Johnson, Shannon Art College of Fine Arts UNSW. "Omen wallpaper." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. Art, 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/43296.

Abstract:
This paper brings together past and contempary elements that play a role in the body of work, I prepared in the Master's project and which I call, 'Omen Wallpaper'. The title draws on the idea that 'omens' as signs and 'wallpaper', as a decoration somewhat on the periphery, surround us in the urban environment. The paper begins by describing the influences and historical movements from which I have drawn. These range, for example, from. Duchamp, Schwitters to Rauschenberg, Warhol and Basquiat. Many of these traditions share the idea of 'anti-art', particularly 'anti painting', manifested in the use of found materials, text and 'unpainterly' techniques like printing and collage. The paper then moves in to ideas more local to me and this body of work, as for example, graffiti. I explore styles of graffiti and some of the most significant artists of this movement. Artists such as 'Misstic' from Paris and 'Banksy' I also investigate some of the problematics associated with that territory, by describing the conflicts I encounter in my research. I also consider another type of' street aesthetic' that operates in a different way, exploiting the general decay and wear and tear of posters. I focus this part of my enquiry, on the French Nouveaux Realist, Jacques de la Villegle who has worked with this medium since the 1950's. Villegles work began central to my research in Paris as well as becoming a inspiration for adopting the technique of 'affiches laceries' or 'tom posters'. This technique allows one to capture a moment culturally, stylistically and randomly amoung many other things with minimal mediation which became a significant turning point in the development of my own style.

Nay, Catherine Anne. "American wallpaper, 1870-1900." Virtual Press, 1989. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/544000.

Abstract:
Wallpaper is a significant decorative finish of late nineteenth century interiors. Determining the appropriate approach for treatment in situ, execution of a custom reproduction, or the selection of an appropriate reproduction for a "period look" requires extensive research by an interior designer. The integrity of the historic interior can be lost or compromised during the restoration or rehabilitation process if it is based on misguided decisions. The conservation principles established in the Venice Charter and the criteria or guidelines established in the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation must be considered before a plan is implemented. The emphasis of this thesis will be establishing a methodology which addresses the design issues confronting interior designers with regard to historic wallpaper in the context of restoration and rehabilitation or adaptive use projects. The period of 1870-1900 reflects a major change inexhibitions have examined aspects of this complex period and it style and the peak period for production and use of American wallpaper. This is the most misunderstood period with regard to wallpaper because the rejection of wallpaper by the modern movement lingers today. In the past decade, four major museum is now being viewed as a critical cultural and artistic watershed.Through research, an appreciation of the various patterns and colorways will be developed. The technological innovations which affected the quality and quantity of wallpaper will also be examined. Documentation of wallpaper for this period will also include reference collections, interior photographs taken during the period, and examination of original sources written during or preceding the period. A survey of what documented reproductions are available on the market today and which are appropriate for interiors of American buildings constructed in the decades 18701900 will be reviewed. Books have been written on the subject of wallpaper, but a single reference does not exist with the information and guidelines needed by designers working on restoration and rehabilitation projects. The selected case studies examine the restoration and rehabilitation approaches to wallpaper. Conclusions were drawn from the diverse projects to reveal the broad range of appropriate treatments or solutions in the context of projects and issues.

Abstract:
We  are  heading  into  a  world  that  is  becoming  more  and  more  digital.  In  the  future  markets,  customers   will   demand   that   some   sort   of   technical  support  is  available  when  they  make  purchases.   This   put   a   big   responsibility   on   companies  that  have  to  satisfy  that  need.  The  wallpaper  industry  has  not  incorporated  many  efficient  support  tools  to  facilitate  the  product  selection at Swedish retailers. This results in that customers  experience  many  issues  when  they  search for new wallpapers. Through a needfinding process, where customers   were   observed   at   retailers,   eight   primary  customer  needs  could  be  established  in  the  project.  These  were  ranked  after  their  relative   importance.   The   results   showed   that   the  most  important  needs  to  satisfy  was  to  give  customer’s  inspiration  and  help  them  visualize  wallpapers  in  environments.  In  two  workshops,  around  100  ideas  on  how  a  system  that  could  satisfy  these  needs  was  generated  in  a  number  of brainstorming sessions. These ideas were then culled   with   various   evaluation   methods   such   as  rating  matrixes,  inventory  methods  and  by  clustering the ideas. At the end of the evaluation process,  four  concepts  remained  with  different  levels of technical demands and implementation requirements.  The  decision  of  which  concept  that was going to be further developed was then made by Midbec. The final system is a service that allows customer to   visualize   chosen   wallpapers   in   a   digital   environment.  The  system  contains  a  screen  with  a connected hand scanner that will be integrated in  Midbec’s  store  interior  and  QR-barcodes  that  is  applied  to  each  wallpaper.  When  a  barcode  is  decoded,  either  with  the  scanner  or  with  a  smartphone, the user connects to Midbec’s newly developed   online   wallpaper   tool   where   the   wallpaper can be seen in different environments. The   benchmarking   showed   that   no   studies   of    effective    wallpaper    displays    has    been    made.  Several  areas  where  new  systems  can  be   implemented   to   support   customers   and   promote  wallpapers  more  effectively  was  found  throughout  the  process.  This  means  that  there  are many possibilities to develop and implement new  designs  in  the  industry.  As  a  conclusion,  this  project  showed  that  a  needfinding  process  should  focus  on  incorporating  the  user  to  the  highest possible level to ensure that reliable data is collected. Another conclusion is that customers experience   many   different   issues   in   today’s   wallpaper  selection  process.  Again,  this  shows  that  there  is  potential  to  develop  systems  that  can improve today’s wallpaper industry.

Abstract:
The history of consumption in the long eighteenth century has attracted much academic interest in recent decades. We now know much more about how an increasing number of consumer goods became available to growing numbers of the elite and middling classes. Yet there are still gaps in our knowledge about how these goods were produced, marketed, distributed and consumed. This case study of the luxury goods trade in English wallpaper provides a more detailed contribution to this debate and explores how issues of supply and demand intersected. Similarly, historiographies of wallpaper have also acknowledged that the market for this product came within the reach of the middle classes in this period, but we still need to know how, where, and in what way this was possible. Furthermore, although wallpaper manufacture at this time was essentially a London luxury goods trade, a significant regional industry did develop concurrently, which has previously been unexplored. Yet recognition of the impact of urbanisation in this period is essential to our understanding of the success of consumer goods at this time and the effect on people's cultural and material lives in the provinces as well as in London. This thesis draws on previously unused primary material from insurance and probate sources, government archives and newspaper advertisements to examine these issues in further detail. As a business history it also engages directly with the aesthetics of the material goods involved. The aim is to provide a more nuanced case study contribution to consumer, cultural and social histories and also to provide a contextual basis from which research into the material object - the historic wallpapers themselves - can be more fully undertaken.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper will attempt to analyze how similar forms of power play are manifested towards the protagonists in both The Bell Jar and “The Yellow Wallpaper”. The aim of the essay is to investigate how power play affects the protagonists’ relations with their caregivers and how it affects their treatments. Thus, the hypothesis is that it is the power play that prevents the protagonists in “The Yellow Wallpaper” and The Bell Jar from recovering from their mental illness, which is confirmed by my analysis. Therefore, the concept of power play will be used in the essay as an instrument of analysis. The hypothesis will be discussed from five main points: obstacles to recovery, caregivers’ role in recovery, patients’ response to treatment, the role of power play, and the negative impact which power play has on recovery. Keywords: Power play, mental illness, treatment, recovery, patient-caregiver relationship, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Sylvia Plath, Reet Sjögren.

Abstract:

The wallpaper company Duro Sweden AB, one of the most important Scandinavian

wallpaper manufacturers, wants to decrease its energy use and costs and make its

production more environmentally friendly. It implies changes in the key process energy

use whom consists mainly by drying process using heat production from oil.

The purpose of this project, studied by the consulting company Sweco Theorells AB,

is to determine the feasibility of a change in the energy utilisation implemented to the

most representative process to propose future solutions’ basis on the future energy

question.

The company use mainly two kind of energy, electricity with 1055MWh per year and

oil with 1985MWh per year. The oil power consumption and cost represent respectively

65% and 73% of the global part.

Several proposed changes with better energy efficiency are presented : use of district

heating as a heat source, Infrared Drying, combination, etc; but due to the important

rebate make by the Swedish government on the oil price, they are not currently viable to

achieve.

But the constant rise of the oil price could be sooner a strong incentive to make these

improvals, strongly environmentaly friendly and power consumption reducer,

economicaly viable in the long term.

Trigoni, Mirsini. "Home visions : representations of interior space in Wallpaper, Elle Decoration and Ideal Home magazines." Thesis, University of East London, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.532898.

Abstract:
This study explores how creative practitioners work and how interior spaces can be differently represented across magazines of different backgrounds and target readerships. This study produces an analysis of the style and character of the published representations of interior spaces. It explores the modes carefully selected by practitioners in order to construct visual texts - to successfully address their distinctive target readerships. As part of this analysis, and as a central element of the work, the thesis develops a way of looking at images. This study develops and demonstrates a method based on content analysis and presents a detailed coding form and protocol, for the detailed analysis of visual texts. This research produces an analytical tool to capture the atmosphere and dynamic of the image and the variations of interior space, rather than just the content of the image as content analysis normally does. This study draws on material from comparative analysis of three contemporary magazines (Wallpaper, Elle Decoration and Ideal Home) during the years 1997-2006. In order to explore the visual texts of these magazines I chose to combine quantitative and qualitative methods. From quantitative methods I selected content analysis and developed it in so far as to explore in depth the texts of the magazines. From qualitative methods I selected fieldwork observations collected in four London-based home magazines' editorial offices, and selective elements from diverse fields such as semiotics and visual theories, sociology, anthropology, advertising and media studies. This research suggests that magazines promote different representations of interior spaces depending on their background and target readership. Features aiming at an elite, very upmarket readership adopt an aesthetic approach and produce minimal, unrealistic and design-focused spaces, often with an entertaining or surreal twist; however, frequently these depictions look lifeless and self-centred. As we move towards more downmarket readerships, the representations of interior spaces become more realistic, practical and informative and less experimental; these spaces are lively, warm and human and often appeal to their readers' senses, memories and emotions; these are spaces that are designed to promote, cultivate and celebrate human relationships. 2

Hood, Rebekah Michele. "Invisible Voices: Revising Feminist Approaches to Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Including the Narrative of Mental Illness." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2017. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6678.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1973, the year in which Elaine Hedges's groundbreaking edition of "The Yellow Wallpaper" was published, Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story has been read primarily as one of America's leading feminist texts. With potent symbolism and a fragmented style of narration, it is easy to understand why many feminist scholars fashion the story's narrator into a proactive feminist, a courageous heroine who rebels against patriarchal oppression. While this trend of interpretation compellingly attempts to empower the narrator, it often overlooks her perspective of disability and projects the characteristics of a nondisabled, high-functioning feminist on a mentally ill woman. This paper reads Gilman's short story as a narrative of mental illness and applies the research of feminist disability scholars Anita Silvers, Jenny Morris, and Susan Wendell to a close reading of the story. Approaching the story from this perspective, we can identify the systems of oppression that disable the narrator and read "The Yellow Wallpaper" in a way that validates the subjective reality of depression and invites disabled voices into feminism's exploration of womanhood.

Abstract:
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by many fungal species. Health effects induced by the ingestion of these substances are well documented and some mycotoxins are now regulated for their maximum tolerable levels in foods. However, other routes of exposure to these contaminants are possible. Thus, if irritating or allergenic reactions related to the inhalation of fungal spores or mycelial fragments have been demonstrated, inhalation of mycotoxins is also suspected to be causing certain respiratory disorders or certain pathologies. Indeed, mycotoxins can be found in spores but also on finer particles which are easily aerosolized and therefore likely to be inhaled. However, data on the hazard associated with human exposure to mycotoxins by inhalation are still very fragmented. In this context, our main objective was to characterize the aerosolization of mycotoxins during the colonization of different materials encountered in indoor environments by toxinogenic molds. First we studied growth and production of mycotoxins during the colonization of building materials (wallpaper, painted fiberglass wallpaper, vinyl wallpaper, fir, fiberglass) by three fungal species of interest: Aspergillus versicolor, Penicillium brevicompactum, Stachybotrys chartarum. These species were chosen because of their frequent presence in indoor environments and their diverse mycelial organization. In addition, these three species produce different toxins: sterigmatocystin, mycophenolic acid and macrocyclic trichothecenes for A. versicolor, P. brevicompactum and S. chartarum, respectively. These studies have shown that, during their development on tested materials, three species produce mycotoxins. The most favorable material for fungal development and toxinogenesis is wallpaper. Mycophenolic acid, sterigmatocystin and macrocyclic trichothecenes can thus be produced at levels of 1.8, 112.1 and 27.8 mg/m2, respectively, on this material. These toxins can then be partially aerosolized. We have shown that aerosolization depends on species and their mycelial structure, but also on culture conditions and airflow. This transfer to air is nevertheless observed after aeraulic solicitations which can be easily encountered in indoor environments because theycorrespond to the movement of people in a room (0.3 m/s), speed of air in ceiling diffusers (2 m/s), slamming doors or air drafts when opening windows(6 m/s). P. brevicompactum showed to be the easiest to aerosolize. The major part of the aerosols’ toxic charge is found in particles whose size corresponds to that of spores or mycelial fragments. However, for macrocyclic trichothecenes, toxins were also found in particles smaller than spores, which could easily be inhaled by occupants and penetrate deep into the respiratory tract. In order to better characterize the actual hazard associated with inhalation of these compounds, cytotoxicity studies have been performed using lung cells and comparing with results observed on digestive cells. Pulmonary toxicity is comparable to that observed in digestive cells. Macrocyclic trichothecenes are much more toxic than other tested toxins with IC50 in order of ng/ml. In parallel, we analyzed the VOCs specifically produced during active mycotoxinogenesis in order to identify potential biomarkers of the actual production of mycotoxins that could be used as tools for monitoring of indoor environments. Unfortunately, this approach has not, for the moment, led to the identification of specific targets. In the end, we evaluated the persistence of these contaminants during application of bleach, the most frequently used decontamination process. We have shown that a normal cleaning procedure allows only partial removal of mold.

Wall-Couture is a project within the textile design field, which aims to explore methods for surface design in digitally printed wallpaper. Through a practice based working method, textile after-treatment techniques have been used to manipulate digitally printed wallpaper with hand-painted motives. Practices borrowed from haute couture have influenced the working method. The result is a range of design examples displaying various expressions of the techniques. The project shows that several surface materials could be applied in ways that enhance tactility and visual depth to digitally printed wallpaper, and also that methods from craftsmanship could be use to design contemporary wallpaper. The combination of techniques increases the designer’s opportunities to design wallpaper by using alternative approaches to material and surfaces. The work also strives to higher the value of handicraft, decoration and ornamentation in the design field. Another value is to strengthen the position of digital printing in the textile industry; the work encourages technical progress for creating digital print in combination with surface treatments.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates a typology of interiors that evoke the sensation of containing the whole world in miniature. It explores the reverie of something being able to expand as you go deeper; that is, something which seems like it is a complete world, or appears larger than it is. It is about making a space for the mind to rest in, and as it rests, go deeper and thus reach outside of the walls of the space. In a way, it might be about achieving complexity and great depth through small means. The questions that this thesis poses are the following: What kind of spatial reality is being miniaturized? How can something small be large, something flat be deep, somethings imple be complex? How can a whole be greater than its parts? What are the appropriate means of representation for these types of interiors? As a side effect, I think this investigation is ultimately also about the pure joy of creating, and about genuine warmth, empathy, atmosphere, and an inclusive sense of humour, which allows for quirks and flights of fancy.

Abstract:
Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Zelda Fitzgerald provide unique insight into the patriarchal worlds they lived in through autobiographical accounts of their lives. The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the diaries of Gilman and her first husband, Charles Walter Stetson, serve as Gilman’s autobiographical texts of the period before, during, and immediately after her breakdown. The correspondence between Fitzgerald and her husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald, as well as Scott’s letters to Zelda’s psychiatrists serve as a biographical (and, in the case of her letters to Scott, autobiographical) account of her life during the period of her institutionalizations, from 1930 up to Scott’s death in 1940. These biographies and autobiographies, studied in conjunction with their fictionalized autobiographical accounts, Gilman’s “The Yellow Wall-Paper” and Fitzgerald’s Save Me The Waltz, illustrate the struggles these women, and by extension, many women of their time, experienced when they were unable to live up to the expectations a patriarchal society placed on them to be perfect wives and mothers. The construction of the feminine by the patriarchy required women to be complacent, meek, dependent, and infantile, and this construction, complicated by the issues of institutionalization and hysteria, is at the heart of the works of Gilman and Fitzgerald. The subtexts present in their fiction demonstrate that Gilman and Fitzgerald not only understood and felt the pressure of the patriarchal construction of femininity, but were acutely aware of how it could exert itself on women, particularly white, economically privileged women. Both authors, victims of the same patriarchal mechanism that dominated society during the turn of the twentieth century, provide insight into their own perspectives through their autobiographies, and then create fictional worlds in which the implications of these perspectives are realized to the detriment of their protagonists. While critics have examined this focus within individual stories by these writers, they have not been examined together in a comprehensive discussion of the patriarchal construction of the feminine and its manifestation in the autobiographical/biographical and fictional works of Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Zelda Fitzgerald.

Daydreams is a wallpaper collection consisting of three images that combines the modern, mass-produced digital printing techniques with traditional, unique needlework. By applying embroidery – with its structure and fabric texture – to a digitally printed wallpaper material, a collection is created that lingers on the borders between art and design, luxury and modesty as well as dream and reality.

Abstract:
This work is a proposal for an alternative approach to working with print, making the printing process a key element within designing. It is an investigation into flat garment construction between fabric layers, as this enables for the printing to be used in place of sewing. Additionally, working with multiple textile layers connects with the reference of the peeling wallpaper, which is used as a base for material and form developments. The aim of the work is to develop a more holistic approach and new expressions in garment-making in relation to the application of printing processes within textile layers. The main objective is to present a new perspective of the relationship between garment pattern and print, bringing the later forward. Not only does the surface print, through the interaction of colour and texture provide an important element in terms of creating expression, but it additionally acts as a construction element. Moreover, by using the process of printing to create form the element of print becomes integrated into the process of garment-making.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to examine how people living in the Swedish countryside looked upon changes in the interiors through modernization in 1850-90. For the first time, there was an abundance of objects available in stores in the countryside that the majority of the population had money buy. Many novelties were introduced in the interior decoration of ordinary peoples´ homes. This study focuses on the introduction and use of wallpaper and is based on a questionnaire about wallpaper sent from the Nordiska museet, National museum of Culture history in Sweden, to people all over Sweden in 1948. 148 people responded to the questions about use and attitudes toward wallpaper during the second half of the 19th century. My theoretical perspective is cultural diffusion, the spread of cultural items, more specific the diffusion of innovations from larger to smaller places, often influenced by social elites, hierarchical diffusion, and between individuals, contagious diffusion. The analytical perspective used for the analysis is based on the concepts of basic and variable modernity, initiated by the historian Sven-Eric Liedman. Basic modernity describes the structural modernization in society as a whole within the fields of economy, technology and natural sciences. The variable modernity represents the different attitudes, likes and dislikes, opinions, viewpoints and cultural differences every individual possesses, the attitudes that decide how and if the modernity is received in each household. My intent has been to ascertain the factors that made production and distribution of relatively cheap wallpaper all over Sweden possible, pinpoint the most important driving forces for creating an interest in wallpaper within the villages, discover how wallpaper was introduced in the individual homes of farmers and how wallpaper was received. The use of wallpaper in the interiors has been examined in order to find out if, and how the modernization affected and was affected by the way people were living their lives within the home.

O'Reilly, Casey Michelle. "Phantom Limb: An Exploration of Queer Manner in Nineteenth-Century Gothic Tales." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2019. https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/1069.

Full text
Abstract:
The term “phantom limb” is used to describe the phenomenal tingling sensation that occurs in the nerve endings of an amputated limb; though the limb is no longer physically attached to the body, the person experiences pain and physical sensation in the space the limb once occupied. Though the body part has been removed, it haunts both the body and the brain. It is through this metaphor that I am interested in investigating the connection between the disembodied and the embodied. The disembodied connects to the embodied through the loss or lack of a bodily form; the embodied, therefore, links the disembodied to movements and mannerisms of the body. Adopting Pierre Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice, I define manner as a fluctuating force that operates as a spectrum. Manner links, rather than separates, the internal and the external through the social. In other words, the interplay between the internal and external must be socially interpreted in order to be understood as manner. The first chapter of my thesis will focus on embodied manner and use Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as a case study to explain how society impacts the construction of normative manner. Building off Jack Halberstam, I adopt the theory that Mr. Hyde “is both a sexual secret, the secret of Jekyll’s undignified desires, and a visible representation of physical otherness” (82). My argument focuses on the connection between the “deformity hidden within” Mr. Hyde and that “inscribed upon his...skin” that Utterson, Enfield and Lanyon struggle to identify (82). The second chapter of my thesis will focus on how manner operates as both a disciplinary force and cultural haunting. In other words, just as the phantom limb reproduces a distorted version of the lost limb, the social control of manner ultimately reproduces imperfect replicas. In George Eliot’s The Lifted Veil, the protagonist, Latimer, begins suffering from visions after he parts ways with his dear friend Charles Meunier. Here, the unconscious operates at the individual level; I argue that these “visions” are the result of an implosion of Latimer’s repressed sexuality. I then turn to Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper to argue that manner operates as a type of social law that attempts to stave off haunting but instead inadvertently reproduces it. In this section, I argue that the narrator’s secondary status as a female character gives her a different kind of agency from Mr. Hyde and Latimer, and that her husband’s ultimate failure to control her results in a type of queer production that calls into question the dialectical relationship between haunting and manner.

The present research aims to analyze the process of discursive constitution of the narrator- character subjectivity of the tale The Yellow Wall Paper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The tale tells the story of a woman cloistered in a colonial mansion by her husband, who is a doctor, because of her supposed propensity for hysteria. In the seclusion, she notices other women stuck to the wallpaper of the room in which she is staying. By this movement, she writes in a diary to deal with her anxieties, yearnings and feelings, while deciphering the pattern of the yellow wallpaper. It is a literary corpus and through it we understand that historical and social practices produce the subjectivity of the narrator-character. We base ourselves on Discourse Analysis as descriptive-interpretative and analytical support, based mainly on the following foucaultian notions: knowledge/power relations, objectivation/ subjectivation and freedom practices, madness, self-care, self-writing, resistance, desubjectivation. The study is structured in three chapters: in the first, we present the story and its author, gather academic research about the story, point out some elements of the fantastic literature observed in it; in the second, we discuss the theoretical-methodological framework, analyze knowledge/power relations in the constitution of the madness in the story; in the third, we explore freedom and self-care practices employed by the narrator-character, evidencing processes of desubjectivation that deprive her identity and place her before new possibilities of existence. Therefore, in this process of Foucault's discursive analysis, we reflect about the subject- positions assumed by the narrator-character, the discursive practices in which it inserts itself and is inserted, the effects of knowledge/power incident on its (dis)constitution as subject and the ruptures of patterns and roles imposed. We understand that the subjects constitute themselves and are constituted in and by the discourses of a given historical and social conjuncture, in addition to breaking with the imposed standards, the subjects transgress social norms, resist knowledge/power relations and, when desubjecting themselves from the standard model imposed upon them, they produce new subjectivities, reinvent themselves into something which is yet to come. This was the movement of resistance built by the narrator-character, the protagonist of the narrative under study.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Due to advances in computer technology, large image collections have been digitised and archived in computers. Image management systems are therefore developed to retrieve relevant images. Because of the limitations of text-based image retrieval systems, Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems have been developed. A CBIR system usually extracts global or local contents of colour, shape and texture from an image to form a feature vector that is used to index the image. Plethora methods have been developed to extract these features, however, there is very little in the literature to study the closeness of each method to human perception. This research aims to develop a human perception oriented content-based image retrieval system for the Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture (MoDA) wallpaper images. Since texture has been widely regarded as the main feature for these images and applied in CBIR systems, psychophysical experiments were conducted to study the way human perceive texture and to evaluate five popular computational models for texture representations: Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrices (GLCM), Multi-Resolution Simultaneous Auto-Regressive (MRSAR) model, Fourier Transform (FT), Wavelet Transform (WT) and Gabor Transform (GT). By analyzing experimental results, it was found that people consider directionality and regularity to be more important in terms of texture than coarseness. Unexpectedly, none of the five models appeared to represent human perception of texture very well. It was therefore concluded that classification is needed before retrieval in order to improve retrieval performance and a new classification algorithm based on directionality and regularity for wallpaper images was developed. The experimental result showed that the evaluation algorithm worked effectively and the evaluation experiments confirmed the necessity of the classification step in the development of CBIR system for MoDA collections.

This thesis details the literary and visual influences in my work, the definition of American Gothic, and its connection it to my work. Literary sources such as Edgar Allan Poe and Fanny Kemble help spark a vision of the landscape. Visual influences include Japanese woodblock prints, scenic wallpapers, vintage postcards and Victorian mourning pictures. My regional explorations span the James River, Tidewater swamps and architecture within the city of Richmond. My work depicts local history and ecology inspired by Richmond and the surrounding region. Subtle Gothic elements add anxiety to the otherwise pastoral scenes. Gothic foreboding in the work questions our ecological future and the permanence of our human presence in the landscape.

Abstract:
[EN] Currently we handle a lot of visual information. We see, create and use many images in our diary lives and work. Analysis techniques based on low level features are, in many cases, little descriptive or representative for the human user. This is partly because they are highly dependent on the conditions of acquisition of each image and also, due to the difficulty of matching the content of the image with a high number of numeric values that describe very small details of the image. In the way of approximating the computational process to describe the image content to the human way of reasoning, current trends are aimed at the construction of descriptions that involve the use of more complex concepts. These abstractions are achieved by building more elaborate descriptions assume the variability (and tolerances) with which humans make the decisions when it comes to describe the visual content of images. This thesis addresses the use of symmetry and uses the combinations of symmetries presents in an image for description based on symmetry patterns rather than pixels patterns (textures). The problem of image description in these contexts can be viewed as a classification, because of its relationship to plane group theory (WallPaper Group Theory) also called mosaic or tessellation groups, is formulated as the determination of symmetry group an image belongs to. The number of these groups is finite (there are only seventeen in 2D) and are described by a set of internal symmetries with respect to a basic element that encapsulates the entire contents of the design. If we can determine the existence of repetitive content in a picture, we get a pattern for describing the image in terms of an area that is repeated indefinitely in the plane (no gaps, nor overlaps), in discrete steps obtained from the two directions of translational symmetry that defines the grid. Under this formulation, the image content can be expressed from a minimum elemental form, which contains no internal symmetry.

Abstract:
During the twenty first century the enthusiasm among the general public the turn of the century 1900’s kitchen has increased in Sweden. Since around 2010 media is overflowing of imagery that cater to and perhaps even with an intention to further stimulate interest in the century 1900’s kitchens. The wallcovering plays a huge part in achieving that estetic. With the increase of serious interest in properly reconstructing and rebuilding these kinds of spaces the scientifically based conservation is vital. But how accurate is the public picture of the turn of the century 1900’s kitchen? How accurate is even the more academically recognized image of the kitchen in Sweden between 1890 to 1920? With this thesis, my intention is to expand the view and knowledge regarding wall coverings in the private kitchens in Sweden between 1890 - 1920. Also to increase underlying information to proper conservation for buildings. The knowledge in both private and state funded conservation in this aspect is, according to findings during the course of writing this thesis, is lacking due to the spars scholar level interest in this subject. This bachelor thesis purpose is to contribute to the advancement of scientifically based knowledge of the private kitchen wallcovering between 1890-1920 in Sweden and compare the popularized image of the kitchen wallcovering, with the result from my study. With different types of archive material, both figurative and written, this bachelor thesis aim at broadening the popularized image of the wallcovering in Sweden's home kitchens between the years 1890-1920. Iconology/iconography, conservation, pop culture and feminist theories have been considered when making this thesis. One among several findings, as presented in this thesis, is that the popularized image of wall covers in home kitchens in Sweden between the years of 1890-1920 differs significantly from their usual appearance.

Abstract:
The electromagnetic smog in which we live today is nowadays a real issue because it limits the use of certain technologies and also because there are some potential health risks associated with it, even if the latter is still a controversial subject. The importance of the interferences between wireless networks or the possibility of data hacking on the same networks are two examples. The aim of this thesis is to develop a new way to protect buildings against some of these electromagnetic waves. More specifically, this work focuses on a technology able to filter only the WiFi and the GSM waves through large areas of a home, like a wall for example. To do this, the functionalization of a standard component of buildings, the wallpaper, was studied. The use of frequency selective surface (FSS) was chosen. These patterns are printed directly on paper with a conductive ink printing technology: the flexography. The study also focuses on the realization of innovative filter designs. Simulation results show that these novel FSS are able to filter two or three bands. They are almost insensitive to the polarization and to the angle of incidence in the range of 0° to ±80°. The realization feasibility of this concept in a laboratory or in industrial conditions was demonstrated. Next, an experimental demonstration of this concept in the WiFi bands was carried out. In this context, the transmission coefficient was reached -30 dB. Finally, an experimental validation of the product in real conditions of use was conducted, namely the wallpaper was put over plasterboards or over wood panels. Also, the influence of the glue on the general performances and the placement of a decorative wallpaper over the FSS wallpaper were studied. In conclusion, the practical results obtained confirm and validate the theoretical predictions of this new concept, called metapaper, and show that the practical realizations are efficient enough to allow the reduction of WiFi or GSM signals

Full text
Abstract:
All his life Louis Lafitte (1770-1828) insisted on introducing himself, with pride, as a history painter, a statement which his artistic training fully justified. After an apprenticeship with the engraver Gilles-Antoine Demarteau, he was the pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault, a competitor and rival of Jacques Louis David's in the 1780s. Introduced by his master, he was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1784; his studies there were honourable: first medal in October 1788, and above all the grand prize in painting, when he first took part in the competition in 1791. This course of excellence earned him a place at the Académie de France in Rome, but he could hardly take advantage of this privilege, as the political situation in France was not acceptable to the Roman authorities. The population could not stand the French presence and in January 1793, it was mayhem; the Mancini Palace, the seat of the Academy, was burnt down and the residents dispersed. All of them returned to France more or less quickly; some, like Lafitte, took refuge in Florence until the neutrality of Tuscany was ruptured in October 1793. On his return to France, a period of uncertainty began: an official resident of the Republic until September 1800, he received modest compensation. His desire to return to Rome was unfulfilled as was his aspiration to become a history painter, as he was unable to obtain a studio, despite repeated requests. Nor did he enter the cenacle of artists regularly solicited by successive governments, but he sometimes gave timid signs of assent to the regime in power, from the year II to the Empire, where he received more important official commissions, such as the simulacrum of the Arc de Triomphe de L'Etoile for the wedding of Napoleon and Marie-Louise. His enthusiastic rallying to the Restoration undoubtedly shows the true face of Lafitte's political affinity. The result was a very official position as draughtsman in the King's Cabinet, which concluded his artistic career which is often difficult to reconstruct. For most of his life, he was not in the limelight, lacking public clients, he very quickly turned to a private clientele, which he obtained by using his title of a history painter. He was mainly asked to paint works in line with the tastes of the time, Pompeian interior decorations, or portraits, which we have little trace of today. A skilled draughtsman, he worked for print engravers, producing famous pieces such as figures from the republican calendar, but also for publishers of refined illustrated editions, very appreciated by the readers of the time. One thinks, in particular, of the luxurious Didot edition of Paul and Virginie, directed from beginning to end by Bernardin de Saint Pierre himself. In the publishing field, he earned such a reputation that he remained a book illustrator for a large number of 19th-century authors. He was also interested in the applied arts and provided drawings for both the goldsmiths and wallpaper trade. These were luxury objects, produced in small numbers but mechanically manufactured. As an artist, Louis Lafitte accepted the demands of consumer society, his eclectic career showed his constant ability to adapt during the revolution and although he is not remembered as a history painter, he succeeded in making a living from his trade

Within the improvement of communication technology, global trading is increasingly competitive. Take wallpaper industry as an example, Taiwan market is broken in by China’s dumping policy. All sectors are re-build their structures comprehensively to react from external competition. From the view of “Factory”, the main functions are production and shipment which involving departments of production, warehouse and operation. Production consists of process, manpower staffing, equipment...etc; warehouse includes storage arrangement, replenishment and dispatch; operation focus on the sales function. This is a research of TPM activity to M company in wallpaper industry, aimed to improve its production management and warehouse management. This research modifies 5S principle of TPM to analyze current situation of company M. It suggests an improvement program regarding to production process and manpower allocation within department of production. In the meantime, it also analyzes the effectiveness of execution in time manner and regarding to warehouse, it increases efficiency and accuracy by rearranging the storage, refine the pick-up process and introducing the barcode system. Finally, we implement the “8 Activities” and measure the effect by “the 6 Pillars”. It is expected to enhance the competitiveness of enterprises by introducing TPM and to make contribution to the local business.

In this study we proposed to investigate the possibility of a screen to be merged into a wall, serving as ornamentation of the house. Based on a practice widely used by most users, as access to any content through haptic technology, we recognise that, slowly, we are progressively engaged into the digital world. Therefore, we understand that we can direct interfaces to another field (beyond receiving messages, calls or browsing the internet), using them in a context of décor for our home. We can, thus, customize our room wallpaper with the projection of a static, or dynamic, image, enhancing the freedom and creativity in the decoration of the interior spaces. This was why we chose to analyse the evolution of the screen, the contexts in which it is used and the user’s behaviour with this support. We tried to comprehend whether this digital scenario could have an impact on society, by studying several technological means, which already provide this Virtual Reality. In parallel, we use the interfaces of science fiction films to assist us in the visual explanation of the theme here proposed.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an effective technique for interference control with the use of frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) in indoor wireless environments. An FSS with a bandstop frequency response was applied to an existing wall as a wallpaper to transform the wall into a frequency- selective (FS) wall. The FS-Wall can be made to deliberately filter out undesired interference, and accordingly improve wireless system performance. In-situ measurements have shown that the FS-Wall prototype can attenuate 5.3GHz{5.8GHz (IEEE802.11a) transmissions by 15dB in addition to the unmodified wall attenuation, whereas other radio services, such as cellular telephony at 1.8GHz, experience only little attenuation. The FS-Wall created performed consistently (with acceptable attenuation levels) with varying signal incident angles from 0± to 56±. The 15dB reduction in signal strength is considered sufficient to isolate a system from external interference, and could potentially improve a WLAN system throughput by 2.2 times. The FSS performance has been examined intensely by both equivalent circuit modelling and practical measurements. Factors that influence FSS performance such as the FSS element dimensions, element conductivities, dielectric substrates adjacent to the FSS, and signal incident angles were investigated. By keeping the elements small and densely packed, a largely angle- insensitive FSS was developed as a promising prototype for FS-wallpaper. Such an FS-wallpaper can be applied directly to the wall (with no intervening spacing) with insignificant mutual interaction between the FSS and the wall. Accordingly, the resultant FS-Wall can be modelled by cascading the effects of the FS-wallpaper and the wall. Good agreement between the modelled and the measured results was observed, which suggests that the equivalent circuit model can be used confidently to assist FSS design. Fabrication techniques and practical installation issues associated with the development of FSS for indoor wireless applications were also investigated in this thesis. With the use of an angle-insensitive bandstop FSS, this research has demonstrated a feasible solution for mitigating external interference into indoor wireless systems. This research work has linked the fields of antenna design, communication systems and building architecture.
