Bisweilen wird Walser unterstellt, er suche über die Ausschließung des Jüdischen das Nationale zu stärken und behaupte die Unversöhnlichkeit von Tätergemeinschaft und Opfergemeinschaft nach 1945. Das bislang in der Forschung wenig beachtete Hörspiel "Das Gespenst von Gattnau" lässt die Annahme einer anderen Tendenz zu: die Tendenz zur Versöhnung.
Since his Friedenspreisrede in 1998 the number of publications imputing the opus of Martin Walser to be nationalistic and anti-Semitic rises. Sometimes it is suggested that he tries to strengthen nationalistic tendendices with an exklusion of the Jewish and that there is irreconcilability between the community of delinquents and the community of victims after 1945. Walsers Radio Play "Das Gespenst von Gattnau" admits the assumption of another tendency: the tendency of conciliation.

Cette thèse s'intéresse aux techniques employées par l'écrivain suisse Robert Walser (1878-1956) et par ses protagonistes pour arriver à ce qu'on peut appeler leur "souveraineté". Il s'agit là d'un mode d'existence qui privilégie rôles et masques pour échapper aux contraintes imposées par la société moderne, contraintes estimées dangereuses, car aliénantes, par des individus qui refusent de s'enfermer dans une identité immuable et, de par cette immuabilité, mortifère. La réflexion entreprise ici se propose de dégager les différentes facettes de cette souveraineté (telles qu'on les trouve dans l'univers du travail, dans les relations intimes et dans le rapport de l'écrivain à l'écriture, envisagée comme utilisation non aliénante de la langue) et de montrer les limites d'une attitude qui, dans son individualisme intransigeant, jaloux de ses libertés, se voit confrontée au danger de la solitude (sur le plan social) et du non-sens (sur le plan linguistique). Elle s'appuie notamment sur la théorie systémiste développée par Niklas Luhmann. Celle-ci, qui conceptualise les rapports entre système psychique et système social et accorde une place privilégiée à l'examen des conditions nécessaires à une communication réussie, se révèle particulièrement apte à servir d'outil dans l'étude d'une œuvre prise entre désir et refus de communiquer
This thesis examines the techniques employed by the Swiss writer Robert Walser (1878-1956) and by his protagonists in order to obtain what can be called their "sovereignty": an attitude which privileges roles and masks allowing to elude the constraints imposed by modern society and considered as alienating by individuals who refuse to imprison themselves in an immovable and, owing to that immovability, stifling identity. The present investigation intends to elucidate the different aspects of this sovereignty (as they can be found in the sphere of work, in intimate relationship and in the writer's efforts to invent a non alienating form of writing) and to indicate the limits of an attitude which, in its inflexible individualism and its eagerness for unrestrained liberty, is confronted with the danger of solitude (social failure) and nonsense (linguistic failure). This analysis is based especially on the systems theory developed by Niklas Luhmann, which, by conceptualizing the relations between psychical system and social system and by conferring a central position to the examination of the conditions necessary to a successful communication, reveals itself particularly fitted as an instrument in the study of a work oscillating between the desire and the reluctance to communicate

Abstract This thesis is a study of the phenomenon of prosaicness in the works of Martin Walser. The concept of prosaicness is based on an analysis of the existential philosophy of Martin Heidegger. This concept is the basis of the interpretation of selected texts. Walser's description of prosaicness is examined in depth in two subject areas: Firstly, the phenomenon of anonymity in his radio plays; secondly, experiences of deprivation in Walser's novels. Special emphasis is placed on the disappearance of the subject in everyday life, on childhood, on homeland and on the reunification of Germany in 1989/1990. Walser's existentialist writing is seen as a literary expression of coming to terms with occurrences of crises in modern times
Abstract Die Studie untersucht das Phänomen der Alltäglichkeit im Werk Martin Walsers. Der Begriff der Alltäglichkeit wird aus einer Analyse der Existenzphilosophie Martin Heideggers gewonnen und als Leitbegriff zur Interpretation ausgewählter Texte herangezogen. Walsers Beschreibung der Alltäglichkeit wird in zwei Themenbereichen vertieft: In einem ersten Schritt wendet sich die Studie dem Phänomen der Anonymität in den Hörspielen zu; in einem zweiten Schritt wird nach Mangel-Erfahrungen in den Romanen gefragt. In den Blick geraten dabei das Verschwinden des Subjekts im Alltag, Kindheit und Heimat sowie die Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands 1989/90. Walsers existenzialistische Schreibweise wird als Ausdruck und als literarische Bewältigung von Krisenerscheinungen der Moderne verstanden
Tiivistelmä Väitöskirjassa tutkitaan arkipäiväisyyden ilmiötä Martin Walserin teoksessa. Arkipäiväisyyden käsite pohjautuu Martin Heideggerin eksistentiaalifilosofiseen analyysiin ja sitä käytetään pääkäsitteenä valittujen tekstien tulkinnassa. Walserin arkipäiväisyyden kuvaukseen syvennytään kahden aihealueen myötä: ensiksi kuunnelmissa esiintyvään anonymiteettiin, toiseksi puutteen kokemuksiin romaaneissa. Tässä tutkimuksen kohteena ovat subjektin häviäminen arkipäivässä, lapsuus ja kotiseutu sekä Saksojen yhdistyminen 1989/90. Walserin eksistentialistinen kirjoitustapa ymmärretään modernismin ilmaisuksi ja kriisi-ilmiöistä selviytymiseksi kirjallisuuden avulla

Abstract:
This thesis is based on a comparative study of plays by two contemporary authors: Die Zimmerschlacht and Ein fliehendes Pferd by the German author Martin Walser and A Delicate Balance by the American playwright Edward Albee. Critics have stressed the emphasis which both playwrights lay on dialogue as the driving force of their dramatic art. Hence an analysis with pragmatics appears particularly pertinent. I demonstrate that methods and findings from linguistic pragmatics applied to ordinary language are equally relevant to critical analysis of dramatic action. My work draws in a broad but targeted way on pragmatic devices mainly from three different studies: G. Leech, The Principles of Pragmatics, P. B. Brown and S. C. Levinson, Politeness. Some Universals in Language Usage and P. Watzlawick, J. B. Bavelas, D. D. Jackson, Pragmatics of Human Communication. A Study of Interactional Patterns, Pathologies and Paradoxes. I elaborate on how the tenets of pragmatics expose levels of meanings and character’s motivations not immediately derivable from the surface structure of utterances. I aim to provide pragmatic devices to explore a character’s behaviour and communicational targets and also focus on the level of communication between playwrights and audiences. Not withstanding their cultural differences both authors reveal similarities in their approach. They are concerned with social reality and its effect on human relations. Although not overtly political the plays by the two authors clearly denounce the refusal of individuals to engage beyond their own interests as social conformism thereby suggesting the necessity of embracing a more tolerant and empathetic attitude. Language is shown to illustrate the individual struggle between social demands, private desire and demands of contemporary society.

Abstract:
Generic delimitation within the Trichilieae (Meliaceae) is considered, with particular reference to the Trichilia P. Browne - Heynea Roxb. ex Sims - Walsura Roxb. complex. Original investigations of leaf-surface micromorphology, palynology and fruit anatomy are made of species of each genus of the tribe and an isoenzyme study is made of species of Trichilia. Heynea and Walsura. The accounts of these studies are extensively illustrated with photographs, scanning-electron-micrographs and annotated drawings. Seed dispersal systems are briefly considered including original field observations of a species of Walsura. In the light of the data revealed by these studies, inter-generic relationships are discussed. The Indo-Malesian genus Walsura is taxonomically revised and the closely related new genus Pseudoclausena is segregated from it and described. Within Walsura. a new section (Ruswala) and three new species (W. dehiscens. W. pachycaulon and W. sarawakensis) are described and one new combination is made (W. trifoliolata ssp. acuminata). The new genus consists of one new species (P. chrysogyne). formerly W. chrysogyne (Miq.) Bakh.f, and W. velutina Ridley is reduced to a new forma of it. Keys are given for the identification of all taxa and the species are illustrated by drawings and (in some cases) by photographs. A cladistic analysis is made of all the species of Walsura. Pseudoclausena and Heynea. taking Trichilia as the outgroup. This, together with the findings of the above studies and published data indicate that Heynea should be considered a distinct genus in the alliance of Walsura. A key for the identification of these four genera is given. The other genera of the tribe are briefly considered and all are maintained as distinct. The great diversity of fruit structures within the tribe provides particularly good characters for the segregation of these genera.

La perplexité suscitée par le discours que Martin Walser (né en 1927) a pronocé à Francfort, lors de la remise du Prix de la paix que les libraires allemands lui ont attribué en 1998, invite à s'interroger sur la cohérence dans la durée des nombreuses positions que l'auteur a prises depuis les années 1950 dans des essais, discours et interviews. La thèse proposée ici est celle de l'adoption par Walser d'une position foncièrement sceptique qui pourrait conférer intelligibilité à ses textes non-fictionnels et relativiser les apparentes contradictions de ses observations sur la société. Ces textes sont analysés suivant un plan thématique en trois parties traitant respectivement de la quête de reconnaissance de l'écrivain, de l'engagement de l'intellectuel au service de la démocratie et des souffrances de l'Allemand face à l'histoire. Il en ressort que le specticisme, chez Walser, joue à la fois un rôle de moteur et de frein en cela qu'il est un instrument heuristique qui l'accompagne dans sa recherche permanente de liberté d'évolution et d'expression individuelle et qui se différencie d'un pessimisme qui aurait pu conduire au mutisme
The perplexity incited by the speech Martin Walser pronounced for the Frankfurt Book Fair's prestigious Peace Prizein 1998, invites us to question the coherence of the numerous positions the author had taken in his essays, speeches and interviews since the 1950's. This thesis defends the adoption by Walser of a position fundamentally spectical as rendering his non-fictional texts intelligible. The aim of this work is to analyse these texts following a thematic plan in three parts : to respectively treat his search for recognition for writers, his commitment as an intellectual at the service of democracy and the suffering as a German dealing with the nation's past. We reach the conclusion that Walser's scepticism plays the role of both motor and brake-it being the instrument to accompany him in his ongoing research into the liberty of evolution and individual expression, his form of scepticism can be differentiated from a form of pessimism that could have otherwise conducted him to mutism

Abstract:
This dissertation proposes the investigation of the poetics of the Swiss writer Robert Walser. Such research has Jakob von Gunten. Ein Tagebüch as the main object , discussed along with his other prose pieces, poetries and romances. According to the hypotheses developed such poetic concernes constriction, ie, what draws boundaries and limitations, but also freedom, the coefficient of malleability which is in these limits. It is argued, finally, the idea that there is, in Robert Walser, the concept of a form of freedom that don't want to be unique and individual, and that includes its own limitations just like the condition of their very existence.
A presente dissertação propõe a investigação da poética do escritor suiço Robert Walser. Tal pesquisa tem como objeto principal a obra Jakob von Gunten. Ein tagebüch, abordada conjuntamente a seus demais trabalhos em prosa curta, poesia e romance. Segundo as hipóteses desenvolvidas, tal poética diria respeito à constrição, ou seja, àquilo que traça limites e limitações, mas também a liberdade, o coeficiente de maleabilidade que há em tais limites. Defende-se, por fim, a ideia de que há, em Robert Walser, a concepção de uma forma de liberdade que não quer ser única e individual e que contempla seus próprios limites justamente como condição de sua existência mesma.

Cette étude se propose d'examiner la façon dont Martin Walser allie, au travers de son oeuvre romanesque, engagement social et création littéraire. Martin Walser qualifie la société d'"énorme machinerie du conditionnement social" qui détermine l'individu dans sa vie professionnelle et privée, dans son comportement et ses rapports à autrui. Etudier l'image de la société dans l'oeuvre walsérienne revient à analyser la dichotomie du rapport individu-société : d'un côté l'extériorité de la société, de l'autre l'intériorité du social vécu comme aliénation ou comme frustration. Le rapport dialectique entre individu et société est au centre des préoccupations de Martin Walser dont le programme littéraire consiste à caractériser, à travers l'expérience d'un personnage central, un environnement politique, économique et social. La "Trilogie" présente à travers le destin de son héros Anselm Kristlein, une image critique de la société d'abondance ouest-allemande entre les années 50 et 70 ; l'histoire d'Alfred Dorn dans "Die Verteidigung der Kindheit" met en lumière une Allemagne souffrant de sa division. Cette étude propose, en premier lieu, une présentation générale de l'auteur, de son engagement politique, de son oeuvre en prose ainsi que de sa réflexion théorique sur le réalisme et sur les rapports entre réel et fiction. Puis, elle s'applique à déterminer les réalités politico-historiques et socio-économiques transposées dans les oeuvres, à définir le rapport des héros à leur environnement social et à analyser les formes de médiation esthétique de la critique sociale
This thesis deals with the way Martin Walser combines social engagement and literary creation in his literary work. He calls society an "enormous conditioning machine" that determines the individual in his professional and private life, in his behaviour and his relations to others. The study of the image of society in Walser's works implies analyzing the dichotomy in the relation between individual and society ; on the one hand, the outer appearance of society, and on the other hand, the effects of society on the inner self, experienced as alienation or as frustration. The dialectical relation between individual and society is at the core of Martin Walser's work ; his literary program is meant to characterize a political, economic and social environment through the principal character's experiences. Through the destiny of its hero Anselm Kristlein, the "Trilogy" presents a critical view of the West German affluent society from the 50s to the 70s ; the history of Alfred Dorn of "Die Verteidigung der Kindheit" illustrates the suffering the division inflicts on Germany. This thesis presents first of all a general approach to the author, to his political engagement, his work in prose as well as his theoritical reflections on realism and to the relation between reality and fiction. Then it deals with the politico-historical and socio-economical realities as they are laid out in the author's works ; it defines the relation of the heroes with their social environment and analyzes the way social criticism is conveyed
