Abstract:
The paper examines causal relationship between corporate investment and inflation for four countries in West African Monetary Zone, using the Vector Error Correction model (VECM). The study discovered that there is co-integration between investment and inflation in the selected countries in WAMZ. This implies that a long run relationship between inflation and investment in the selected WAMZ nations. The results show that investment Granger causes inflation in Gambia, Ghana and Nigeria while inflation Granger causes investment in Sierra Leone but bi-directional relationship inflation and investment was not found in WAMZ.  However, the results show that there are needs to ensure reforms and policies that should be adopted and must become the utmost priority in the WAMZ economies for the monetary policy to be effective in influencing economic activities which in turn enhances investment in the zone.

Abstract:
Exchange-rate movements are mostly unpredictable, and this tends to affect both trade and foreign investment flows. This is because foreign investors are unclear on the returns to investment decisions in such cases. Hence, this study examines the effect of exchange rate, its volatility and uncertainty on foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow in West African monetary zone (WAMZ). The study covers the period1980–2014, and the within estimator for the fixed effect model is employed. The study accounts for both exchange rate volatility and uncertainty measures which are anticipated and unanticipated exchange rate innovations measures, respectively. The results show that exchange-rate movements in WAMZ countries are more of unanticipated than anticipated innovations in affecting FDI inflow. Therefore, policies aimed at targeting exchange-rate stability are essential in the WAMZ countries since investors are profit maximizers; hence, investment uncertainties must be kept as low as possible. Also since WAMZ export sectors are primary products based, policies should be geared towards the diversification of the export sectors to combat unanticipated global shocks from commodity prices movement in having an effect on the exchange rate through the foreign exchange reserve channel.

Abstract:
It is observed that despite the legislative endorsement of the West Africa Countries there is still a glaring divergence in economic structures, which impedes the performance to realize macroeconomic convergence and economic growth within the region. This paper investigated the effects of trade and financial indexes in WAMZ on economic growth. The paper uses three variables and a host of control measures to focus on six countries of WAMZ covering the periods of 2001-2018. Given the heterogeneous nature of the information gathered for the study, the models are cast in static and dynamic panel frameworks that provided micro-structure for the combined data analysis. The models were tested with various econometric and statistical instruments. Results from the analysis show that exported trade is highly concentrated to fewer goods, while imported trade is concentrated on more products and partners; that is, countries in WAMZ tend to shadow liberal import policy. The weak link was also noticed among financial and trade indexes and economic growth in the WAMZ economies. The implications call for short term economic plans and policies in the WAMZ economies so as to collectively monitor economic policies and growth. We equally observed that the structures of the economies in the region are heterogeneous making it rather difficult for regional trade and financial indicators to accelerate output growth in the region. Thus our basic postulations are an inter-policy approach on social, political and economic (trade and finance) arrangements that would neutralize the heterogeneity and foster institutional and attitudinal reforms, eliminate insecurity challenges, and spur political stability and responsible leadership within the regions.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess the relationship among fiscal variables (net lending, government expenditure and revenue) and economic growth in Sub-Saharan African countries. Design/methodology/approach – Using yearly data for the period between 1980 and 2011 in 15 Economic Communities Of West African States (ECOWAS) countries, the relationship among fiscal variables, economic growth and trade is investigated, through various econometric techniques. Findings – Government expenditure and revenue show pro-cyclical effects in West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and ECOWAS countries, while fiscal balance has a pro-cyclical nature for WAEMU during the years 1999-2011. Moreover, a weak long-run relationship between government expenditure and revenue emerge, but only in the case of West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) countries. Granger causality analysis showed mixed results for WAEMU countries, while for four out of six WAMZ countries (Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone) the “tax-and-spend” hypothesis holds, since government revenue would drive the expenditure. Finally, in the last three decades, cyclical component of economic growth has reduced its fluctuations, both for WAEMU and WAMZ member States. Originality/value – This is the first study on the effects of fiscal policies in the ECOWAS countries.

Abstract:
The study utilized quarterly time series data for Nigeria and three selected West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) countries for the period 1980–2016 to verify whether monetary policy shocks emanating from Nigeria are an important source of macroeconomic fluctuations in WAMZ economies. The study complemented the Global vector autoregressive method with the Diebold–Yilmaz (2009) connectedness weights computation for the analysis. Inferences from generalized impulse response function (GIRF) analysis indicated that an unanticipated Nigerian monetary policy shock depreciates the Nigeria–USA exchange rate, stimulates growth, decelerates inflation and expands the money stock in the short run for Nigeria. In Ghana, Nigeria’s monetary policy shocks similarly depreciates the exchange rate, slows growth with high inflationary impact in the short run. In the Gambia, unanticipated shocks emanating from Nigeria strengthens the Gambia–USA exchange rate, depresses growth and inflationary pressures. Sierra Leone shares the appreciation of its currency with the Gambia, in addition to an economic expansion and rising inflation. Money supply also increases to accommodate the expanding demand. These results validated the thesis that there exist considerable geographical linkages within the WAMZ regions through which macroeconomic fluctuations are transmitted. For policy, monetary authorities in the region should collectively address the question of how to stabilize the economy in response to monetary policy shocks emanating from Nigeria. Abstract:
ABSTRACT In this study, we report the identification of genes required for the biosynthesis of the core lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) of two strains of Proteus mirabilis. Since P. mirabilis and Klebsiella pneumoniae share a core LPS carbohydrate backbone extending up to the second outer-core residue, the functions of the common P. mirabilis genes was elucidated by genetic complementation studies using well-defined mutants of K. pneumoniae. The functions of strain-specific outer-core genes were identified by using as surrogate acceptors LPSs from two well-defined K. pneumoniae core LPS mutants. This approach allowed the identification of two new heptosyltransferases (WamA and WamC), a galactosyltransferase (WamB), and an N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase (WamD). In both strains, most of these genes were found in the so-called waa gene cluster, although one common core biosynthetic gene (wabO) was found outside this cluster.

Abstract:
Purpose: The study examines the effect of international trade costs on trade flows in the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ), a sub-regional economic bloc within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Method: Six member countries of the WAMZ, based on data availability, are examined using panel data estimation technique and the Fully Modified Ordinary Least squares (FMOLS), which is employed to test for the robustness of results, for the sample period of 2006-2018. Results: The study finds a negative and significant effect of international trade costs on trade flows in the WAMZ sub-region. Time to trade is also found to be negatively and significantly related to trade. Exchange rate, financial development (measured by commercial banks' credit to the private sector), and real GDP growth rate (a measure of growth in annual national income/economic size) have a positive and significant impact on trade in the sub-region. The study further finds evidence that the ease of doing business is positively related to trade in the sub-region, but the impact is weak. Implications: In the light of the empirical findings, the study recommends that policy measures and strategies to reduce international trade costs and time to trade through simplified and harmonized trade procedures be implemented in the sub-region. Policies to encourage domestic investment (i.e increase capital stock) and rapid development of the financial sector should also be implemented. These should be supported with sound and stable macroeconomic exchange rate management policies, in order to enhance trade and integration in the sub-region.

Abstract:
The study investigated the impact of labour force participation rate and its implications on food security, fertility rate and economic growth in the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ). Using data from 6 countries over the period of 1990 tо 2016 and pool autoregressive dіstrіbutеd lаg (PАRDL) bоunds tеstіng рrосеdurе was employed. The result from the study showed that female labour force participation and health expenditure per capita determine food security and male labour force participation, female labour force participation, gross capita formation, health education per capita and enrolment in secondary education are the variables that determine fertility rate, while male labour force participation, female labour force participation, health expenditure per capita and enrolment in secondary education affect GDP per capita. The study recommended that policies should be directed toward increasing female labour force participation which will compliment male labour force participation as well as increase decent and productive work opportunities for female workers which will promote GDP per capita, leading to reduction in fertility rate and promote food security among member countries. Furthermore, family-friendly policies will further encourage females to participate in the labour market. Therefore, more efforts should be made to promote female labour force participation as the entire WAMZ countries will benefit from the growth and welfare improvement that it will generate. WAMZ countries governments need build their capacity through investment in health and education in order to enhance productivity of the labour force which will lead to economic growth, reduction in fertility rate as well as promote food security. This study has contributed empirically and theoretically to the body of knowledge. The scope covered also makes the study uniquely robust and different from previous ones.

Abstract:
The context of the globalization suggests that the project of a West African common currency launched by the ECOWAS commission in 1999 is a potential source of opportunities for the small economies of the sub-Region. The common market will increase the scale of their small domestic markets; facilitate the realization of the scale economies; enhance the profitability of the investments and improve the potential product of the economies. Thus, this thesis aims to analyse the effect of that monetary evolution planned for countries following an autonomous monetary and exchange policy in the West African sub-Region. The results show that the economies of the sub-Region are not symmetric, especially because of their growth cycles. The equilibrium exchange rate analyse proves that the non-Participation in the common currency does not shield the West African economies against the exchange rate misalignment for them. Especially a participation of Gambia, Guinea or Sierra-Leone in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) between 1994 and 1999 would have generated a lower exchange rate misalignment for them. But that effect decreases or disappears as for 2000. On another hand, the participation in a common currency or in a monetary area in Sub-Saharian Africa does not affect the welfare measured by growth or HDI. But, both the participation in the monetary area or in the common currency improves the welfare, measured by consumption by head, strongly and significantly. Ultimately the ECOWAS economies are not robustly symmetric. Relative to the misalignment of the exchange rate the non-Participation in the WAEMU is not better, except for Ghana and Nigeria. For all ECOWAS economies, the participation in a common currency or in a monetary area is better for their welfare, measured by the consumption by head. The ECOWAS common currency project is subsequently relevant for monetary union non-Participants economies of the sub-Region

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with the impact of September 11 on the visibility of Muslim communities in Brazil from a network of Sunni institutions, with a focus on two in particular, the Union of Islamic Entities (UNI) and the Islamic World Youth Assembly (WAMY) and his political work with human rights. The entities are now challenged with allegations that relate mainly to the violation of human rights, with a strong bias Orientalist, according to Edward Said. Public initiatives and major political positions touch the issue of women\'s rights and the protection of life. In addition, human rights appear in the global humanitarian agenda guided by the entities and other Muslim political actors, such as the Palestinian issue. I chose to approach them from a perspective of active social life given the heterogeneity of the material at hand. Finally, the authorities have shown me a community political project with an aesthetic and a specific ethical, rather ensnared with typical imaging logic of a political nature of the spaces of contemporary public debate.

Abstract:

Veda, Santosh Sambamoorthy. "WAMS-based Intelligent Load Shedding Scheme for Preventing Cascading Blackouts." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/19251.

Full text
Abstract:
Severe disturbances in a large electrical interconnection cause a large mismatch in generation and load in the network, leading to frequency instability. If the mismatch is not rectified quickly, the system may disintegrate into multiple islands. Though the Automatic Generation Controls (AGC) perform well in correcting frequency deviation over a period of minutes, they are ineffective during a rolling blackout. While traditional Under Frequency Load Shedding Schemes (UFLS) perform quick control actions to arrest frequency decline in an islanded network, they are not designed to prevent unplanned islanding.

The proposed Intelligent Load Shedding algorithm combines the effectiveness of AGC Scheme by observing tie line flows and the speed of operation of the UFLS Scheme by shedding loads intelligently, to preserve system integrity in the event of an evolving cascading failure. The proposed scheme detects and estimates the size of an event by monitoring the tie lines of a control area using Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS) and initiates load shedding by removing loads whose locations are optimally determined by a sensitivity analysis. The amount and location of the load shedding depends on the location and size of the initiating event, making the proposed algorithm adaptive and selective. Case Studies have been presented to show that control actions of the proposed scheme can directly mitigate a cascading blackout.
