Abstract:
Even though Charlotte Perkins Gilman's story ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ (1892) has received a lot of critical attention, there have been only a few attempts at the visual analysis of the wallpaper. This article approaches it as a case of the intricate pattern – an optically unpleasant and complicated ornament that can be depicted. This motif is present in gothic narratives (Poe's ‘Ligeia’, 1838), films (Robert Wise's The Haunting, 1963) as well as outside the genre. With a connection to wallpapers, it was discussed publicly during Gilman's time. This article reconstructs this discussion with examples from the contemporary interior decoration manuals, guidebooks for nursing and medical literature. The aim is to contextualize Gilman's story and to analyse the ways in which her descriptions of the wallpaper are similar to the rhetoric of the guidebooks. This context can enrich our knowledge about the period, reception of the story and possibly even about Gilman's sources of inspiration.

Abstract:
Symmetries are abundant within the visual environment, and many animals species are sensitive to visual symmetries. Wallpaper groups constitute a class of 17 regular textures that each contain a distinct combination of the four fundamental symmetries, translation, reflection, rotation and glide reflection, and together represent the complete set of possible symmetries in two-dimensional images. Wallpapers are visually compelling and elicit responses in visual brain areas that precisely capture the symmetry content of each group in humans and other primates. Here we ask to what extent different exemplars from the same wallpaper group are perceptually similar. We used an algorithm to produce a set of well-matched exemplars from 5 of the 17 wallpaper groups and instructed participants to freely sort the exemplars from each group into as many subsets as they wished based on any criteria they saw appropriate. P1, the simplest of the 17 groups, was consistently rated more self-similar than any other group, while the other four groups, although varying in symmetry content, were comparable in self-similarity. Our results suggest that except for the most extreme case (P1), perceived self-similarity of wallpaper groups is not directly tied to categories of symmetry based on group theory.

Abstract:
During a fire, flames can quickly spread throughout the room because the wallpaper covers the entire surface. Smoke generated from fire is a significant obstacle to evacuation. Therefore, it is essential to study the smoke characteristics of the wallpaper to ensure evacuation safety. This study used the ISO 5659-2 combustion chamber method to measure the smoke density over time with and without flame conditions using a 25 kW/m2 radiation heat flux. The extinction coefficient represents the visibility in the smoke, and VOF4 shows the initial combustion smoke density characteristics. These two factors were derived from experiment results. Paper, cork, and cotton wallpapers were used as representative wallpapers. The results show that the maximum smoke density of all wallpapers was higher in the non-flame condition than in the flame condition. Under the flame condition, the maximum smoke density was measured in the order of cork, cotton, and paper. In the non-flame condition, the order was cotton, cork, and paper with the maximum smoke density. The extinction coefficient of wallpapers, except paper, exceeded 1.0 m-1 in the flame condition, indicating that the smoke density provides visibility of 1-2 m under fire.

Abstract:
George Eliot lamented the decoration of her and George Henry Lewes's house, for which Owen Jones, the man behind the color scheme for the Crystal Palace, designed wallpaper and chose draperies. At the beginning of his chapter on Middlemarch in Novels Behind Glass, a detailed historicist study of Thackeray, Gaskell, Dickens, Eliot and the Great Exhibition, Andrew Miller quotes Eliot's lament: “Such fringing [sic] away of precious life in thinking of carpets and tables is an affliction to me and seems like a nightmare from which I shall find it bliss to awake into my old world of care for things quite apart from upholstery” (189). In the Afterword, Miller quotes the deathbed words of Oscar Wilde, whose earnestness about his own wallpapered predicament are quite in contrast with Eliot: “My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death…. One or the other of us has to go” (221).

Although the constructed mappings have simple form and only two parameters, combined with the color scheme of orbit trap algorithm, such mappings can create a great variety of aesthetic wallpaper patterns. The resulting wallpaper patterns are further projected by central projection onto the sphere. This creates the interesting spherical patterns that possess infinite symmetries in a finite space.

Abstract:
Kirigami, the art of paper cutting, has become a paradigm for mechanical metamaterials in recent years. The basic building blocks of any kirigami structures are repetitive deployable patterns that derive inspiration from geometric art forms and simple planar tilings. Here, we complement these approaches by directly linking kirigami patterns to the symmetry associated with the set of 17 repeating patterns that fully characterize the space of periodic tilings of the plane. We start by showing how to construct deployable kirigami patterns using any of the wallpaper groups, and then design symmetry-preserving cut patterns to achieve arbitrary size changes via deployment. We further prove that different symmetry changes can be achieved by controlling the shape and connectivity of the tiles and connect these results to the underlying kirigami-based lattice structures. All together, our work provides a systematic approach for creating a broad range of kirigami-based deployable structures with any prescribed size and symmetry properties.

In this study, a wallpaper with fire-extinguishing properties was developed. This wallpaper is expected to increase the evacuation time and suppress the spread of flames in case of fire. It was confirmed that the fire-extinguishing time of an ordinary wallpaper can be increased from 2 to 5 min by incorporating micro-extinguishing capsules in the general water pool. After attaching microfire-extinguishing capsules in the form of a film on the back of the wallpaper, a burning test using a torch and 45° flame retardant digestion was performed, and the thermal properties of the adhesive film were verified based on the reaction start temperature, peak point, reaction end temperature, and weight reduction rate through thermogravimetric analysis.

Abstract:
The beauty of Istiqlal Mosque is reflected through its architectural design. The decorative arts that adorn this mosque are generally found in elements such as doors, windows, walls, gates, and vents, which show special patterns. Such patterns can be identified through the concept of geometric symmetry, specifically Frieze Patterns and Wallpaper Patterns. The Frieze pattern is a subgroup within a symmetry group formed through one-way translation, creating a linear pattern that repeats in one direction. There are seven types of frieze patterns, each formed through a combination of specific isometries. Along with that, there are also other geometric patterns known as wallpaper patterns. Wallpaper patterns analyze patterns based on transformations on a flat plane and have seventeen types. This study aims to explore and explain geometric patterns based on Frieze Patterns and Wallpaper Patterns contained in the decorative arts of Istiqlal Mosque. Data collection methods involve observation and documentation. The results showed that there are certain frieze patterns in the Istiqlal Mosque, such as the type . Meanwhile, the wallpaper patterns identified in the design of the Istiqlal Mosque are type pmm and pmg. It is important to note that not all designs in the decorative arts of Istiqlal Mosque can be categorized into seven frieze patterns as well as seventeen wallpaper patterns.

Abstract:
Good indoor environmental quality (IEQ) is desired for a healthy indoor environment. The microbial growth in indoor environments contribute into poor indoor environmental quality can cause various of health problems. Antimicrobial coatings are designed to generate a surface that is easy to clean and can also incorporate active agents, commonly called biocides, which prevent microbial colonization, the subsequent growth and bio-deterioration of the substrate. The aim for this study is to treat indoor environmental quality in buildings by reviewing the possible application of potassium sorbate used in food industry preservatives to be use as indoor antimicrobial. Plasterboard wall was used as a substrate to see the influence of different common wall finishing used such as paints and wallpapers on fungal growth. Potassium sorbate was tested against fungal isolated from affected room M146, FKAAS building. The total fungal counts in affected room was 806 cfu/m3. The ASTM D5590-00 standard was used to evalute fungal growth and potassium sorbate was effective to inhibit the amount of fungal growth on four common types of wall finishing used on plasterboard wall. As a result, the percentage reduction in growth between control and treatment sample were 10% on thin wallpaper, 15% on acrylic paint, 25% on glycerol-based paint and 60% on thick wallpaper.

Abstract:
Building fires can spread through surface combustion of both combustible and interior finishing materials. Recently, the use of foam blocks as interior materials for high-rise residential buildings has increased. However, as foam blocks are primarily composed of polyethylene, they are not flame-retardant and can readily burn and the fire can spread, leading to large-scale damage. Herein, the fire hazard and diffusion characteristics of foam blocks were compared with those of flame-retardant and general wallpapers to confirm the risk of fire. The fire risk of the foam blocks was confirmed using flammability, cone calorimetry, and spread-of-flame analyses. Based on a comparative analysis of the fire risk of foam blocks, the average total heat release was 11.2 MJ/m. This is approximately three times higher than the average heat release rate of the flame-retardant wallpaper and approximately two times higher than that of the general wallpaper. The foam blocks ignited rapidly owing to fire and generated large amounts of combustion gas and heat. To prevent such a fire, 5 wt% montmorillonite (MMT) was simply coated after surface modification to suppress the occurrence of fire. Various flame-retardant materials, surface modifications, and fire safety systems must be developed to prevent fire hazards.

The State Hermitage Museum houses a large collection of leather wallpapers. Various types of these wallpapers with silvering, embossing, decorated with coloured varnishes and paints were widespread in Western Europe from the 16th century to the 19th century. The complex technology of manufacturing of such wallpapers allowed for the creation of numerous diverse durable relief ornamental fabrics with imitation gilding. Two strips of wallpaper had to be brought to display condition before a temporary exhibition. The experience of restoring these items is interesting due to the methods used, traces of previous restorations discovered and interesting occurrences of deviation from traditional manufacturing techniques.

The types of images that we associate with kitchen wallpaper—what we now think of as “normal” or “usual” designs—tell us a lot about when it was developed in the early part of the 20th century, particularly the 1920s. Its iconography provides a key to understanding how kitchen design has evolved and how the user of the kitchen has been regarded over time. Binocular eye movements were measured in subjects experiencing the wallpaper illusion. It was found that a physical displacement of the fixation point by more than 1 m out of the plane of apparent localisation of the strips had no influence on the illusory location of these strips. Hence, illusory localisation in the wallpaper illusion is independent of the actual magnitude of the subject's convergence angle, once the illusion has come into existence. This result suggests that convergence does not serve as a source of information about apparent distance, at least in the wallpaper illusion.

Abstract: Art that was entirely or partially produced by an autonomous system is referred to as generative art. An autonomous system is typically a non-human entity that is capable of making judgments on its own about aspects of a piece of art that would otherwise require direct input from the artist. We have created a GUI which lists the applications which are based on the concept of generative art. Our GUI contains applications like random password generation, abstract artworks, map generation, wallpaper generation. Password generator will provide randomly generated passwords which would be derived from the images created using image generation algorithms/scripts such as EPWT and python’s in-built random function which uses algorithms like mersenne twister, a pseudo-random number generator. This application aims to provide usefulness for old hashing algorithms which are getting obsolete day by day. Abstract artwork generator will generate random images for stimulating creativity of artists, designers, architectural and marketing firms for getting started on a new project. This generator uses general complex functions which contain scripts for different shapes and combinations. This approach is able to generate some innovative solutions and demonstrates the power of computational approach. A layout of the area with the requested coordinates and different constraints will be provided through map generating model. Wallpaper generation model will generate aesthetically pleasing wallpapers with adjustable features.

This research used descriptive method. The primary data is Charlotte Perkin Gilman’s work or short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” published and printed in 1995 by Penguin books. The secondary data is reference, which has relation to do the topic of the research. Then, the data is collected and analyzed by using genetic structuralism approach which is focus of the analysis of intrinsic and extrinsic aspect. Extrinsic aspect involves Gilman’s biography as well as social contexts as reference to constitute certain ideology adopted by Gilman and Intrinsic aspect focused on plot, character and setting of “the yellow wallpaper.” The result shows that the homologous of Gilman’s ideology and “The Yellow wallpaper” is related to feminist ideology. Her social and personality background revealed that she is a feminist activist. Gilman propose how the women tries to free from patriarchy system is by using rational imagination. The main character of “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a woman; a new mother who suffer from post-partum depression. She is able to see that most of women are hide behind the domestic pattern. The result shows that a woman who got an oppression and subordination by patriarchy system tends to have mental disorder and depression.

Abstract:
This study attempts to put Charlotte Perkins Gilman‘s The yellow wallpaper in the context of contemporary theory of Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar’s psycho-feminist scholarship The Madwoman in the Attic: The Women Writers and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination (2000). The two critics focus on the image of the imprisoned mad women in the attic like Bertha Mason, the mentally ill wife of Mr. Edward Rochester, in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (1847). The image of the sick woman forced into domestic confinement of colors, shapes and wallpapers in an entire seclusion continued right into the twentieth century into the literary product of some of the women writers. According to Gilbert and Gubar, some of those women Victorian writers tried to give voice to those women descending into sickness and mental diseases throughout their endeavor to oppress their awareness of the inner creative power which comes as a part of their desire to accept the limited social role they are trapped in.

Abstract:
The technology of recycling of polymer-coated paper waste is described. Physical and chemical properties of fibers obtained from wallpaper wastes and from their derivative compositions were investigated. A special crusher with primary and secondary grinding stages and with a section for separating paper fibers from polymer coating was designed. Industrial trials of cellulose obtained from wallpaper wastes for the asbestos cement sheets manufacturing were held. Its impact on the quality and physical and mechanical properties of sheets was shown. Methods of thermogravimetry, microscopy, and differential thermal, infrared spectral and chemical analysis were applied to investigate cellulose fibers derived from recycled wallpaper. Their properties were compared to the ordinary cellulose and polyvinylacetate fibers, which are used in the production of asbestos cement sheets.

Abstract:
Materials whose gapless surface states are protected by crystal symmetries include mirror topological crystalline insulators and nonsymmorphic hourglass insulators. There exists only a very limited set of possible surface crystal symmetries, captured by the 17 “wallpaper groups.” Here we show that a consideration of symmetry-allowed band degeneracies in the wallpaper groups can be used to understand previously described topological crystalline insulators and to predict phenomenologically distinct examples. In particular, the two wallpaper groups with multiple glide lines, pgg and p4g, allow for a topological insulating phase whose surface spectrum consists of only a single, fourfold-degenerate, true Dirac fermion, representing an exception to a symmetry-enhanced fermion-doubling theorem. We theoretically predict the presence of this phase in Sr2Pb3 in space group 127 (P4/mbm).

Abstract:
Molds are toxic and harmful to the human body. In this study, we intended to produce anti-mold wallpaper using easily obtained substances. First, four strains were separated and identified from actual moldy wallpaper. Next, Vanillin and o-Vanillin were both selected as anti-mold substances due to the fact that they were confirmed to have growth-inhibitory effects on the four identified strains. For all the strains, the growth inhibitory effect of o-Vanillin was higher than Vanillin. It was verified that the higher the treatment concentration of Vanillin and o-Vanillin, the higher the ROS production in all fungi, which means the anti-mold activity of Vanillin and o-Vanillin is related to the increase in ROS production. Vanillin and o-Vanillin were smeared on the wallpaper to confirm this anti-mold effect. Mold growth was suppressed in the wallpaper treated with Vanillin of 0.05M or more and o-Vanillin of 0.01M or more, but at concentrations below that, the growth of the mold did not differ significantly from the control group. The cytotoxicity of Vanillin and o-Vanillin was directly proportional to the concentration of the treated candidate substances, and the cytotoxicity of o-Vanillin was higher than that of Vanillin. Therefore, it would be appropriate to apply Vanillin of 0.05M or less for the use of anti-mold wallpaper. Based on its stronger anti-mold activity when compared to anti-mold drugs on the market, Vanillin can be used in a wide variety of places, including anti-mold sprays and paints.

Kata kunci : Ergonomi, Desain, Muskuluskeletal, Wallpaper Abstract The work of the wallpaper is done for 8 hours per day. Workers work with the working conditions of bending due to the unavailability of good facilities and infrastructures. One of the success factors of the job is the availability of good tools and infrastructure. If the facilities and infrastructures do not meet the good working standards it will pose muskuluskeletal complaints, increase the workload and reduce the productivity of the work. The results of interviews with wallpaper-glueing workers, obtained information that workers often experience pain complaints after work. Pain complaints are caused by an unergonomic means and work infrastructure. Based on the results of interviews with employees of 2 people or 100% feel pain on the right shoulder, back, waist, left wrist, right wrist, ankle send right ankle, left leg and right foot., 1 person Or 50% feel pain in left hand, right hand, left and right thighs, calf left and right. Then it is necessary to repair the work by designing the table and working chair of the wallpaper glueing to reduce the complaint of muskuluskeletal fatigue. "Frequency-Selective Wallpaper for Indoor Interference Reduction and MIMO Capacity Improvement." Symmetry 12, no. 5 (May 1, 2020): 695. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/sym12050695.

Abstract:
This paper presents the design and features of frequency-selective wallpaper—based on periodic and symmetric metallic hexagons—intended to be attached to standard walls for filtering out 5 GHz signals (e.g., IEEE 802.11a systems) without blocking other selected radio communication services (e.g., cellular mobile communication signals). It analyzes the characteristics of the radio channel—as found within standard indoor environments—with both regular walls and walls with the proposed frequency-selective wallpaper, examined using a ray-launching program for single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. This allows the harvesting of parameters, including channel capacity, power delay profile, and signal-to-interference ratio, for proper comparison between the two environments under study: with and without the presented wallpaper. The achieved results clearly show that the use of the proposed frequency-selective wallpaper in an indoor scenario reduces interference levels by an additional attenuation of up to 20 dB in comparison to an unpapered wall. Additionally, with MIMO systems, radio channel characteristics, such as capacity, are improved due to the increase in the magnitude of all singular values of the channel transfer matrix compared to the unpapered wall case, thereby leading to the existence of more relevant subchannels.

Abstract:
During the preparations for the Rijksmuseum depot’s move to its new location, Collectie Centrum Nederland (CCNL) in 2018, a hand-painted scenic landscape on paper that is 2,309 centimetres long and 180 centimetres high came to light. Together with five broadly similar, but shorter pieces, the group of objects was briefly described on a museum inventory card in 1962 as six rolls of wallpaper. After extensive research and conservation, it now appears that four of these are in fact fragments of a moving panorama. More specifically, they have been identified as surviving parts of what was known as the Reuzen-Cyclorama (Giant Cyclorama) or Cyclorama Reichardt, named after its German owner, Ferdinand Reichardt (b. 1813). This particular moving panorama, originally measuring an astounding one and a half kilometres, was an extraordinary phenomenon that is documented as having travelled through the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain between 1853 and 1855. It was shown to the public, rolled between two wooden poles and accompanied by music or storytelling, in order to give people an experience of travelling the regions of Tyrol, Switzerland and Italy. The article will follow the interdisciplinary quest undertaken by curators and conservators that led to the compelling new understanding of the purpose of these long-forgotten lengthy paper landscapes in the Rijksmuseum’s collection.
