Wei, Xiaoli. "L'histoire de la modernité en Chine : l'architecture au contact avec le monde occidental, discours et pratiques (1840-2008)." Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040213.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis goes through the changes that occur in the architecture’s knowledge in modern China, observing the relation between architectural creation and the historical background. Taking into account the diachronic differences between the two cultures, this study analyzes the interpenetration of that knowledge between western countries and China as well as its influence upon Chinese architectural and artistic creation. Modern architecture started spreading over China from late XIXth century, together with the industrial development. In early XXth century, a new approach to modern historiography appears referring to the west. Some complex issues referring to ideology and regarding historiographical methods started to emerge through the first modern studies on Chinese traditional architecture. This thesis, based on such an historical background, analyzes the architectural projects and concepts in order to enlighten the researches, quite personal, made by the Chinese architects and historians and to emphasize their own interpretations of the key concepts on this field. The statements and practices that pave the way of architecture from the 1950s to the 1990s bring up the question of the evolution occurring in the architectural history. Chinese architecture draws its inspiration from abroad mixing it with the tradition established during the Chinese « red years ». After the opening policy and economical reforms were settled, architecture faces a great urban development. Around the end of the 1990s, some Chineseavant-garde architects started a new way aiming at re-interprating the tradition within the discipline itself

Wang, Lin. "Wang Shuo and the commercialisation of contemporary Chinese culture." Thesis, Durham University, 2006. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2602/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the commercialisation of Chinese culture that has taken place over the past twenty years in mainland China. It explores the contribution of Wang Shuo, a cultural figure who straddles different fields of culture, moving from literature to the ultimate mass culture medium of television, this study plots Wang Shuo' s development from educational failure, to business failure, to fiction writer, film & TV editor, film director and cultural critic and analyst. His stories, films, TV series and articles have caused shock-waves throughout national cultural circles as he has transformed the terms of the debate from academic discourse to a validation of the role of the market in the culture field. Although Wang Shuo has not been labelled as a dissident, his approach to the culture market has had a more subversive effect on official ideology that those overt dissidents who have had to live in exile or have been imprisoned. He has utilised the language of official ideology to satirise the authorities, turning the ideology and its supporters into figures of fun. Yet his own goals have been strictly personal and economic ones. The authorities recognize the value of Wang Shuo's work in the cultural market but at the same time distrust his works and place him under strict censorship. Examining the way Wang Shuo and people surround him have succeeded in different fields of cultural achievement is a mirror to understanding the process of the transformation of contemporary Chinese culture from a socialist state-controlled culture to a market-oriented mass culture industry.

Abstract:
102
Wang Shu-he (王叔和) collected and organized the medical classics and doctor’s discourse of pulse diagnosis before the Wei and Jin Dynasties, therefore compiled the first monograph of pulse diagnosis in the traditional Chinese medical history. For a novice at pulse diagnosis, the key to advancing his pulse diagnostic technique is to identify the many touches of pulse accurately. This study attempt to research the descriptions of touches in Mai Jing (脈經) from the angle of “bodily sense”, investigating how to diagnose physical state through decoding pulse messages, grasping the “tacit knowledge” (Michael Polanyi, 1966) in the pulse diagnosis technique. The second chapter expounded that since traditional Chinese Physicians aimed to “ cure by prevention ”, pulse diagnosis was not only a technique used to cure the already ill into the healthy, but also have the capability of bettering common people’s physical and mental state therefore enabling them to continue the path of self improvement and enlightenment. The third chapter aimed to research the corresponding relationship between pulse positions and the viscera, and how to use fingers to feel the pulse. In the fourth chapter, we will investigate the method in controlling the force to enable touching the pulse deeply or lightly, and will explain the physiological and pathological meaning of the pulse depth. In the fifth chapter, we will find how traditional Chinese physicians diagnose patient’s chills and fever in addition to the deficiency and excess from the pulse rate.

Abstract:
102
James Legge, a nineteenth-century well-known English missionary and sinologist, spent half-century time on the Chinese classics translation project. His contribution has been highly recommended. When talking of Legge’s translation works, a Chinese scholar Wang Tao must be mentioned. In 1862, Wang Tao was to be promulgated an order for the arrest by Qing government due to his involvement in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. By aid of Sir Walter Henry Medhurst, he was exiled to Hong Kong, one of the British colonies at that time, and served as Legge’s assistant until Legge went back to Britain in 1873. During the period of time, he compiled and wrote Maoshi jishi, Chunqiu Zuoshizhuan jishi, and Liji jishi for Legge’s reference to translate these canons. These are valuable and primary sources for studying on Wang’s impact on Legge’s translation. However the works did not be researched thoroughly since they are manuscripts and stored in the New York Public Library. Thanks to the Library’s text digitalization and database construction, now we are easy to review and download them from the website. Based on the studies of contemporary scholars Lee Chi-fang, Yang Ching-lung, and Lauren F. Pfister, my study focuses on Wang Tao’s Maoshi jishi with reference of Chen Huan’s Shi Maoshizhuan shu and Legge’s The She King to clarify two questions: Firstly, how many the content of Maoshi jishi is quoted from Shi Maoshizhuan shu? Secondly, did Legge quote the content of Shi Maoshizhuan shu through Maoshi jishi into his footnotes of The She King? By comparison of texts, my study finds that in whole items of Maoshi jishi, only 8 items are not quoted from Shi Maoshizhuan shu, 432 are partially quoted, and 2066 are completely quoted. Apparently, Wang Tao’s Maoshi jishi is based on Shi Moshizhuan shu and combined with other sources and his personal comments. It means Maoshi jishi is Wang’s preparation as a reference for Legge’s translating work, not his own creation. For this reason, in spite of Legge’s encouragement, he declined to publish it and did not list it in his bibliography. I also find in Legge’s translation, 27 footnotes quoting from Wang Tao’s Maoshi jishi actually are the opinions of Chen Huan. Comparing the quotations of Shi Maoshizhuan shu in Maoshi jishi with Legge’s translation and other texts, the fact that another 25 items quoted indirectly from Shi Maoshizhuan shu is confirmed. Therefore the content of Shi Maoshizhuan shu can be found in Legge’s translation, and they may help Legge to explain the particles, interpret some terms with other phonetic loan characters, indicate different character forms in the text, and understand Mao’s explanations of the Shi.

Abstract:
87
This thesis makes an investigation into the order of the 64 hexagrams of the Mawangdui Boshu Yijing based on the "Shu wang/zhi lai" passage found in both the Mawandui Boshu "Yizhiyi" pian and in the received version of the "Shuoguazhuan". The investigation is based on a detailed comparison of the usage of the individual words of this passage in other locations of the Yizhuan, together with a comparison of the viewpoints expressed in the Mawangdui Boshu Yi Commentaries. It is concluded that the special arrangement of the 64 hexagrams in the Mawangdui Boshu is in order to comply with the Bagua or the interelationshionship of "tiandiwanwu", and not as an aid to divination, as presupposed by most previous scholars.
