This article explores the emergence, operation and outcomes of social partnership in the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland and Wales. Social partnership emerged in the NHS following political devolution in 1998 which transferred powers to left-wing governments in Scotland and Wales. These arrangements helped improve health services, modernize industrial relations and enhance staff terms and conditions. In NHS Scotland, union participation in strategic decisions produced extensive co-operation to dismantle the internal health market, improve services and enhance staff terms and conditio

Sex differences in mortality among historical populations are an intriguing yet neglected issue. In mid-nineteenth-century England and Wales, although women and girls enjoyed an overall longevity advantage, they tended to die at higher rates than males at ages when modern life tables show female advantage. We use multilevel modeling to analyze these sex differences in mortality. We identify significant regional variation, related to local demographic conditions, economic structure, and the nature of female employment. This dramatic change is due in part to the fact that infectious diseases are now both preventable and curable and are no longer a major cause of death. Abstract Child Care Law in England and Wales has recently been radically changed by the Children Act 1989. In Scotland recent changes have been minor and piece-meal. There has been no unified approach to the Public and Private Law aspects of child care and the law has to be searched for in the common law and in a mass of separate legislative provisions which do not always sit easily with each other. Many are out of keeping with modern social conditions and attitudes. It is clear, however, that the pressure for real change has been building and is long overdue.

The transport of goods by sea has, since its origins, had to contend with three significant challenges: adverse navigation conditions, deterioration, and, finally, theft, which varied in frequency and severity depending on the situation. Human genius has tried, over the centuries, to eliminate, or at least mitigate, these three critical issues with solutions that have correlated and that have taken into account various aspects alongside the condition of conduction and unloading/loading of goods. The West India Docks in London provide a unique case study in addressing the problem of cargo protec

Green walls are bio-filters developed to enhance air quality. Often, these walls form the base from which plants are grown; and the plant-wall system helps to remove both gaseous and particulate air pollutants. Green walls can be found indoors or outdoors and they are classified as passive or active systems. Their benefits include temperature reduction, improvement of air quality and reduction of air pollution, oxygen production as well as the social and psychological wellbeing. They can produce changes in the ambient conditions (temperature and humidity) of the air layers around them which cr

Abstract Brazil has a wide mesh of pipelines, of which more than 8,500 kilometers are operated by TRANSPETRO. Pipeline right-of-ways cross a variety of soil relief, including the Serra do Mar, a formation of scarps, in order to transport petroleum products from the coast to the largest cities in the country. Anchored retaining walls are commonly necessary for soil stabilization. An efficient risk management is required for these structures, to avoid social, economic and environmental damages in case of poor performance. A case study of 77 anchored walls was presented. These include fleet management, charter party agreements, piracy, regulatory factors such as Emission Control Areas, port congestion and port awareness, economic factors such as cost of fuel and charter rates, and human factors (safety, comfort, attitude, and education). I call them “social factors” because they all have the characteristic of being created by our society, rather than being driven by the laws of physics. Rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders (RMDs) affect approximately one-third of the UK population, yet access to timely and equitable care remains inconsistent. National audits have highlighted significant variations in service provision and health outcomes, shaped by individual socio-demographic characteristics and place-based factors. Rural populations, comprising around 20% of the UK, face unique challenges due to geographic remoteness, centralised specialist services, and an ageing demographic. Workforce constraints and service accessibility further exacerbate these disparities, limiting
