturing methods. Later, at some point in the 7th century, tile-making methods are stereotyped, existing sizes are changed little by little, and there is a change in the appearance of low-grade wadang patterns that are easy to distribute and use, regardless of differences in production relics. This means that there is a governmental system of production in the Gyeongju area and multiple groups of tile makers are incorporated into the system. In other words, similar changes in the system are being identified in the same period Baekje and Ginai in Japan in a way that leads to the efficiency of the production and distribution structure through institutional readjustment rather than dismantling existing groups. With the advent of tile styled of Reunified Shilla another change occurs in tile production. From the late 7th century onwards, it is a change that focuses on the visual aspect focused on design, including the creation of new and diverse wadang patterns for a certain period of time, the replacement of Wabum structures to effectively decorate them, and the use of differentiated tile components. But this pattern does not deviate significantly from the framework of the state-run production system formed seven centuries ago. The analysis of the two cases of Jungbyun structure s Yeonhwamun Roof-end tiles shows that a number of Wabums and Roof-end tiles were produced in common at various production sites, and this phenomenon is not much different from those of the Silla-styled Yeonhwamun Roof-end tiles dating back to the 7th century. However, the willingness of those days to produce quality roof tiles with elegant patterns rather results in the concentration of some groups of productive forces, such as pottery sites of Geumjangri and Dakyung. Intensive production of the engraved Amkiwa in the 8th year of Uibong is also the result of this transition. Later, as the 8th century entered, tile production was reorganized: the flat tiles were produced fewer and their weight became lighter while the design was schematized. If reflects the tendency that the functional value was prefered.

Abstract:
In 2011 GudjuGudju Fourmile, elder of the Gimuy Walubara Yidinij people, asked me to work with him, as an architect, on the conceptual design for a facility for Indigenous people with acquired brain injury. I have been working with Indigenous people on projects since 1995, but this is the first time that I have worked as a sub-consultant to an Indigenous Design Manager. This is a critical change from being engaged by non-Indigenous organisations, or the Government, to provide services to or with Indigenous people. Being directly instructed and lead by Indigenous Construction and Training Company (ICTC) and guided by the Fourmile family has lead me to an experience of intercultural design practice; an experience full of new learning, excitement and challenges, patience and respect.

Abstract:
The present study was performed with elderly people in the Association of Shelter for the Elderly - Wajun Kai of Maringá after the approval of the Ethics Committee in Research of Unicesumar and the signing of the Term of Free and Informed Consent. Five healthy elderly individuals, aged 65-85 years, were randomly selected and excluded from the study were individuals with neurological diseases, wheelchair users, and those with comprehension deficits. In the sequel, the elderly were evaluated for balance using the Berg Scale, flexibility through the sit-and-reach test with the Wells bench, SF-36 quality of life, and agility using the Time Up and Go test. After completion of the evaluation, the dance practices were performed, which consisted of 10 sessions, performed in a group, lasting 40 minutes, using different rhythms, stretching and muscle relaxation. Subsequently, the participants were reassessed using the same instruments to verify the results achieved and the data obtained were analyzed in a descriptive way, and it was possible to conclude that the dance associated with kinesiotherapy contributed to the balance and the quality of life of the treated elderly.

Abstract:
Sixteen sites in and around a small upland bog in South Wales were investigated by means of pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating. Most of the sites have ombrogenous (blanket) peat overlying a thin basal mor with abundant charcoal. A Devensian Late-glacial basin filled with muds and reedswamp deposits is shown to underlie the blanket peat in part of the area. It is concluded that the outlet of the basin was probably blocked by the development of ombrogenous peat, perhaps around 6500 years BP (though not closely dated), which spread across the basin and later up its western shore. The pollen diagrams are divided into a series of pollen assemblage zones. The zone boundaries appear synchronous within the limits of the methods. Hazel played an important role in the woodland vegetation of the pre-peat mineral soils. This woodland had generally been replaced by heath and blanket peat by about 6000 years BP. Nevertheless, some woodland apparently persisted locally in areas where peat or mor accumulation had not yet begun. Alder appears to have been established in the basin area by ca . 7000 years BP and to have spread more widely some 500—1000 years later, possibly taking advantage of environmental damage caused by Mesolithic man, evidence of whose occupation is found in the area. It is concluded that Mesolithic man was probably responsible for making a small clearing in the woodland at ca . 8000 years BP when the first mor deposit began to accumulate. Heath vegetation first came into existence at about this time and there is circumstantial evidence of maintenance by burning. Heath conditions lasted in some areas until ca . 5500 years BP and on the more permeable soils podsolization took place. It is argued that the accumulation of relatively impermeable mor soils under heath was a major factor in the initiation of ombrogenous peat growth. This most generally began in the period ca . 5500-5800 years BP though it was both earlier ( ca . 7600 years BP) and later ( ca . 4000 years BP) in some areas. A comparison is made of the behaviour of certain pollen curves at the major sites in which it is found that sites with common features fall into spatially coherent groups. It is concluded, therefore, that the pollen diagrams often reflect vegetational changes taking place in relatively small areas. A reconstruction of the vegetational changes in the 4000 years after ca . 8000 years BP is made by means of a series of maps. The classical elm decline of the Atlantic-Sub-boreal transition ( ca . 5000-5500 years BP) is variably represented and there follows a series of three other declines or minima dated to ca . 4600 years BP, ca . 4000 years BP and ca . 2850 years BP (though again with some possible variability). The Bronze Age appears to have been a time of major human impacts on the local vegetation with some woodland regeneration taking place in the earlier Iron Age before a renewed period of clearance that persisted through Romano-British times.
