Abstract:
Despite its pivotal economic position in Central Africa, the history of Zimbabwe's Wankie Colliery has scarcely been explored. Although the historical pattern of capital accumulation and class struggle on the colliery has yet to be traced in any detail, this article suggests that a useful starting point is the protracted labour crisis which convulsed the colliery in 1918. Attempts to expand output through intensified pressure on a dwindling supply of black labour soon established a vicious circle in which workers' health deteriorated rapidly. Hundreds of black miners were incapacitated by ‘tropical ulcers’. An ensuing commission of enquiry exonerated the colliery's management of any blame, but it is nonetheless significant for the light it casts on the British South Africa Company Administration's narrow conception of its role after the Privy Council decision depriving it of ownership of ‘unalienated’ land in the Colony. The article's last section examines the conflict between the colliery's management and organized white workers in the context of the racial division of labour. In doing so, it emphasizes the structural vulnerability of white labour in the colonial era.

Abstract:
SummaryIn 1953 Southern Rhodesia's (Zimbabwe's) only coal mine, Wankie Colliery, was taken over by the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa. The colliery's new owners soon discovered that the elimination of “hand lashing” (shovelling of coal) was the key to better productivity and expanded output. Coal cutting machinery was installed wherever possible, but in the colliery's two oldest shafts existing mining methods were too deeply entrenched and consequently too expensive simply to be swept away. Instead Anglo American attempted to reinforce colonial production relations. Supervision underground was tightened up, and the degree of “self-regulation” enjoyed by lashers in determining the amount of work they did was limited. The introduction of a new mine tub designed to increase productivity precipitated strike action in February 1954 by the colliery's entire black labour force.

Abstract:
AbstractIn March 1964 the entire African labour force at Wankie Colliery, “Wangi Kolia”, in Southern Rhodesia went on strike. Situated about eighty miles south-east of the Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, central Africa’s only large coalmine played a pivotal role in the region’s political economy. Described byDrum, the famous South African magazine, as a “bitter underpaid place”, the colliery’s black labour force was largely drawn from outside colonial Zimbabwe. While some workers came from Angola, Tanganyika (Tanzania), and Nyasaland (Malawi), the great majority were from Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). Less than one-quarter came from Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) itself. Although poor-quality food rations in lieu of wages played an important role in precipitating female-led industrial action, it also occurred against a backdrop of intense struggle against exploitation over an extended period of time. As significant was the fact that it happened within a context of regional instability and sweeping political changes, with the independence of Zambia already impending. This late colonial conjuncture sheds light on the region’s entangled dynamics of gender, race, and class.

Abstract:
In 1685, the Swedish nobleman Per Sparre instituted legal proceedings against the printer Niclas Wankyf. The dispute had been triggered by Sparre having let his tenants erect houses for themselves on what Wankyf regarded as his private property. Wankyf had consequently torn down the buildings, causing Sparre to bring the case to court. However, Wankyf clearly saw himself as the aggrieved party and regarded Sparre as a trespasser. Arguing his case before the court, Wankyf emphasized that Sparre had never been able to prove that he held the contested area by virtue of urminnes hävd (“immemorial prescription”). To this Sparre retorted—with some irritation—that Wankyf argued as if “there are no other means of defending one's legal property than to invoke immemorial prescription.”

Abstract:
The taxonomic placement of Polyalthia florulenta C.Y.Wu ex P.T.Li has not been clarified. Phylogenetic analyses of eight chloroplast regions (matK, ndhF, ndhF-rpl32, psbA-trnH, rbcL, rpl32-trnL, trnL-F and ycf1; ca. 9.2 kb, 66 taxa) unambiguously placed Polyalthia florulenta in a subclade of tribe Miliuseae, sister to Wangia saccopetaloides. Polyalthia flourulenta shares several diagnostic characters with Wangia saccopetaloides, including leaf-opposed inflorescences, sepaloid outer petals and saccate inner petals with basal glandular tissue. It differs from Wangia saccopetaloides in having membranous leaf laminas, single-flowered inflorescences, subglobose single-seeded monocarps, and spiniform endosperm rumination. On the basis of the combined molecular phylogenetic and morphological data, we propose a new combination, Wangia florulenta (C.Y.Wu ex P.T.Li) B.Xue. As the protologue description was based on material lacking mature flowers, we provide a detailed description of flower morphology. A key to species in the genus Wangia is also provided.

Abstract:
My experience concerning cases similar to the Wanglie case indicates that there was virtually no possibility of a solution for the conflict between the different expectations of the Wanglie family and those of the physicians caring for Helga Wanglie. A persistent vegetative state precludes a return to consciousness unless an extraordinary phenomenon takes place. Therefore, the physicians expected to be relieved of the duty of continuing to give Mrs. Wanglie respiratory care. However, her family thought it their duty to provide their loved one with the best possible treatment. The family based their position on the claim that life is God's gift and that only He has the right to terminate it. Such spiritual convictions are perceived as reflective of a higher “truth” and are not predisposed to negotiation or change according to the situation.

Full text
Abstract:
The Wankel engine is a rotary type of four-stroke cycle internal combustion engine. The higher specific power output is one of its strong advantages. In Wankel rotary engine, every eccentric shaft revolution corresponds to one four-stroke cycle, whereas conventional reciprocating engine fulfills four-stroke cycle in two crankshaft revolutions. This means the power stroke frequency is twice that of conventional engines. Theoretically, application of two-stroke cycle on Wankel geometry will duplicate the power stroke frequency. In this research, a single-zone thermodynamic model is developed for studying the performance characteristic of a two-stroke Wankel engine. Two different port timings were adapted from the literature. The results revealed that late opening and early closing port geometry (small opening area) with high supercharging pressure has higher performance at low speed range. However, as the rotor speed increases, the open period of the port area becomes insufficient for the gas exchange, which reduces power performance. Early opening and late closing port geometry (large opening area) with supercharging is more suitable in higher speed range. Port timing and area, charging pressure, and speed are the main factors that characterize output performance. These preliminary results show a potential for increasing power density by applying two-stroke cycle of the Wankel engine.

Abstract:
Given current environment protection problems, improvement of energy utilization efficiency is a major focus of compressor research. The presence of high-pressure gas in the clearance volume has an important effect on the efficiency of a Wankel compressor. Overflow pertains to the method that fully utilizes the high-pressure gas in the clearance volume. This method is used in this study, and its effect on the performance of a Wankel compressor is analysed by theoretical and simulation analyses. Compressor performance remains at a high level when the ratio of overflow recess volume to the clearance volume is approximately 2 per cent according to this study. Cooling capacity is improved by about 28 per cent compared with the Wankel compressor without overflow, and the relative deviation between the theoretical and the simulation results is kept within reasonable bounds.

Abstract:
Wanliu and Xiaowangzhuang transects which operated in 1994 and 2001 respectively along Zhengzhou-Shangqiu section on Lianyungang-Horgas highway were chosen to investigate heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, and Cr) pollution and potential ecological risks of roadside soils. Concentrations of soil heavy metals on Wanliu transect were higher than that on Xiaowangzhuang transect. The content of soil heavy metals increases with the distance away from highway, reaching a maximum value, and then decreases gradually. Potential ecological risks of the soil metals are at moderate level on Wanliu transect, while slight level on the other transect. Concentrations of most soil heavy metals and their potential ecological risks present skewness distribution with the distance form highway roadbed. The highest risk indexes (RI) for different metals on Wanliu transect are among 50 ~100 m from highway roadbed, farther than that on Xiaowangzhuang transect at 35 m. Most of the soil samples on northern side of the highway show higher metal concentrations and potential ecological risks than that on southern side. The total risk index was contributed by the heavy metal of Cd (averagely 61.39%), which is the main factor of potential ecological risks. The grade standards for different ecological risk levels must be modified according to types and amount of pollutants studied and their toxic-response factors.

Abstract:
Ti doped DLC coating was deposited on ductile iron disk commonly used material in small Wankel rotary engine. The friction coefficient under the working condition of apex seal was investigated. The results show that the Ti doped DLC coating is of low friction coefficient. In addition, the surface hardness and the morphology were improved by Ti doped DLC coating. After that, the Ti doped DLC coating was deposited on the housing. A performance testing platform for small Wankel rotary engine was built. The effect of Ti doped DLC coating under motored and working conditions were measured. The results show that when the operation speed varies from 7 000 to 17 000 r/min, the friction loss between apex seal and Ti doped DLC coating ranges 15~38 W under motored condition. It is only 68% of the friction loss between apex seal and ductile iron. Under working condition, the coating increases 23~78 W of the engine output power, which can improve the output power of small Wankel rotary engine by 24%~43%.

This began a medical downhill course that a year later caused her health care providers to conclude that she would not benefit from continued medical treatment. It would be futile, and therefore, should not be provided. Her husband (the surrogate decision maker) disagreed, and the conflict eventually led to a lawsuit. The Wanglie case touched off an extended debate in the medical and bioethical literature about medical futility: what it means and how useful the concept is in making ethical decisions about starting or stopping treatment.

Abstract:
There is little to indicate from, her circumstances that events would propel Helga Wanglie, an 86-year-old Minneapolis woman, into the center of public controversy. We know little of her life prior to the events that removed her from the world of conscious, sentient beings. By the time of her death on 4 July 1991, Mrs. Wanglie had become the focus of a nationwide public and professional debate on the rights of a patient in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) to receive aggressive medical treatment when such treatment is felt by the patient's doctors not to be in the patient's best interests.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Nowadays, micro engine miniaturization is one of the most challenging issues, especially for the design and fabrication of the high-power-density micro Wankel engine. With the decrease of the size of the micro engine, the problem of the heat deformation of the cylinder becomes more serious. In this paper, a micro Wankel engine with microtextures on the outer surface of the cylinder is designed and manufactured to diffuse the heat dissipation and regulate the temperature gradient, so as to increase the power output density. First, a series of finite element simulations are conducted to design a type of ideal surface microtexture. Then, the machining condition is optimized to fabricate microtextures by micro cutting on the cylinder surface by studying the processing parameters. Finally, the performance of the new micro Wankel engine in terms of the temperature gradient regulation and the mechanical power output is tested and compared with that of the un-textured micro engine. The comparison results show that temperature of the textured micro engine was dropped from 185 °C to 125 °C and the mechanical power output increased by 10.74% from that of its un-textured counterpart, verifying the proposed methods for temperature gradient regulation.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a Wavelet based Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (WANFIS) applied to forecast the wind power and enhance the accuracy of one step ahead with a 10 minutes resolution of real time data collected from a wind farm in North India. The proposed method consists two cases. In the first case all the inputs of wind series and output of wind power decomposition coefficients are carried out to predict the wind power. In the second case all the inputs of wind series decomposition coefficients are carried out to get wind power prediction. The performance of proposed WANFIS is compared to Wavelet Neural Network (WNN) and the results of the proposed model are shown superior to compared methods.

Abstract:
The paper presents the results of simulations of a gaseous fuel supply system in a Wankel engine. The testing was conducted on a zero-dimensional model of the designed injection system that was fuelled by gaseous hydrogen into the intake manifold in the RX 50 Wankel engine. The Dymola software and its Pneumatics Module were used in the simulation. The experiments determined what phenomena would occur inside the injection system and helped develop a tool to optimize its design. The analysis dealt with the changes in the pressure and mass flow rate in the individual components of such a supply system. The research was done in steady states for one value of speed and load as the inlet system pressure.
