Abstract:
The relationship of brother and brother is one of the Five Great Relationships in Confucian culture, yet it has been relatively little studied. The lives of the brothers Wang Shizhen and Wang Shimao in the sixteenth century provide a case study of how two male siblings shared a family heritage of education and political engagement, and pursued parallel careers in public life, yet followed distinct paths in both their intellectual interest and political engagements. The nature of their personal relationship also serves to illustrate how the fraternal bond both structured their respective careers and provided emotional support in times of peril and loss.

In this paper, we prove sharp inequalities between the volume and the integral of the kth mean curvature for (k + 1)-convex domains in the Euclidean space for all k. We generalize the recent results of Chang and Wang [Some higher order isoperimetric inequalities via the method of optimal transport, preprint (2013); arXiv:1305.3004], where they prove the case k = 1, 2. The idea is the same as [S.-Y. A. Chang and Y. In this paper we consider hexagonal arrays on triangular grids and introduce hexagonal local picture languages and hexagonal tiling systems defining hexagonal recognizable picture languages, motivated by an analogous study of rectangular arrays by Giammarresi and Restivo. We also introduce hexagonal Wang tiles to define hexagonal Wang systems (HWS) as a formalism to describe hexagonal picture languages. It is noticed that the family of hexagonal picture languages defined by hexagonal Wang systems and the family recognized by hexagonal tiling systems coincide. Analogous to hv-domino systems describing rectangular arrays, we define xyz-domino systems and prove that recognizable hexagonal picture languages are characterized as projections of xyz-local picture languages.

Abstract:
Paracortina wangi sp. n. (Callipodida: Paracortinidae) is described from two caves in the karst plateau of Mengzi, Yunnan Province, China. It is the first troglomorphic species described in the family, the congeners being known exclusively from epigean habitats. The status of the family is briefly discussed in the light of the new finding. Though originally assigned to Schizopetalidae, Scotopetalum warreni Shear, 2000, a paracortinid-like millipede from caves in Vietnam, might also prove to belong to the Paracortinidae. Some aspects of the phylogenetic analysis of Wang (1996) are criticised.

Abstract:
Christofides (1998) studies the proportional hazards (PH) transform of Wang (1995) and shows that for some parametric families, the PH premium principle reduces to the standard deviation (SD) premium principle. Christofides conjectures that for a parametric family of distributions with constant skewness, the PH premium principle reduces to the SD principle. I will show that this conjecture is false in general but that it is true for location-scale families and for certain other families.Wang's premium principle has been established as a sound measure of risk in Wang (1995, 1996), Wang, Young, and Panjer (1997), and Wang and Young (1998). Determining when the SD premium principle is a special case of Wang's premium principle is important because it will help identify circumstances under which the more easily applied SD premium principle is a reliable measure of risk.First, recall that a distortion g is a non-decreasing function from [0, 1] onto itself. Wang's premium principle, with a fixed distortion g, associates the following certainty equivalent with a random variable X, (Wang, 1996) and (Denneberg, 1994):in which Sx is the decumulative distribution function (ddf) of X, Sx(t) = Pr(X > t), t ∈ R. If g is a power distortion, g(p) = pc, then Hg is the proportional hazards (PH) premium principle (Wang, 1995).Second, recall that a location-scale family of ddfs is , in which Sz is a fixed ddf. Alternatively, if Z has ddf Sz, then {X = μ + σZ: μ∈ R, σ > 0} forms a location-scale family of random variables, and the ddf of . Examples of location-scale families include the normal, Cauchy, logistic, and uniform families (Lehmann, 1991, pp. 20f). In the next proposition, I show that Wang's premium principle reduces to the SD premium principle on a location-scale family. Christofides (1998) observes this phenomenon in several special cases.

Childs, Carrie. ""I want this, I want that" : a discursive analysis of mental state terms in family interaction." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/9354.

Full text
Abstract:
Using the theoretical approach of discursive psychology, this thesis examines the interactive uses of mental state talk, in particular the term want , in everyday family interaction. In mainstream cognitive psychology mental state terms are examined as words which signify internal referents. How individuals come to competently participate in social interaction is formulated as a problem of how individual, isolated minds come to understand the contents of other minds. This thesis challenges these individualistic notions and examines notions of wanting as interactionally managed participants concerns. The data are taken from two sources; a set of video recordings taken from a series of fly-on-the-wall documentary programmes which each focus on a particular family and videotapes of mealtimes recorded by three families. Recordings were initially transcribed verbatim and sections related to the emerging themes within the thesis were subsequently transcribed using the Jefferson notation system. These transcripts were then analysed, alongside repeated viewings of the video recordings. The thesis considers a range of analytic themes, which are interlinked via one of the primary research questions, which has been to examine how, and to what end, speakers routinely deploy notions of wanting in everyday talk-in-interaction. A major theme has been to highlight inherent problems with work in social cognition which uses experimental tasks to examine children s Theory of Mind and understanding of desires . I argue that the assumptions of this work are a gross simplification of the meaning wanting for both children and adults. A further theme has been to examine the sequential organisation of directives and requests in both adults and children s talk. Finally, I examine speakers practices for rejecting a proposal regarding their actions and for denying a formulation of their motivations by a co-interactant. The conclusions of the thesis show that expressions of wanting are practical expressions which work within a flow of interactional and deontic considerations and that making claims regarding one s own or others wants is entirely a social matter. I argue that rather than being examined for what they may reveal about the mind , mental state terms may be fruitfully examined as interactional matters.

Thompson, Lauren Jade. "Becoming what women want : formations of masculinity in postfeminist film and television." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/57075/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses a range of recent television and film texts to interrogate postfeminist media formations of masculinity. In particular, this work focuses on increasingly prevalent media narratives that are about producing men as suitable romantic partners for postfeminist women. Arguing that existing literature on postfeminism ignores or trivialises the issue of masculinity, this thesis addresses new cultural formations of masculinity that are linked not only to postfeminist discourse, but also related cultural and economic shifts such as post-industrialisation and the rise of neo-liberal cultural politics. Analysing texts from the mid-1990s to 2012, the work argues that such representations are rife with tensions and contradictions. They represent in part an ungendering of previously feminine arenas (such as the makeover, and the home) yet are also marked by a discourse that requires the reassertion of sexual difference and the maintenance of heteronormativity. As such, the urge towards coupling becomes central to these formations, across the range of texts discussed within this thesis. The thesis argues that postfeminist media representations of masculinity are often characterised by an interplay between dominant, residual and emergent formations. In the makeover show, the mission is to improve a man to satisfy his existing partner (perhaps as preparation for a proposal) or to ready him for entry into the dating market. In the lifestyle show, the advice given on how to manage domestic labour is committed to encouraging harmony between the heterosexual couple. The homebuilding sitcom focuses on the challenges of the transition between youth and the establishment of a family unit: finding the right partner, settling down, building a home, having children. The Hollywood romantic comedy, even in its recent, male-centred incarnations, still presents successful coupling as integral, essential, and inevitable, even if its attitude to the union is sometimes ambivalent. In all of these television and film genres, there is a considerable focus on how men must change in order to become, and stay, "marriageable". This emphasis on coupling is paired with images of singledom as failure, a pathologisation which, this thesis argues, is rapidly becoming ungendered. The example texts' reinforcement of compulsory heterosexuality, their focus on a particular 'life-stage' (the early stages of independent living) and the increased focus on men's private lives means that domestic space and the home become key sites in which these tensions and battles are played out. This thesis examines the central role of the home, its decor, arrangement and labour, as both one of the major negotiations of coupling and as an aesthetic strategy for representing different formations of masculinity and postfeminist dilemmas of masculinity within this group of texts.

Abstract:
The United States, during both the Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan administrations, pursued humanitarian relief in the Horn of Africa and East Africa with an eye towards Cold War politics. During the Carter administration the focus was on Ethiopia and the regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam, while during the Reagan administration the United States’ efforts were mainly targeted towards Sudan and the regime of Gaffar Nimeiry. In both instances, the United States was concerned with the politics of the Cold War, trying to create a more positive image of the U.S. abroad by relieving world hunger, while also propping up governments that supported U.S. interests during the Cold War against the Soviet Union.

Donelly, Bowrin Eva. "'I want to be somebody' : identities of primary school leavers on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/50046/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research reported in this thesis is an investigation of identities of primary school leavers (10-13 years old) residing on the Caribbean territory, St. Kitts. Through two main phases and a pilot of an ethnography conducted intermittently between 2008 and 2011, I explored volunteer-participants' individual and collective identities. In particular, I explored their aspirations for the future and everyday living, the influences they perceive, and conceptualizations of and aspirations for the Caribbean. The aim was to gain insights into their understanding of Caribbean, thus, illuminating Caribbean-identity; two terms fuelling debates in the Social Science literature alleging a Caribbean-identity crisis. One of the main innovations of the design was my partnership with a group of primary school leavers who were trained to help as co-researchers to collaboratively generate and partially analyse data. The findings suggest participants have very positive perceptions of themselves as individuals; however, their identities seem more localized. They generally aspire to migrate, especially to America, to achieve success, and their conceptions of Caribbean vary greatly and seem uncertain while their overarching-aspiration for their island and region is for them to become "better" places socially, economically, politically, culturally, and environmentally. In part, this main finding conflicts with the idea of an identity-crisis on an individual-level, but supports ideas of a lack of a resolute sense of self on a regional-collective level for participants. Equally important, participants report many positive impacts resulting from their involvement. For some, the process contributed clarity about self and aspirations, and for others, it helped with not only a clearer-perspective, but also the development of life-skills.

Armstrong, Jill. "Following in their mothers' footsteps? : what the daughters of successful career women want from their work and family lives." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2015. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/58053/.

Full text
Abstract:
Twenty-five percent of working women now occupy the top levels of the labour market (ONS 2013c). This presents an opportunity to assess the extent to which adult daughters have been influenced in their aspirations for work and family life by growing up with a mother with a successful career –a significant research gap. Intergenerational narrative interviews with 30 mother and daughter pairs explored their observations about the effects on their ambitions, relationships, emotions and identities. The mothers were most often the prime influence on their daughters' embarking upon high status, satisfying careers. However, neither most mothers, nor their daughters aspired to ‘get to the top', which challenges both the idea of progress towards gender equality at the highest levels in organisations and traditional definitions of career success. The mothers managed work and motherhood thoughtfully and most did not experience disjuncture between their identities (Bailey 1999). Key original contributions are that almost all the daughters thought that having a mother who worked mainly full--‐time out of the home in a career she found satisfying benefited them or, at least, did them no damage. Despite this, most daughters did not think that emulating their mothers would be fine for the children the daughters anticipated having. The main explanations for this are the pervasive idea that working part--‐time would give them the ‘best of both worlds' as mothers and workers, the motherhood culture of ‘intensification of responsibility' (Thomson et al. 2011, p.277), and the perceived lack of examples of satisfying flexible career paths within organisational careers for women and men. Many of the mothers took a pragmatic approach to their ‘emotion management' (Hochschild 1983, p.44) of work--‐life trade--‐offs but did not transmit their experience of managing their feelings about working motherhood. I argue that doing so could benefit their working daughters.

Miles, Steven. "'You just wear what you want don't yer'? : an empirical examination of the relationship between youth consumption and the construction of identity." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 1996. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/4750/.

Full text
Abstract:
The social scientific debate over consumption is of increasing concern to commentators addressing the cultural implications of socio-economic change. All too often, however, the individual meanings that consumers have for the goods they consume have been neglected by these commentators, notably in favour of abstract discussions of the role of consumption in the emergence of a 'postmodern' culture. Arguing that consumption provides the sociologist with an invaluable means of addressing questions concerning the relationship between structure and agency, this thesis attempts to move beyond the limited conception of a fragmented self, picking and choosing his or her identity from the menu of life, to begin to establish an empirical grounding for the relationship between consumption and identity amongst young people. Data were collected from a triangulated three-stage research process, in the form of a series of focus group interviews, informed by Personal Construct Psychology, a participant observation study in a sports shop, and a Consumer Meanings Questionnaire. Arguing that young people's identities are largely constructed in peer group settings, the evidence presented suggests that consumption provides an everyday cultural framework, within which young consumers negotiate some semblance of everyday stability in a 'risk' society. In this sense, young people appear to pursue a dual task. First, they are intent upon forming group-based identities. Second, they attempt to construct a sense of individuality in this context. Hence, it is argued that whilst young people choose consumer goods according to peer group meanings, they tend to see their own choices as 'individual' and those of their peers as being determined by media and marketing-created desires. As such, whilst it would be misleading to see young people as dupes of the capitalist system, neither are they free agents. Teenagers construct their identities partially through the framework that consumption provides, but not with products of their own choosing. Far from being whimsical consumers in this context, I argue that essentially, young people are modernists, adapting to the rational constraints upon their everyday lives and changing the character of their consumption patterns accordingly. The situated realities of so-called postmodern forms of consumption can therefore only be understood, it is argued, through innovative triangulated research methods which address consumer meanings in routine everyday settings and which, in turn, consider the theoretical implications of such meanings, for both an understanding of the ideological impact of consumerism and it's relationship to debates concerning structure and agency.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines the long-standing debate about the effects of family planning programs on contraceptive behavior and fertility. We begin with a brief overview of the main rationale for family planning, namely the removal of obstacles to practicing contraception by women who want to space or limit their births. The central sections of the chapter then discuss the evidence on the effects of family planning programs. Three sources of evidence are examined: (1) controlled experiments; (2) natural experiments; and (3) statistical studies. These sources provide broadly comparable estimates of the effects of a high-quality family planning program: an increase of 25–35% in contraceptive prevalence and a decline of about 1.5 births per woman in the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) compared to a population without family planning support. The statistical analyses examine the roles of family planning programs in changing contraceptive demand and its satisfaction and the pattern of wanted and unwanted fertility. Demand refers to the proportion of women who do not want to get pregnant and its satisfaction refers to the proportion of women with a demand that practice contraception. As expected, family planning programs raise the satisfaction of demand for contraception and reduce unwanted fertility. Contrary to common conclusions made in economic theories of fertility, family planning programs have a substantial impact on demand for contraception and on wanted fertility. We conclude with a discussion of the criticisms of family planning programs and the claims that these programs have at best a small impact and are not cost-effective.

Abstract:
In general, information contains both of the physical attributes and the psychological attributes. For these two kind attributes of information, this paper discussed the incompleteness of the axioms system of the current information entropy theories. It is necessary to add the condition of boundedness to the axioms system when it is used to measure the uncertainty of psychological information. A new family of information entropy using a convex-concave function is introduced for satisfying the psychological attributes of information. And based on the psychological information entropy function, the divergence measures between two probability distributions of psychological information defined as Wang-Huang divergences are formulated. For the boundedness attributes of the psychological information entropy function and not requiring the condition of absolute continuity to be satisfied by the probability distributions involved, Wang-Huang divergences are totally different with the Kullback-Leiber divergences. The new measures are well characterized by the properties of non-negativity, finiteness. More importantly, their close relationship with the variation and the probability of misclassification error are established in terms of bounds illustrated in numerical examples. These bounds are crucial in many applications of divergence measures such as in the quality and reliability engineering applications.

Abstract:
The family as a living system is an organizedand permanent whole with changing patterns of human behavior, ie the family is the first life and social environment in which the child finds himself and acquires the first experiences that form the starting point of the overall development of the individual. In addition to the family, the time that the child spends in school is relatively long, and accordingly, she manages to achieve her influence on the development and formation of the student's personality. The cooperation established between the family and the school can contribute to both parties in different ways, improving the general atmosphere, the school climate and improving the work of teachers and providing support for the development of the family and parenting skills. By studying the relevant literature, we want to determine the importance of cooperation between the family and the school for the development of students' personalities, which is also the basic goal. The paper uses the historical method, as the basic method of historical research and analysis of the content of pedagogical documentation.

Abstract:
Nowadays, there are various bottles and packages of liquid laundry detergents in Japan. Many companies have tried to create not only more powerful detergency of the products but also the new value of design in the laundry detergent bottle and package. And our lifestyle is changing like an increasing nuclear family and single life and enjoying a shopping using the internet in recent. Since selecting a detergent might be linked depending on such lifestyle, we need to survey the relationship between the design of detergents such as a bottle shape or package and the user's lifestyle. Therefore, we focused on the shape of bottles and packages of liquid laundry detergents in this study. Therefore, this study aims to clarify the difference in impressions of the bottle's shapes and packages of laundry liquid detergent based on Kansei engineering. So, we have experimented with ten bottles and packages using the ranking evaluation method to clarify the relationship between participants' decision to want to use bottles and the following items; 1) Luxury feeling level, 2) Easiness level to grip, 3) Fit feeling level to the laundry space, 4) Easiness level to store the bottle up, 5) Fleeing level of detergency power, and 6)Preference level to want to use. As a result, the item of "Preference level to want to use" had a stronger relationship with the bottle's packages of liquid laundry detergents than the bottle's shapes concerned with the usability of liquid laundry detergents. Even though the handle helps grip the bottles, participants preferred these bottles that do not have any handles with a luxury feel. Moreover, for the "Preference level to want to use," the Kansei factors of the bottle's shape, such as "Luxury feeling level" and "Fit feeling level to the laundry space," are more critical than the Usability factors, such as "Easiness level to grip" and "Easiness level to store up." Also, in the bottle packages situation, the item "Preference level to want to use" had a more substantial relationship with the item of "Luxury feeling level" than "Fleeing level of detergency power." This "Preference level to want to use" and packages differ depending on the participants' lifestyle, such as 'living style' and 'number of washes clothes per week.' For example, the participants who live alone want to use the bottle with a luxury feeling and easy to store. In contrast, the participants who live with family want to use the bottle with a luxury feeling, which fits their laundry space. These participants who live with family showed a similar tendency as the number of washes increased. Moreover, there are different characteristics in evaluating liquid laundry detergent depending on each one's lifestyle. Also, these results mean we need to survey more the condition of laundry space in Japan to propose a new bottle package design as future work.

Abstract We are concerned with communication media, especially media for daily communication. Let’s consider the case when people want to chat. For example, when we travel alone in a foreign country or when we see an impressive painting alone, we may want to enjoy the feeling with our family. We have introduced “Tel-E-Merge” as new communication system for “I wish you were here” [1]. We coined the term Tel-E-Merge to have a double meaning, Tele-Merge and Tel-Emerge, which will make it possible to merge a remotely located person, the tele-visitor, into a tele-inviter’s space through VR systems.

Abstract:
Children and elderly represent segments for which education is extremely important. It is a known fact that they are major consumers of information, especially from television. New technologies like NetTV will facilitate the distribution of multimedia educational content. In the context of the European ITEA2 Guarantee project, we consider it as an opportunity to correlate the educational content with the information received from sensors. The purpose of the educational animation is to educate the behavior. The system will offer multimedia educational content on specific behaviors: behave properly, socialize, rest frequently, check health, verify the merchandises expiration dates, get medication on time, be organized, do not forget to turn off appliances, etc. The content is also a form of communication between the children or elder and family or friends. Through animations, the family could educate and adjust behavior, show love and respect, could encourage communicating using new media channels, or could remember family moments, etc. The educational content has an emotional target. We want to capture the attention and we want the animation to be effective. In order to educate the rest frequently behavior, the system will generate several animations each with a different emotional target. The system will deliver the animations to NetTV or other devices on a regular basis. If the feedback from the sensors is positive, the system will deliver educational animations with a moderate emotional target. If the feedback is negative, such as the elder is not resting enough, the animations will have a higher emotional target. The paper will present an overview of the platform for delivering multimedia educational content in home environment, its role inside Guarantee architecture and how it could be integrated in future Ambient Intelligence solutions.

Among the seven "Ss" in the Ukrainian language - Sweets, Sports, Sleep, Sex, Smile, Communication and Relationships - the last two components are perhaps the most important. Communication shapes the human essence. The modern features of human communication, associated with the era of digitalization, when gadgets replace natural human communication are especially interesting. According to a study by Columbia University led by Maya Rossignac-Milon, the common reality is seen as a "third partner" in any relationship. The pinnacle of a relationship is a good family. Healthy relationships in the family are characterized by communication and the desire to maintain a high level of respect and trust. Every personality is a builder of their Happiness and therefore has the right to choose what they want in their life! Communicate, build relationships and stay well! Key words: сommunication, relationships, sources of happiness, digitalization, common reality.

Modelling with 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) tools has reached a point that its complexity is difficult to be controlled without the use of programming tools. Both general purpose CAD systems and specialized CAD pieces of software allow their programming with textual or visual interface. The designer is offered with a variety of tools in order to automate the design process and handle its geometrical complexity. The present paper deals with the use of CAD based visual programming for product designers, who want to use unusual geometries based on 2D patterns and present their work to the final user using high-end rendering images. The proposed designs can be customized to a great extend and contribute towards their increased added value. At the same time, a family of products can be presented, when the design parameters used get alternative values.

Abstract:
This paper explain the inverse engineering process to obtain an accuracy three-dimensional model of a big window module located in upper left side of the Sagrada Familia temple. The aim is to define a process to generate forms that compose an object starting from data provided by a mathematical analysis of cloud point’s management. This data allows to classify and determinate the type of surfaces applying analytic parameters. So, we are looking for a methodology to define all the surfaces that compose an object. Work methodology contains three stages: In first stage we want to determine the entity type to define the surface geometry. Second stage wants to establish the process to generate the best structure for the digital shape that defines surfaces. In this stage, also, we analyze the results in comparison with the clouds points using mathematical tools. Finally, we transform the surface geometry defined mathematically, in a three dimensional shape model by means of a parametric infrastructure.

Disparities in unintended childbearing remain a public health concern (Healthy People 2030). Using the 2015-19 cycle of the National Survey of Family Growth, we examine sociodemographic variation in birth intendedness, looking at births occurring between 2014-2018 to women aged 15-49. Birth intendedness is based on a series of questions in which women are asked to characterize each birth as on time, mistimed (wanted but occurring earlier than desired), or unwanted (the respondent did not want any births at all, or any additional births). When births are reported as too early, women were then asked how much earlier than desired the birth occurred. We categorize mistimed births into two groups: slightly mistimed (less than two years earlier than desired) or seriously mistimed (two or more years too early). This profile is an update of FP-17-091 and the second in a series on unintended childbearing in the U.S.

Abstract:
Despite the sharp drop in transit ridership throughout the USA that began in March 2020, two different uses of land near transit stations continue to be implemented in the United States to promote ridership. Since 2010, transit agencies have given priority to multi-family residential construction referred to as transit oriented development (TOD), with an emphasis on housing affordability. In second place for urban planners but popular with suburban commuters is free or inexpensive parking near rail or bus transit centers, known as park-and-ride (PnR). Sometimes, TOD and PnR are combined in the same development. Public policy seeks to gain high community value from both of these land uses, and there is public interest in understanding the circumstances and locations where one of these two uses should be emphasized over the other. Multiple justifications for each are offered in the professional literature and reviewed in this report. Fundamental to the strategic decision making necessary to allocate public resources toward one use or the other is a determination of the degree to which each approach generates transit ridership. In the research reported here, econometric analysis of GIS data for transit stops, PnR locations, and residential density was employed to measure their influence on transit boardings for samples of transit stops at the main transit agencies in Seattle, Los Angeles, and San José. Results from all three cities indicate that adding 100 parking spaces close to a transit stop has a larger marginal impact than adding 100 housing units. Previous academic research estimating the higher ridership generation per floor area of PnR compared to multi-family TOD housing makes this show of strength for parking an expected finding. At the same time, this report reviews several common public policy justifications for TOD as a preferred land development emphasis near transit stations, such as revenue generation for the transit agency and providing a location for below-market affordable housing where occupants do not need to have a car. If increasing ridership is important for a transit agency, then parking for customers who want to drive to a station is an important option. There may also be additional benefits for park-and-ride in responding to the ongoing pandemic.

Honduras: Postpartum and postabortion patients want family planning. Population Council, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2001.1014.

Full text
Abstract:
Approximately half of deliveries in Honduras take place in hospitals, however hospitals rarely offer family planning (FP) services to postpartum or postabortion patients. In 1999, the Honduran Ministry of Health and the Population Council began a two-year project to expand access to FP counseling and methods following childbirth or treatment for incomplete abortion. The intervention built upon a previous Population Council project that showed that 30 percent of women hospitalized for a delivery or an abortion-related complication were interested in adopting an FP method prior to discharge. In all five hospitals participating in the study, delivery was the principal reason for admission. Admission for abortion complications was also relatively common. The intervention consisted of training all staff members assisting postpartum and postabortion women in FP service promotion and counseling; training 65 physicians and nurses in contraceptive methodology; providing FP methods, equipment, and educational aids; and supervising activities. As detailed in this brief, when providers were trained to provide FP counseling and methods to postpartum and postabortion women, the proportion of women receiving this information doubled and the proportion who received a method tripled.

Family Planning Programs for the 21st Century: Rationale and Design. Population Council, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh11.1016.

Abstract:
Family planning improves health, reduces poverty, and empowers women. Yet, today, more than 200 million women in the developing world want to avoid pregnancy but are not using a modern method of contraception. They face many obstacles, including lack of access to information and health-care services, opposition from their husbands and communities, misperceptions about side effects, and cost. Family planning programs are among the most successful development interventions of the past 50 years. They are unique in their range of potential benefits, encompassing economic development, maternal and child health, educational advances, and women’s empowerment. Research shows that with high-quality voluntary family planning programs, governments are able to reduce fertility and produce large-scale improvements in health, wealth, human rights, and education. This book is a comprehensive resource for policymakers and donors. It makes the case for increased funding and support of voluntary family planning, and details how to design programs to operate both ethically and effectively.
