Abstract:
A novel now commonly used device in many countries called a “weed-wacker” is a mechanical rotating device with a cord used to trim lawns and grass. A case of a 14-year old boy with a false aneurysm of the brachial artery is presented; he sustained a missile injury by a piece of rusty steel projected by use of a weed wacker. Missile injuries by nail guns and bullets have been documented in the literature; however, this mechanism of injury by a weed-wacker has never been previously described and is presented as a unique mechanism of injury and brings attention the issue of safety with the use of the weed-wacker.

Abstract:
Compared with the widespread use of Pd-catalyzed Wacker-type oxidation of olefins, iron catalysis for this transformation is almost virgin territory. Our work on an iron-catalyzed Wacker-type oxidation through reductive activation of dioxygen is discussed here. This novel single-electron-transfer process not only addresses the issues of the Pd-catalyzed two-electron Wacker-type oxidation, but also possesses unprecedented functional-group tolerance and chemoselectivity. Importantly, the catalytic system uses ambient air as the sole oxidant, and it permits late-stage oxidations of complex molecules.

Abstract:
AbstractOver the past years, Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidative couplings have enabled the construction of molecular scaffolds with high structural diversity via C–C, C–N and C–O bond-forming reactions. In contrast to the use of stoichiometric amounts of more common oxidants, such as metal salts (Cu and Ag) and benzoquinone derivatives, the use of molecular oxygen for the direct or indirect regeneration of Pd(II) species presents itself as a more viable alternative in terms of economy and sustainability. In this review, we describe recent advances on the development of Pd-catalyzed oxidative cyclizations/functionalizations, where molecular oxygen plays a pivotal role as the sole stoichiometric oxidant.1 Introduction2 Oxidative C–C and C–Nu Coupling2.1 Intramolecular Oxidative C–Nu Heterocyclization Reactions2.1.1 C–H Activation2.1.2 Wacker/Aza-Wacker-Type Cyclization2.1.3 Tandem Wacker/Aza-Wacker and Cyclization/Cross-Coupling Reactions2.2 Intermolecular Oxidative C–Nu Heterocoupling Reactions2.3 Intramolecular Oxidative (C–C) Carbocyclization Reactions2.4 Intermolecular Oxidative C–C Coupling Reactions2.4.1 Cyclization Reactions2.4.2 Cross-Coupling Reactions2.4.3 Homo-Coupling Reactions3 Aerobic Dehydrogenative Coupling/Functionalization4 Oxidative C–H Functionalization5 Summary

Abstract:
The development and optimisation of conditions for oxidative Wacker-type cyclisations followed by establishing the reaction scope are reported. Building upon the achievements in the field of oxidative Wacker-type reactions that has recently gathered interest, hydroxylamines and hydrazines were converted to isoxazolidines and pyrazolidines respectively. Secondary hydroxylamines cyclised yielding syn-isoxazolidines with excellent diastereoselectivities, whereas secondary hydrazines cyclised yielding anti-pyrazolidines but still maintained a high level of diastereoselectivity. Additionally, an enantioselective variant was explored. Isoxazolidines were successfully transformed to the corresponding 1,3-amino alcohols, which were further converted to amino sugar derivatives.

Geulin, Anselme. "Synthèse de 3-amino-3-désoxyglycals par réaction d'aza-Wacker." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Normandie, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024NORMIR42.

Full text
Abstract:
3-Amino-3-deoxyglycosides (ADGi) constitute an essential class of glycosides found in the structure of several important bioactive compounds. 3-Amino-3-deoxyglycals (ADGa) are promising donors for these ADGi. The glycal moiety allows ADGa to serve as donors of 2-deoxy-ADGi by glycosylation in the presence of an acceptor, or as donors of 1,2-trans-ADGi through an epoxidation / glycosylation sequence. This thesis work focuses on developing a new synthetic route for these ADGa, taking advantage of two key reactions: a Ferrier reaction followed by an aza-Wacker (AW) reaction in oxidizing conditions with carbamate type tether. This AW step enables C3-N bond formation and glycal reformation in a single step. Based on modified conditions from the literature using 1,4-benzoquinone (p-BQ), we obtained ADGa corresponding to the D-Glucal, D-Galactal, L-Rhamnal, and L-Fucal series, using DMF as the solvent. These ADGa were obtained orthogonally protected, and a proof of concept for their selective deprotection was demonstrated on the model ADGa. Finally, the ADGa derived from D-Galactal was subjected to an epoxidation / glycosylation sequence to synthesize a disaccharide with excellent yield and selectivity. The use of DMF as a solvent also allowed us to establish conditions for the AW cyclization, using dioxygen from the air as a reoxidant for Pd(0). The selectivity of the amidopalladation step was then examined for the two systems. After deuteration of the Ferrier adducts, we demonstrated that amidopalladation proceeded trans in both reoxidizing systems, starting from carbamates derived from D-Glucal and D-Galactal. Finally, two by-products of interest were studied. The first is a formal 1,3-functionalization of the model carbamate, and the reaction conditions for its synthesis were optimized. The second is a hexa-2,4-dienal derivative, which was isolated and fully characterized

Abstract:
Abstract Silicone materials are very appropriate for dielectric elastomer (DE) transducer applications due to their distinguished mechanical and electrical characteristics like high elasticity and an efficient electromechanical behavior. Since the material parameter permittivity influences significantly the work output, Wacker Chemie AG developed a new silicone named ELASTOSIL® Film 5030 with increased permittivity for improving the work output. Within this contribution, the mechanical characteristics including the hyperelasticity and electromechanically coupled behavior is compared to standard silicone material ELASTOSIL® Film 2030 from Wacker Young’s modulus of both materials are obtained conducting tensile tests, while the electromechanical behavior is characterized by investigating a planar single layer DE transducer. The new material has a similar Young’s modulus compared to the standard material. Furthermore, the electrically actuated deformation of the planar single layer DE transducers made form new silicone is proportional larger to its permittivity and inversely proportional to its Young’s modulus under same electrical field applied.

Abstract:
Abstract The evolution and facies distribution of relatively small carbonate platforms, approximately 30 km2, are not well documented, even though they are common in ancient and modern carbonate systems. This study investigates platform evolution and facies distribution of a Miocene carbonate platform in Central Luconia, offshore Malaysia. An integrated approach, including core-described lithofacies, well-log correlation, and seismic analysis, allowed for mapping depositional facies and platform evolution through time. The platform was divided into five stratigraphic zones (1 [top], 2 Upper, 2 Lower, 3 Upper, 3 Lower [bottom]) separated by low porosity intervals. Five depositional facies groups were recognized in core samples: (1) bioclastic wacke-packstone facies deposited in a platform interior, (2) bioclastic packstone facies deposited in backreef environments, (3) coral boundstone facies deposited at the reef margin, (4) interbedded shale and carbonate facies deposited on the slope, and (5) argillaceous carbonate facies deposited across the platform as flooding layers. Well D penetrated almost the entire platform, and facies in that well changed upward from mainly bioclastic wacke-packstone at the bottom to mainly bioclastic packstone in the middle to coral boundstone near the top before being covered by interbedded shale and carbonate. Six seismic facies characterizations were generated and combined with well data to map the five facies groups through time. The platform shows repeated backstepping of facies at flooding layers followed by aggradation of facies belts up to exposure surfaces, resulting in a long-term backstepping of depositional environments until the platform drowned. Sr-isotopes dating near the top of this platform yielded an age of approximately 12 Ma.
