Abstract:
We develop a numerical method to study the long-time behavior of continuous-time random walks characterized by superheavy-tailed distributions of waiting time. To test the method, we consider symmetric jump-length distributions with both finite second moments and heavy tails for which the asymptotic behavior of the walking particle is known exactly. Our numerical results for the distributions of the particle position are in excellent agreement with the analytical ones. Abstract:
There has been an enormous growth in the Internet usage in recent years, fueled by the increasing number of multimedia applications and widespread availability of World Wide Web (WWW). The end-user generally accesses these applications through web browsing activities. These time-critical services often suffer from the delays ranging from small chunks to long peaks which can have severe implications on the Quality of Experience (QoE). Hence, it is worthwhile to identify the impact of different variations of delay on the end-user QoE. This research focused on the end-user QoE for three different

Dimakou, Sofia. "Waiting time distributions and national targets for elective surgery in UK : theoretical modelling and duration analysis." Thesis, City University London, 2013. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/2947/.

Abstract:
Waiting times for elective surgery constitute a key performance indicator for the NHS. The principal policy response has been to introduce maximum waiting time targets against which performance is measured and rewarded. The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the mechanism of patients’ admittance for elective surgery in UK by examining the whole distribution of their waiting times from an empirical and theoretical perspective. In Chapter 2, we empirically investigate the effect of government targets on the distribution of patients’ waiting times by applying duration analysis techniques to w

In seismology, an important goal is to attain a better understanding of the earthquake process. In this study of the physics of aftershock generation, I couple statistical analysis with modelling of physical processes in the postseismic period. I present a theoretical formulation for the distribution of interevent times for aftershock sequences obeying the empirically well established Omori law. As opposed to claims by other authors, this work demonstrates that the duration of the time interval between two successive earthquakes cannot be used to identify whether or not they belong to the same

Abstract:
Abstract The Swedish railway has during many years received low customer satisfaction scores. Reasons for this are reliability, service and information concerns. The focus of this master thesis lies on the railway platform. The platform is an important part to the factors above as its information and facilities, which constitute a part of the service before the trip, could contribute in causing delays and reliability issues. This study investigates the behaviour of passengers on railway platforms and the effect that information, seats and entrances along the platform has on that behaviour. The

Abstract:
Despite its potential multiple contributions to sustainable policy objectives, urban transit is generally not widely used by the public in terms of its market share compared to that of automobiles, particularly in affluent societies with low-density urban forms like Australia. Transit service providers need to attract more people to transit by improving transit quality of service. The key to cost-effective transit service improvements lies in accurate evaluation of policy proposals by taking into account their impacts on transit users. If transit providers knew what is more or less important t

Abstract:
The works contributes to the need to design more efficient heating and domestic hot water preparation systems. Dynamic building and simulation plays an important role in the development of domestic hot water (DHW) preparation systems for residential buildings, in order to evaluate and optimize the final energy and the DHW comfort. The case study of this work is a big multi-family building composed of 96 flats. District heating (DH) is used to heat up the water in the storage tank located in the technical room. A distribution system connects the storage to all the fresh water stations (FWS) loc

Abstract:
We propose a situation in which a single employee is responsible for processing incoming claims to an insurance company that can be classified as being one of two possible types. More specifically, we consider a priority-based system having separate buffers to store high priority and low priority incoming claims. We construct a mathematical model and perform queueing analysis to evaluate the performance of this priority-based system, which incorporates the possibility of claims being redistributed, lost, or prematurely processed.
