Huland, Gabriel. The Syrian Conflict in the News. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9780755650101.

Abstract:
The Syrian conflict constitutes one of the most covered events in this century. Although the coverage of the Syrian uprising and civil war alternated between periods of saturation and silence, it is indisputable that they received an enormous amount of media attention. The Syrian Conflict in the News analyses the coverage of the Syrian conflict in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, focusing on how the three newspapers framed six key events in Syria from March 2011 to April 2018, including the Ghouta chemical attack, the Russian intervention in Syria and US-led airstrikes. Gabriel Huland argues that US foreign policy dominates the frames of the conflict, which suggests that mainstream newspapers are excessively indexed to elite narratives. In the United States, the Syrian crisis prompted an intense debate about the appropriate degree of US involvement in the civil war and how the country should behave in the face of growing Russian and Iranian influence in the Middle East. The overreliance on elite narratives resulted in the underrepresentation of local voices and other players who were in a more advantaged position to devise solutions to the conflict. By analysing the frames of the Syrian uprising and civil war in three mainstream newspapers and the relationship between media and international conflicts, The Syrian Conflict in the News sheds light on crucial aspects of the crisis currently pervading US journalism.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on wartime expectations of death and destruction. Instead of anticipating a glorious war that would revitalize the nation, many Americans expected a ruinous conflict that would bring death to their doors. Women understood how a future beyond their control would arrive with letters, newspapers, and telegrams. Meanwhile, African Americans prayed for a conflict that would endure long enough to destroy slavery. Instead of imagining a future shaped by historical actors, these Americans believed impersonal or supernatural forces would determine their future. Diverse people felt this way, from women at home to refugees on the road, from former slaves to Wall Street speculators, from generals and statesmen to common soldiers.

Abstract:
Collections and "collecting" are keywords that have in recent years been reintroduced into the focus of library considerations – not least under the influence of the all-embracing present trend of "digitalization", but also because of the attention currently being paid to the cultural heritage, its preservation and presentation. Against this background, the retrospective consolidation of existing collections and the continuation of collecting traditions continue to be pursued by German regional libraries in particular. This book adheres to the goal of publicizing the special collections handed down in the regional libraries as a source for research projects. However, the volume's attention is directed towards those segments within the libraries’ inventories that one does not necessarily expect, that are sometimes considered curios, and sometimes even constitute a distinction of uniqueness. The collections presented in this volume embrace a great variety of subjects, ranging from collections of miscellanies pertaining to theater, dance and ballet, of New Year's wishes and leaflets issued by funfair operators, of death sentences, wall newspapers and numismatics to collections of socialist and anarchist literature of the 19th century, writings and memorabilia concerning the German South Sea and China missions of the early 20th century to the history of shorthand.
