Changes in cock Pheasant calling frequency during the breeding season were measured for two Wanganui Pheasant populations between 1986 and 1988 by recording counts at 2-week intervals during the period September to December. Calling intensity varied considerably between successive 2-week intervals. It reached a peak during mid-November but was much less by late December. To estimate variability between successive counts, call counts were recorded in six areas along the Wanganui-Manawatu coast between 6 and 11 November 1988. Within site variance averaged 25% of total variance between and within

A decision was taken in 2009 by the Minister of Land Information that the official spelling of the city formerly spelled Wanganui should henceforth be Whanganui, although a period of grace was given for the change-over. Nonetheless, there is still a good deal of opposition to the change from residents, particularly expressed on many occasions by the outspoken mayor at the time, Michael Laws. This article was originally delivered as a seminar during Māori Language Week 2009, before the decision was taken. It seeks to explore the complex issues that underlie such a decision, and thus to shed lig

As a response to the work I have done in the field of critical incidents in relation to young people, this paper begins with a brief discussion of resilience and the involvement of young people in decision making, particularly in this field of practice. This is followed by an overview of the ongoing development of a Critical Incident Student Team within Wanganui Collegiate. Young people’s views and opinions are integral to its functioning and as such their opinions are regularly, and often informally, gathered, analysed and acted upon. Abstract:
The Wanganui-Wilberg landslide lies between Hokitika and Franz Josef townships, at the entrance of Harihari, on the true left bank of the Wanganui River, by State Highway 6. This apparently co-seismic landslide belongs to the class of events called rock avalanches - powerful destructive agents (Keefer, 1984) in the landscape. Other rock avalanches are numerous (Whitehouse, 1983), and widespread over the Southern Alps of New Zealand, and many appear to be co-seismic. De Mets et al. (1994) used the model NUVEL-1A to characterize the motion of the Alpine fault: 37 mm/year at an azimuth of 071° fo

New Zealand wood availability forecasts indicate that increases in the future wood availability significantly relies on small-scale forest owners' resources. This "small-scale" resource is poorly understood and comprises a large number of owners. It is questionable how many of these forests are established with consideration of the cost and practicality of harvesting. An improved understanding of the likelihood of this resource ever being harvested is important for understanding future wood supply. The main objective of this study is to answer a fundamental question on how much small scale for

Wangari Maathai--founder of Kenya's Green Belt Movement (GBM), Member of Parliament, and activist for democracy, sustainable development, and human rights--has cultivated a multidimensional literacy that has allowed her to truly understand and address the problems that post-colonial Kenyans face. Her strong solution-oriented approach has allowed her to develop and refine operation of the GBM, which began simply planting trees, to produce a worldwide organizatio

This thesis explores interorganizational cooperation as a tool for grassroots expansion. It focuses on the importance of grounding development work in grassroots perspectives, while acknowledging the structural and practical limitations to this that exist inherently in the organization of the international system and in the nature of development actors. In order to address these limitations, it analyzes the resources, methods, and missions of development actors. The effects of the colonial project in Kenya created multi-faceted damages to the land and indigenous people-groups. Using the lens of ecofeminism, this study examines the undergirding structures that produce systems such as colonization that oppress and destroy land, people, and other beings. By highlighting the experience of the Kikuyu people within the Kenyan colonial program, the innovative and ingenious response of Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement proves to be a relevant and effective counter to women's disempowerment and environmental devastation in a post-colonial nation.
