Abstract:

Zu den feuilletonistischen Arbeiten des Schweizer Autors Robert Walser (1878–1956), eines Meisters der Kleinen Formen, gehören zahlreiche literarische Porträts, die sich zunächst historischen Gestalten wie Kleist, Büchner oder Brentano widmeten und im Spätwerk, insbesondere in den Publikationen der Prager Presse, zunehmend auch Zeitgenossen wie Trakl, Rilke, George sowie Maler wie Albert Anker, Van Gogh, Cézanne und Renoir adaptierten. Das Interesse Walsers an der bildenden Kunst war nicht zuletzt durch seinen Bruder Karl Walser gegeben, der um die Jahrhundertwende in Berlin als vielseitiger Künstler zu Ruhm gekommen war.2 Die enge Arbeitsbeziehung der Brüder beruhte auf Gegenseitigkeit: Karl Walser illustrierte Bücher Robert Walsers, und in dessen Werk wiederum kam dem Maler eine exponierte Stellung zu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focusses on the history of the Walser migration in general and the settlement of Galtür in particular, looking at the reasons why the Walser people left their homeland and at the conditions under which they established new settlements. In addition this paper tries to find out whether traces of the Walser people and their culture still exist, particularly on the example of Galtür. Does a commemorative culture in the centres of the Walser migration and settlement exist in today’s Galtür? Do people there identify themselves as Walsers? The research to answer these questions is based on literature, online newspaper databases and empirical data gathered from an interview with an elderly resident of Galtür.

Abstract:

Wie das literarische Feuilleton der Zwischenkriegszeit mit katalogartigen Textstrukturen experimentiert, wird ausgehend von Robert Walsers paradigmatischem Alphabet (1921), das auch in die Nähe des französischen Surrealismus rückt, erkundet. Weitere Spielformen des feuilletonistischen Buchstabierens reichen von den satirisch geschärften Alphabeten Kurt Tucholskys und Anton Kuhs bis zu den Feuilletonsammlungen Ernst Kammerers, welche die neue Sprach- und Feuilletonordnung nach 1933 nur noch nachstammeln. The literary feuilleton of the interwar period experimented with catalogue-like text structures. This is explored starting with Robert Walser’s paradigmatic Alphabet (1921), which also moves close to French surrealism. Other forms of feuilletonistic spelling range from the satirically sharpened alphabets of Kurt Tucholsky and Anton Kuh to the feuilleton collections of Ernst Kammerer, which only stammer the new language and feuilleton order after 1933.

Abstract:

Martin Walsers Debütroman Ehen in Philippsburg erschien 1957, im ersten Jahrzehnt des Wirtschaftswunders der 1950er und 1960er Jahre. Das Thema Liebe und Ehe ist seitdem bei Walser frequent. Er schildert in diesem Roman verschiedene Ehen in einer bessergestellten sozialen Schicht, kontrastiert diese aber auch mit der Welt der einfachen Arbeiter. Die Fragestellung des vorliegenden Artikels ist, wie insbesondere die junge Generation mit der Frage von Familie und Ehe umgeht und welche Form des Zusammenlebens sie wählt. Nur ein Jahrzehnt vorher endete ein für alle umstürzendes Kriegsgeschehen, das die Welt in Trümmern und zerbrochene Familien hinterlassen hatte. Die ersten, ansatzweise modernen Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts, in denen auch neue Formen des Zusammenlebens erprobt wurden, waren damit ausradiert. In der sogenannten Stunde Null mussten alle gesellschaftlichen Strukturen neu formiert werden. Wie sah es nun für die Ehe und Familie aus? Lassen sich bei den jüngsten Protagonisten Desorientierung, Re-Orientierung an alten Formen oder ein Neubeginn hinsichtlich des familiären Gefüges feststellen? Der vorliegende Beitrag zeigt auf, wie der Problemkomplex bei Walser literarisch verarbeitet wird und wie sich diese Darstellung auch mit den gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen verknüpfen lässt. Ein ehe- und familienhistorischer Abriss soll dabei Kontext und Orientierung liefern.

AbstraktMartin Walsers Novelle Ein fliehendes Pferd ist Psychogramm und Gesellschaftsanalyse zugleich; Themen wie Diskrepanz von Lebensplan, gespielte Rollen und Alltagsrealität, sowie der Verlust des Ichs, die Suche nach der eigenen Identität, Beziehungsarmut, Produktion von Schein, Lebenssterilität und der Mangel an wahrer Kommunikation werden durch die Gestalten der Novelle projiziert. Die Viererkonstellation der Novelle zeigt eine starke Polarität der Männergestalten, die aber tief von einem gemeinsamen Fluchtzwang geprägt ist. Die grundlegende Zielsetzung des Artikels ist die Problematik der Charaktergestaltung unter die Lupe zu nehmen, sodass der Fokus an das schachspielartige Verhältnis von Helmut und Klaus gesetzt wird.

Abstract:

Abstract In the linguistic imagery of his texts and also in his consistent biographical retreat, the author Robert Walser presents the riddles of an aesthetic relationship between self and other to the world. From the diversity of his extremely relational view of the world emerges a tension-rich charge of his texts, which is taken up by numerous visual artists. The tension consists in the simultaneity of abstraction and vividness, of cosmographic expansion and extreme reduction (e. g., in the micrograms), of similarity as well as difference. Thomas Hirschhorn and Mark Wallinger are quite similar in their love for Walser, but they are far apart in their artistic consequences. They shape the extremely relational and yet always precarious view of the world either in adhesions or volatility, physicality or shadow, publicity or isolation, ruins or paths, concretizations or abstractions. A politically effective aesthetic connects the two artists with Robert Walser in a poetic trialogue, for it is a matter of communication and discursive exposition, not of enlightenment or agitation.

AbstractMartin Walser's reflections on German self-identity have made him a controversial author: whereas critics have raised charges of ,,literary anti-Semitism", his defenders consider him – as a writer who since the early 1960s has shown a preoccupation with his country's Nazi past – immune to such criticism. Taking both arguments seriously, Matthias N. Lorenz has reviewed Walser's allegedly untenable positions on the Holocaust in his book ,,Auschwitz drängt uns auf einen Fleck": Judendarstellung und Auschwitzdiskurs bei Martin Walser. In this essay the author concisely presents the main theses and thoughts of Lorenz's widely discussed Ph.D. dissertation.

AbstractThe paper analyses the link between the National Socialist Euthanasia-Programme, the Holocaust and the effect of these mass murders on the children of perpetrators as depicted in Martin Walser’s Der schwarze Schwan. First performed during the Frankfurter Auschwitz-Process, the drama prefigures later psychoanalytical theories on the transmission of guilt to the second generation. A close reading of the drama reveals the importance of childhood memories and contrasts them with Walser’s statements on the effect of the holocaust on his childhood memories.

Abstract:

The article analyses the intersubjective relationships displayed in Mikhail Shiskhin’s essays concerned with other writers, such as Robert Walser, James Joyce, and Vladimir Sharov. The author demonstrates that the narrator’s statements are intersubjective, which is supported by both the system of the transmitting-receiving activity of the subject and the area of the statements’ object. Shishkin pays special attention to Walser. According to Shishkin, the process of becoming a writer is achieved through deprivation, alienation, and being misunderstood, as well as, most importantly, by experiencing the euphory of writing and acceptance of asthenic inability to write. A closer look at the poetics of the essays lets us explore elaborately intertwined series of motifs and repetitions, which appear on the text’s various levels. Rhetorical features, in particular anaphora, geminatio, and anadiplosis, are discussed in the present article most thoroughly. The specific use of repletion allows Shishkin to achieve a convincing dynamic description of Walser’s contradictory impulses in life and writing.
