Purpose This case study of the strategy of the U.S. grocery chain, ALDI, shows how businesses can use a systematic process to develop and iteratively refine the core strategy powering their business model.” Design/methodology/approach The case describes how ALDI, the upstart entrant established a foothold, a strategy stumble by Walmart, the market leader, provided the newcomer with an attractive opportunity to expand its competitive reach into more upscale neighborhoods. Findings Aldi is continuing to build a business model that allowes it to price its products at an order of magnitude below other grocers and also develop a reputation for private label quality that has ultimately enabled it to challenge leading discount grocers. Social implications Some analysts expect a significant number of supermarket war casualties–more grocery store bankruptcies and liquidations over the next few years. Originality/value ALDI has begun a campaign to offer its customers more value at even lower prices. Other foreign entrants sense their moment has arrived to leap into the fray now that giant Walmart finally seems open to attack. Amazon is experimenting with grocery selling. Recent chain store news headlines tell the breaking story: “Supermarket Wars!”

Abstract:
In light of the rapid progression of digital technology, fierce competition, and the ever-shifting demands of consumers, the contemporary retail sector is continually evolving. This underscores the critical need to embrace digital solutions. This study seeks to aid Walmart, one of the world's largest retailers, in improving supply chain efficiency, optimizing inventory management, and enhancing the overall customer experience by creating a comprehensive supply chain database. Specifically, we employ the core entity method to identify Walmart's key entity, which is the "product," and ascertain its associated entities. Subsequently, we establish relational models based on the attributes and relationships of each table, considering real-world scenarios, such as one-to-many and many-to-many relationships. We employ normalization techniques to ensure the proper utilization of functional dependencies and candidate keys for each entity. This guarantees that the designed tables adhere to the principles of the First, Second, and Third Normal Forms, preserving data integrity while minimizing redundancy. Furthermore, we create a set of logical database commands, illustrated through flowcharts, and rigorously test their functionality and efficiency. Lastly, we explore potential directions for future research. The successful implementation of this design relies on robust data management practices and a reliable database system tailored to meet Walmart's specific needs. This results in a logically structured and standardized supply chain database. The research findings underscore the vital importance of a well-conceived supply chain database in addressing the challenges faced by large-scale retail operations like Walmart supermarkets.

Global enterprises such as Walmart use Workday to harmonize staffing and vendor management activities, and to integrate supply chain activities. Failures of such integrations can result in operational inefficiencies and financial losses, and even ruin critical workflows. In this paper we have developed an EDA for Workday integration event monitoring using Java Message Service (JMS) and RabbitMQ. The construction of predictive dashboards and proactive alerts is proposed to be integrated with Core Connector and Enterprise Interface Builder (EIB). A case study with a multinational retailer has resulted in improved logistics visibility and a 25% reduction in supply chain disruptions. These results provide the validity of EDA for large scale enterprise operations.

Initially associated with cryptocurrency, blockchain has evolved to serve diverse private and enterprise applications, ensuring robust data protection. The core of blockchain technology lies in its decentralized architecture, which enables secure and efficient data transmission within a network, keeping information shielded from unauthorized access while granting privileged users exclusive rights for data interaction. Major global corporations such as Walmart, IBM, and Google are actively integrating blockchain technology to develop Decentralized Applications (DApps). These smart systems, executed on distributed computer networks, facilitate the creation of Smart Contracts—automated, secure, distributed ledgers that enable tamper-proof and transparent transactions. Utilizing the robust cryptographic algorithm SHA256, Smart Contracts generate a 256-bit signature for input text, ensuring data security and integrity. The Ethereum Blockchain Platform, a widely adopted public network, plays a crucial role in enabling secure transaction exchanges through DApps. Blockchain technology's impact spans various sectors, including marketing, business, education, and supply chain management. This study explores the application of the Ethereum Blockchain Platform within the academic system, specifically focusing on the development of an Online Examination System. The proposed application leverages Smart Contracts, NodeJS for server runtime, and MongoDB as the database system, demonstrating enhanced security over traditional cloud-based solutions. The findings highlight the superior trustworthiness and reliability of blockchain-based online examination systems compared to conventional methods.

The rapid growth of e-commerce has fundamentally changed the logistics landscape, creating an increasing demand for faster, more efficient supply chains. One of the most promising strategies to address these challenges is the implementation of cross-docking—a logistics method that minimizes storage time, reduces costs, and accelerates the delivery of goods. This article focuses on the strategic organization of cross-docking in supply chains, specifically between China and the USA, with the goal of speeding up the delivery of goods to warehouses of e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Walmart. The relevance of the study is underscored by the need for e-commerce platforms to adapt to the ever-evolving customer demands while remaining competitive in the marketplace through logistics optimization.The research highlights key differences between cross-docking and traditional warehousing methods, outlining the advantages of cross-docking for minimizing storage time and cost, especially in international supply chains. Cross-docking eliminates the need for long-term storage by allowing goods to be transferred directly from inbound transportation to outbound shipping, providing companies with faster and more flexible supply chain solutions. These strategies are particularly relevant in the context of the US-China trade, where geographical distance and high consumer demand for timely deliveries present unique logistical challenges.The article details the core principles of cross-docking, identifying its main operational schemes: single-stage and two-stage processes. Each of these methods is explored in terms of their respective benefits for e-commerce platforms, including reduced inventory levels, faster order processing, and cost efficiency. Additionally, the article examines the role of advanced technologies, such as Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), RFID tracking, and automation, in optimizing cross-docking operations. These technologies not only enhance the speed and accuracy of cargo handling but also improve real-time visibility of goods throughout the supply chain.The article also addresses the current challenges faced by companies when implementing cross-docking in e-commerce. These include complex supply chain coordination, inventory visibility, high initial investment costs, and the need for well-trained staff capable of managing rapid cross-docking processes. Despite these obstacles, the article proposes strategic solutions, including improved coordination with customs brokers, trucking companies, and express delivery operators, to ensure smooth operations between China and the USA. The strategic placement of cross-docking facilities near final delivery points, as well as the integration of local logistics operators, is crucial for optimizing last-mile delivery and reducing overall costs.Finally, the article provides real-world examples of successful cross-docking implementation by major companies such as Walmart, Amazon, and DHL, demonstrating the tangible benefits of this logistics method in enhancing supply chain efficiency. The prospects for cross-docking in e-commerce are promising, particularly with the ongoing advancement of automation, IoT, and big data analytics, all of which are expected to further streamline cross-docking processes.In conclusion, cross-docking is positioned as a pivotal logistics strategy for supply chains between China and the USA. The article argues that, while cross-docking is not a one-size-fits-all solution, it offers significant advantages when implemented correctly, providing businesses with faster deliveries, lower costs, and greater supply Chain flexibility

As an emergent field of inquiry, Data Science serves both the information technology world and the applied sciences. Data Science is a known term that tends to be synonymous with the term Big-Data; however, Data Science is the application of solutions found through mathematical and computational research while Big-Data Science describes problems concerning the analysis of data with respect to volume, variation, and velocity (3V). Even though there is not much developed in theory from a scientific perspective for Data Science, there is still great opportunity for tremendous growth. Data Science is proving to be of paramount importance to the IT industry due to the increased need for understanding the insurmountable amount of data being produced and in need of analysis. In short, data is everywhere with various formats. Scientists are currently using statistical and AI analysis techniques like machine learning methods to understand massive sets of data, and naturally, they attempt to find relationships among datasets. In the past 10 years, the development of software systems within the cloud computing paradigm using tools like Hadoop and Apache Spark have aided in making tremendous advances to Data Science as a discipline [Z. Sun, L. Sun and K. Strang, Big data analytics services for enhancing business intelligence, Journal of Computer Information Systems (2016), doi: 10.1080/08874417.2016.1220239]. These advances enabled both scientists and IT professionals to use cloud computing infrastructure to process petabytes of data on daily basis. This paper seeks to address pragmatic ways of looking at how Data Science — with respect to Big-Data Science — is practiced in the modern world. We also examine how mathematics and computer science help shape Big-Data Science’s terrain. Abstract Contact Registries are an essential resource in recruiting and retaining research participants. They are often used to gather contact and demographic information such as a person’s mailing address, age, phone number, race and/or ethnicity, and health interests which help to determine their eligibility for future studies. Contact Registries can play a key role in promoting research participation among underrepresented groups, and therefore aid in the elimination of cancer health disparities. The purpose of the Florida-California Cancer Research, Education, and Engagement (CaRE2) Health Equity Center Contact Registry was to create a database of Black/African American and/or Hispanic/Latino/a participants who are interested in learning about future research projects conducted at one of the following CaRE2 institutions: the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), the University of Florida (UF), and the University of Southern California (USC). Our primary objective is to increase the number of persons aware of the conduct of cancer research, to ultimately increase the number of persons participating in cancer health-related research from African American and Hispanic/Latino communities in both Florida and California. The CaRE2 Contact Registry was implemented in August 2022 by the CaRE2 Community Outreach Core, one of the six (6) key cores within the CaRE2 Center. Recruitment consists of both in-person and online methods available in both Spanish and English and data storage through REDCap. For in-person enrollment a consent/authorization form and OPT IN survey are completed; meanwhile, our online recruitment requires an additional screening questionnaire. Eligibility for our registry requires that the participant resides in either California or Florida, must be 18+ years old, Black/African American, and/or Hispanic/Latino/a. In addition to collecting contact and demographic information, participants are able to choose their research study preferences. For example, they can choose to participate in surveys, community forums, focus groups, a cancer advocacy training program, and/or to provide a hair, saliva, or blood sample. Upon survey completion, a compensation of a $10.00 Walmart gift card, either in a physical or electronic version, is provided to each participant. Our study team promotes the registry at local community events and through our center’s social media accounts and website (https://care2healthequitycenter.org/the-care2-contact-registry/). With a targeted goal of 2,000 participants, we currently have 509 at UF; of which, 440 are Black/African American and 69 Hispanic/Latino, and have agreed to learn more about cancer research in their communities. In conclusion, we present information on our innovative recruitment efforts that can be beneficial in other community-based participatory research studies. We also share the challenges and barriers experienced when implementing this registry. It is of high importance to engage minorities in these types of registries for representation in these areas of cancer research.
